  • Machine Learning Research that Matters for Music Creation : A Case Study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of New Music Research. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0929-8215 .- 1744-5027. ; 48:1, s. 36-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research applying machine learning to music modeling and generation typically proposes model architectures, training methods and datasets, and gauges system performance using quantitative measures like sequence likelihoods and/or qualitative listening tests. Rarely does such work explicitly question and analyse its usefulness for and impact on real-world practitioners, and then build on those outcomes to inform the development and application of machine learning. This article attempts to do these things for machine learning applied to music creation. Together with practitioners, we develop and use several applications of machine learning for music creation, and present a public concert of the results. We reflect on the entire experience to arrive at several ways of advancing these and similar applications of machine learning to music creation.

  • What do these 5,599,881 parameters mean? : An analysis of a specific LSTM music transcription model, starting with the 70,281 parameters of its softmax layer
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 6th International Workshop on Musical Metacreation (MUME 2018). - 9781772870473
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A folk-rnn model is a long short-term memory network (LSTM) that generates music transcriptions. We have evaluated these models in a variety of ways – from statistical analyses of generated transcriptions, to their use in music practice – but have yet to understand how their behaviours precipitate from their parameters. This knowledge is essential for improving such models, calibrating them, and broadening their applicability. In this paper, we analyse the parameters of the softmax output layer of a specific model realisation. We discover some key aspects of the model’s local and global behaviours, for instance, that its ability to construct a melody is highly reliant on a few symbols. We also derive a way to adjust the output of the last hidden layer of the model to attenuate its probability of producing specific outputs.

  • Democratic Ruptures and Electoral Outcomes in Africa: Ghana's 2016 Election
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Africa Spectrum. - : SAGE Publications. - 0002-0397 .- 1868-6869. ; 53:1, s. 5-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Repetitive elections are important benchmarks for assessing the maturity of Africa's electoral democracies. Yet the processes through which elections entrench a democratic culture remain understudied. We introduce an important mechanism called a democratic rupture: an infraction in the democratisation process during competitive elections that has the potential to cause a constitutional crisis. It provides a new avenue of citizen participation outside of voting, and political space for opposition party realignment and to strengthen its support. Drawing from the case of Ghana, we show how the 2012 presidential election petition challenge served as a democratic rupture by contributing to the opposition's victory in 2016, enabling its political development. First, it exposed flaws in the electoral system and led to demands for electoral reforms. Second, it led to citizens being better educated on the electoral process. Third, it taught political parties that vigilance at the polling stations can help win elections. The article provides a critical analysis of the factors that shape democratic development, especially in cases where opposition parties defeat incumbent politicians.

  • Outcome of pregnancies and deliveries before and after ischaemic stroke
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: European Stroke Journal. - : SAGE Publications. - 2396-9873 .- 2396-9881. ; 2:4, s. 346-355
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Limited data exist on the outcome of pregnancies and deliveries in women with ischaemic stroke. We investigated the incidence of pregnancy- and delivery-related complications in women with ischaemic stroke before and after pregnancy compared with stroke-free matched controls. Patients and methods: Of our 1008 consecutive patients aged 15–49 years with first-ever ischaemic stroke, 1994– 2007, we included women with pregnancy data before or after stroke recorded in the Medical Birth Register (MBR) (n¼152), and for them searched stroke-free controls matched by age, parity, year of birth, residential area and multiplicity (n¼608). Data on hospital admissions and deaths (1987–2014) came from national health registries. Poisson regression mixed models allowed comparison of the incidence of complications. Results: A total of 124 stroke mothers had 207 singleton pregnancies before and 45 mothers 68 pregnancies after stroke. The incidence rate ratio (IRR) for the composite outcome of pregnancy and delivery complications adjusted for socioeconomic status and maternal smoking was 1.43 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.00–2.03, p¼0.05) for pre-stroke mothers, and 1.09 (95% CI 0.66–1.78) for post-stroke mothers, compared with matched controls. Similarly, the adjusted IRR for post-stroke hospital admission during pregnancy was 1.85 (95% CI 1.03–3.31). The IRR for perinatal death of the child was 3.43 (95% CI 0.57–20.53) before and 8.88 (95% CI 0.81–97.95) after stroke. Discussion and conclusions: Compared with stroke-free mothers, we found a higher incidence of pregnancy- and delivery-related complications in mothers with ischaemic stroke. Larger studies are needed to verify our results.

