  • Fasting Versus Postload Plasma Glucose Concentration and the Risk for Future Type 2 Diabetes Results from the Botnia Study
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Diabetes Care. - : American Diabetes Association. - 1935-5548 .- 0149-5992. ; 32:2, s. 281-286
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE - The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of the postload plasma glucose concentration in predicting future risk of type 2 diabetes, compared with prediction models based oil measurement. of the fasting plasma glucose (FPG) concentration. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS - A total of 2,442 subjects from the Botnia Study, who were free Of type 2 diabetes at baseline, received an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) at baseline and after 7-8 years of follow-up. Future risk for type 2 diabetes was assessed with area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve for prediction models based up measurement of the FPG concentration 1) with or without a 1-h plasma glucose concentration during the OGTT and 2) with or without the metabolic syndrome. RESULTS - Prediction models based on measurement of the FPG concentration were weak predictors for the risk of Future type 2 diabetes. Addition of a 1-h plasma glucose Concentration markedly enhanced prediction Of the risk of future type 2 diabetes. A cut point of 155 mg/dl for the 1-h plasma glucose concentration during the OGTT and presence Of the metabolic syndrome were used to Stratify subjects in each glucose tolerance group into low, intermediate, and high risk for future type 2 diabetes. CONCLUSIONS - The plasma glucose concentration at 1 h during the OGTT is a Strong predictor of future risk for type 2 diabetes and adds to the prediction power of models based on measurements made during the fasting state. A plasma glucose cut point of 155 mg/dl Plus the Adult Treatment Panel III criteria for the metabolic syndrome can be used to stratify nondiabetic subjects into low-, intermediate-, and high-risk groups.

  • Physical and radiopaque characterisation of acrylic bone cements containing an organobismuth compound as a radiopacifier
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Transactions - 7th World Biomaterials Congress. - 1877040193 ; , s. 1459-1459
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The water sorption and desorption characteristics of triphenyl bismuth (TPB)-cements were studied. The radiopacity of TPB was evaluated in order to assess its contrast in comparison to BaSO4-containing cements. It was observed that TPB-cements absorb/ desorp less water than BaSO4 cements (BS) due to the hydrophobic nature of TPB. It was shown that the addition of TPB to acrylic cements results in the formation of homogeneous system as a result of its solubility in MMA.

  • Static mechanical properties of acrylic bone cements containing an organobismuth compound as a radiopacifier
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Transactions - 7th World Biomaterials Congress. - 1877040193 ; , s. 1461-1461
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The inclusion of triphenyl bismuth (TPB) as an alternative radiopacifier in bone cements with good tensile properties was reported. Using Servohydraulic Testing Machine in accordance with ISO 5833 standard using cylindrical specimens where the ratio of the length to the diameter is 2:1, the compression testing was performed. It was observed that the addition of TPB does not degrade the flexural or compressive strengths of acrylic cements. It was shown that the ultimate compressive strengths of TPB-cements exceeded the minimum value of 70 MPa stated by ISO 5833 fro acrylic cements.

  • The influence of initial pressurization and cup introduction time on the depth of cement penetration in an acetabular model.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Acta Orthopaedica. - : Medical Journals Sweden AB. - 1745-3682 .- 1745-3674. ; 78:3, s. 333-339
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Acetabular cementation during total hip arthroplasty is considered difficult mainly due to the appearance and anatomy of the acetabulum. Improved cementation technique has been shown to improve the longevity of acetabular components. Method We designed a ceramic model to investigate the effect of varying the initial cement pressurization and cup introduction times on the depth of cement penetration. 4 groups were prepared, 2 of which involved varying initial cement pressurization and cup introduction times. Group 3 involved initial cement pressurization with no cup introduction, while group 4 involved cup introduction with no prior cement pressurization. Results and interpretation Most cement penetration occurred in the early pressurization phase, and we conclude that a relatively early and longer cement pressurization time and late cup introduction are positive factors for increased cement penetration in the acetabulum model.

  • Building Technological Capabilities of Local Auto Parts Firms under Contrasting Industrial Policies: A Comparative Study of Malaysia and Thailand 1960-2000.
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study deals with technological capability building of local auto parts firms in Malaysia and Thailand during the period 1960-2000. Malaysia introduced a national car programme in 1985 while Thailand has maintained its liberal economic policy and relies on foreign multinational automakers to operate in the country. The study focuses on an empirical survey of 41 and 42 local auto parts firms in Malaysia and Thailand respectively. As a result of different industrial policies, the findings of this study also indicate that large independent auto parts firms in Thailand have built very strong minor change capabilities whereas the Malaysian large auto parts firms have relied totally on the OEM production system.
