  • Avvikelsens mekanismer : Observationer av projekt i praktiken
  • 2009

  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Who am I? Who are we? And how are the two entities connected? These are key issues of this study. Socialization and other sense making processes create new social identities. One possible identity is a professional one. Professional identities are discussed as a construction where expectations and experiences of construed images, cultural and professional understandings are key elements. Social identities are fundamentally described as social and individual reflections. The purpose of the study is to extend the comprehension of how professional identities are constructed and to study new professionals navigation through the complex network of images and contrasting pictures that meet them in that process. The professional identity of Swedish police officers is focused. The profession is - by many of the ten informants in this recurrent, in-depth interview study - described as a dream from childhood. The first of four interview-series has been conducted in beginning of police education, the last after nine months work experience. There are two motives that all informants mention for choosing the profession. The first is a wish to care for others and for the society, the second is excitement. Other mentioned motives are the police profession regarded as teamwork with a high community spirit. It is expected to give good opportunities to develop as individuals and is thought to be a practical occupation, described with key words such as handy and flexible. The construed image, how informants believe that others view the profession, is described either as polices as the selected model or as prejudiced and hostile. The mass media is regarded the main intermediary of the second image. By the informants, a good police is regarded as being without prejudices and is presented as male. Male strength is one desirable quality, though the strength preferably can be combined with female softness. The care-giving motive is accentuated as the most important one in the first interviews, but replaced by excitement as the most important one in practice. Some general discourses are discussed. The first three - the social, the recruitment, and the distrust discourse - are discussed as sources of understanding to the frequently discussed notion of the police profession as constituting strong team spirit. Police identity is also presented as unprejudiced, male and young in the sense of engagement and activity degree. All discourses are often challenged in work- experience, from cultural as well as from image perspectives. On a highly generalized level the police identity can be positioned as one with a high degree of community. When the stories are scrutinized clearly disparate patterns between individuals however appear. The differences are expressed either in accentuation or definition of the common labels. Earlier research on the fields of identity reveals some shortages. The individual's role in constructing social identities and the pure locus of identity is overlooked. To reduce that shortage, this study introduces a professional identity model where the individual´s position is connected to the common identity by expectations and experiences of three key identity elements -Culture, Image and the Profession itself.

  • Identity construction among boundary-crossing individuals
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 17:3, s. 357-377
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we describe a study of boundary-crossing individuals (individuals who change organisation frequently) and the way they construct identities through interaction and self-reflexion. It is argued from a social constructionist perspective that studies of the way individual identities are constructed are important to our understanding of the complexity of the identity phenomenon. Identities cannot simply be reduced to certain stable institutionalised aspects such as profession or gender. Rather life should be seen as an ongoing process of identity construction, whereby reflexion upon life episodes and the pattern of such episodes shape identities. The results suggest different patterns of articulations through narratives. These narratives are associated with different underlying ontological discourses that describe diverse ways of reasoning among boundary-crossing individuals.

  • Projectification Revisited/Revised
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The original notion of projectification related to organizations and project management was straightforward. Activities formerly regarded or handled as normal matters or routines were transformed to be projects with a specific task associated with each project and a focus on efficiency in terms of time lapse and resources. However, over time the notion has appeared in a wide set of narratives. In this paper we provide examples of narratives intending to pave the way for an academic discussion aiming towards theorizing projectification processes. We include evidence of a need to see beyond the simplistic notions and also allude to meta-theory.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this investigation, the dispersive, transient wave propagation field of a complete violin excited by a mechanically induced impulse at the top of the bridge is presented. By means of double pulsed holographic interferometry with a ruby laser as light source the propagating wave field is recorded. From presented interferograms, it is seen that initially the top plate acts mainly as a nonsymmetric dipole with centers at the two bridge feet. The back plate is strongly coupled to the motion of the top plate by the sound post and acts more like a monopole. Thus the position of the sound post is crucial to the performance of the instrument. The free edges at the f-holes are very early reached by the dispersive bending waves of high amplitude probably giving a significant contribution to the sound of the violin family instruments

