    • A post-conflict society tends to get locked in a history war. As the practice of history in its broad sense is a moral craft, representations of guilt and victimhood prevail in social memory. The representations are often bolstered by mythical references, wherefore deconstruction of myths is expected from history education for the purposes of post-conflict reconciliation. This article deals with the post-conflict uses of history in Finland, South Africa and Bosnia-Herzegovina. The three cases constitute examples of a class war, a race conflict and an ethno-religious armed clash. The memory politics and history curricula differ between the cases. Their comparison indicates, how far an imposition of one ´truth´, a dialogue of two ´truths´ and segregation of different memory communities are feasible strategies of post-conflict history education. The article suggests that history lessons can be an asset instead of a liability in the pursuit of reconciliation.

  • Mutations in Arg143 and Lys192 of the Human Mast Cell Chymase Markedly Affect the Activity of Five Potent Human Chymase Inhibitors

    • Chymotrypsin-like serine proteases are found in high abundance in mast cell granules. By site-directed mutatgenesis, we have previously shown that basic amino acids in positions 143 and 192 (Arg and Lys respectively) of the human mast cell chymase are responsible for an acidic amino acid residue preference in the P2' position of substrates. In order to study the influence of these two residues in determining the specificity of chymase inhibitors, we have synthesized five different potent inhibitors of the human chymase. The inhibitory effects of these compounds were tested against the wild-type enzyme, against two single mutants Arg143Gln and Lys192Met and against a double mutant, Arg143Gln+Lys192Met. We observed a markedly reduced activity of all five inhibitors with the double mutant, indicating that these two basic residues are involved in conferring the specificity of these inhibitors. The single mutants showed an intermediate phenotype, with the strongest effect on the inhibitor by the mutation in Lys192. The Lys192 and the double mutations also affected the rate of cleavage of angiotensin I but did not seem to affect the specificity in the cleavage of the Tyr(4)-Ile(5) bond. A more detailed knowledge about which amino acids that confer the specificity of an enzyme can prove to be of major importance for development of highly specific inhibitors for the human chymase and other medically important enzymes.

    • The effect on a model drug delivery system when adding a drug, lidocaine, has been studied. Temperature and concentration dependence of a nonionic microemulsion with part of the oil, 1 and 10 vol. %, substituted with drug has been investigated. A nonionic oil-in-water microemulsion consisting of CH3(CH2)(11)(OCH2CH2)(5)OH, (C12E5), decane, water and the drug (lidocaine) that has been used to substitute part of the oil was studied. The microscopic differences have been derived from small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data and the results are compared with light scattering data. Using these results together with the macroscopic differences, as observed in the phase diagram (lowering of phase boundaries), between the systems with and without lidocaine can be explained.

  • COVID-19-related hospital admission in spouses of partners in at-risk occupations

    • Objective This study aimed to quantify the risk of COVID-19-related hospital admission in spouses living with partners in at-risk occupations in Denmark during 2020-21.Methods Within a registry-based cohort of all Danish employees (N=2 451 542), we identified cohabiting couples, in which at least one member (spouse) held a job that according to a job exposure matrix entailed low risk of occupational exposure to SARS-CoV-2 (N=192 807 employees, 316 COVID-19 hospital admissions). Risk of COVID-19-related hospital admission in such spouses was assessed according to whether their partners were in jobs with low, intermediate or high risk for infection. Overall and sex-specific incidence rate ratios (IRR) of COVID-19-related hospital admission were computed by Poisson regression with adjustment for relevant covariates.Results The risk of COVID-19-related hospital admission was increased among spouses with partners in highrisk occupations [adjusted IRR (IRRadj)1.59, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.1-2.2], but not intermediate-risk occupations (IRRadj 0.97 95% 0.8-1.3). IRR for having a partner in a high-risk job was elevated during the first three pandemic waves but not in the fourth (IRRadj 0.48 95% CI 0.2-1.5). Sex did not modify the risk of hospital admission.Conclusions SARS-CoV-2 transmission at the workplace may pose an increased risk of severe COVID-19 among spouses in low-risk jobs living with partners in high-risk jobs, which emphasizes the need for preventive measures at the workplace in future outbreaks of epidemic contagious disease. When available, effective vaccines seem essential.

