    • Ingatorp church, in the province of Småland in the south of Sweden, is recognised as a high standard art deco church. In the outskirt of the churchyard stands a corner timbered shed that has been dated by dendrochronological analysis and C-14 to 1219-1239. This building is one of the oldest wooden buildings in Sweden beside the timbered church in Granhult.

    • Sweden is full of cultural treasures, and their maintenance requires a great deal of resources. One critical resource is knowledge. Many of our protected cultural environments are the result of extensive craftsmanship, which means that successful conservation of cultural heritage is not possible without advanced craft skills. A simple division into material and immaterial cultural heritage is problematic in terms of craftsmanship, since one cannot survive without the other. Craftsmanship is required for effective conservation, and conservation is necessary for the survival of many crafts. Crafts have to be practised – only then are they maintained and developed. The Craft Laboratory is a new way of dealing with this old problem, that is, the need for craft skills in the conservation of old buildings and cultural environments. The University of Gothenburg and the Swedish National Heritage Board have therefore, together with the Church of Sweden, the National Property Board Sweden, Region Västra Götaland, City of Mariestad, the Swedish Local Heritage Federation as well as craft enterprises and trade organisations, opened a national centre for crafts in conservation. The main task of the centre is to document, pass down and develop weak and endangered craft skills, and to initiate crafts-oriented research and development work within the practice of conservation of cultural heritage. The ambition is also to develop and provide expert support and a knowledge bank for professionals who work in the field or are in charge of the upkeep of our cultural treasures. This text presents the operating blueprint of the Craft Laboratory. Although the issues of motive and theoretical perspectives are addressed to some extent, this introductory text is primarily meant to serve the function of a programme specification. It is intended to answer general questions: What exactly is the Craft Laboratory? What purpose does it have? It starts out by defining and discussing the concepts and epithet included in the heading. How are the crafts in conservation demarcated from other craft practices? What ambition is contained in the epithet ‘national centre’? What do we mean when we refer to the laboratory approach? The text will then briefly present the organisation and approach of the Craft Laboratory using examples from current projects. How are craft skills documented? How are theory and practice integrated? What types of projects and activities can be arranged?

  • Södra Råda och rekonstruktion som hantverksvetenskaplig metod : The medieval wooden church Södra Råda - Reconstruction as a method in craft science
  • 2011
  • In: Hantverkslaboratorium. Red. Eva Löfgren.. - Mariestad : University of Gothenburg. - 9789197938204
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In November 2001 the medieval church Södra Råda burnt to the ground in an act of pyromania. The church had a log timbered structure dating to 1320 and world famous wall paintings by Master Amund from 1494. Among Sweden’s 3400 churches and chapels, only 10 medieval log timber churches remains. Hence, the Swedish national heritage board initiated a process, still ongoing, proclaiming that the church should be reconstructed “as a pedagogical example to enhance craft practice and historical knowledge of medieval churches”. This article investigates the new findings on medieval wooden church building as well as the methodology in full-scale reconstruction, using craft skills as means of interpretation of historical knowledge. The reconstruction functions as a trans-disciplinary laboratory, testing findings from archaeological excavations, archive studies and in-depth survey and dendrochronology analysis of the remaining medieval wooden churches.

  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Tacit record: augmented documentation methods to access traditional blacksmith skills
  • 2013
  • In: NODEM 2013. Beyond Control. The collaborative museum and its challanges. International Conference on Design and Digital Heritage. Stockholm, Sweden 2013, Proceedings.. - 9789185960231 ; , s. 143-160
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Traditional craftsmanship is a specified domain in UNESCO’s Convention for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage. During 19th and 20th centuries, museums and archives in the western world have been collecting a considerable amount of artefacts and produced records of trades, workshops and manual procedures referring to threatened traditional crafts. What potential value is embedded in the records on traditional crafts? To whom and for what purpose may this documented heritage be of interest or have use value? We find these questions critical to the subject of museology, and how to develop appropriate documentation methods as well as safeguarding strategies for the intangible cultural heritage. This paper critically investigates film making of traditional craftsmanship, and experiment augmented documentation methods to elicit tacit dimensions and multi-sensory aspects of craft skills. The text is grounded on a case study of a documentary from early 1970th, recording two old blacksmiths making a wrought scythe. This documentary has generated several research questions: How instructive is this documentary, as learning resource for blacksmiths of today? What meaningful information dwells in the colour and sound of the work process? How does the discontinuity of the edited film affect the intelligibility of the process in action? The tacit dimension of craftsmanship has been investigated in philosophical and pedagogical research (Gamble 2002, Mayer 2003, Polanyi 1958, Schön 1983, 1987), management and organisation theory (Agyris 2003, Kolb 1984), and recently in the emerging field of craft research (Adamson 2010, Niedderer 2009). However, the edge focus on documentation methodology to elicit the tacit dimensions of traditional craftsmanship is not extensively examined. Peer research to this study is performed at The Art and Design Research Centre (ADRC) at Sheffield Hallam University (e.g. Hjort-Lassen & Wood 2013, McCullough 1997, Wood 2006, Wood, Rust & Horne 2009) and the Craft Laboratory at the university of Gothenburg (e.g. Almevik 2012, Jarefjäll & Sjömar 2011, Karlsson 2013) exploring the use of film record and time-geography in documentation and display of craftsmanship. The documentary is scrutinised through a time-space path and a procedure analysis. Setting out from the data and interpretation of the film record, the craft procedure has been re-enacted by the authors. The re-enactment gives a critical reference to the documentary, exposing discontinuities lacunas, misinterpretations and hideouts of tacit blacksmith knowledge. Core problems in understanding skills and judgments made by the old blacksmiths relate to lacking qualities in the documentary concerning colour and authentic timeline. One sub-experiment concerning the judgment of colour in the process of hardening and welding is carried out by visual and IR measure. The general outcome of this investigation, contributes to a documentation methodology for heritage craft skills. A set of craft protocols is tested along with a critical discussion on documentation practice to meet up the agenda of “living” cultural heritage. The conclusion in perspective of museum collection and exhibitions is, that crafts persons need to become involved in the work in heritage institutions, not only as objects or informants but also as work-companions and agents of generic knowledge.
