  • Skin cancer identification using multifrequency electrical impedance - A potential screening tool
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering. - 0018-9294 .- 1558-2531. ; 51:12, s. 2097-2102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electrical bio-impedance can be used to assess skin cancers and other cutaneous lesions. The aim of this study was to distinguish skin cancer from benign nevi using multifrequency impedance spectra. Electrical impedance spectra of about 100 skin cancers and 511 benign nevi were measured. Impedance of reference skin was measured ipsi-laterally to the lesions. The impedance relation between lesion and reference skin was used to distinguish the cancers from the nevi. It was found that it is possible to separate malignant melanoma from benign nevi with 75% specificity at 100% sensitivity, and to distinguish nonmelanoma skin cancer from benign nevi with 87% specificity at 100% sensitivity. The power of skin cancer detection using electrical impedance is as good as, or better than, conventional visual screening made by general practitioners.

  • Variation of skin properties within human forearms demonstrated by non-invasive detection and multi-way analysis
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Skin research and technology. - : Wiley. - 0909-752X .- 1600-0846. ; 8:3, s. 194-201
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: It is known that the properties of human skin vary locally. The purpose of this study was to investigate the properties of human volar forearms even further using advanced non-invasive techniques and numerical methods. Methods: The skin properties of human volar forearms were investigated using measurements of trans epidermal water loss and multifrequency electrical impedance. Eight sites on the forearms of 27 healthy volunteers were measured. The sites were oriented as squares, four sites on both left and right forearm, approximately 40-50 mm apart. Results: Analysis of variance showed significant differences for epidermal water loss (P < 0.01) and the skin impedance (P < 0.001) between the inner and outer sides of the arms. Additionally, parallel factor analysis of the full skin impedance spectra also showed that there are systematic differences between right and left arm (P < 0.01). Conclusions: It is crucial to design skin studies carefully in order to minimise the effects of the local skin properties of human skin.

  • Hydrogenation of C-60 in Peapods: Physical Chemistry in Nano Vessels
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - WASHINGTON, DC 20036 : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 113:20, s. 8583-8587
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hydrogenation of C-60 molecules inside SWNT was achieved by direct reaction with hydrogen gas at elevated pressure and temperature. Evidence for the C-60 hydrogenation in peapods is provided by isotopic engineering with specific enrichment of encapsulated species and high resolution C-13 and H-1 NMR spectroscopy with the observation of characteristic diamagnetic and paramagnetic shifts of the NMR lines and the appearance of sp(3) carbon resonances. We estimate that approximately 78% of the C-60 molecules inside SWNTs are hydrogenated to an average degree of 14 hydrogen atoms per C-60 molecule. As a consequence, the rotational dynamics of the encapsulated C60Hx molecules is clearly hindered. Our successful hydrogenation experiments open completely new roads to understand and control confined chemical reactions at the nano scale

  • Molecular dynamics and phase transition in one-dimensional crystal of C60 encapsulated inside single wall carbon nanotubes
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: ACS Nano. - Washington, DC 20036 USA : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1936-0851 .- 1936-086X. ; 3:12, s. 3878-3883
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One-dimensional crystals of 25% 13C-enriched C60 encapsulated inside highly magnetically purified SWNTs were investigated by following the temperature dependence of the 13C NMR line shapes and the relaxation rates from 300 K down to 5 K. High-resolution MAS techniques reveal that 32% of the encapsulated molecules, so-called the C60α, are blocked at room temperature and 68%, labeled C60β, are shown to reversly undergo molecular reorientational dynamics. Contrary to previous NMR studies, spin−lattice relaxation time reveals a phase transition at 100 K associated with the changes in the nature of the C60β dynamics. Above the transition, the C60β exhibits continuous rotational diffusion; below the transition, C60β executes uniaxial hindered rotations most likely along the nanotubes axis and freeze out below 25 K. The associated activation energies of these two dynamical regimes are measured to be 6 times lower than in fcc-C60, suggesting a quiet smooth orientational dependence of the interaction between C60β molecules and the inner surface of the nanotubes.

