  • Measurements of Higher Order Flow Harmonics in Au plus Au Collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 107:25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Flow coefficients nu(n) for n = 2, 3, 4, characterizing the anisotropic collective flow in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV, are measured relative to event planes Psi(n), determined at large rapidity. We report nu(n) as a function of transverse momentum and collision centrality, and study the correlations among the event planes of different order n. The nu(n) are well described by hydrodynamic models which employ a Glauber Monte Carlo initial state geometry with fluctuations, providing additional constraining power on the interplay between initial conditions and the effects of viscosity as the system evolves. This new constraint can serve to improve the precision of the extracted shear viscosity to entropy density ratio eta/s.

  • Neutral pion production with respect to centrality and reaction plane in Au plus Au collisions at root S-NN=200 GeV
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 87:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The PHENIX experiment has measured the production of pi(0)s in Au + Au collisions at root S-NN = 200 GeV. The new data offer a fourfold increase in recorded luminosity, providing higher precision and a larger reach in transverse momentum, p(T), to 20 GeV/c. The production ratio of eta/pi(0) is 0.46 +/- 0.01(stat) +/- 0.05(syst), constant with p(T) and collision centrality. The observed ratio is consistent with earlier measurements, as well as with the p + p and d + Au values. pi(0) are suppressed by a factor of 5, as in earlier findings. However, with the improved statistical precision a small but significant rise of the nuclear modification factor R-AA vs p(T), with a slope of 0.0106 +/-(0.0034)(0.0029) (Gev/c)(-1), is discernible in central collisions. A phenomenological extraction of the average fractional parton energy loss shows a decrease with increasing p(T). To study the path-length dependence of suppression, the pi(0) yield is measured at different angles with respect to the event plane; a strong azimuthal dependence of the pi(0) R-AA is observed. The data are compared to theoretical models of parton energy loss as a function of the path length L in the medium. Models based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics are insufficient to describe the data, while a hybrid model utilizing pQCD for the hard interactions and anti-de-Sitter space/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) for the soft interactions is consistent with the data. • Observation of Direct-Photon Collective Flow in Au plus Au Collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 109:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The second Fourier component v(2) of the azimuthal anisotropy with respect to the reaction plane is measured for direct photons at midrapidity and transverse momentum (p(T)) of 1-12 GeV/c in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. Previous measurements of this quantity for hadrons with p(T) < 6 GeV/c indicate that the medium behaves like a nearly perfect fluid, while for p(T) > 6 GeV/c a reduced anisotropy is interpreted in terms of a path-length dependence for parton energy loss. In this measurement with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider we find that for p(T) > 4 GeV/c the anisotropy for direct photons is consistent with zero, which is as expected if the dominant source of direct photons is initial hard scattering. However, in the p(T) < 4 GeV/c region dominated by thermal photons, we find a substantial direct-photon v(2) comparable to that of hadrons, whereas model calculations for thermal photons in this kinematic region underpredict the observed v(2).

  • Cross sections and double-helicity asymmetries of midrapidity inclusive charged hadrons in p plus p collisions at root s = 62.4 GeV
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D (Particles, Fields, Gravitation and Cosmology). - 1550-2368. ; 86:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Unpolarized cross sections and double-helicity asymmetries of single-inclusive positive and negative charged hadrons at midrapidity from p + p collisions at root s = 62.4 GeV are presented. The PHENIX measurement of the cross sections for 1.0 < p(T) < 4.5 GeV/c are consistent with perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-leading order in the strong-coupling constant, alpha(s). Resummed pQCD calculations including terms with next-to-leading-log accuracy, yielding reduced theoretical uncertainties, also agree with the data. The double-helicity asymmetry, sensitive at leading order to the gluon polarization in a momentum-fraction range of 0.05 less than or similar to x(gluon) less than or similar to 0.2, is consistent with recent global parametrizations disfavoring large gluon polarization.

  • Direct photon production in p plus p collisions at root s=200 GeV at midrapidity
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D (Particles, Fields, Gravitation and Cosmology). - 1550-2368. ; 86:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The differential cross section for the production of direct photons in p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV at midrapidity was measured in the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Inclusive direct photons were measured in the transverse momentum range from 5: 5-25 GeV/c, extending the range beyond previous measurements. Event structure was studied with an isolation criterion. Next-to-leading-order perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics calculations give a good description of the spectrum. When the cross section is expressed versus x(T), the PHENIX data are seen to be in agreement with measurements from other experiments at different center-of-mass energies.

