  • Inclusion through Design : Engaging Children with Disabilities in Development of Multi-Sensory Environments
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 12th biennial European conference of the Association for the Advancement of Assistive Technology in Europe, AAATE 2013, held in Vilamoura, Portugal, in September 2013. ; 33:Assistive Technology: From Research to Practice, s. 628-633
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is based on outcomes from SID (http://sid.desiign.org), a three-year project where twenty-four children with profound intellectual disabilities visited three MSE centres. SID's aim was to develop and demonstrate the potentials of interactive design in and for MSE practices together with the children and the pedagogical staff. In the project, we developed artefacts that were designed to be part of and mediate the explorations rather than to become end products. The designs were explored by the children at the MSE centres and further developed depending on what the children did and what seemed relevant to them. There are few documented examples in the literature where children with profound developmental disabilities are involved as active participants in design activities. We present and discuss the participants' roles in SID's research and development process based on experiences and material from the project, with a hope that this paper can serve as an example of what such a development process might look like and as inspiration for future initiatives.

  • Motivation, Peer Learning and Feedback in Flexible Learning
  • 2012
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on material from previous classes, three features were examined 1) the respective roles of student-to-student, teacher-to-student and student-to-teacher feedback, 2) the ways in which students collaborated with each other in a peer-learning mode, and 3) the strategies used to enhance the students’ extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. The purpose was to study and describe how feedback, peer learning and motivation were manifested in two VLE-based courses at our department, in order to learn how they relate to constructive alignment and how they support flexible learning in diverse student groups, and based on that suggest changes to enhance student learning.

  • Bringing the Mobile Context into Industrial Design and Development
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: NordiCHI 2012 Proceedings of the 7th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction: Making Sense Through Design. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. ; , s. 149-152
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we discuss the dynamic nature of mobile usage, and how this impacts on design and evaluation, particularly in an industrial setting. We argue that current industry oriented design tools need to be extended to cater more effectively to the highly dynamic and context-dependent nature of mobile usage -- we suggest more focus should be put on doing instead of on being. In order to achieve this we suggest a lightweight design/insight tool developed to suit industrial practice: context cards. These cards allow designers, developers, and usability experts to perform lightweight explorations of the consequences of a range of mobile situations.

  • A Real-World Study of an Audio-Tactile Tourist Guide
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 14th international conference on Human-computer interaction with mobile devices and services. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 9781450311052 ; , s. 335-344
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports on the in-context evaluation of an audio-tactile interactive tourist guide - one test was done in a medieval city center, and the other was done at an archaeological site. The activity theory framework was used as a perspective to guide design, field-study and analysis. The evaluation shows that the guide allows users to experience an augmented reality, while keeping the environment in focus (in contrast with the common key-hole like experience that on-screen augmented reality generates). The evaluation also confirms the usefulness of extending the vibrational feedback to convey also distance information as well as directional information.

  • Demonstration of an Audio-tactile Tourist Guide
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: MobileHCI '12 Proceedings of the 14th international conference on Human-computer interaction with mobile devices and services companion. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 9781450314435 ; , s. 151-152
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An audio-tactile interactive tourist guide is demonstrated, including the possibility to be guided to points of interest. In contrast with the key-hole like experience of on-screen augmented reality, this guide makes use of the non-visual modalities to create a more immersive augmented experience. Sound windows from the past and verbal historical information complement discrete tactile guidance along a trail.

  • Universal Design 2014: Three Days of Creativity and Diversity
  • 2014
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Universal Design, Design for All and Inclusive Design are all aimed at dismantling physical and social barriers to inclusion in all areas of life. Engagement in universal design is on the increase worldwide as practitioners and researchers explore creative and desirable solutions to shape the future of universal design products and practices. This book is a collection of the papers presented at UD2014, the International Conference on Universal Design, held in Lund, Sweden, in June 2014. The conference offered a creative and diverse meeting place for all participants to exchange knowledge, experiences and ideas, and to build global connections and creative networks for future work on universal design. The themes of UD2014 span many aspects of societal life, and the papers included here cover areas as diverse as architecture, public transport, educational and play environments, housing, universal workspaces, and the Internet of things, as well as designs and adaptations for assistive technology. The book clearly demonstrates the breadth of universal design and its ongoing adoption in societies all over the world, and will be of interest to anyone whose work involves building a more inclusive environment for all.