  • Improved outcome after relapse in children with acute myeloid leukaemia.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: British journal of haematology. - : Wiley. - 0007-1048 .- 1365-2141. ; 136:2, s. 229-236
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the Nordic Society for Paediatric Haematology and Oncology paediatric study acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) 93, event-free survival was 50% and overall survival was 66%, indicating that many patients were cured following relapse. Factors influencing outcome in children with relapsed AML were investigated. The study included all 146 children in the Nordic countries diagnosed with AML between 1988 and 2003, who relapsed. Data on disease characteristics and relapse treatment were related to outcome. Sixty-six percentage achieved remission with survival after relapse (5 years) 34 +/- 4%. Of 122 patients who received re-induction therapy, 77% entered remission with 40 +/- 5% survival. Remission rates were similar for different re-induction regimens but fludarabine, cytarabine, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor-based therapy had low treatment-related mortality. Prognostic factors for survival were duration of first complete remission (CR1) and stem cell transplantation (SCT) in CR1. In early relapse (<1 year in CR1), survival was 21 +/- 5% compared with 48 +/- 6% in late relapse. For children receiving re-induction therapy, survival in early relapse was 29 +/- 6% and 51 +/- 6% in late. Patients treated in CR1 with SCT, autologous SCT or chemotherapy had a survival of 18 +/- 9, 5 +/- 5 and 41 +/- 5%, respectively. Survival was 62 +/- 6% in 64 children given SCT as part of their relapse therapy. A significant proportion of children with relapsed AML can be cured, even those with early relapse. Children who receive re-induction therapy, enter remission and proceed to SCT can achieve a cure rate of 60%.

  • An assessment of calibration and performance of the microdialysis system
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis. - : Elsevier. - 0731-7085 .- 1873-264X. ; 39:3-4, s. 730-734
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To improve the reliability of microdialysis measurements of tissue concentrations of metabolic substances, this study was designed to test both the performance and the internal validity of the microdialysis methods in the hands of our research group. The stability of the CMA 600 analyser was tested with a known glucose solution in 72 standard microvials and in 48 plastic vials. To evaluate if variation in sampling time makes any difference in sample concentration (recovery), sampling times of 10, 20 and 30 min were compared in vitro with a constant flow rate of 1 microl/min. For testing of sampling times at different flow rates, an in vitro study was performed in which a constant sample volume of 10 microl was obtained. With the no net flux method, the actual concentration of glucose and urea in subcutaneous tissue was measured. The CMA 600 glucose analysis function was accurate and stable with a coefficient of variability (CV) of 0.2-0.55%. There was no difference in recovery for the CMA 60 catheter for glucose when sampling times were varied. Higher flow rates resulted in decreased recovery. Subcutaneous tissue concentrations of glucose and urea were 4.4 mmol/l and 4.1 mmol/l, respectively. To conclude, this work describes an internal validation of our use of the microdialysis system by calibration of vials and catheters. Internal validation is necessary in order to be certain of adequate sampling times, flow rates and sampling volumes. With this in mind, the microdialysis technique is useful and appropriate for in vivo studies on tissue metabolism.

  • Optimised sample handling in association with use of the CMA 600 analyser
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis. - : Elsevier. - 0731-7085 .- 1873-264X. ; 48:5, s. 940-945
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A large degree of variability for batched analysis of serially collected microdialysis samples measured with the CMA 600 analyser has been described. This study was designed to identify sources of variability related to sample handling. Standard concentrations of four solutes were placed in microdialysis vials and then stored and analysed at intervals. Results were analysed for variability related to vial and cap type, duration and temperature of storage, centrifugation and re-analysis. The main results were that centrifugation of samples reduced variability. When a batch of 24 samples was analysed, the use of crimp caps reduced evaporation. Samples in glass vials with crimp caps could be stored in a refrigerator for up to 14 days without large variability in concentration compared to plastic vials which demonstrated variability already when stored for more than 1 day. We conclude that variability in microdialysis results can occur in relation to storage and analysis routines if routines are not optimised concerning evaporation. Centrifugation before analyses, glass vials with crimp caps even during frozen storage, and attention to minimal times for samples to be uncapped during analysis all contribute to minimise variability in the handling and analysis of microdialysis samples.

  • On the error of the Monte Carlo pricing method for Asian option
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Numerical and Applied Mathematics. - 0868-6912. ; 96:1, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider a Monte Carlo method to price a continuous arithmetic Asian option with a given precision. Piecewise constant approximation and plain simulation are used for a wide class of models based on L\'{e}vy processes. We give bounds of the possible discretization and simulation errors. The sufficient numbers of discretization points and simulations to obtain requested accuracy are derived. To demonstrate the general approach, the Black-Scholes model is studied in more detail. We undertake the case of continuous averaging and starting time zero,  but the obtained results can be applied to the discrete case  and generalized for any time before an execution date. Some numerical experiments and comparison to the PDE based method are also presented.
