  • Polarimetric Properties of Event Horizon Telescope Targets from ALMA
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : American Astronomical Society. - 2041-8213 .- 2041-8205. ; 910:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the results from a full polarization study carried out with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) during the first Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) campaign, which was conducted in 2017 April in the lambda 3 mm and lambda 1.3 mm bands, in concert with the Global mm-VLBI Array (GMVA) and the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), respectively. We determine the polarization and Faraday properties of all VLBI targets, including Sgr A*, M87, and a dozen radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs), in the two bands at several epochs in a time window of 10 days. We detect high linear polarization fractions (2%-15%) and large rotation measures (RM > 10(3.3)-10(5.5) rad m(-2)), confirming the trends of previous AGN studies at millimeter wavelengths. We find that blazars are more strongly polarized than other AGNs in the sample, while exhibiting (on average) order-of-magnitude lower RM values, consistent with the AGN viewing angle unification scheme. For Sgr A* we report a mean RM of (-4.2 0.3) x 10(5) rad m(-2) at 1.3 mm, consistent with measurements over the past decade and, for the first time, an RM of (-2.1 0.1) x 10(5) rad m(-2) at 3 mm, suggesting that about half of the Faraday rotation at 1.3 mm may occur between the 3 mm photosphere and the 1.3 mm source. We also report the first unambiguous measurement of RM toward the M87 nucleus at millimeter wavelengths, which undergoes significant changes in magnitude and sign reversals on a one year timescale, spanning the range from -1.2 to 0.3 x 10(5) rad m(-2) at 3 mm and -4.1 to 1.5 x 10(5) rad m(-2) at 1.3 mm. Given this time variability, we argue that, unlike the case of Sgr A*, the RM in M87 does not provide an accurate estimate of the mass accretion rate onto the black hole. We put forward a two-component model, comprised of a variable compact region and a static extended region, that can simultaneously explain the polarimetric properties observed by both the EHT (on horizon scales) and ALMA (which observes the combined emission from both components). These measurements provide critical constraints for the calibration, analysis, and interpretation of simultaneously obtained VLBI data with the EHT and GMVA.

  • Solid solution softening at room temperature and hardening at elevated temperatures: a case by minor Mn addition in a (HfNbTi) 85 Mo 15 refractory high entropy alloy
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Materials Research Express. - 2053-1591. ; 10:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To address the conflict between room-temperature (RT) ductility and high-temperature (HT) strength in single phase bcc-structured refractory high entropy alloys, here we propose to use minor alloying to achieve solid solution softening at RT and simultaneously, solid solution hardening at HT. Our strategy was manifested by minor Mn additions in a RT brittle (HfNbTi)85Mo15 refractory high entropy alloy, where nominal Mn additions ranging from 2 at. % down to 0.03 at. % were seen to soften the base (HfNbTi)85Mo15 alloy at RT, while to harden the base alloy at the temperature range from 400 to 800 °C. The yield stress in all studied alloys showed a three-stage pattern, characterized by a temperature dependent stage at temperatures below 400 °C, followed by a temperature independent stage at intermediate temperatures ranging from 400 to 800 °C, and finally another temperature dependent stage at temperatures higher than 800 °C. The mechanisms for solid solution softening and solid solution hardening in single phase bcc-structured refractory high entropy alloys were discussed, together with their temperature dependence.

  • Bupi Yishen Formula Versus Losartan for Non-Diabetic Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease: A Randomized Controlled Trial
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in pharmacology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1663-9812. ; 11, s. 627185-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) might have benefits in patients with non-diabetic chronic kidney disease (CKD), but there is a lack of high-quality evidence, especially in CKD4. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of Bupi Yishen Formula (BYF) vs. losartan in patients with non-diabetic CKD4. This trial was a multicenter, double-blind, double-dummy, randomized controlled trial that was carried out from 11-08-2011 to 07-20-2015. Patients were assigned (1:1) to receive either BYF or losartan for 48 weeks. The primary outcome was the change in the slope of the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) over 48 weeks. The secondary outcomes were the composite of end-stage kidney disease, death, doubling of serum creatinine, stroke, and cardiovascular events. A total of 567 patients were randomized to BYF (n = 283) or losartan (n = 284); of these, 549 (97%) patients were included in the final analysis. The BYF group had a slower renal function decline particularly prior to 12 weeks over the 48-week duration (between-group mean difference of eGFR slopes: −2.25 ml/min/1.73 m2/year, 95% confidence interval [CI]: −4.03,−0.47), and a lower risk of composite outcome of death from any cause, doubling of serum creatinine level, end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), stroke, or cardiovascular events (adjusted hazard ratio = 0.61, 95%CI: 0.44,0.85). No significant between-group differences were observed in the incidence of adverse events. We conclude that BYF might have renoprotective effects among non-diabetic patients with CKD4 in the first 12 weeks and over 48 weeks, but longer follow-up is required to evaluate the long-term effects.Clinical Trial Registration:http://www.chictr.org.cn, identifier ChiCTR-TRC-10001518.

