  • Factors motivating women's informal micro-entrepreneurship: Experiences from Penang, Malaysia
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Gender and Entrepreneurship. - : Emerald. - 1756-6266. ; 4:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - The aim of this paper is to examine the factors which motivate women’s informal micro-entrepreneurship in Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach - The qualitative analysis employed in this paper is based upon empirical findings from field work conducted in the state of Penang on the northwestern coast of Peninsular Malaysia. 39 hawkers (petty traders) were interviewed using an interview guide which contained open-ended questions regarding work-life history, labor market choices and conditions of work. Two selected case stories are presented as well as the general findings across the whole sample. Findings - In contrast to the view that women’s informal micro-entrepreneurship is motivated only by ‘involuntary exclusion from the labor market’ or ‘poverty’ this paper has found that women’s micro-entrepreneurship can be motivated by a wide range of factors – including: to earn an income, interest in doing business, increased flexibility and autonomy, possibility to combine with family obligations and re-negotiating spatial practices. Conclusive with previous studies it also argues that necessity and choice may be ‘co-present’ in the motives to enter entrepreneurship. Research limitations/implications - The limited sample of this study has implications for the generalizability of results. Further studies into the women’s micro-entrepreneurial activities in Malaysia are therefore encouraged. Originality/value - There are very few studies in the Malaysian context which focus upon women's informal micro-entrepreneurship in general and hawking in particular. This study therefore presents new knowledge around women's informal micro-entrepreneurship in Malaysia.

  • ‘I am too old! Who is going to give me a job?’ Women hawkers in Teluk Bahang, Penang, Malaysia
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Workplace Rights. - 1938-4998. ; 15:1, s. 111-132
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The informal economy is of massive importance to women workers in the Southeast Asian region. This article explores women's informal work as hawkers in the village of Teluk Bahang in the State of Penang in northern Malaysia. Focusing on women's right to work and their rights at work, the article engages in an analysis of women's labor market experiences and decisions during different periods in their lives as well as an analysis of the gendered outcome of contemporary hawker policies. Spatial aspects are central to this analysis, and it is argued that hawking represents not only an important informal economic activity for women but also a way for them to gain extended access to public places of work.

  • Faking orgasms and the idea of successful sexuality
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Janus Head. - : Trivium Publications. - 1524-2269 .- 1521-9194. ; 13:1, s. 97-118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the Nordic countries, at a time when women have only recently won the right to their own bodies and to a sexuality of  their own and for themselves, women nevertheless fake orgasms. Moreover, a common question posed to the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education (RFSU) deals with lack of desire. Not only are women faking and complaining of lack of desire, but men as well. It seems that contemporary ideals surrounding sexuality converge with quests for not only pleasure and love, but also for fitting in and experiencing what is conceived of as normal and “successful” sexuality. This essay examines the contemporary and prevalent phenomenon of faked orgasms from the perspectives of feminist theory and phenomenology.

  • Gendersensitive Pädagogik in Schweden : Vorbereitung für Geschlechtergerechtigkeit bereits im Kindergarten?
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Betrifft Mädchen. - Weinheim, Germany : Juventa. - 1438-5295. ; 23:1, s. 31-34

  • Theorizing practice: Understanding resistance against gender-based violence in Cambodia
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: NORMA–Nordic Journal for Masculinity Studies. ; :Nr. 1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyzes local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Cambodia and their programs against gender-based violence (GBV), in order to understand what notions of power, agency and resistance that reside within these programs. What theoretical concepts do we need in order to understand the organizations’ attempts to reduce GBV? The interviews displayed a number of practices of resistance against GBV. In particular the organizations emphasized the importance of approaching men in the resistance against GBV. In their approach to Cambodian men, the (male) trainers of the organizations used different strategies. Overall, the analysis shows how local organizations try to promote a global (western informed) image of a peaceful, caring man. For example, the Cambodian trainers mixed different kinds of representations in order to negotiate the prevailing masculinity. The men’s argumentations were also deconstructed by the trainers who exposed the multiple meanings and contradictions that dwelled in the men’s claims of a ‘proper’ masculinity. In addition, the organizations attempted to utilize a hegemonic masculinity in negotiating local violent masculinities. In the nexus between different masculinities, the hegemonic masculinity composes a norm, creating a disciplinary process where individual men are ‘forced’ to adapt to the practices and characteristics of this masculinity.
