  • Early growth of planted Norway spruce and Scots pine after site preparation in Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Forest Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0282-7581 .- 1651-1891. ; 34, s. 678-688
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) have different site preferences, but silvicultural recommendations for their regeneration at planting (including site preparation) are often the same. Thus, there is a clear need for greater understanding of species-specific interactions between site preparation and site properties. To meet this need, the species' growth and survival have been monitored at both fertile and poor sites in northern and southern Sweden. At each of these sites, effects of three types of site preparation - removed humus (RH), deep soil cultivation (DSC) and control (C, no site preparation) - were compared. Results show that Scots pine grew more rapidly initially than Norway spruce, and DSC site preparation promoted growth of both species. However, on poor sites there was a delay in growth responses. In addition, removal of organic material in the RH treatment caused a sustained growth check of Norway spruce, but not for Scots pine. This study confirms that it is beneficial to use site preparation as it increases the survival of both species and may increase growth. However, site preparation methods that reduce the amount of organic material in the planting spots should be avoided for Norway spruce.

  • Natural hazards, internal migration and protests in Bangladesh
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Peace Research. - : Sage Publications. - 0022-3433 .- 1460-3578. ; 58:1, s. 33-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Does internal migration following natural hazards increase the likelihood of protests in migrant-receiving areas? To address the question, this study first looks at the extent to which experiencing different forms of natural hazards contributes to a household’s decision to leave their district of residence. In a second step, the article explores whether that internal migration flow increases the number of protest events in migrant-hosting districts. In doing so, it contributes to the existing debate on the extent to which natural hazards impact the likelihood of social contention, and the role of migration as a linking pathway in that relationship. The impact of climate-related shocks may erode household assets and therefore adaptive capacity in ways that can eventually influence decisions to migrate to largerurban centres. Although migrants are agents of economical and technological change, urban environments may impose challenges to recently arrived migrants and their host communities, affecting the motivations and mobilization resources of urban social groups to protest. As a consequence, the probability of urban unrest in these locations is expected to increase. To test this, I use geo-referenced household-level data from Bangladesh for the period 2010–15, which records households’ experiences of different forms of natural hazard and internal migration flows, available from the Bangladesh Integrated Household Survey. It combines this with data on protests, derived from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data. Findings suggest that flood hazards in combination with loss of assets increase the likelihood of internal migration, but unlike other types of domestic mobility, hazard-related migration does notincrease the frequency of protests in migrants’ districts of destination.

  • The Stockholm Gang Intervention and Prevention Project (SGIP) : introducing a holistic approach to gang enforcement
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Youth gangs in international perspective. - New York : Springer. - 9781461416586 - 9781461416593 ; , s. 251-269
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Some commentators have suggested that there are important differences between American and European gangs, such as the availability of guns, cars, and drugs (Curry and Decker 2003). Researchers contend that this would arguably change the very nature of European gangs compared to American gangs. Curry and Decker (2003) also point out that American and European gangs differ in the type of responses they incur from society. European responses, for example, are more concerned with social opportunity approaches, whereas American responses are more concerned with gang suppression. This chapter will examine the early criminal network and gang development research in Sweden and delineate some of the police responses to the phenomenon. Furthermore, this chapter will address recent gang developments in Sweden and highlight the essential components and working mechanisms of the Stockholm Gang Intervention and Prevention Project (SGIP)—a holistic enforcement response to the growing gang problem in Sweden. SGIP will test various theoretical components of gang enforcement, intervention, and prevention and apply them to street gangs in Stockholm. The goal is to fi nd a method that is practical and applicable to this complex problem. Consequently, this chapter will discuss issues and challenges surrounding the implementation of prevention and intervention policies.

  • Isolation and characterisation of putative adhesins from Helicobacter pylori with affinity for heparan sulphate proteoglycan
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Medical Microbiology. - 0022-2615. ; 50:3, s. 215-222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A pool of heparan sulphate-binding proteins (HSBPs) from Helicobacter pylori culture supernates was obtained by sequential ammonium sulphate precipitation and affinity chromatography on heparin-Sepharose, The chromatographic procedure yielded one major fraction that contained proteins with heparan sulphate affinity as revealed by inhibition studies of heparan sulphate binding to H. pylori cells. Preparative iso-electric focusing, SDS-PACE and blotting experiments, with peroxidase(POD)-labelled heparan sulphate as a probe, indicated the presence of two major extracellular proteins with POD-heparan sulphate affinity. One protein had a molecular mass of 66.2 kDa and a pI of 5.4, whilst the second protein had a molecular mass of 71.5 kDa and a pI of 5.0. The N-terminal amino acid sequence of the 71.5-kDa HSBP did not show homology to any other heparin-binding protein, nor to known proteins of H, pylori, whereas the 66.2-kDa HSBP showed a high homology to an Escherichia coli chaperon protein and equine haemoglobin. A third HSBP was isolated from an outer-membrane protein (OMP) fraction of H. pylori cells with a molecular mass of 47.2 kDa, The amino acid sequence of an internal peptide of the OMP-HSBP did not show homology to the extracellular HSBP of H, pylori, or to another microbial HSBP.
