  • Theory of laser-induced ultrafast superdiffusive spin transport in layered heterostructures
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 86:2, s. 024404-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Femtosecond laser excitation of a ferromagnetic material creates energetic spin-polarized electrons that have anomalous transport characteristics. We develop a semiclassical theory that is specifically dedicated to capture the transport of laser-excited nonequilibrium (NEQ) electrons. The randomly occurring multiple electronic collisions, which give rise to electron thermalization, are treated exactly and we include the generation of electron cascades due to inelastic electron-electron scatterings. The developed theory can, moreover, treat the presence of several different layers in the laser-irradiated material. The derived spin-dependent transport equation is solved numerically and it is shown that the hot NEQ electron spin transport occurs neither in the diffusive nor ballistic regime, it is superdiffusive. As the excited spin majority and minority electrons in typical transition-metal ferromagnets (e.g., Fe, Ni) have distinct, energy-dependent lifetimes, fast spin dynamics in the femtosecond (fs) regime is generated, causing effectively a spin current. As examples, we solve the resulting spin dynamics numerically for typical heterostructures, specifically, a ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic metallic layered junction (i.e., Fe/Al and Ni/Al) and a ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic insulator junction (Fe or Ni layer on a large band-gap insulator as, e.g., MgO). For the ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic metallic junction where the ferromagnetic layer is laser-excited, the computed spin dynamics shows that injection of a superdiffusive spin current in the nonmagnetic layer (Al) is achieved. The injected spin current consists of screened NEQ, mobile majority-spin electrons and is nearly 90% spin-polarized for Ni and about 65% for Fe. Concomitantly, a fast demagnetization of the ferromagnetic polarization in the femtosecond regime is driven. The analogy of the generated spin current to a superdiffusive spin Seebeck effect is surveyed.

  • Proposal for nonlocal electron-hole turnstile in the quantum Hall regime
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics). - 1098-0121. ; 83:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a theory for a mesoscopic turnstile that produces spatially separated streams of electrons and holes along edge states in the quantum Hall regime. For a broad range of frequencies in the nonadiabatic regime the turnstile operation is found to be ideal, producing one electron and one hole per cycle. The accuracy of the turnstile operation is characterized by the fluctuations of the transferred charge per cycle. The fluctuations are found to be negligibly small in the ideal regime.

  • Spectral distribution and wave function of electrons emitted from a single-particle source in the quantum Hall regime
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics). - 1098-0121. ; 85:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate theoretically a scheme for spectroscopy of electrons emitted by an on-demand single-particle source. The total system, with an electron turnstile source and a single-level quantum dot spectrometer, is implemented with edge states in a conductor in the quantum Hall regime. Employing a Floquet scattering approach, the source and the spectrometer are analyzed within a single theoretical framework. The nonequilibrium distribution of the emitted electrons is analyzed via the direct current at the dot spectrometer. In the adiabatic and intermediate source frequency regimes, the distribution is found to be strongly peaked around the active resonant level of the turnstile. At high frequencies the distribution is split up into a set of fringes, resulting from the interplay of resonant transport through the turnstile and absorption or emission of individual Floquet quanta. For ideal source operation, with exactly one electron emitted per cycle, an expression for the single-electron wave function is derived.

  • Transport in very dilute solutions of He-3 in superfluid He-4
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 88:1, s. 014512-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Motivated by a proposed experimental search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM) utilizing neutron-He-3 capture in a dilute solution of He-3 in superfluid He-4, we derive the transport properties of dilute solutions in the regime where the He-3 are classically distributed and rapid He-3-He-3 scatterings keep the He-3 in equilibrium. Our microscopic framework takes into account phonon-phonon, phonon-He-3, and He-3-He-3 scatterings. We then apply these calculations to measurements by Rosenbaum et al. [J. Low Temp. Phys. 16, 131 (1974)] and by Lamoreaux et al. [Europhys. Lett. 58, 718 (2002)] of dilute solutions in the presence of a heat flow. We find satisfactory agreement of theory with the data, serving to confirm our understanding of the microscopics of the helium in the future nEDM experiment.