  • Collapsed cone dose calculations for heterogeneous tissues in brachytherapy using primary and scatter separation source data
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine. - : ELSEVIER IRELAND LTD. - 0169-2607 .- 1872-7565. ; 139, s. 17-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and Objective: Brachytherapy is a form of radiation therapy using sealed radiation sources inserted within or in the vicinity of the tumor of, e.g., gynecological, prostate or head and neck cancers. Accurate dose calculation is a crucial part of the treatment planning. Several reviews have called for clinical software with model-based algorithms that better take into account the effects of patient individual distribution of tissues, source-channel and shielding attenuation than the commonly employed TG-43 formalism which simply map homogeneous water dose distributions onto the patient. In this paper we give a comprehensive and thorough derivation of such an algorithm based on collapsed cone point-kernel superposition, and describe details of its implementation into a commercial treatment planning system for clinical use. Methods: A brachytherapy version of the collapsed-cone algorithm using analytical raytraces of the primary photon radiation followed by successive scattering dose calculation for once and multiply scattered photons is described in detail, including derivation of the corresponding set of recursive equations for energy transport along cone axes/transport lines and the coupling to clinical source modeling. Specific implementation issues for setting up of the calculation grid, handling of intravoxel gradients and voxels partly containing non patient applicator material are given. Results: Sample runs for two clinical cases are shown, one being a gynecological application with a tungsten-shielded applicator and one a breast implant. These two cases demonstrate the impact of improved dose calculation versus TG-43 formalism. Conclusions: Use of model-based dose calculation algorithms for brachytherapy taking the three-dimensional treatment geometry into account increases the dosimetric accuracy in planning and follow up of treatments. The comprehensive description and derivations provided gives a rigid background for further clinical, educational and research applications.

  • Contribution of Established Stroke Risk Factors to the Burden of Stroke in Young Adults
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Stroke. - 0039-2499. ; 48:7, s. 1744-1751
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and Purpose - As stroke in young adults is assumed to have different etiologies and risk factors than in older populations, the aim of this study was to examine the contribution of established potentially modifiable cardiovascular risk factors to the burden of stroke in young adults. Methods - A German nationwide case-control study based on patients enrolled in the SIFAP1 study (Stroke In Young Fabry Patients) 2007 to 2010 and controls from the population-based GEDA study (German Health Update) 2009 to 2010 was performed. Cases were 2125 consecutive patients aged 18 to 55 years with acute first-ever stroke from 26 clinical stroke centers; controls (age- and sex-matched, n=8500, without previous stroke) were from a nationwide community sample. Adjusted population-attributable risks of 8 risk factors (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease, smoking, heavy episodic alcohol consumption, low physical activity, and obesity) and their combinations for all stroke, ischemic stroke, and primary intracerebral hemorrhage were calculated. Results - Low physical activity and hypertension were the most important risk factors, accounting for 59.7% (95% confidence interval, 56.3-63.2) and 27.1% (95% confidence interval, 23.6-30.6) of all strokes, respectively. All 8 risk factors combined explained 78.9% (95% confidence interval, 76.3-81.4) of all strokes. Population-attributable risks of all risk factors were similar for all ischemic stroke subtypes. Population-attributable risks of most risk factors were higher in older age groups and in men. Conclusions - Modifiable risk factors previously established in older populations also account for a large part of stroke in younger adults, with 4 risk factors explaining almost 80% of stroke risk.

  • State of the Art of Automated Buses
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI AG. - 2071-1050. ; 10:9
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Urban transportation in the next few decades will shift worldwide toward electrification and automation, with the final aim of increasing energy efficiency and safety for passengers. Such a big change requires strong collaboration and efforts among public administration, research and stakeholders in developing, testing and promoting these technologies in public transportation. Working in this direction, this work provides a review of the impact of the introduction of driverless electric minibuses, for the first and last mile transportation, in public service. More specifically, this paper covers the state of the art in terms of technological background for automation, energy efficiency via electrification and the current state of the legal framework in Europe with a focus on the Baltic Sea Region.