  • Inclusive cross section and single transverse spin asymmetry for very forward neutron production in polarized p plus p collisions at root s=200 GeV
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D (Particles, Fields, Gravitation and Cosmology). - 1550-2368. ; 88:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The energy dependence of the single-transverse-spin asymmetry, A(N), and the cross section for neutron production at very forward angles were measured in the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider for polarized p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV. The neutrons were observed in forward detectors covering an angular range of up to 2.2 mrad. We report results for neutrons with a momentum fraction of x(F) = 0.45 to 1.0. The energy dependence of the measured cross sections were consistent with x(F) scaling, compared to measurements by an experiment at the Intersecting Storage Ring, which measured neutron production in unpolarized p + p collisions at root s = 30.6-62.7 GeV. The cross sections for large x(F) neutron production for p + p collisions, as well as those in e + p collisions measured at the Hadron-Electron Ring Accelerator, are described by a pion exchange mechanism. The observed forward neutron asymmetries were large, reaching A(N) = -0.08 +/- 0.02 for x(F) = 0.8; the measured backward asymmetries, for negative x(F), were consistent with zero. The observed asymmetry for forward neutron production is discussed within the pion exchange framework, with interference between the spin-flip amplitude due to the pion exchange and nonflip amplitudes from all Reggeon exchanges. Within the pion exchange description, the measured neutron asymmetry is sensitive to the contribution of other Reggeon exchanges even for small amplitudes.

  • Transverse momentum dependence of J/psi polarization at midrapidity in p plus p collisions at root s=200 GeV
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D (Particles, Fields, Gravitation and Cosmology). - 1550-2368. ; 82:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the measurement of the transverse momentum dependence of inclusive J/psi polarization in p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV performed by the PHENIX Experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The J/psi polarization is studied in the helicity, Gottfried-Jackson, and Collins-Soper frames for p(T) < 5 GeV/c and vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.35. The polarization in the helicity and Gottfried-Jackson frames is consistent with zero for all transverse momenta, with a slight (1.8 sigma) trend towards longitudinal polarization for transverse momenta above 2 GeV/c. No conclusion is allowed due to the limited acceptance in the Collins-Soper frame and the uncertainties of the current data. The results are compared to observations for other collision systems and center of mass energies and to different quarkonia production models.

  • Impaired splicing of fibronectin is associated with thoracic aortic aneurysm formation in patients with bicuspid aortic valve
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology. - : Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health). - 1079-5642 .- 1524-4636. ; 31:3, s. 691-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: Thoracic aortic aneurysm is a common complication in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). Alternatively spliced extra domain A (EDA) of fibronectin (FN) has an essential role in tissue repair. Here we analyze the expression of FN spliceforms in dilated and nondilated ascending aorta of tricuspid aortic valve (TAV) and BAV patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: The mRNA expression was analyzed in the ascending aorta by Affymetrix Exon arrays in patients with TAV (n=40) and BAV (n=69). EDA and extra domain B (EDB) expression was increased in dilated aorta from TAV patients compared with nondilated aorta (P<0.001 and P<0.05, respectively). In contrast, EDA expression was not increased in dilated aorta from BAV patients (P=0.25), whereas EDB expression was upregulated (P<0.01). The expression of EDA correlated with maximum aortic diameter in TAV (rho=0.58) but not in BAV (rho=0.15) patients. Protein analyses of EDA-FN showed concordant results. Transforming growth factor-beta treatment influenced the splicing of FN and enhanced the formation of EDA-containing FN in cultured medial cells from TAV patients but not in cells derived from BAV patients. Gene set enrichment analysis together with multivariate and univariate data analyses of mRNA expression suggested that differences in the transforming growth factor-beta signaling pathway may explain the impaired EDA inclusion in BAV patients. CONCLUSIONS: Decreased EDA expression may contribute to increased aneurysm susceptibility of BAV patients.

  • Real-time imaging required for optimal echocardiographic assessment of aortic valve calcification
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Clinical Physiology and Functional Imaging. - 1475-0961 .- 1475-097X. ; 32:6, s. 470-475
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction Aortic valve calcification (AVC), even without haemodynamic significance, may be prognostically import as an expression of generalized atherosclerosis, but techniques for echocardiographic assessment are essentially unexplored. Methods Two-dimensional (2D) echocardiographic recordings (Philips IE33) of the aortic valve in short-axis and long-axis views were performed in 185 consecutive patients within 1 week before surgery for aortic stenosis (n = 109, AS), aortic regurgitation (n = 61, AR), their combination (n = 8) or dilation of the ascending aorta (n = 7). The grey scale mean (GSMn) of the aortic valve in an end-diastolic short-axis still frame was measured. The same frame was scored visually 15 as indicating that the aortic valve was normal, thick, or had mild, moderate or severe calcification. The visual echodensity of each leaflet was determined real time applying the same 5-grade scoring system for each leaflet, and the average for the whole valve was calculated. Finally, a similar calcification score for the whole valve based on inspection and palpation by the surgeon was noted. Results Visual assessment of real-time images using the proposed scoring system showed better correlation with the surgical evaluation of the degree of valve calcification (r = 0.83, P<0.001) compared to evaluation of stop frames by visual assessment (r = 0.66, P<0.001) or the GSMn score (r = 0.64, P<0.001). High inter- and intra-observer correlations were observed for real-time visual score (both intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.93). Conclusion Real-time evaluation of the level of AVC is superior to using stop frames assessed either visually or by dedicated computer grey scale measurement software.
