  • A user driven approach to develop a cognitive prosthetic to address the unmet needs of people with mild dementia
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Pervasive and Mobile Computing. - : Elsevier BV. - 1574-1192 .- 1873-1589. ; 5:3, s. 253-267
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to provide the details of the approach adopted in the development of a cognitive prosthetic aimed to help address the unmet needs of people with mild dementia. The approach adopted is based on a waterfall style approach consisting of a series of three phases each of which contributes to the progression and improvement of a cognitive prosthetic-based solution. Within each phase, distinct stages of design, development and evaluation of the cognitive solution are conducted. The current paper discusses the distinct stages conducted in the first phase of the project which resulted in the design and development of a user driven solution based on the needs of 17 patient/carer dyads across three trial sites.

  • The development of personalised cognitive prosthetics
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 30th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. ; , s. 787-790
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Persons suffering from mild dementia can benefit from a form of cognitive prosthetic which can be used to assist them with their day to day activities. Within our current work we are aiming to develop a successful user-validated cognitive prosthetic for persons with mild dementia. We have devised a three phased waterfall methodology to support our developments. Based on the evaluation of the first of these phases which involved the processes of user requirements gathering, prototype development and evaluation of in situ deployment of the technology we have been able to guide the technical development within the second phase of our work. Within this paper we provide an overview of the first phase of our methodology and demonstrate how we have used the results from this to guide the second phase of our work, especially with regards to the notion of personalisation.

  • Antennal and behavioural response of codling moth Cydia pomonella to plant volatiles
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of applied entomology. - : Wiley. - 0931-2048 .- 1439-0418. ; 128:7, s. 488-493
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Identification of host volatile compounds attractive to codling moth Cydia pomonella, a most important insect of apple, will contribute to the development of safe control techniques. Synthetic apple volatiles in two doses were tested for antennal and behavioural activity in codling moth. Female antennae strongly responded to (Z)3-hexenol, (Z)3-hexenyl benzoate, (Z)3-hexenyl hexanoate, (+/-)-linalool and E,E-alpha-farnesene. Two other compounds eliciting a strong antennal response were the pear ester, ethyl (E,Z)-2,4-decadienoate, and its corresponding aldehyde, E,E-2,4-decadienal, which is a component of the larval defence secretion of the European apple sawfly. Attraction of codling moth to compounds eliciting a strong antennal response was tested in a wind tunnel. Male moths were best attracted to a blend of (E,E)-alpha-farnesene, (E)-beta-farnesene and ethyl (E,Z)-2,4-decadienoate. The aldehyde E,E-2,4-decadienal had an antagonistic effect when added to the above mixture.

  • COGKNOW : helping people with mild dementia navigate their day
  • 2007
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dementia is a progressive, chronic disease affecting 5% of all persons above 65 and over 40% of people over 90. The aim of the COGKNOW project is to achieve a breakthrough with research that addresses the needs of those with dementia, particularly those with mild dementia living in the community. This entails cognitive reinforcement in four main areas: helping people to remember, helping to maintain social contact, helping with performing daily life and recreational activities and finally enhance feelings of safety. Based on a sound foundation of needs reported in dementia literature, workshops and individual interviews have been carried out with dementia sufferers and their carers in three European countries. A ranked analysis of information from workshops and interviews, and the state of the art of successful ICT solutions will be the basis for formulating the functionalities of the technical solution and for the development of a cognitive prosthetic device with associated services for people with mild dementia. The research and evaluation will be conducted from human factors, technology, and business perspectives in three phases of one year each. In this paper we discuss the design of the COGKNOW project, the first results of the user needs inquiry workshops and the ICT solutions the COGKNOW project will focus on in the first year.

  • Transition to non-collective states at high spin in Xe-124
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001. ; 36:1, s. 21-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states in Xe-124 were populated in the reaction Se-82(Ca-48, 6n) Xe-124 and gamma-ray coincidence relationships were measured with the Gammasphere spectrometer. Two new bands are observed and several of the previously known bands are extended in the high-as well as in the low-spin region. Two irregular high-spin structures are also added. The irregularities are a fingerprint of a transition from collective to non-collective behaviour. Configuration assignments to the new structures are proposed on the basis of systematics and by comparing experimental properties with calculations within the framework of the cranking model.

  • Influence of the Exon 3-deleted/full-length Growth Hormone Receptor Polymorphism on the Response to Growth Hormone Replacement Therapy in Adults with Severe Growth Hormone Deficiency. : d3-GHR isoform in GHD adults
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: The Journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism. - : The Endocrine Society. - 0021-972X .- 1945-7197. ; 94:2, s. 639-644
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context: There is considerable individual variation in the clinical response to growth hormone (GH) replacement therapy in GH deficient (GHD) adults. Useful predictors of treatment response are lacking. Objective: To assess the influence of the exon 3-deleted (d3-GHR) and full-length (fl-GHR) GH receptor isoforms on the response to GH replacement therapy in adults with severe GHD. Design, Patients: 124 adult GHD patients (79 men, median age 50 years) were studied before and after 12 months of GH therapy. GHD patients were divided into those bearing fl/fl alleles (Group 1) and those bearing at least one d3-GHR allele (Group 2), and the genotype was related to the effects of GH therapy on IGF-I levels and total body fat (BF). Intervention: GH dose was individually titrated to obtain normal serum IGF-I levels. Main Outcome Measures: GHR genotype was determined by PCR amplification, IGF-I levels by immunoassay, and BF by a four-compartment model. Results: Seventy-two (58%) patients had fl/fl genotype and were classified as Group 1, while 52 (42%) had at least one d3-GHR allele and were classified as Group 2 (40 were heterozygous and 12 were homozygous). At baseline, there were no significant differences in the study groups. Changes in IGF-I and BF after 12 months of GH treatment did not differ significantly between the two genotype groups. Conclusion: The presence of d3-GHR allele did not influence the response to GH replacement therapy in our cohort of adults with severe GHD.
