    • A brief literary approach to al-Qur'an; its unique form, language, and content. Like many other sane people experiencing sudden visions and revelations, the Prophet Muhammed appears to have feared at first that he had become obsessed, or possessed by a spirit, in the night of destiny and power, the lailat el-qadr, until he was convinced by the archangel Gabrail (and his trusted relative, the monotheist Waraqah) about his divine favour and his new mission as a receiver and reciter of the Word of God. In other works, the writer of this article has focused on how difficult and crucial the estimation of numinous experiences has been in the history Christianity, in particular to the Roman Catholic Church, the doctrines of which to a large extent are based upon the teachings of mystics (Gallery of Mirrors, 1998, xxi).In his translation of the inception bismi llāhi... ( بِسْمِ ٱللَّٰ), the author of the present article tentatively suggested that this important phrase in the text and in daily prayer does not only embrace and invoke the holy source of the truth and the revelated text proper, but furthermore involves a vow or oath ‘by Allah’, or ‘by the name of the one and only God’.Concerning the literary character of the sacred text it is observed that a euphonious rhyming prose is a general feature. The verses have no definite metre, but contain rhymes of different kinds, which in conjunction with the phonetic distinctiveness and vowels of the Arabic language give the text a heavy, almost rhythmic and flowing sound when read aloud. The rhymed prose, saj', in parts of the Book, can therefore in its original sonority be compared to all the metres of the oldest Arabic poetry (Wafir, Kamil, Khafif, etc.) in poetic power, and is of singular beauty. As regards the interpretation of the text proper, this is a special problem—as always when it comes to documents of a spiritual nature. The variants of interpretation have evoked many schools and sects, and sometimes vice versa. And just as the Catholic Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance reckoned with several levels of interpretation in alternately scholastic, alternately mysterious spirit (one can think of letterale, allegorico, morale and anagogico in Dante's time), it has been claimed by exegetes who experienced the Qur'an as an all-encompassing and infallible textbook that it harbours a sevenfold meaning. The seventh meaning known only by God.

  • In: Värld och vetande. - 0346-4873. ; 28:11, s. 338-343
  • Journal article (pop. science, debate, etc.)abstract
    • A brief history of the introduction and ritualization of tea, and how it became fashionable. This minor contribution also outlines a linguistic theory of how the two principal groups in the naming of this worldwide beverage can be explained by the two most important commercial routes—one WNW by land including the ancient Silk and Caravan roads—carrying North Chinese ‘chá’; the other WSW in more recent times by ship in the European Age of Sail (trading South-East Chinese ‘te’ or ‘ta’—at the Amoy and Quanzhou harbours, from Guangzhou and other ports of the South), and thus be derived from the modes of conveyance! The reason as well as the usage depend on linguistic geography, but above all the time slots of contact zones, specific transportation networks and waterways. The Swedish title of the article, meaning ‘The Way of Tea’, furthermore is an allusion to the Japanese tea ceremony, the cha-do, which is also touched upon in this context.
