  • Dual career pathways of transnational athletes
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Psychology of Sport And Exercise. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 1469-0292 .- 1878-5476. ; 21, s. 125-134
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ObjectivesTransnationalism, as part of the globalization processes, has transformed the lifestyle and the course of athletes' careers. This presents previously unexplored challenges encountered by student-athletes in combining athletic and academic pursuits. In this article, we propose a conceptual framework for the taxonomy of transnational dual careers (DC).Design and methodNarrative inquiry from the life story perspective was used to elicit and analyze career narratives of six transnational athletes (3 male and 3 female), generating about five interview hours per athlete. The developmental transition from secondary to higher education was chosen as a key transition to classify the DC pathways. Additional insights into DC mobilization across international borders were gleaned by employing the typologies of sport migrants developed in the sport labor migration research.ResultsThree patterns of transnational DC were discerned from the narratives based on the direction of geographic mobility and the core migration motive underpinning the storyline. Within the present dataset, the taxonomies are: (1) Within EU mobility: the sport exile DC pathway; (2) Mobility to the U.S.A.: the sport mercenary DC pathway; and (3) Mobility to the U.S.A.: the nomadic cosmopolitan DC pathway.ConclusionsThe identified transnational DC paths are not exhaustive, and highlight possibilities of individual development, unfolding through the matrices of social structures in a given location. Further research with a diverse set of transnational athletes is needed to test and expand the proposed taxonomy. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

  • Cultural transition forbprofessional development : case study of the Israeli men’s U18 national handball team migrated to Germany
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Abstract book. ; , s. 104-104
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The globalisation of sport culture has led athletes to engage in short-term cultural transitions for professional development (e.g., Ryba, Haapanen, Mosek, & Ng, 2012). This case study describes the cultural transition of the Israeli men’s U18 national handball team to train and compete in Germany for a full competitive season, as part of a specialised Training Abroad Program (TAP). Qualitative and quantitative data were collected longitudinally as part of sport psychology services offered to the team. Data analysis was guided by an integrated career change and transition framework (ICCT; Samuel, Stambulova, & Ashkenazi, in press). The transition demands covered on-court (e.g., increased training load) and off-court (e.g., a foreign culture, residing at a hotel) issues. Players perceived this transition as significant and positive, although they varied in emotional responses due to differences in professional progress and feelings of loneliness. In response to selection for the TAP, most players relied on consulting with others. The transition barriers were also related to on-court (e.g., injuries) and off-court (e.g., cultural differences, difficulties in studying) issues. Players varied in their conscious decision to change (i.e., apply all necessary adjustments) and coping effectiveness. High athletic identity, external support, and coping strategies facilitated the transition coping and positive perception of the transition outcome. Players exhibited several transition pathways, as suggested by the ICCT. This is the first case study of a national team that migrated for such a long period for professional development purposes. Our findings illustrate the dynamics and multifaceted nature of the cultural transition.

  • Career profiles of athlete-coach relationships : Descriptions and interpretations
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International journal of sports science & coaching. - London : Sage Publications. - 1747-9541 .- 2048-397X. ; 11:3, s. 395-409
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to explore athlete-coach relationships from an athletic career perspective with the objectives: 1) to create individual career profiles of athlete-coach relationships, 2) to illustrate the career profiles describing athletes’ subjective experiences of working with all the coaches involved in their careers, and (c) to summarize athletes’ views on the dynamics of athlete-coach relationships in the course of their careers. Two case studies using narrative interviews with one team and one individual sport athlete (both Swedish) were made. The Narrative Oriented Inquiry model was used to guide the data collection, treatment and interpretation. The results representing over 20 relationships in total are presented as individual career profiles of athlete-coach relationships followed by interpretive narratives exploring more in detail the different athlete-coach relationships throughout their careers. Poems summarizing the athletes’ perceived dynamics of their relationships with coaches are then presented using only the athletes own words.

  • International society of sport psychology position stand : Athletes’ mental health, performance, and development
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology. - New York : Taylor & Francis. - 1612-197X .- 1557-251X. ; 16:6, s. 622-639
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mental health is a major resource for athletes in relation to their performance and development. Concurrently, athletes experience additional mental health risk factors compared to non-athletic population, such as high training loads, tough competitions, and a stressful lifestyle. Contemporary statistics demonstrate a substantial growth in athletes’ mental health-related problems, such as concussion, overtraining, and identity crisis. Therefore, the International Society of Sport Psychology through this Position Stand provides support to sport psychology researchers, practitioners, sport participants, and stakeholders in understanding: (a) mental health phenomenon based on continuum-type models outlining mental illness (prevalence vs. absence) and mental health in association with peak performance, (b) major findings of research dealing with athletes’ performance, career and personal (e.g. identity) development in relation to mental health issues, and (c) interventions aimed at monitoring and maintaining athletes’ mental health as well as preventing various forms of mental ill-being. Five major sections reflect the logic outlined above (i.e. from definitions and theories to research and practice), complemented by 10 postulates summarising the International Society of Sport Psychology message intended to spur further discussions on how to make athletes healthier and, thus, more resourceful for (and through) sport. © 2017 International Society of Sport Psychology