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this investigation, the dispersive, transient wave propagation field of the top plate of a complete violin excited by a mechanically induced pulse at the top of the bridge is presented. A similar investigation has previously been made for excitation parallel with the top plate and is now completed with excitation perpendicular to the plate. From presented interferograms, it is seen that the top plate initially deforms in a nonsymmetric two-pole with centers at the two bridge feet. Shortly thereafter the two poles (valleys) are joined into one, but after 0.30 ms the displacement is still nonsymmetric with maximum motion at the bridge foot closest to the excitation point. From the measurements it can be concluded that for excitation parallel with the top plate, the plate between the f-holes acts mainly as a dipole, but with excitation perpendicular the same part acts mainly as a monopole. Thus the excitation of the top plate when playing the violin depends on the angle of the bow in relation to the top plate and should influence the tone character

  • Construction of Transnational Identities? : a study of how multiple international assignments influence individuals' identity processes
  • 2008
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This licentiate thesis examines multiple international assignments from an identity construction perspective, and identification or social identities as part thereof. A distinction is made between repeat expatriates, employed by the same company over several assignments abroad, and international itinerants, who move abroad working for several different companies. The main purpose of this thesis is to increase the understanding of how multiple international assignments influence individuals’ identity construction. This purpose is divided into two broad aspects where this thesis aims to contribute; the identity construction process as such, over multiple international assignments, and the more contextual aspect of social identities and what these individuals identify with. The thesis contains two essays, each with a different focus. The interviews in the first essay are with repeat expatriates and in the second essay international itinerants are in focus. As this is an exploratory study, a narrative approach is applied in order to reach in-depth understanding of a few cases. Brought together the essays contribute with new insights about the implications of multiple international work experiences from an individual’s point of view and illustrate the diversity of implications such a career can have for the individual. As these individuals go through transitions in their social context, experiencing ambiguities and paradoxes, they reflect on who they are and identity construction processes are engaged. This is contextualized in their narratives and they draw on different sources and contexts in their identity construction. Findings also indicate that there can actually be differences in repeat expatriates’ and international itinerants’ identity construction and what they identify with, which is identified as an interesting topic to research further.

  • Global careerists’ identity construction : A narrative study of repeat expatriates and international itinerants
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Research on international work experiences has to a great extent focused on an international assignment as a single event, and on how to optimize it from the organization’s perspective. This thesis addresses individuals’ subjective experiences of international work experiences and focuses on individuals with global careers, who see working abroad as a major element of their careers, involving several international assignments or international work experiences. With the recognition that individuals will work abroad on their own initiative a differentiation is made between repeat expatriates; expatriates with at least two international assignments for the same company, and international itinerants; working abroad for at least two different companies. The main purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of global careers through applying an identity construction perspective on narratives of global careerists’ working lives. To address this purpose the global careerists’ identity construction processes are explored, and their career orientation, their identification with the organization and career, and country and culture are considered more directly. An important sub-purpose of this thesis is to make a comparison of repeat expatriates and international itinerants, in terms of their identity construction and identifications. An individual’s identity, or sense of self, is seen as constructed in social interaction, encompassing dualities such as both differentiation from and identification with others. This thesis addresses social identities as part of an individual’s identity construction in the transition in social, cultural and organizational context that an international work experience involves. The approach taken is that the increased understanding aimed for can be reached through narratives. Interviews were made with twenty Swedish global careerists. Each interview was constructed as a narrative and structured according to elements of narratives to construct aggregate narratives of repeat expatriates and international itinerants. The narratives were analyzed and comparison of repeat expatriates and international itinerants was made. The findings in this thesis show that all the global careerists in this study have experienced shifts in their identities and identity reconstruction in the course of their careers. External circumstances such as the type of location, the time abroad, and if the work abroad is perceived as temporary, is important to the global careerists’ identity construction. The findings illustrate that there are differences in repeat expatriates’ and international itinerants’ career orientations, in their identifications with the organizations they work for, with their careers and with what they do. The two types of global careerists differ in how they identify with their home country and culture and the countries and cultures they live in. The repeat expatriates and international itinerants also show different patterns in their identity construction.

