  • Adolescents Who Self-Harm : The Patterns in Their Interpersonal and Psychosocial Difficulties
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of research on adolescence. - : Blackwell Publishing. - 1050-8392 .- 1532-7795. ; 28:4, s. 824-838
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We proposed that having mutually hostile interactions with others is a strong environmental stress factor that, together with diverse psychosocial problems, characterizes adolescents who self-harm. Using cluster analysis, this study examined the naturally occurring patterns of hostility conditions and psychosocial difficulties in a normative sample of 2,029 adolescents (50% boys; Mage  = 13.89). Results showed that self-harming behavior was significantly higher among the subgroup of adolescents with mutually hostile interactions who exhibited both internalizing and externalizing problems than among adolescents with other interpersonal-psychosocial configurations. Also, this subgroup of adolescents reported high impulsivity, anger dysregulation, and low self-esteem. These findings support recent research that indicates that adolescents who self-harm also tend to expose others to hostility and display externalizing symptoms.

  • Toward a New Understanding of Ethnic-Racial Settings for Ethnic-Racial Identity Development
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Research on Adolescence. - : Wiley. - 1050-8392 .- 1532-7795. ; 28:2, s. 262-276
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this conceptual article is to advance theory and research on one critical aspect of the context of ethnic-racial identity (ERI) development: ethnic-racial settings, or the objective and subjective nature of group representation within an individual's context. We present a new conceptual framework that consists of four dimensions: (1) perspective (that settings can be understood in both objective and subjective terms); (2) differentiation (how groups are defined in a setting); (3) heterogeneity (the range of groups in a setting); and (4) proximity (the distance between the individual and the setting). Clarifying this complexity is crucial for advancing a more coherent understanding of how ethnic-racial settings are related to ERI development.

  • The Interplay between Adolescents’ Friendships and the Exchange of Help : A Longitudinal Multiplex Social Network Study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of research on adolescence. - : Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Inc.. - 1050-8392 .- 1532-7795.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to unravel the interrelatedness of friendship and help, and to examine the characteristics of friendship and help networks. The effects of mutual versus one‐sided help relations on friendship initiation and maintenance, and vice versa, were examined. Friendship and help networks were analyzed (N = 953 students; 41 classrooms; Mage = 12.7). The results illustrate that friendship and help networks show some similarities, but only partly overlap and have distinct characteristics. Longitudinal multiplex social network analyses showed that mutual help was important for the maintenance of friendship, but not for the initiation of friendship. Further, particularly mutual friendships provided a context in which help took place. Implications of these findings are discussed.

  • Thymoma : a clinicopathological correlation of 1470 cases
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Human Pathology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0046-8177. ; 73, s. 7-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present 1470 surgical resections for thymoma identified in the pathology files of 14 institutions from 11 countries with the purpose of determining and correlating a simplified histological classification of thymoma and pathological staging with clinical outcome. The study population was composed of 720 men and 750 women between the ages of 12 and 86 years (average, 54.8 years). Clinically, 137 patients (17%) had a history of myasthenia gravis, 31 patients (3.8%) of other autoimmune disease, and 55 (6.8%) patients of another neoplastic process. Surgical resection was performed in all patients. Histologically, 1284 (87.13%) cases were thymomas (World Health Organization types A, B1, and B2, and mixed histologies), and 186 (12.7%) were atypical thymomas (World Health Organization type B3). Of the entire group, 630 (42.9%) were encapsulated thymomas, and 840 (57.9%) were invasive thymomas in different stages. Follow-up information was obtained in 1339 (91%) patients, who subsequently were analyzed by univariate and multivariate statistical analysis. Follow-up ranging from 1 to 384 months was obtained (mean, 69.2 months) showing tumor recurrence in 136 patients (10.1%), whereas 227 died: 64 (28.2%) due to tumor and 163 (71.8%) due to other causes. Statistical analysis shows that separation of these tumors into thymoma and atypical thymoma is statistically significant (P =.001), whereas tumor staging into categories of encapsulated, minimally invasive, and invasion into adjacent organs offers a meaningful clinical assessment with a P =.038. Our findings suggest that our simplified histological schema and pathological staging system are excellent predictors of clinical outcome.