  • Co-ownership shares in condominium – a comparative analysis for selected civil law jurisdictions

    • Condominium is a special and relatively new type of property right emerged in the last century to be a remedy for the management problems in multi-unit buildings. There are many types of condominium regimes, as described in EUI (2005), UNECE (2005) and van der Merwe (2016). The common elements include: (a) Individual right to an apartment, (b) co-ownership (joint ownership) of the common property or the whole property, and (c) membership of an incorporated or unincorporated owners' association (van der Merwe, 2015, p. 5). The ownership shares in the common property are here referred to as co-ownership shares; yet, alternative terms include ownership fraction, condominium share, participation quota, share value, and unit entitlement. Generally, these shares will determine the proportional contribution to the common expenses and the share of common profits, as well as the voting power of each condominium unit owner in the administration of the condominium. The most common approaches to the determination of the co-ownership shares are based on equality, relative size or relative value of each condominium unit, or a combination of such (van der Merwe, 1994, p. 57–58). The literature presents detailed descriptions and comparative analysis related to condominium systems in different jurisdictions (e.g. van der Merwe, 2015; 2016; Paulsson, 2007; EUI, 2005; UNECE, 2005); however, the procedural aspects related to the allotment of co-ownership shares still need to be further investigated. This article aims to describe condominium systems in the Netherlands, Sweden and Turkey, and compare legal provisions and procedures related to the allotment of co-ownership shares in these jurisdictions. The main purpose is to clarify the methodologies behind the determination of the co-ownership shares in national systems to bring new insights to countries, which are trying to revise their national provisions.

  • Composite indicator for railway infrastructure management

    • The assessment of efficiency and effectiveness of past maintenance decisions and actions is an essential element in maintenance process. The significance of this is not only limited to communicating the value contribution of maintenance to overall business objectives but also to drive maintenance for improvement and towards excellence. However the existence of numerous maintenance result areas and many operational level indicators often lead to distributed information that is not in a suitable format required to support decision making. This paper motivates the use of fuzzy logic approach to aggregate selected indicators to appreciate the information bit distributed in each indicator. The selected indicators include measures related to safety, comfort, punctuality, availability and reliability aspects of maintenance. Linguistic description and fuzzy sets are developed for each of the indicators which are regarded as input parameters. Also domain experts are employed to develop inference rules for the aggregation process. The methodology of using fuzzy inference system for aggregating maintenance performance indicators is demonstrated with selected line sections of Trafikverket (Swedish Transport Administration). The resulting composite indicator gives a reliable quantification of the health condition of the asset and performance of maintenance within the period under consideration. This can be easily communicated and benchmarked within the organization of the infrastructure manager.

    • Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) play important roles in tissue homeostasis and host defense, but the proliferative properties and migratory behavior of especially human ILCs remain poorly understood. Here we mapped at single-cell resolution the spatial distribution of quiescent and proliferative human ILCs within the vascular versus tissue compartment. For this purpose, we employed MISTRG humanized mice as an in-vivo model to study human ILCs. We uncovered subset-specific differences in the proliferative status between vascular and tissue ILCs within lymphoid and non-lymphoid organs. We also identified CD117-CRTH2-CD45RA+ ILCs in the spleen that were highly proliferative and expressed the transcription factor TCF-1. These proliferative ILCs were present during the neonatal period in human blood and emerged early during population of the human ILC compartment in MISTRG mice transplanted with human hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs). Single-cell RNA-sequencing combined with intravascular cell labeling suggested that proliferative ILCs actively migrated from the local vasculature into the spleen tissue. Collectively, our comprehensive map reveals the proliferative topography of human ILCs, linking cell migration and spatial compartmentalization with cell division.

    • ObjectivesIt is unclear how home environmental factors influence relocation decisions. We examined whether indoor accessibility, entrance accessibility, bathroom safety features, housing type, and housing condition were associated with relocations either within the community or to residential care facilities.MethodsWe used prospective data over 4 years from the nationally representative National Health and Aging Trends Study in the United States of Medicare beneficiaries 65 years and older living in the community (N = 7,197). We used multinomial regression analysis with survey weights.ResultsOver the 4 years, 8.2% of the population moved within the community, and 3.9% moved to residential care facilities. After adjusting for demographics and health factors, poor indoor accessibility was found to be associated with moves within the community but not to residential care facilities. No additional home environmental factors were associated with relocation.DiscussionOne-floor dwellings, access to a lift, or having a kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom on the same floor may help older adults age in place. Understanding which modifiable home environmental factors trigger late-life relocation, and to where, has practical implications for developing policies and programs to help older adults age in their place of choice.

  • High-Gain Graphene Transistors with a Thin AlOx Top-Gate Oxide

    • The high-frequency performance of transistors is usually assessed by speed and gain figures of merit, such as the maximum oscillation frequency f(max), cutoff frequency f(T), ratio f(max)/f(T), forward transmission coefficient S-21, and open-circuit voltage gain A(v). All these figures of merit must be as large as possible for transistors to be useful in practical electronics applications. Here we demonstrate high-performance graphene field-effect transistors (GFETs) with a thin AlOx gate dielectric which outperform previous state-of-the-art GFETs: we obtained f(max)/f(T) > 3, A(v) > 30 dB, and S-21 = 12.5 dB (at 10 MHz and depending on the transistor geometry) from S-parameter measurements. A dc characterization of GFETs in ambient conditions reveals good current saturation and relatively large transconductance similar to 600 S/m. The realized GFETs offer the prospect of using graphene in a much wider range of electronic applications which require substantial gain.

