  • Tracking and labelling of interacting multiple targets
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: COMPUTER VISION - ECCV 2006, PT 3, PROCEEDINGS. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 3540338365 ; , s. 619-632
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Successful multi-target tracking requires solving two problems - localize the targets and label their identity. An isolated target's identity can be unambiguously preserved from one frame to the next. However, for long sequences of many moving targets, like a football game, grouping scenarios will occur in which identity labellings cannot be maintained reliably by using continuity of motion or appearance. This paper describes bow to match targets' identities despite these interactions. Trajectories of when a target is isolated are found. These trajectories end when targets interact and their labellings cannot be maintained. The interactions (merges and splits) of these trajectories form a graph structure. Appropriate feature vectors summarizing particular qualities of each trajectory are extracted. A clustering procedure based on these feature vectors allows the identities of temporally separated trajectories to be matched. Results are shown from a football match captured by a wide screen system giving a full stationary view of the pitch.\

  • The Archaeological Distribution of the Cuneiform Corpus
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Altorientalische Forschungen. - : Walter de Gruyter. - 0232-8461 .- 2196-6761. ; 50:2, s. 178-205
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study offers a first comprehensive, quantifiable overview of the geographical extent and scale of the cuneiform corpus. Though one of the oldest and longest-lived scripts in history, the sheer size of this corpus, being among the largest discrete bodies of written source material from the pre-modern world, is seldom properly appreciated. We review and evaluate past quantitative assessments of the corpus and current levels of catalogue digitisation and integration, pointing to gaps in general catalogues and principal issues relating to the quantification and interrogation of textual sources at the corpus-level. Combining a newly developed open access spatial index of c. 600 locations from across Europe, Asia, and Africa where cuneiform texts have been found with a quantitative survey of reported finds from scholarly literature, we then proceed to discuss the formation of the cuneiform corpus as an archaeological artefact. Aided by an extremely broad diachronic and diatopic outlook on a uniquely large body of written source material, this study offers an innovative and novel perspective on written corpora as archaeological artefacts.

  • Predictive Healthcare : Cervical Cancer Screening Risk Stratification and Genetic Disease Markers
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The use of Machine Learning is rapidly expanding into previously uncharted waters. In the medicine fields there are vast troves of data available from hospitals, biobanks and registries that now are being explored due to the tremendous advancement in computer science and its related hardware. The progress in genomic extraction and analysis has made it possible for any individual to know their own genetic code. Genetic testing has become affordable and can be used as a tool in treatment, discovery, and prognosis of individuals in a wide variety of healthcare settings. This thesis addresses three different approaches to-wards predictive healthcare and disease exploration; first, the exploita-tion of diagnostic data in Nordic screening programmes for the purpose of identifying individuals at high risk of developing cervical cancer so that their screening schedules can be intensified in search of new dis-ease developments. Second, the search for genomic markers that can be used either as additions to diagnostic data for risk predictions or as can-didates for further functional analysis. Third, the development of a Ma-chine Learning pipeline called ||-ROSETTA that can effectively process large datasets in the search for common patterns. Together, this provides a functional approach to predictive healthcare that allows intervention at early stages of disease development resulting in treatments with reduced health consequences at a lower financial burden

  • Detrital zircon geochronology of Ediacaran to Cambrian deep-water strata of the Franklinian basin, northern Ellesmere Island, Nunavut : implications for regional stratigraphic correlations
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Canadian journal of earth sciences (Print). - : Canadian Science Publishing. - 0008-4077 .- 1480-3313. ; 50:10, s. 1007-1018
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Enigmatic successions of deep-water strata referred to as the Nesmith beds and Grant Land Formation comprise the exposed base of the Franklinian passive margin sequence in northern Ellesmere Island, Nunavut. To test stratigraphic correlations with Ediacaran to Cambrian shallow-water strata of the Franklinian platform that are inferred by regional basin models, >500 detrital zircons from the Nesmith beds and Grant Land Formation were analyzed for sediment provenance analysis using laser ablation (LA-ICP-MS) and ion-microprobe (SIMS) methods. Samples of the Nesmith beds and Grant Land Formation are characterized by 1000-1300, 1600-2000, and 2500-2800 Ma detrital zircon age distributions and indicate provenance from rock assemblages of the Laurentian craton. In combination with regional stratigraphic constraints, these data support an Ediacaran to Cambrian paleodrainage model that features the Nesmith beds and Grant Land Formation as the offshore marine parts of a north-to northeast-directed depositional network. Proposed stratigraphic correlations between the Nesmith beds and Ediacaran platformal units of northern Greenland are consistent with the new detrital zircon results. Cambrian stratigraphic correlations within northern Ellesmere Island are permissive, but require further investigation because the Grant Land Formation provenance signatures agree with a third-order sedimentary system that has been homogenized by longshore current or gravity-flow processes, whereas coeval shallow-water strata yield a restricted range of detrital zircon ages and imply sources from local drainage areas or underlying rock units. The detrital zircon signatures of the Franklinian passive margin resemble those for the Cordilleran and Appalachian passive margins of Laurentia, which demonstrates the widespread recycling of North American rock assemblages after late Neoproterozoic continental rifting and breakup of supercontinent Rodinia.

