  • Modeling of structural cables
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Modeling, Systems Engineering, and Project Management for Astronomy VIII. - : SPIE. - 9781510619630 ; 10705
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For many applications, including future giant telescopes, there is increased interest in structural cables. Usually integrated models, i.e. combined models of structures, optics and control systems are used for modeling of telescopes. Performance of structural cables is non-linear, so often a linearization is needed to include cable models in integrated models of telescopes. We present two different linear models describing static and dynamic performance of a cable near an equilibrium operating point. The models are lug-in» models that in a black box form give end point forces as outputs, with end point movements as inputs. Using an example, we compare the two models and we outline the benefits of each of the models. Although we here focus on modeling of telescopes, the techniques are useful also for other applications.

  • Neural networks for image-based wavefront sensing for astronomy
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Optics Letters. - : Optical Society of America. - 0146-9592 .- 1539-4794. ; 44:18, s. 4618-4621
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the possibility of using convolutional neural networks for wavefront sensing from a guide star image in astronomical telescopes. We generated a large number of artificial atmospheric wavefront screens and determined associated best-fit Zernike polynomials. We also generated in-focus and out-of-focus point-spread functions. We trained the well-known “Inception” network using the artificial data sets and found that although the accuracy does not permit diffraction-limited correction, the potential improvement in the residual phase error is promising for a telescope in the 2–4 m class.

  • Common Variants Within Oxidative Phosphorylation Genes Influence Risk of Ischemic Stroke and Intracerebral Hemorrhage
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Stroke: a journal of cerebral circulation. - 1524-4628. ; 44:3, s. 612-619
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and Purpose-Previous studies demonstrated association between mitochondrial DNA variants and ischemic stroke (IS). We investigated whether variants within a larger set of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) genes encoded by both autosomal and mitochondrial DNA were associated with risk of IS and, based on our results, extended our investigation to intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Methods-This association study used a discovery cohort of 1643 individuals, a validation cohort of 2432 individuals for IS, and an extension cohort of 1476 individuals for ICH. Gene-set enrichment analysis was performed on all structural OXPHOS genes, as well as genes contributing to individual respiratory complexes. Gene-sets passing gene-set enrichment analysis were tested by constructing genetic scores using common variants residing within each gene. Associations between each variant and IS that emerged in the discovery cohort were examined in validation and extension cohorts. Results-IS was associated with genetic risk scores in OXPHOS as a whole (odds ratio [OR], 1.17; P=0.008) and complex I (OR, 1.06; P=0.050). Among IS subtypes, small vessel stroke showed association with OXPHOS (OR, 1.16; P=0.007), complex I (OR, 1.13; P=0.027), and complex IV (OR, 1.14; P=0.018). To further explore this small vessel association, we extended our analysis to ICH, revealing association between deep hemispheric ICH and complex IV (OR, 1.08; P=0.008). Conclusions-This pathway analysis demonstrates association between common genetic variants within OXPHOS genes and stroke. The associations for small vessel stroke and deep ICH suggest that genetic variation in OXPHOS influences small vessel pathobiology. Further studies are needed to identify culprit genetic variants and assess their functional consequences. (Stroke. 2013;44:612-619.)