  • Ferromagnetism in the one-dimensional Kondo lattice: Mean-field approach via Majorana fermion canonical transformation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121. ; 89:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a canonical transformation, it is possible to faithfully represent the Kondo lattice model in terms of Majorana fermions. Studying this representation, we discovered an exact mapping between the Kondo lattice Hamiltonian and a Hamiltonian describing three spinless fermions interacting on a lattice. This alternative form of the Hamiltonian is suitable for an immediate identification of the competing effects that operate in the Kondo lattice model. In particular, a term describing the double-exchange mechanism appears explicitly in the Hamiltonian. We investigate the effectiveness of this three-fermion representation by performing a zero-temperature mean-field study of the phase diagram at different couplings and fillings for the one-dimensional case, focusing on the appearance of ferromagnetism. The solutions show interesting features that agree in many respects with the known numerical and analytical results. In particular, in the ferromagnetic region connected to the solution at zero electron density, we have a quantitative agreement on the value of the “commensurability parameter” discovered in recent density matrix renormalization group (in one dimension) and dynamical mean-field theory (in infinite dimensions) simulations; furthermore, we provide a theoretical justification for it, identifying a symmetry of the Hamiltonian. This ferromagnetic phase is stabilized by the emergence of a spin-selective Kondo insulator, which is described quite conveniently by the three spinless fermions. We discover, however, that such a phase cannot be the correct description for all the ferromagnetic phases of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model. We found in fact a different ferromagnetic phase at high filling and low couplings. This phase resembles the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) ferromagnetic phase existing at vanishing filling, but it incorporates much more of the Kondo effect, making it energetically more favorable than the typical spiral (spin ordered) mean-field ground states. We believe that this second phase represents a prototype for the strange ferromagnetic tongue identified by numerical simulations inside the paramagnetic dome. At the end of the work, we also provide a discussion of possible orders different from the ferromagnetic one. In particular, at half-filling, where we obtain as ground state at high coupling the correct Kondo insulating state.

  • Absence of half-metallicity in defect-free digital magnetic heterostructures delta-doped with Cr and Mn
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 83:12, s. 125107-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the results of combined density functional and many-body calculations of the electronic and magnetic properties of the defect-free digital ferromagnetic heterostructures obtained by doping GaAs with Cr and Mn. While the local-density approximation +U predicts half-metallicity in these defect-free delta-doped heterostructures, we demonstrate that local many-body correlations captured by dynamical mean-field theory induce within the minority-spin channel nonquasiparticle states just above E-F. As a consequence of the existence of these many-body states the half-metallic gap is closed and the carriers' spin polarization is significantly reduced. Below the Fermi level the minority-spin highest valence states are found to localize more on the GaAs layers, being independent of the type of electronic correlations considered. Thus, our results confirm the confinement of carriers in these delta-doped heterostructures, having a spin polarization that follows a different temperature dependence than the magnetization. We suggest that polarized hot-electron photoluminescence experiments might uncover evidence for the existence of many-body states within the minority-spin channel and elucidate their finite-temperature behavior.

  • High-pressure melting curve of platinum from ab initio Z method
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 85:17, s. 174104-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pt is widely used as a standard in high-pressure high-temperature experiments. The available experimental and theoretical data on Pt thermal stability is not consistent. We address the issue of high-pressure Pt melting by ab initio molecular dynamics. We demonstrate a remarkable consistency of our computed melting curve with the experimental data by N. R. Mitra, D. L. Decker, and H. B. Vanfleet [Phys. Rev. 161, 613 (1967)]. The extrapolation of their data, based on the Simon equation, nearly coincides with our ab initio computed melting curve. We propose the Pt melting curve in the form P-m(kbar) = 443.0[(T/T-m)(1.14) - 1].