  • Detrital zircon Hf isotopic compositions indicate a northern Caledonian connection for the Alexander terrane
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Lithosphere. - 1941-8264 .- 1947-4253. ; 5:2, s. 163-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Various plate reconstructions predict that the Alexander terrane, a Neoproterozoic-Jurassic crustal fragment now located in the North American Cordillera, evolved in proximity to the northern Appalachian-Caledonian convergent margin during assembly of supercontinent Laurussia. To test stratigraphic connections with Laurussia that are implied by these plate reconstructions, we measured the Hf isotopic compositions of 176 detrital zircons from two relevant sedimentary sequences of the Alexander terrane. An older, Upper Silurian-Lower Devonian terrestrial to shallow-marine molasse sequence yields 405-490 Ma detrital zircons with negative epsilon(Hf(t)) values and Mesoproterozoic to Paleoproterozoic Hf model ages. In combination with paleomagnetic and biogeographic constraints, these Hf data argue for the molasse strata to be now-displaced equivalents of the Old Red Sandstone and primarily sourced from crustally contaminated granitoids in the Greenland, Svalbard, or British Caledonides. Late Silurian-Early Devonian orogenesis in the Alexander terrane is therefore likely related to the Scandian-Salinic phase of Appalachian-Caledonian mountain building. Younger, Middle Devonian sequences of the Alexander terrane are endowed in 390-490 Ma detrital zircons with positive epsilon(Hf(t)) values and Neoproterozoic Hf model ages. These isotopic signatures are consistent with the erosion of local basement rocks during the opening of the Slide Mountain-Angayucham backarc rift and tectonic separation of the Alexander terrane from northern Laurussia.

  • Particulates of the surface microlayer of open water in the central Arctic Ocean in summer
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Marine Chemistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0304-4203. ; 91, s. 131-141
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The particulate content of samples of the surface microlayer water collected from the open water between ice floes at latitudes 88° to 89°N in August 2001 was examined by transmission electron microscopy. Concentrations varied from 2×107 ml−1 to more than 1014 ml−1 although bacterial counts made in the same samples varied by only about 50%. Size distributions of the particles were also very variable with modal diameter sizes of 10 nm in some samples and 50 nm in others, the 50-nm particles appearing to be clusters of the 10 nm ones. A mucus-like material held the particles together in rafts, strings or in balls. The largest particles were compact electron-opaque aggregates of smaller particles. The particles appeared to have very similar characteristics to the “microcolloids” observed in bulk seawater in lower latitude oceans. X-ray analyses of the elements with atomic numbers >16 showed all signals to be weak, suggesting a mainly organic composition. The elements that were most commonly greater than background levels were all those associated with marine biological activity. Rapid aggregation of polymers to form colloids has been noted and is likely to be an important cause of the observed variability of particulate concentrations in the surface microlayer. The possibility of an equally rapid dispersal under the influence of ultraviolet light is raised.

  • Cultural heritage, ethics and contemporary migrations
  • 2019. - 1
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cultural Heritage, Ethics and Contemporary Migrations breaks new ground in our understanding of the challenges faced by heritage practitioners and researchers in the contemporary world of mass migration, where people encounter new cultural heritage and relocate their own. It focuses particularly on issues affecting archaeological heritage sites and artefacts, which help determine and maintain social identity, a role problematised when populations are in flux. This diverse and authoritative collection brings together international specialists to discuss socio-political and ethical implications for the management of archaeological heritage in global society. With contributions by authors from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, including archaeologists, philosophers, cultural historians and custodians of cultural heritage, the volume explores a rich mix of contrasting, yet complementary, viewpoints and approaches. Among the topics discussed are the relations between culture and identity; the potentialities of museums and monuments to support or subvert a people’s sense of who they are; and how cultural heritage has been used to bring together communities containing people of different origins and traditions, yet without erasing or blurring their distinctive cultural features.Cultural Heritage, Ethics and Contemporary Migrations is a crucial text for archaeologists, curators, policymakers and others working in the heritage field, as well as for philosophers, political scientists and other readers interested in the links between immigration and cultural heritage.

  • Three-dimensional ??-symmetric topological phases with a Pontryagin index
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 109:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on a certain class of three-dimensional topological insulators and semimetals protected by spinless ?⁢? symmetry, hosting an integer-valued bulk invariant. We show using homotopy arguments that these phases host multigap topology, providing a realization of a single ℤ invariant in three spatial dimensions that is distinct from the Hopf index. We identify this invariant with the Pontryagin index, which describes Belavin-Polyakov-Schwartz-Tyupkin (BPST) instantons in particle physics contexts and corresponds to a three-sphere winding number. We study naturally arising multigap linked nodal rings, topologically characterized by split-biquaternion charges, which can be removed by non-Abelian braiding of nodal rings, even without closing a gap. We additionally recast the describing winding number in terms of gauge-invariant combinations of non-Abelian Berry connection elements, indicating relations to Pontryagin characteristic class in four dimensions. These topological configurations are furthermore related to fully nondegenerate multigap phases that are characterized by a pair of winding numbers relating to two isoclinic rotations in the case of four bands and can be generalized to an arbitrary number of bands. From a physical perspective, we also analyze the edge states corresponding to this Pontryagin index as well as their dissolution subject to the gap-closing disorder. Finally, we elaborate on the realization of these novel non-Abelian phases, their edge states, and linked nodal structures in acoustic metamaterials and trapped-ion experiments.

