  • Is bacterial vaginosis a sexually transmitted disease?
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: International journal of STD & AIDS. - : SAGE Publications. - 0956-4624 .- 1758-1052. ; 2:5, s. 362-4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sexual behaviour of 400 women with and 400 women without bacterial vaginosis from a health screening programme was investigated by a questionnaire to see if women with bacterial vaginosis had similar behaviours to women considered at risk for STDs. These patients were randomly selected from computer records. Eight hundred questionnaires were distributed and 641 women answered. The age of first sexual intercourse was lower among women with bacterial vaginosis (17.8 years) than those without (18.6 years; P less than 0.001). Number of lifetime sexual partners was higher among women with bacterial vaginosis (P less than 0.001). Women with bacterial vaginosis smoked or had smoked more often. These results indicate that women with bacterial vaginosis have similar sexual behaviour to those at risk for STDs.

  • Foveal scale-space and the linear increase of receptive field size as a function of eccentricity
  • 1994
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper addresses the formulation of a foveal scale-space and its relation to the scaling property of receptive field sizes with eccentricity. It is shown how the notion of a fovea can be incorporated into conventional scale-space theory leading to a foveal log-polar scale-space. Natural assumptions about uniform treatment of structures over scales and finite processing capacity imply a linear increase of minimum receptive field size as a function of eccentricity. These assumptions are similar to the ones used for deriving linear scale-space theory and the Gaussian receptive field model for an idealized visual front-end.

  • Expression of a dietary protein in E. coli renders it strongly antigenic to gut lymphoid tissue.
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Immunology. - 0019-2805. ; 73:4, s. 394-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bacteria that colonize the intestinal mucosa elicit a strong mucosal immune response, whereas food antigens such as ovalbumin are very weakly immunogenic to the gut-associated lymphoid tissue. This may either be due to special physico-chemical properties of bacterial substances versus proteins from animals and plants, or to stimulating properties of the bacteria on, e.g., antigen presentation, rendering all substances contained within bacteria antigenic. To test these hypotheses, ovalbumin was expressed in wild-type Escherichia coli and germ-free female rats were colonized with this strain. The systemic and mucosal antibody response of these rats was compared with that of rats given large amounts of dietary ovalbumin. Biliary IgA antibodies, which reflect the local IgA antibody production in the intestine, were only found in the rats colonized with ovalbumin-synthesizing E. coli. IgG antibodies in the bile were also only seen in these rats. We conclude that mucosal immunogenicity depends on the context in which a protein is presented to the gut-associated lymphoid tissue, rather than to special antigenic characteristics of the protein in itself.

  • Arterial rupture after microwave-induced hyperthermia and radiotherapy. With reference to two patients treated for recurrence in previously operated and irradiated areas
  • 1990
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Hyperthermia. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0265-6736 .- 1464-5157. ; 6:3, s. 499-509
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two patients who developed frank arterial bleeding after combined microwave-induced hyperthermia and radiotherapy are described. One patient received re-irradiation and hyperthermia for recurrent metastatic neck nodes of a mesopharyngeal carcinoma. Full course radiotherapy had been given 6 years previously and a right-sided radical neck node dissection had been performed 4 months earlier because of recurrent neck node metastases. Six weeks after the combined therapy for a second recurrence, which achieved complete remission, a fatal rupture of the carotid artery occurred. The other patient received re-irradiation and hyperthermia for a chest wall recurrence of a breast carcinoma, treated 5.5 years previously by sector resection and tangential beam radiotherapy, and treated again 2 years earlier with extensive surgery for a local recurrence. A frank arterial bleeding from the treated region was seen after 7 months, but could be arrested with surgery. This important complication in combined hyperthermia and radiotherapy does not seem to have been recognized before. Different explanations are discussed, such as the previous local treatment as well as high temperature and atherosclerosis per se.

  • Leisure and muscular performance in health and disease : a study of 40-64-year-old northern Swedes
  • 1985
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Categories and frequencies of leisureactivities employed by 156 randomly selected males and females aged 40-44, 50-54, 60-64 were investigated by structured interviews and were related to leisuresatisfaction, to experienced health and socio-economic status. In equal numbers (15) of males and females from each group and in 24 males (60 +_6 years) with intermittent claudication (Cl) isokinetic plantar flexion performance was investigated with registrations of peak torque (PT), contractional work (CW), active range-of-motion (RoM) and integrated electromyograms from all threee triceps surae heads. Subjects performed a few maximum plantarflexions at different velocities of angular motion and also up to 200 consecutive plantar flexions at 60 °/s. The males aged 40-44 were re -investigated after two years additionally using electromyographic power frequency analyses.Leisure choice was mainly age and sex independent and extensively included outdoor activities. Leisure satisfaction was positively associated with relative frequency of activities. Symptoms of bodily discomfort, in particular backpain, were quite common and apparently caused relatively low level of mutual leisure activities. Thus, with in this age span, leisure activities appear rather rigid but often successfully, adhered to . Common ailments influence partnership mutuality negatively.Plantar flexion PT and CW are adequately p re dicta ble by sex, age and crural circumference. Uniformly a 3:2 male/female ratio characterizes mechanical output and iEMG. The latter is velocity independent. Output decreases with increasing age. Hence the output/excitation balance (CW/iEMG) is age, but not sex, dependent. CI-patients produce less PT and CW than do controls. Independently of this disease, of age and sex, PT and CW describe parallel negative exponential functions of velocity.During repeated manoeuvres plantar flexion output and iEMG initially drop, there after to maintain nearly steady-state levels. Throughout up to 200 contractions CW/iEMG was unaltered in the clinically healthy. Test/re-test with two years interval yielded nearly identical results. Leftshifts in mean power frequency in parallel with output-drop imply that the latter probably is due to FT-motor unit fatigue. For CW, but not for PT, the drop became slower and the (relative) steady-state level higher with increasing age, indicating significant increase in endurance with age. In the Cl-patients, output, but not excitation, decreased after a few repititions. Therefore, CW/iEMG fell dramatically, implying intramuscular fatigue. Taken together with findings of close associations between total cumulated work and measured/expected maximum walking tole rance it is suggested that measurements of CW and calculations of CW/iEMG are of clinical value.