  • MgO phase diagram from first principles in a wide pressure-temperature range
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 81:5, s. 054110-1-054110-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent laser-initiated strong shockwave measurements at Livermore provide the opportunity for verification of the MgO phase diagram at extreme pressures and temperatures. This calls for a comprehensive study of the MgO phase diagram. The phase diagram is obtained by ab initio molecular dynamics (two phase and Z method) and phonon-based thermodynamic calculations. Energies and forces are computed from first principles projector augmented wave method. The B1 transforms to B2 phase at about 490 GPa. Melting temperatures of B1 are consistent with the two-phase melting curve (Alfe, 2005). The triple point B1-B2-liquid is located at about 2.4 Mbar and 9000 K. The melting curve of the B2 phase rises rather steeply from the triple point. The Hugoniot is likely to cross the B1-B2 boundary first and then to cross the melting curve of B2, therefore, the melting curve of periclase is not relevant for the Hugoniot. MgO melts between 11.3 and 12.5 thousand K and 4.3 and 5 Mbar along the Hugoniot from the B2 phase. The two-phase melting curves of B1 computed with various semiempirical potentials are remarkably close to each other and are consistent with the B1 first principles melting curve at low pressure. This suggests the MgO melting temperatures to be in the close proximity of this determination. The search for new phases of MgO by first principles metadynamics has not produced unknown phases. Therefore, the suggested discontinuity of the Hugoniot at 170 GPa and 3000 K remains enigmatic.

  • Stability of the bcc phase of 4He close to the melting curve : A molecular dynamics study
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 85:1, s. 012503-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have investigated whether the Aziz et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 70, 4330 (1979)] model for (4)He renders the body-centered cubic phase more stable than the face-centered cubic phase in the proximity of the melting curve. Using molecular dynamics, we have simulated these solid phases in equilibrium with the liquid at a number of densities. In contrast to previous free energy molecular dynamics calculations, the model stabilizes the body-centered cubic phase. The stability field is just 5 degrees. wide below the melting curve at pressures around 140 Kbar and about 70 degrees wide at pressures around 750 Kbar. Considering that the body-centered cubic phase is dynamically unstable at low temperature, this result bears striking similarities to transition metal phase diagrams.

  • Magnetophotonic intensity effects in hybrid metal-dielectric structures
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 89:4, s. 045118-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The magneto-optical properties of a hybrid metal-dielectric structure consisting of a one-dimensional gold grating on top of a magnetic waveguide layer are studied experimentally and theoretically. It is demonstrated that a magnetic field applied in the longitudinal configuration (in the plane of the magnetic film and perpendicular to the slits in the gold grating) to the metal-dielectric structure modifies the field distribution of the optical modes and thus changes the mode excitation conditions. In the optical far field, this manifests in the alteration of the optical transmittance or reflectance when the structure becomes magnetized. This magneto-optical effect is shown to represent a novel class of effects related to the magnetic-field-induced modification of the Bloch modes of the periodic hybrid structure. That is why we define this effect as "longitudinal magnetophotonic intensity effect" (LMPIE). The LMPIE has two contributions, odd and even in magnetization. While the even LMPIE is maximal for the light polarized perpendicular to the grating slits (TM) and minimal for the orthogonal polarization (TE), the odd LMPIE takes maximum values at some intermediate polarization and vanishes for pure TM and TE polarizations. Two principal modes of the magnetic layer - TM and TE - acquire in the longitudinal magnetic field additional field components and thus turn into quasi-TM and quasi-TE modes, respectively. The largest LMPIE is observed for excitation of the antisymmetrical quasi-TE mode by TM-polarized light. The value of the LMPIE measured for the plasmonic structure with a magnetic film of Bi2Dy1Fe4Ga1O12 composition is about 1% for the even effect and 2% for the odd one. However, the plasmonic structure with a magnetic film with a higher concentration of bismuth (Bi2.97Er0.03Fe4Al0.5Ga0.5O12) gives significantly larger LMPIE: even LMPIE reaches 24% and odd LMPIE is 9%. Enhancement of the magneto-optical figure of merit (defined as the ratio of the specific Faraday angle of a magnetic film to its absorption coefficient) of the magnetic films potentially causes the even LMPIE to exceed 100% as is predicted by calculations. Thus, the nanostructured material described here may be considered as an ultrafast magnetophotonic light valve.