  • How politics shapes the outcomes of forest carbon finance
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability. - : Elsevier BV. - 1877-3435. ; 51, s. 7-14
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interest in forest-based carbon storage has led to growth in financing for carbon forestry. Most financial strategies rest on strong assumptions which are not valid in many parts of the world. We use cases drawn from tribal forestry in the US and government forestry in India to illustrate how carbon finance relies on the presence of enforceable rights, representative and accountable institutions, clear incentives, and symmetrical power relations. In the absence of these conditions, carbon finance provides perverse incentives that undermine biodiversity and human rights without storing carbon. We suggest that for forest-based carbon storage to be successful, more attention needs to be paid to underlying political reforms, as well as to policies that are not reliant on finance.

  • Trajectory PHD and CPHD filters
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. - 1941-0476 .- 1053-587X. ; 67:22, s. 5702-5714
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the probability hypothesis density filter (PHD) and the cardinality PHD (CPHD) filter for sets of trajectories, which are referred to as the trajectory PHD (TPHD) and trajectory CPHD (TCPHD) filters. Contrary to the PHD/CPHD filters, the TPHD/TCPHD filters are able to produce trajectory estimates from first principles. The TPHD filter is derived by recursively obtaining the best Poisson multitrajectory density approximation to the posterior density over the alive trajectories by minimising the Kullback-Leibler divergence. The TCPHD is derived in the same way but propagating an independent identically distributed (IID) cluster multitrajectory density approximation. We also propose the Gaussian mixture implementations of the TPHD and TCPHD recursions, the Gaussian mixture TPHD (GMTPHD) and the Gaussian mixture TCPHD (GMTCPHD), and the L-scan computationally efficient implementations, which only update the density of the trajectory states of the last L time steps.

  • Record electron self-cooling in cold-electron bolometers with a hybrid superconductor-ferromagnetic nanoabsorber and traps
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322 .- 2045-2322. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation is the only observable that allows studying the earliest stage of the Universe. Radioastronomy instruments for CMB investigation require low working temperatures around 100 mK to get the necessary sensitivity. On-chip electron cooling of receivers is a pathway for future space missions due to problems of dilution fridges at low gravity. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that in a Cold-Electron Bolometer (CEB) a theoretical limit of electron cooling down to 65 mK from phonon temperature of 300 mK can be reached. It is possible due to effective withdrawing of hot electrons from the tunnel barrier by double stock, special traps and suppression of Andreev Joule heating in hybrid Al/Fe normal nanoabsorber.

  • Adapting Antiquity : References to Classical Literature on Early Modern Swedish Medals
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IKON Journal of Iconographic Studies. - 1846-8551. ; 13, s. 303-314
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One visual medium that is rather overlooked these days was particularly suited to the proclamation of great deeds and the insinuation of the always so fashionable flair of Antiquity, namely medallic art. This paper presents a selection of case studies exploring the use of ancient topoi illustrated on medals, and studying the purpose and significance of medals depicting early modern Swedish monarchs. Questions will be raised about how references to classical literature such as Ovid, Vergil or Horace are combined within the limits of a medal and in what way are the classical references reused and adapted to the new context. The aim of this paper is to provide a complement to the iconographic analysis by paying particular attention to the inscriptions and their connection to the images presented on medals. Subsequently, this will shed light on the innovative usage of classical literature on medals from early modern Sweden.

  • Psychological distances to climate change and public preferences for biodiversity-augmenting attributes in family-owned production forests
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Forest Policy and Economics. - 1389-9341 .- 1872-7050. ; 163
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding public perceptions on how management can help adapt forests to climate change is fundamental to the design of socially-acceptable policies. A binary discrete choice experiment in Norway and Sweden was conducted to elicit public preferences for biodiversity-augmenting changes in three forest management attributes (set-aside, proportion of uneven-aged tree stands, and number and type of tree species) compared to typical status quo conditions in family-owned production forests. Importantly, how self-constructed psychological (spatial, social, temporal and hypothetical) distances to climate change were associated with management preferences was investigated. Following integrated choice and latent variable modeling approaches to account for their latency, our econometric results show that closer psychological distances to climate change were associated with increased support for biodiversity-augmenting changes in management attributes from status quo conditions of family-owned production forests. On average, the Norwegian public preferred larger set-asides and introducing one more broadleaved species, while the Swedish public favored changes in all attributes. The highest utility was derived from increasing set-aside areas from the status quo (5%) to 10% and 20% in both countries with respective average WTP of about 10 to 11 EUR/month in Norway, and approximately 10 to 14 EUR/month in Sweden. Findings point to universal acceptability of increasing set-aside areas in both nations, and public approval for uneven-aged and mixed forest management in Sweden.