    • OBJECTIVE: In males, the pubertal increase in sex hormone production has been associated with proatherogenic changes in lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. Aromatase inhibitors, a novel treatment modality for some growth disorders, may significantly influence these risk factors for cardiovascular disease by suppressing oestrogen biosynthesis and stimulating gonadal androgen production. In the current study, we explored the effects of aromatase inhibition on lipid metabolism, insulin sensitivity, body composition and serum adiponectin in peripubertal boys. DESIGN: Prospective, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled clinical study. METHODS: Thirty-one boys, aged 9.0-14.5 years, with idiopathic short stature were treated with the aromatase inhibitor letrozole (2.5 mg/day) or placebo for 2 years. During the treatment, the concentrations of sex hormones, IGF-I, lipids, lipoproteins and adiponectin were followed-up. The percentage of fat mass (FM) was assessed by skinfold measurements and insulin resistance by homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) index. RESULTS: In pubertal boys, who received letrozole, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) decreased by 0.47 mmol/l (P<0.01) during the study. Simultaneously, their percentage of FM decreased from 17.0 to 10.5 (P<0.001), in an inverse relationship with serum testosterone. The concentrations of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides and HOMA index remained at pretreatment level in both groups. Serum adiponectin decreased similarly in letrozole- and placebo-treated pubertal boys (2.9 and 3.3 mg/l respectively). CONCLUSIONS: In males, aromatase inhibition reduces HDL-C and decreases relative FM after the start of puberty. The treatment does not adversely affect insulin sensitivity in lean subjects.

    • The evolution of the Internet is inhibited by the routing system's lack of ability to provide instant routes at host granularity. We argue that it is necessary to divide the addressing into naming and location and use separate mechanisms for the two functions. We present the split naming/forwarding architecture (SNF), which divides the network layer into naming and forwarding layers. The design rationale of SNF is discussed and we describe an implementation for deployment on top of current network infrastructures.

    • Activity difference based learning algorithms-such as contrastive Hebbian learning and equilibrium propagation-have been proposed as biologically plausible alternatives to error backpropagation. However, on traditional digital chips these algorithms suffer from having to solve a costly inference problem twice, making these approaches more than two orders of magnitude slower than back-propagation. In the analog realm equilibrium propagation may be promising for fast and energy efficient learning, but states still need to be inferred and stored twice. Inspired by lifted neural networks and compartmental neuron models we propose a simple energy based compartmental neuron model, termed dual propagation, in which each neuron is a dyad with two intrinsic states. At inference time these intrinsic states encode the error/activity duality through their difference and their mean respectively. The advantage of this method is that only a single inference phase is needed and that inference can be solved in layerwise closed-form. Experimentally we show on common computer vision datasets, including Imagenet32x32, that dual propagation performs equivalently to back-propagation both in terms of accuracy and runtime.

    • A multistep synthesis was developed to prepare new 1,2,3-triazole-amino acid conjugates (6 and 7). These compounds contain the diaryl ether moiety and were synthesized via SNAr reaction under mild condition and in good yield. Their structures were confirmed by spectroscopic analyses (HR-MS, NMR, IR). These compounds showed significant antiproliferative activity (>30%) toward the breast MCF7 and liver HepG2 cancer cells lines at <10 mu M concentration.

