- We report the synthesis of carboxyl-functionalized silica-coated CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) via a reverse microemulsion approach. This facile method does not need to change the solvent phase of the nanoparticles during the synthesis process, and requires no other reaction condition such as high temperature or inertia atmosphere. The synthesized nanoparticles have many advantages, such as mono-dispersed and stable in aqueous solution, minimal non-specific targeting, and more direct and cost-effective for bio-conjugation. The carboxyl functionalized nanoparticles were further conjugated with apo-transferrin for receptor-mediated targeting in cancer cell lines. In vitro experiments have revealed that the cellular uptake of Tf-conjugated nanoparticles was significantly higher than that of (only-)carboxyl functionalized nanoparticles in HeLa cells, which are well known to over-express the transferrin-receptor. The bio-conjugated nanoparticles are potentially useful as efficient probes for bio-diagnosis, both in vitro and in vivo.

Electroweak measurements in electron positron collisions at W-boson-pair energies at LEP

- Electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the electron positron collider LEP at CERN from 1995 to 2000 are reported. The combined data set considered in this report corresponds to a total luminosity of about 3 fb(-1) collected by the four LEP experiments ALEPH, DELPHI, 13 and OPAL, at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 130 GeV to 209 GeV. Combining the published results of the four LEP experiments, the measurements include total and differential cross-sections in photon-pair, fermion-pair and four-fermion production, the latter resulting from both double-resonant WW and ZZ production as well as singly resonant production. Total and differential cross-sections are measured precisely, providing a stringent test of the Standard Model at centre-of-mass energies never explored before in electron positron collisions. Final-state interaction effects in four-fermion production, such as those arising from colour reconnection and Bose Einstein correlations between the two W decay systems arising in WW production, are searched for and upper limits on the strength of possible effects are obtained. The data are used to determine fundamental properties of the W boson and the electroweak theory. Among others, the mass and width of the W boson, m(w) and Gamma(w), the branching fraction of W decays to hadrons, B(W -> had), and the trilinear gauge-boson self-couplings g(1)(Z), K-gamma and lambda(gamma), are determined to be: m(w) = 80.376 +/- 0.033 GeV Gamma(w) = 2.195 +/- 0.083 GeV B(W -> had) = 67.41 +/- 0.27% g(1)(Z) = 0.984(-0.020)(+0.018) K-gamma - 0.982 +/- 0.042 lambda(gamma) = 0.022 +/- 0.019. - A novel double-pumped ring cavity multiwavelength fiber optical parametric oscillator (MW-FOPO) with tunable wavelength spacing is proposed. In the MW-FOPO, we utilize a highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber as the gain medium and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer as the comb-like filter. Twenty-four-wavelength lasing of the double-pumped MW-FOPO with a ripple less than +/- 4.3 dB and a wavelength spacing of about 0.8 nm in a wavelength range from 1541 to 1558 nm is experimentally demonstrated. The wavelength spacing can be continuously tuned and multiwavelength lasings with wavelength spacings of 0.08, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 nm are demonstrated, respectively. We discussed the power stability of the multiwavelength lasing of the double-pumped MW-FOPO. A comparison of the output spectra among the double-pumped MW-FOPO, the single-pumped MW-FOPO, and the multiwavelength erbium-doped fiber laser is also presented.

- We explore in this work the use of Cu as a cathode material in organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) and find a dual electron–injection enhancement mechanism derived from the LiF layer. Different from what observed previously in Ag- and Au-cathode devices, the LiF buffer layer in the Cu-cathode OLEDs starts to play its role in performance improvement when it is much thinner than 3 nm, the optimal value of buffer thickness, and in the case of optimal thickness, the device exhibits excellent performance comparable to conventional Al-cathode device. The phenomenon observed is ascribed to enhanced electron injection as a result of combined effect of interfacial reaction and tunneling barrier reduction mechanism: while chemical reaction plays a key role at the very beginning of interface formation, tunneling dominates in the subsequent stage leading to the tremendous improvement of the characteristics.

- Technological capabilities in Chinese manufacturing have been transformed in the last three decades. However, the extent to which and how domestic market oriented state owned enterprises (SOEs) have developed their capabilities remain important questions. The East Asian latecomermodel has been adapted to study six Chinese SOEs in the automotive, steel and machine tools sectors to assess capability levels attained and the role of external sources and internal efforts in developing them. All six enterprises demonstrate high competence in operating established technology, managing investment and making product and process improvements but differ in innovative capability. While the East Asian latecomer model in which linking, leveraging and learning explain technological capability development is relevant for the companies studied, it needs to be adapted for Chinese SOEs to take account of types of external links and leverage ofenterprises, the role of government, enterprise level management motives and means of financing development

- The genetic bases of demographic changes and artificial selection underlying domestication are of great interest in evolutionary biology. Here we perform whole-genome sequencing of multiple grey wolves, Chinese indigenous dogs and dogs of diverse breeds. Demographic analysis show that the split between wolves and Chinese indigenous dogs occurred 32,000 years ago and that the subsequent bottlenecks were mild. Therefore, dogs may have been under human selection over a much longer time than previously concluded, based on molecular data, perhaps by initially scavenging with humans. Population genetic analysis identifies a list of genes under positive selection during domestication, which overlaps extensively with the corresponding list of positively selected genes in humans. Parallel evolution is most apparent in genes for digestion and metabolism, neurological process and cancer. Our study, for the first time, draws together humans and dogs in their recent genomic evolution.

- Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have mapped risk alleles for at least 10 distinct cancers to a small region of 63 000 bp on chromosome 5p15.33. This region harbors the TERT and CLPTM1L genes; the former encodes the catalytic subunit of telomerase reverse transcriptase and the latter may play a role in apoptosis. To investigate further the genetic architecture of common susceptibility alleles in this region, we conducted an agnostic subset-based meta-analysis (association analysis based on subsets) across six distinct cancers in 34 248 cases and 45 036 controls. Based on sequential conditional analysis, we identified as many as six independent risk loci marked by common single-nucleotide polymorphisms: five in the TERT gene (Region 1: rs7726159, P = 2.10 × 10(-39); Region 3: rs2853677, P = 3.30 × 10(-36) and PConditional = 2.36 × 10(-8); Region 4: rs2736098, P = 3.87 × 10(-12) and PConditional = 5.19 × 10(-6), Region 5: rs13172201, P = 0.041 and PConditional = 2.04 × 10(-6); and Region 6: rs10069690, P = 7.49 × 10(-15) and PConditional = 5.35 × 10(-7)) and one in the neighboring CLPTM1L gene (Region 2: rs451360; P = 1.90 × 10(-18) and PConditional = 7.06 × 10(-16)). Between three and five cancers mapped to each independent locus with both risk-enhancing and protective effects. Allele-specific effects on DNA methylation were seen for a subset of risk loci, indicating that methylation and subsequent effects on gene expression may contribute to the biology of risk variants on 5p15.33. Our results provide strong support for extensive pleiotropy across this region of 5p15.33, to an extent not previously observed in other cancer susceptibility loci.