  • ISSP Position Stand : Social missions through sport and exercise psychology
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology. - New York, NY : Taylor & Francis. - 1612-197X .- 1557-251X. ; 14:1, s. 4-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sport psychology is expanding in how it might be utilised to benefit human activity and social life. Performance enhancement remains central to the field; however, there is growing interest in how sport psychology practices and sport contexts can be crafted to enable social missions. The classification of social missions through the context of sports might vary from one sport development agency or scholar to the next, and could relate to health and well-being, sport for peace, social development, disease prevention, and positive youth development. This position stand has been conceived to situate the International Society of Sport Psychology within sport for development for the betterment of people in communities, countries, and regions. This ISSP Position Stand is structured into a historical overview of sports as social missions, sport for cultural exchange and social justice, sport for health and well-being, sport for positive youth development, sport for peace, and postulations and recommendations. © 2015 International Society of Sport Psychology

  • Psychological support for the Canadian Olympic Boxing Team in meta-transitions through the National Team Program
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology. - Philadelphia : Taylor & Francis. - 1612-197X .- 1557-251X. ; 13:1, s. 74-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Canadian Olympic Men's Boxing Team was once among the most successful contingents in the world in its sport discipline but then lost this prominent status. At present, Canada's Boxing Team has begun preparation for the 2016 Olympics with the “Own the Podium” (OTP) Program providing financial support to the National Boxing Team and targeted Olympic candidates expected to podium at the 2016 Olympic Games. The authors reveal in this paper the first step of the project “Psychological Support for the Canadian Olympic Boxing Team in Meta-Transitions through the National Team Program” aimed at planning for the boxers' progressions through the 2013–2016 Olympic cycle. Integral to this program, the athletes' progressions are supported through the development of a system of National Team Psychological Support Services (NT-PSS). Within this submission, the authors further develop a vision of the 2016 Olympic Games as a career transition and consider how the Canadian Men's Boxing Team's staff, located within a broader national sport system, proactively map six meta-transitions for the boxers throughout the 2013–2016 Olympic cycle and plan the NT-PSS' content accordingly. The forthcoming meta-transitions are seen as turns between the phases of progressing Olympic cycle: (A) entering the National Team Program, (B) entering major international tournaments, (C) Olympic qualification, (D) focused preparation for the Olympics, (E) to the Olympic podium, and (F) to the post-Games. © 2014 International Society of Sport Psychology.

  • Catch the feeling of Flying : Guided walks through a trampoline Olympic development environment
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Case Studies in Sport and Exercise Psychology. - Champaign, IL : Human Kinetics. - 2470-4849 .- 2470-4857. ; 3:1, s. 11-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Olympic podium performances represent peak accomplishments in athletes’ developments. Seanor, Schinke, Stambulova, Ross, and Kpazai (2017) identified environmental factors within a high-performance Canadian trampoline sport environment that developed decorated Olympic medalists. The current intrinsic case study was authored to further highlight the idiosyncrasies of a high-performance trampoline environment (re)presenting stories garnered from within this localized Canadian sport environment. Through guided walks, a mobile method of conversational interviews, three contextual experts engaged in Olympic athlete development provided tours of their sport environment. Each contextual expert’s guided walk played out uniquely inrelation to their ascribed role (i.e., Olympic coach, Assistant coach and Olympic champion). Three main themes were identified through interpretive thematic analysis: 1) creating lift (sub-themes: facility design; sport culture paragons), 2) providing a tailwind (sub-themes: establishing athlete-coach partnerships; team interactions), and 3) soaring onto the Olympic podium (sub-themes: preparing athletes to be untethered; competitive collaboration). Each theme is presented through three portrait vignettes, with discrete vantages derived from each contextual expert to illuminate the context from idiosyncratic ascribed roles within the environment. These stories create a fulsome (re)presentation of a high-performance sport environment through the interplay of the contextual experts’ narratives, their surrounding context, and their Olympic podium accomplishments.

    • Olympic athletes’ training environments influence their abilities to develop and excel as Olympians. Our authors considered a Canadian trampoline training environment with a history of developing Olympic medal-winning athletes from the grassroots through to Olympic podium. The sport environment is presented, drawing upon guided walks, through a cursory description in accordance with the Environmental Success Factors model derived from a holistic ecological approach to talent development. This presentation of the Skyriders Training Environment (STE) reveals how environmental factors facilitate Olympic talent development culminating in the highest level of artistic sport performance. © 2017 Association for Applied Sport Psychology
