  • Factors associated with snuffing habits among ice-hockey-playing boys
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Swedish Dental Journal. - : Swedish Dental Journal. ; 25:4, s. 145-154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present investigation was to study differences in background factors between ice-hockey-playing boys who used snuff, who had tried using snuff, and who had never used snuff. The background factors studied were the socio-economic conditions of the boys' parents; the tobacco habits of the boys' parents, siblings, and friends; the boys' choice of theoretical or practical upper secondary school programme; knowledge of the harmful effects of tobacco as well as participation in a sport other than ice hockey. Data were collected usinG a questionnaire. Of 249 boys in the age group 12-19 years who participated in the study, 13% used snuff, 34% had tried using snuff, and 53% had never used snuff. The factors knowledge of the harmful effects of tobacco and choice of theoretical or practical upper secondary school programme had no significant association with the boys' snuffing habits. This was also true for the parents' tobacco habits unless their habits were analysed separate from each other, where "mother smoked" showed an association with boys who used snuff. The study also showed a significant difference between boys who used snuff and boys who had never used snuff and between boys who had tried using snuff and boys who had never used snuff; boys who used snuff tended to have siblings who used snuff. Of boys who used snuff, 77% reported that their friends' use of snuff had influenced them to start using snuff. A significant difference could also be shown between boys who used snuff, had tried using snuff and never-users depending on whether the boys participated in a sport other than ice hockey. Snuff usage was not as widespread among boys who participated in other sport activities. This was verified by the multivariate logistic regression analysis where "taking part in other sports than ice hockey" was the explanatory variable that showed the strongest association with the dependent variable. An active participation in ice hockey and the environment, in which this sport is practised, would consequently be a strong influencing factor to start using snuff.

  • Knowledge and habits of tobacco among ice-hockey-playing boy : An intervention study
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Swedish Dental Journal. ; 24:1-2, s. 59-70
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to investigate tobacco habits among ice-hockey-playing boys in three clubs in the County of Värmland, Sweden and to analyse whether health information about the harmful effects of tobacco could change the players' tobacco habits. In addition, the issue of whether there is any correlation between knowledge of tobacco and its harmful effects with tobacco habits was studied. Ice-hockey-players from three ice-hockey clubs were represented and one of the clubs acted as a control group. A total of 252 male ice-hockey-players, 12-19 years old participated. A specially designed questionnaire containing 33 questions on background, socioeconomics, behaviour, and knowledge was used. The boys answered the questionnaire on three occasions. The first and second examinations took place on the same occasion with the intervention occurring between the examinations. The third examination was carried out after 3-5 weeks. The study showed that the use of snuff played a more important role among the ice-hockey-players than did smoking and that they had tried using snuff at the age of 12. The baseline investigation showed that there were no significant differences between the clubs in tobacco habits and knowledge of the harmful effects of tobacco. After the health information, the boys' knowledge of tobacco and its harmful effects increased significantly (p<0.001), but regardless, no change in their use of tobacco was found after 3-5 weeks. Knowledge also increased significantly among the boys in the control group (p<0.001), but no change in the use of tobacco was found here either. No significant difference could be demonstrated between the group of boys who used snuff and the non-users with regard to their knowledge of the harmful effects of tobacco.

  • A 15-year series analysis of caries development related to a socioeconomic variable. A study of the year group leaving the organised dental care in Göteborg, Sweden.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Swedish dental journal. - 0347-9994. ; 27:3, s. 151-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a long-term series analysis the study had the aim of detecting how the used socioeconomic variables were related to the caries status development in the year group leaving the organised dental care. The study included caries epidemiological records of individuals at the Public Dental Service of Göteborg, leaving the organised dental care during 1986-2000. The City of Göteborg was divided into four districts. One incidence and one prevalence caries index was used, each presented in two subgroups: individuals with no caries record and patients with 20% of the highest index values. The socio-economical variable was individuals 18-64 years of age, seeking employment, as a percentage of the corresponding group of all inhabitants. The registered values were divided into three time sections of five years each. In the first, the socio-economic value curves were almost horizontal, in the second they showed a considerable increasing and in the third a declining tendency. The result curves for the caries-free patient groups and for patients with 20% of the highest caries index values compared to the three socioeconomical time sector results, showed an almost horizontal level concerning the incidence index values, and for the prevalence index values an inclined curve structure to the incidence curves. The result curves for the incidence index with respect to the caries-free patient group showed an almost horizontal structure, while the prevalence curves inclined towards the incidence curves during the study period. The linear structure of these curves deviated considerably from the result curves for the socio-economic time series. No correlation existed between the socio-economic data and the studied caries index values. The need for determining the time length concerning caries index observations was discussed. It must be of special interest to maintain the dental health of the studied patient group and the individuals' relation to regular dental care, when as adults they meet the dental care economy.

  • Analysis of caries status development in relation to socio-economic variables using a case-based system.
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Swedish dental journal. - 0347-9994. ; 25:2, s. 81-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to detect, using case-based reasoning (CBR) induction methods in time series analysis, how measurable socio-economical adjustments were related to the caries status development. The study concerned the year classes leaving the organised dental care for the time period 1987-95, and had received dental care at the Public Dental Service of Göteborg. The results, as presented by a caries incidence index, indicated that at least one socioeconomical factor, individuals seeking employment, was of importance for the caries status development, a factor with an increase of considerable proportions since 1990. The findings indicated that the other socio-economic variables used did not have the same importance for the caries status development. One feasible explanation is that these factors reflect more upon the social family situation than the economical. If the caries status reflects the social situation of the individual more than the economical, this argument will elucidate the reasoning. Using CBR for the analysis of relationships between oral disease and parameters possibly influencing health development has proven to be a valuable tool and complement to more traditional statistical methods. The analysis can make relationships explicit through the hierarchic knowledge trees and also show redundant information, attributes not appearing in the trees.

  • Temporomandibular disorders in children and adolescents : A survey of dentists' attitudes, routine and experience
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Swedish Dental Journal. - 0347-9994. ; 25:3, s. 119-127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to survey the experience and routine of, attitudes toward, and need for specialist resources in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in children and adolescents among public dentists. A questionnaire study was conducted in three counties in Sweden: Ostergotland, Vastmanland, and Goteborg. The questionnaire was sent to 286 Public Dental Service dentists. It contained questions on demographic issues, quality assurance, clinical experience and expertise, attitudes, and the need for specialist resources. Eighty-seven per cent (250) of the dentists answered the questionnaire. The dentists in the three areas reported good routine and safety in occlusal splint treatments (74%-81%), occlusal equilibration (28%-55%), jaw exercise (25%-29%), and medication treatments (3%-55%). Good experience concerning diagnostics and therapy decision was reported by 25%-50% of the dentists. A significantly greater portion of the dentists in Vastmanland had attended courses in TMD compared with the two other counties (p=0.001). Registrations of quality variables such as verbal and/or written case histories with questions on facial pain and tension-type headache (1%-39%) and measurements of jaw openings were performed less frequently in the three counties (0%-5%). Fifty-five per cent of the dentists had a positive attitude toward the care of children and adolescents with TMD. A large need for specialist resources with the possibility to send referrals or to consult was reported by 98%-100% of the respondents, to participate in continuing education by 97%-98%, and to do auscultation by 61%-82%. In conclusion, many of the dentists lacked routines for making diagnoses, deciding therapy, and judging treatment results. Good routines were reported only in occlusal splint therapy. The majority of the dentists had a positive attitude toward the care of children and adolescents with TMD-related symptoms. The majority of the dentists reported a great need for TMD specialists.
