  • Emotional Dysregulation and Trauma Symptoms Mediate the Relationship Between Childhood Abuse and Nonsuicidal Self-Injury in Adolescents
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Psychiatry. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-0640. ; 13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundNonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is common in adolescents. Emotion dysregulation has been identified as a core mechanism in the development and maintenance of NSSI and it is therefore an important target when addressing NSSI. The pathogenic connection between different kinds of childhood abuse, difficulties in emotion regulation and NSSI needs further investigation. The objective of this study was to examine whether difficulties with emotion regulation and trauma symptoms, separately and together, mediate the relationships between sexual, physical and emotional abuse and NSSI. MethodCross-sectional data was collected from 3,169 adolescent high-school students aged 16-19 years (M = 18.12, SD = 0.45). Data from self-reported experiences of childhood abuse, current difficulties with emotion regulation (measured with the Difficulties with Emotion Regulation Scale, DERS-16) and trauma symptoms (measured with the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children, TSCC), and NSSI were collected. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to test the proposed relationships between variables. ResultsThe prevalence of life-time NSSI was 27.4%. Prevalence of reported childhood abuse was 9.2, 17.5, and 18.0% for sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, respectively. Childhood abuse, difficulties with emotion regulation and trauma symptoms exhibited significant positive associations with NSSI in adolescents. Emotional dysregulation and trauma symptoms were both found to mediate the relationship between childhood abuse and NSSI. Latent variable models were found to fit data well. ConclusionResults indicate that increased levels of emotional dysregulation and trauma symptoms in relation to childhood abuse contribute to the increased risk of NSSI. Further, results point to some aspects of emotional dysregulation and trauma symptoms being more important in this regard. Clinical implications are discussed.

  • Communication, self-esteem and prolonged grief in parent-adolescent dyads, 1-4 years following the death of a parent to cancer
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Oncology Nursing. - : Elsevier BV. - 1462-3889 .- 1532-2122. ; 50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: Talking and grieving together may be advantageous for maintaining belief in a meaningful future and can help bereaved adolescents and their parents to cope better with the situation. The aim of this study was to explore communication, self-esteem and prolonged grief in adolescent-parent dyads, following the death of a parent to cancer.METHOD: This study has a descriptive and comparative design. Twenty family dyads consisting of parentally bereaved adolescents (12-19 years) and their widowed parents completed the Parent and Adolescent Communication Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and Prolonged Grief-13, 1-4 years following the death of a parent.RESULTS: Twelve family dyads reported normal-high parent-adolescent communication, 11 dyads rated normal-high self-esteem. Two adolescents and three parents scored above the cut-off for possible prolonged grief disorder (≥35), none of these were in the same dyads. There was a difference (p < .05) between boys (mean 40.0) and girls (mean 41.9) with regard to open family communication, as assessed by parents. Girls reported lower self-esteem (mean 26.0) than boys (mean 34.1, p < .01).CONCLUSIONS: This study provides insights from parentally bereaved families which indicate that despite experiencing the often-traumatic life event of losing a parent or partner, most participants reported normal parent-adolescent communication, normal self-esteem and few symptoms of prolonged grief. The potential usefulness of identifying families who may need professional support in family communication following the death of a parent is discussed.

  • Swedish translation and validation of the Pediatric Insomnia Severity Index
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: BMC Pediatrics. - : BioMed Central. - 1471-2431 .- 1471-2431. ; 20:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: To increase health and well-being in young children, it is important to acknowledge and promote the child's sleep behaviour. However, there is a lack of brief, validated sleep screening instruments for children. The aims of the study were to (1) present a Swedish translation of the PISI, (2) examine the factor structure of the Swedish version of PISI, and test the reliability and validity of the PISI factor structure in a sample of healthy children in Sweden. Methods: The English version of the PISI was translated into Swedish, translated back into English, and agreed upon before use. Parents of healthy 3- to 10-year-old children filled out the Swedish version of the PISI and the generic health-related quality of life instrument KIDSCREEN-27 two times. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses for baseline and test-retest, structural equation modelling, and correlations between the PISI and KIDSCREEN-27 were performed. Results: In total, 160 parents filled out baseline questionnaires (test), whereof 100 parents (63%) filled out the follow-up questionnaires (retest). Confirmative factor analysis of the PISI found two correlated factors: sleep onset problems (SOP) and sleep maintenance problems (SMP). The PISI had substantial construct and test-retest reliability. The PISI factors were related to all KIDSCREEN-27 dimensions. Conclusions: The Swedish version of the PISI is applicable for screening sleep problems and is a useful aid in dialogues with families about sleep.

  • Democratic Muslims, Deceptive Islamists : The Portrayal of Swedish Muslims and Muslim organization by the Agency for Psychological Defense 2017-2022
  • 2023
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The term "Islamist" and the way it is used has gained a decisive importance for the discourse on Muslims and Muslim organization in Sweden. This paper is an analysis of how the term “Islamist” is used in six official texts from the department of Psycological Defense at the Swedish Authority for Civil Contingencies (from 2022 the Authority for Psycological Defense). Here, we examine the concept of Islamism through a critical discourse analysis based on a previously performed thematic analysis of six texts produced within the departments knowledge project on Islamist information influence in Sweden, 2017-2022. We show that the term "Islamist" is used fluidly in the examined texts. A precisely defined, anti-democratic and dangerous ideology of “Islamic hooliganism” is defined as entirely distinguished from “ordinary Muslims”, and yet applied to very broad swathes of the population, including people with a Muslim identity, or people who are motivated by their Muslim faith to perform charity work.We have found that, as a result of a plastic and rhetorically malleable conceptual definition, the examined texts have formulated a larger narrative about Islamism in Sweden as virtually synonymous with Muslim organization in general. Islamism is depicted as something foreign, as well as physically, socially, and ideologically threatening, incompatible with democracy and therefore something that needs to be monitored and defunded. The term Islamism thus becomes a tool to defund Muslim organizations and deplatforming Muslim individuals from the public sphere.

  • En karta över det demokratiska utrymmet
  • 2021

  • Challenging conceptualisations of work : Revisiting contemporary experiences of return to work and unemployment
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Occupational Science. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1442-7591 .- 2158-1576. ; 28:1, s. 81-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article draws on empirically derived illustrations of return to work and unemployment to critically explore how a narrow understanding of work pervades contemporary social policies and programmes. This is particularly relevant in economic and labour market transitions aligned with neoliberalism that individualise the social problem of unemployment and thus restrict occupational possibilities related to work. An overview of how work and related concepts have been conceptualised in occupational science scholarship is presented. After describing the theoretical orientation of the paper, three illustrations derived from a secondary analysis of data from projects conducted in Sweden and the United States are presented. The three empirically grounded illustrations are integrated with theory to highlight tensions between the politically informed structures that shape social policies and programmes and the individual experiences of work, unemployment, and return to work that users and providers of these programmes communicate. By asserting that success in work-related placement programmes is not synonymous with meaningful employment, we attempt to heighten awareness of the potential risks associated with a reliance on measuring work by merely being in paid formal employment.

  • Samverkan inom socialtjänsten kring våld i nära relationer : Erfarenheter, utmaningar och möjligheter
  • 2022