  • Renal denervation attenuates NADPH oxidase-mediated oxidative stress and hypertension in rats with hydronephrosis
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Physiology - Renal Physiology. - : American Physiological Society. - 0363-6127 .- 1522-1466 .- 1931-857X. ; 310:1, s. F43-F56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hydronephrosis is associated with development of salt-sensitive hypertension. Studies suggest that increased sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) and oxidative stress play important roles in renovascular hypertension. This study aimed to investigate the link between renal SNA and NADPH oxidase (NOX) regulation in the development of hypertension in rats with hydronephrosis. Hydronephrosis was induced by partial unilateral ureteral obstruction (PUUO) in young rats. Sham surgery or renal denervation was performed at the same time. Blood pressure was measured during normal, high and low salt diets. Renal excretion pattern, NOX activity and expression, as well as components of RAAS were characterized. On normal salt diet, PUUO rats had elevated blood pressure compared with controls (115±3 vs 87±1 mmHg), and displayed increased urine production and lower urine osmolality. Blood pressure change in response to salt loading (salt-sensitivity) was more pronounced in the PUUO group compared with controls (15±2 vs 5±1mmHg). Renal denervation in PUUO rats attenuated hypertension (97±3mmHg) and salt-sensitivity (5±1mmHg), and normalized renal excretion pattern, whereas the degree of renal fibrosis and inflammation was not changed. NOX activity and expression, as well as renin and AT1A receptor expression, were increased in renal cortex from PUUO rats, and normalized by denervation. Plasma sodium and potassium levels were elevated in PUUO rats and normalized after renal denervation. Denervation in PUUO rats was also associated with reduced NOX expression, superoxide production and fibrosis in the heart. This study emphasizes a link between renal nerves, NOX function, and development of hypertension.

  • Loop Closure Detection Through Environmental Indicators In Underwater SLAM
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A key step in Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) with autonomous robots is the ability to recognize when the vehicle is revisiting an area. The recognition of salient features allows re-localization to a previously visited place, forming a so-called loop closure. Loop closures enable autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to reduce the unbounded navigation drift experienced when mapping unknown terrain. However, the scarcity of recognizable features in unstructured sub-sea environments makes disambiguation of places a challenging problem. In this work we study the application of water analysis sensors mounted on an AUV to construct descriptors of underwater environments. Since these sensors measure very different properties of the areas compared to terrain sensors, these descriptors could increase robustness against perceptual aliasing on place recognition and thus improve loop closure detection in a SLAM framework. We present a method to create and compare these spatial descriptors, test it with several data sets collected with an AUV in two different geographical locations and analyze their potential use for loop closure detection.

  • On structure-borne sound : experiments showing the initial transient acoustic wave field generated by an impacted plate
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. - : Acoustical Society of America (ASA). - 0001-4966 .- 1520-8524. ; 96:5, s. 2791-2797
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The initial propagating transient acoustic field in air generated by an impacted plate is visualized. The transient traveling flexural waves in the plate created by the impact are shown, simultaneously. The experiments are performed using double pulsed holographic interferometry. It is shown that flexural waves in a plate act as a series of traveling acoustic sources. Since the flexural waves in the plate are dispersive the trace matched acoustical waves further away from the impact source propagate at a smaller angle relative to the plate than those closer to the impact. An observer situated close to the plate and away from the impact point will first receive high-frequency components of the sound. A quantitative evaluation of the acoustic field also shows that if there is a transient increase in pressure on one side of the plate there will be a similar decrease on the other side.

  • Wave propagation in plates studied by pulsed hologram interferometry
  • 1989
  • Ingår i: The Sixth Meeting in Israel on Optical Engineering. - Bellingham, Wash : SPIE - International Society for Optical Engineering. ; , s. 146-53
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Isotropic and non-isotropic plates are impacted by a ballistic pendulum. The bending waves that are generated are studied with holographic interferometry using a double pulsed ruby laser as light source. The pulse shape changes with time because of the dispersivity of the waves. Initially the fringe pattern in the isotropic case is cylindrically symmetric and determined from an initial value problem. Later, when the waves have reached the plate rim, in- and outgoing waves gradually develop fringe patterns which in the end will be a combination of eigenmodes of the plate. A solution to the corresponding Kirchhoff plate equation is presented, which in the special case when the impact is modelled as a Dirac-pulse in space and time, is shown to depend only of the distance to the impact point divided by the square root of the time after impact and a parameter containing plate parameters. From the slope of the central deflection material parameters can be determined. Another solution, assuming a finite impact time, is shown to agree better with experiments. Results from investigations of non-isotropic materials are also presented.