  • LensWatch. I. Resolved HST Observations and Constraints on the Strongly Lensed Type Ia Supernova 2022qmx (SN Zwicky)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 948:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Supernovae (SNe) that have been multiply imaged by gravitational lensing are rare and powerful probes for cosmology. Each detection is an opportunity to develop the critical tools and methodologies needed as the sample of lensed SNe increases by orders of magnitude with the upcoming Vera C. Rubin Observatory and Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. The latest such discovery is of the quadruply imaged Type Ia SN 2022qmx (aka, SN Zwicky) at z = 0.3544. SN Zwicky was discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility in spatially unresolved data. Here we present follow-up Hubble Space Telescope observations of SN Zwicky, the first from the multicycle LensWatch (www.lenswatch.org) program. We measure photometry for each of the four images of SN Zwicky, which are resolved in three WFC3/UVIS filters (F475W, F625W, and F814W) but unresolved with WFC3/IR F160W, and present an analysis of the lensing system using a variety of independent lens modeling methods. We find consistency between lens-model-predicted time delays (less than or similar to 1 day), and delays estimated with the single epoch of Hubble Space Telescope colors (less than or similar to 3.5 days), including the uncertainty from chromatic microlensing (similar to 1-1.5 days). Our lens models converge to an Einstein radius of theta(E) = 0.168 (+0.009)(-0.005) the smallest yet seen in a lensed SN system. The standard candle nature of SN Zwicky provides magnification estimates independent of the lens modeling that are brighter than predicted by similar to 1.7 (-0.6) (+0.8) mag and similar to 0.9 (-0.6) (+0.8) mag for two of the four images, suggesting significant microlensing and/or additional substructure beyond the flexibility of our image-position mass models.

  • Genetically Determined Circulating Levels of Cytokines and the Risk of Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in genetics. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-8021. ; 13, s. 802464-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Accumulation of inflammatory leukocytes in articular tissues is the hallmark feature of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Increasing evidence from observational studies has suggested that several cytokines may be involved in the development of RA. However, traditional observational studies are susceptible to bias from confounding and reverse causation; therefore, the potential causal relationships of individual cytokines with the risk of RA remain elusive. Objective: In this study, we evaluated whether genetically determined circulating levels of cytokines were associated with the risk of RA by performing Mendelian randomization (MR).Methods: We identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with circulating levels of cytokines and growth factors from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) including 8,293 participants of Finnish ancestry as instrumental variables (IVs). The association estimates of these IVs with the risk of RA were obtained from a GWAS meta-analysis including 14,361 RA cases and 43,923 controls of European ancestry. We conducted a series of MR analyses to assess the relationship between genetically determined circulating cytokines and the risk of RA, including the random-effects inverse variance-weighted, weighted-median, MR-Egger regression, and MR pleiotropy residual sum and outlier tests. For potential cytokine-RA associations supported by MR evidence, sensitivity analyses were further performed using restricted IV sets of SNPs with colocalization evidence and that excluding pleiotropic SNPs.Results: In the primary MR analysis, there was a suggestive inverse association between genetically determined circulating level of macrophage inflammatory protein-1β (MIP-1b) and the risk of RA [odds ratio (OR): 0.95, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.92-0.99, p = 0.016]. The effect estimates were similar in alternative MR analyses. Among SNPs used as IVs for MIP-1b, we found 92 SNPs without documented pleiotropy and three SNPs with evidence of colocalization. The association of MIP-1b with RA from sensitivity analyses using these two sets of restricted IVs remained stable. Conclusion: Our study suggests that genetically determined elevated circulating level of MIP-1b may be associated with a lower risk of RA. Further studies are warranted to determine how MIP-1b and related pathways may contribute to the development of RA.