  • Genetic variants in CETP increase risk of intracerebral hemorrhage
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Annals of Neurology. - : Wiley. - 1531-8249 .- 0364-5134. ; 80:5, s. 730-740
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: In observational epidemiologic studies, higher plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) has been associated with increased risk of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). DNA sequence variants that decrease cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) gene activity increase plasma HDL-C; as such, medicines that inhibit CETP and raise HDL-C are in clinical development. Here, we test the hypothesis that CETP DNA sequence variants associated with higher HDL-C also increase risk for ICH.METHODS: We performed 2 candidate-gene analyses of CETP. First, we tested individual CETP variants in a discovery cohort of 1,149 ICH cases and 1,238 controls from 3 studies, followed by replication in 1,625 cases and 1,845 controls from 5 studies. Second, we constructed a genetic risk score comprised of 7 independent variants at the CETP locus and tested this score for association with HDL-C as well as ICH risk.RESULTS: Twelve variants within CETP demonstrated nominal association with ICH, with the strongest association at the rs173539 locus (odds ratio [OR] = 1.25, standard error [SE] = 0.06, p = 6.0 × 10(-4) ) with no heterogeneity across studies (I(2) = 0%). This association was replicated in patients of European ancestry (p = 0.03). A genetic score of CETP variants found to increase HDL-C by ∼2.85mg/dl in the Global Lipids Genetics Consortium was strongly associated with ICH risk (OR = 1.86, SE = 0.13, p = 1.39 × 10(-6) ).INTERPRETATION: Genetic variants in CETP associated with increased HDL-C raise the risk of ICH. Given ongoing therapeutic development in CETP inhibition and other HDL-raising strategies, further exploration of potential adverse cerebrovascular outcomes may be warranted. • Development of a Novel Global Surgery Course for Medical Schools
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Surgical Education. - : Elsevier BV. - 1931-7204. ; 76:2, s. 469-479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: We endeavored to create a comprehensive course in global surgery involving multinational exchange. Design: The course involved 2 weeks of didactics, 2 weeks of clinical rotations in a low-resource setting and 1 week for a capstone project. We evaluated our success through knowledge tests, surveys of the students, and surveys of our Zimbabwean hosts. Setting: The didactic portions were held in Sweden, and the clinical portion was primarily in Harare with hospitals affiliated with the University of Zimbabwe. Participants: Final year medical students from Lund University in Sweden, Harvard Medical School in the USA and the University of Zimbabwe all participated in didactics in Sweden. The Swedish and American students then traveled to Zimbabwe for clinical work. The Zimbabwean students remained in Sweden for a clinical experience. Results: The course has been taught for 3 consecutive years and is an established part of the curriculum at Lund University, with regular participation from Harvard Medical School and the University of Zimbabwe. Participants report significant improvements in their physical exam skills and their appreciation of the needs of underserved populations, as well as confidence with global surgical concepts. Our Zimbabwean hosts thought the visitors integrated well into the clinical teams, added value to their own students’ experience and believe that the exchange should continue despite the burden associated with hosting visiting students. Conclusions: Here we detail the development of a course in global surgery for medical students that integrates didactic as well as clinical experiences in a low-resource setting. The course includes a true multilateral exchange with students from Sweden, the United States and Zimbabwe participating regularly. We hope that this course might serve as a model for other medical schools looking to establish courses in this burgeoning field.

  • Do Competition Authorities Consider Business Relationships?
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business-to-Business Marketing. - : Taylor and Francis (Routledge). - 1051-712X .- 1547-0628. ; 19:1, s. 67-92
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Companies engage in business relationships for a variety of reasons, including specialization, product development, and building competitive networks. Research has demonstrated that mergers and acquisitions (Mandamp; As) may challenge ongoing business relationships. The purpose of this article is to investigate whether and how competition authorities consider business relationships when evaluating Mandamp; As. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanMethodology: The article uses the documentation from 450 Mandamp; As reported to the Swedish competition authority to capture the way in which an authority evaluates Mandamp; As. The Swedish competition authority evaluation corresponds to other national and international evaluation procedures. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanFindings: The findings indicate that the competition authorities neglect an important aspect of business life, namely companies forming business relationships. The competition authorities evaluate Mandamp; As on the basis of risk for price increases, and consequently disregard such issues as heterogeneity in demand and offerings, and values built into existing business relationships. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanOriginality/Value/Contribution: The article contributes to research on business relationships through exploring how a public authority deals with such relationships. It also contributes to research on mergers and acquisitions through examining how these activities are evaluated by competition authorities. Furthermore, the article contributes to competition research by reflecting on competition law concerning Mandamp;A regulations in relation to business relationships.

  • Analysis of Best High Rate Convolutional Codes for Faster than Nyquist Turbo Equalization
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 2014 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT). ; , s. 1987-1991
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We find good rate 2/3 and 3/4 convolutional codes for use with iterative decoding (turbo equalization) of coded intersymbol interference with AWGN. The method is based on the input-output bit error rate characteristic of the convolutional BCJR decoder module. An analysis leads to an equivalent minimum distance under the required intrinsic subtraction, which depends on free distance and an input-output LLR correlation parameter.