    • Individual proteins, and small collections of proteins, have been extensively studied for at least two hundred years. Today, more than 350 genomes have been completely sequenced and the proteomes of these genomes have been at least partially mapped. The inventory of protein coding genes is the first step toward understanding the cellular machinery. Recent studies have generated a comprehensive data set for the physical interactions between the proteins of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, in addition to some less extensive proteome interaction maps of higher eukaryotes. Hence, it is now becoming feasible to investigate important questions regarding the evolution of protein-protein networks. For instance, what is the evolutionary relationship between proteins that interact, directly or indirectly? Do interacting proteins co-evolve? Are they often derived from each other? In order to perform such proteome-wide investigations, a top-down view is necessary. This is provided by network (or graph) theory.The proteins of the cell may be viewed as a community of individual molecules which together form a society of proteins (nodes), a network, where the proteins have various kinds of relationships (edges) to each other. There are several different types of protein networks, for instance the two networks studied here, namely metabolic networks and protein-protein interaction networks. The metabolic network is a representation of metabolism, which is defined as the sum of the reactions that take place inside the cell. These reactions often occur through the catalytic activity of enzymes, representing the nodes, connected to each other through substrate/product edges. The indirect interactions of metabolic enzymes are clearly different in nature from the direct physical interactions, which are fundamental to most biological processes, which constitute the edges in protein-protein interaction networks.This thesis describes three investigations into the evolution of metabolic and protein-protein interaction networks. We present a comparative study of the importance of retrograde evolution, the scenario that pathways assemble backward compared to the direction of the pathway, and patchwork evolution, where enzymes evolve from a broad to narrow substrate specificity. Shifting focus toward network topology, a suggested mechanism for the evolution of biological networks, preferential attachment, is investigated in the context of metabolism. Early in the investigation of biological networks it seemed clear that the networks often display a particular, 'scale-free', topology. This topology is characterized by many nodes with few interaction partners and a few nodes (hubs) with a large number of interaction partners. While the second paper describes the evidence for preferential attachment in metabolic networks, the final paper describes the characteristics of the hubs in the physical interaction network of S. cerevisiae.

    • Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites simultaneously possess strong spin- orbit coupling (SOC) and structure inversion asymmetry, establishing a Rashba effect to influence light emission and photovoltaics. Here, we use mechanical bending as a convenient approach to investigate the Rashba effect through SOC in perovskite (MAPbI(3-x)Cl(x)) films by elastically deforming grains. It is observed that applying a concave bending can broaden the line shape of the magnetophotocurrent, increasing the internal magnetic parameter B-0 from 121 to 205 mT, which indicates an enhancement on SOC. Interestingly, the PL lifetime is found to be enlarged from 9.9 to 14.8 ns under this bending, which suggests that introducing compressive strain can essentially increase the Rashba effect through SOC, leading to an increase upon indirect band transition. Furthermore, the PL peak associated with the Rashba effect is shifted from 776 to 780 nm under this mechanical bending. Therefore, mechanical bending provides a convenient experimental method to approach the Rashba effect in hybrid perovskites.

  • An uncertainty methodology for solar occultation flux measurements: ammonia emissions from livestock production

    • Ammonia (NH3/ emissions can negatively affect ecosystems and human health, so they should be monitored and mitigated. This study presents methodology for the estimation of uncertainties in NH3 emissions measurements using the solar occultation flux (SOF) method. The reactive nature of NH3 makes its measurement challenging, but SOF offers a reliable open-path passive method which utilizes solar spectrum data, thereby avoiding gas adsorption within the instrument. To compute NH3 gas fluxes, horizontal and vertical wind speed profiles, as well as plume height estimates and spatially resolved column measurements, are integrated. A unique aspect of this work is the first-time description of plume height estimations derived from ground and column NH3 concentration measurements aimed at uncertainty reduction. Initial validation tests indicated measurement errors between -31 % and C14 % on average, which was slightly larger than the estimated expanded uncertainty ranging from ± 12 % to ± 17 %. Application of the methodology to assess emission rates from farms of various sizes showed uncertainties between ± 21 % and ± 37 %, generally influenced by systematic wind uncertainties and random errors. The method demonstrates the capacity to measure NH3 emissions from both small (~ 0.5 1 kg h-1/ and large (~ 100 kg h-1/ sources in high-density farming areas. Generally, the SOF method provided an expanded uncertainty below 30 % in measuring NH3 emissions from livestock production, which could be further improved by adhering to best application practices. This paper s findings offer the potential for broader applications, such as measuring NH3 fluxes from fertilized fields and in the oil and gas sector. However, these applications would require further research to adapt and refine the methodologies for these specific contexts.

  • Deep excursion beyond the proton dripline. I. Argon and chlorine isotope chains

    • The proton-unbound argon and chlorine isotopes have been studied by measuring trajectories of their decay-in-flight products by using a tracking technique with microstrip detectors. The proton (1p) and two-proton (2p) emission processes have been detected in the measured angular correlations "heavy-fragment"+p and "heavy-fragment"+p+p, respectively. The ground states of the previously unknown isotopes Cl30 and Cl28 have been observed for the first time, providing the 1p-separation energies Sp of -0.48(2) and -1.60(8), MeV, respectively. The relevant systematics of 1p- and 2p-separation energies have been studied theoretically in the core+p and core+p+p cluster models. The first-time observed excited states of Ar31 allow one to infer the 2p-separation energy S2p of 6(34) keV for its ground state. The first-time observed state in Ar29 with S2p=-5.50(18) MeV can be identified as either a ground state or an excited state according to different systematics.
