  • A polymer neural probe with tunable flexibility
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 6th International IEEE/EMBS Conference on Neural Engineering (NER). - 1948-3546. - 9781467319690 ; , s. 691-694
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel polymeric material, off stoichiometry thiol-ene-epoxy (OSTE+), has been evaluated for the fabrication of neural implants. OSTE+ is easily photo-structurable and exhibits mechanical properties suitable for stable implantation of the probe into brain tissue, while being sufficiently soft at physiological temperatures to reduce living tissue damage. The facile processing of OSTE+ allows use in applications where SU-8 or polyimide currently are the materials of choice. Uniquely, OSTE+ has a Young’s modulus of 1.9 GPa at 10 °C decreasing almost two orders of magnitude to 30 MPa at 40 °C, which can be compared to the Young’s modulus of 2.1 GPa for SU-8. We show a probe, with nine gold electrode sites, implanted into 0.5% agar at 40 °C using active cooling during the implantation.

  • μ-Foil Polymer Electrode Array for Intracortical Neural Recordings
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: IEEE Journal of Translational Engineering in Health and Medicine. ; 2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have developed a multichannel electrode array—termed μ-foil—that comprises ultrathin and flexible electrodes protruding from a thin foil at fixed distances. In addition to allowing some of the active sites to reach less compromised tissue, the barb-like protrusions that also serves the purpose of anchoring the electrode array into the tissue. This paper is an early evaluation of technical aspects and performance of this electrode array in acute in vitro/in vivo experiments. The interface impedance was reduced by up to two decades by electroplating the active sites with platinum black. The platinum black also allowed for a reduced phase lag for higher frequency components. The distance between the protrusions of the electrode array was tailored to match the architecture of the rat cerebral cortex. In vivo acute measurements confirmed a high signal-to-noise ratio for the neural recordings, and no significant crosstalk between recording channels.

  • Effects of self-rated health on sick leave, disability pension, hospital admissions and mortality. A population-based longitudinal study of nearly 15,000 observations among Swedish women and men.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: BMC public health. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-2458. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Simple global self-ratings of health (SRH) have become increasingly used in national and international public health monitoring, and in recent decades recommended as a standard part of health surveys. Monitoring developments in population health requires identification and use of health measures, valid in relation to targets for population health. The aim of the present study was to investigate associations between SRH and sick leave, disability pension, hospital admissions, and mortality, adjusted for effects of significant covariates, in a large population-based cohort. The analyses were based on screening data from eight population-based cohorts in southern and central Sweden, and on official register data regarding sick-leave, disability pension, hospital admissions, and death, with little or no data loss. Sampling was performed 1973-2003. The study population consisted of 11,880 women and men, age 25-99 years, providing 14,470 observations. Information on SRH, socio-demographic data, lifestyle variables and somatic and psychological symptoms were obtained from questionnaires. There was a significant negative association between SRH and sick leave (Beta -13.2, p<0.0001, and -9.5, p<0.01, in women and men, respectively), disability pension (Hazard ratio 0.77, p<0.0001 and 0.76, p<0.0001, in women and men, respectively), and mortality, adjusted for covariates. SRH was also significantly associated with hospital admissions in men (Hazard ratio 0.87, p<0.0001), but not in women (Hazard ratio 0.96, p0.20). Associations between SRH on the one hand, and sick leave, disability pension, hospital admission, and mortality, on the other, were robust during the follow-up period. SRH had strong predictive validity in relation to use of social insurance facilities and health care services, and to mortality. Associations were strong and robust during follow-up.

  • Arbogaåns avrinningsområde : Recipientkontroll 2010
  • 2011

  • Biogrid-a microfluidic device for large-scale enzyme-free dissociation of stem cell aggregates.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Lab on a Chip. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1473-0189 .- 1473-0197. ; 11, s. 3241-3248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Culturing stem cells as free-floating aggregates in suspension facilitates large-scale production of cells in closed systems, for clinical use. To comply with GMP standards, the use of substances such as proteolytic enzymes should be avoided. Instead of enzymatic dissociation, the growing cell aggregates may be mechanically cut at passage, but available methods are not compatible with large-scale cell production and hence translation into the clinic becomes a severe bottle-neck. We have developed the Biogrid device, which consists of an array of micrometerscale knife edges, micro-fabricated in silicon, and a manifold in which the microgrid is placed across the central fluid channel. By connecting one side of the Biogrid to a syringe or a pump and the other side to the cell culture, the culture medium with suspended cell aggregates can be aspirated, forcing the aggregates through the microgrid, and ejected back to the cell culture container. Large aggregates are thereby dissociated into smaller fragments while small aggregates pass through the microgrid unaffected. As proof-of-concept, we demonstrate that the Biogrid device can be successfully used for repeated passage of human neural stem/progenitor cells cultured as so-called neurospheres, as well as for passage of suspension cultures of human embryonic stem cells. We also show that human neural stem/progenitor cells tolerate transient pressure changes far exceeding those that will occur in a fluidic system incorporating the Biogrid microgrids. Thus, by using the Biogrid device it is possible to mechanically passage large quantities of cells in suspension cultures in closed fluidic systems, without the use of proteolytic enzymes.

  • Social Trust and Religion in Sweden : Theological Belief vs. Social Organization
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Religion and Civil Society in Europe. - Dordrecht : Springer Publishing Company. - 9789400768147 - 9789400768154 ; , s. 109-124
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • he question of whether religion and religiosity is positively or negatively related to social trust has been widely debated. In this chapter we will, using data from a local level survey on trust in Sweden, test whether religiosity as belief and religion as social organization correlate in any way with social trust in the specific case of a highly secular society. We are applying a multilevel approach in which we introduce both individual and contextual level data (church attendance and church membership) and where our focus will be on the local or community level. We conclude that while general surveys on trust suggest, if anything, a negative relationship between religiosity and social trust, one can, even in a highly secular country like Sweden, identify a modest positive correlation between trust and religion, which, however, is limited to religion as social organization.
