  • Knowing and the Art of IT Management. An inquiry into work practices in one-stop shops
  • 1998
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • New information technology is developing faster than the models, metaphors and methods in use for conceptualizing the sharing and managing of information in organizations, in communities and in society in general. The way we utilize information technology today does not seem to succeed in supporting the everyday work practices through which organizations accomplish their work. In this Ph.D. dissertation, the results of a research project about skill, cooperation and computer support in public service one-stop shops are presented and discussed. Based on these results, alternative metaphors are presented for understanding the constructive aspects of front office work practices. One hypothesis is, that there is added value in not only being aware of multiperspectivity as an issue, but of making use of it in design. A problem here is that many traditional research methods, as well as most methods for systems development, are designed to diminish rather than make use of ambiguity and diversity. The metaphor of inverted indexicality of language is introduced in order to conceptualize the construction of meaning in action. New ways of conceptualizing IT management for the shop floor - including design issues - are proposed. Metaphors like 'the art of IT management', 'gardening' and 'caring for' are indicative of the issues at stake.

  • Using autonomous agents in Internet marketing : A discussion on subjective product characteristics in agent assisted trade
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Technologies for the Information Society. - Amsterdam : IOS Press. - 90 5199 450 8 - 4 274 90251 ; , s. 225-232
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An important issue in Internet marketing is the possibility of designing autonomous agents that are able to interpret subjective values in goods and services. From the customer's point of view, it is important to evaluate all aspects linked to the product before purchasing, not only easily identified objective parameters such as price. From a marketing perspective, the building of a brand is probably the most efficient way to distinguish a product from those of the competitors. It is therefore important for both customers and marketers to design agents that are able to interpret certain subjective product characteristics when searching for products or services on the Internet. This paper outlines a generic model of an autonomous agent Internet marketing system with a discussion on the possibilities of handling subjective product characteristics.

  • Shopping Web-shopping Web-shop Web-selling Selling Teaching Software Development together with Work Practice Studies
  • 1999
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article I want to share the experiences of developing an interdisciplinary course which brings together design oriented work practice studies and software development. The development and the teaching of this course took place as part of the study program 'People, Computers, and Work' bringing together human work science and computer science. To relate work practice studies and software development in a fruitful way, we had to change not only the organization of the projects and the layout of the course. It required also relating paradigms and methods on both sides. The teachers had to learn about each other's disciplines, too. An example of one of the projects - a web-shop for stationary - illustrates the way the students worked. Us teachers learned also a lot: Both ethnographic methods to study the workplace and software development methods change if really brought together. The variety of ways of relating work practice studies to software development surprised us. We explored common themes relevant for the interdisciplinary practice. And we learned a lot about how to teach this kind of projects.

  • Mobility in the wild social aspects of mobile work : a framework for further research and design
  • 1999
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We report ongoing research in search of characteristics of mobile work and use of mobile ICT (information and communication technologies) to support such work. Based on an empirical investigation of the work of mobile service technicians at Telia Nära, we outline five areas of social interaction where mobility changes fundamental aspects of the work.

  • Developing a Language for Participation. Project Language as a Meeting Place for Users and Developers in Participatory Software Development
  • 1998
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During participatory development different professional groups with different professional languages meet. They have to communicate about the future software in a profound way. To enable that, a common way to talk about the future software has to be developed, relating concepts of the use context and concepts of software development. An example of the development of such a project language is given and the relevance of this for design is argued for. To support the development of a project language a toolkit is provided in which methods are compiled that respects the creative side of ordinary language.

  • How to make Sense of Software. Interpretability as an Issue for Design.
  • 1998
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the context of CSCW ? especially through ethnomethodological work place studies - the stability of particular work practices and therefore the ability to design software that fits with continually evolving work practices is questioned. This challenge for software development has been called 'design for unanticipated use'. Using the concept of interpretability, I attempt to answer this challenge. A semiotic perspective on computer applications as formal symbol manipulation systems is introduced. A case study involving three alternative ways of using a computer application shows how users make sense of such symbolic machines. Wittgenstein's concept of language games is used as a 'figure of thought' to relate practice, language, and the use of symbolic machines. The development of an interpretation, fitting the implemented symbol manipulation and supporting the specific understanding of the task, remains crucial for competent use. Interpretability is introduced as a quality of computer applications. In order how to support the user in developing her own interpretation, a concept for help systems is described.

  • Software Engineering Across Boundaries : Student Project in Distributed Collaboration
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication. - : IEEE. - 0361-1434 .- 1558-1500. ; 42:4, s. 286-296
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Geographically distributed software development projects have been made possible by rapid developments primarily within the data communication area. A number of companies recognize that distributed sollaboration has great potential for the near future. This report describes the empirical study of a cooperative student project located at two different geographical sites. The project was carried out at two universities, one in Sweden and one in finland. The initial goals were to give the students the opportunity to learn about the practical aspects of cooperation between two geographically seperate institutions and to study specific problems anticipated by the teachers with regard to communication, coordination, language, culture, requirements' handling, testing, and bug fixing. This report focuses on communication and coordination within the cooperative project as these were identified as the most significant problem areas. We also thought that these areas were the most interesting and the ones most likely to lead to improvements. This report not only describes our findings but also gives hints about what to think about when running similar projects both with respect to project related issues and teaching issues.

  • Designing Future Interaction with Today's Technology
  • 1999
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Information Technology has an increasing part of our lives. In this thesis we will discuss how technology can relate to humans and human activity. We take our standing point in concepts like Calm Technology and Tacit Interaction and examine how these visions and concepts can be used in the process of designing an artifact for a real work practice. We have done work-place studies of truck-drivers and traffic leaders regarding how they find their way to the right addresses and design a truck navigation system that aims to suit the truck drivers work practice.

  • Understanding Alarms. A first step in the development of a new alarm system.
  • 1999
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes a project aiming at developing a new alarm system for the dialysis department in Karlskrona, Sweden. We?ll present the approach we used in order to understand how the alarms was perceived and how the alarms influenced the nurses work practice. Our understanding of the alarm was used as a basis for the design process of creating a new alarm system together with the nurses. The alarm system we will present should not be thought of as the final system to be implemented, but rather as being used for further discussion about how to deal with alarms. The main audience for this paper are those who are interested in what you can learn from a narrow analysis of technology (alarms) in use and how an alarm might effect the way people act. Although we talk about design, that is not the key issue.

  • Moving document collections online : The evolution of a shared repository
  • 1999
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports on a work-oriented design project concerned with the question of how to migrate shared, workgroup document collections currently kept on paper online. Based in a civil engineering workgroup, the focus of our project is a document collection called the “project files”, a heterogeneous mix of documents that serve as an ongoing resource for the group during a project's course as well as an archival record at its completion. We describe the dynamics of the standardized classification scheme in use for the project files, existing practices of document filing including routine troubles, and the prototype developed to move the project files online. The latter includes a configuration of hardware and software along with associated practices of document scanning, coding and search. We conclude with some reflections on the difficulties of maintaining alignment across paper and digital media in the migration to online document collections, and with a summary of the questions posed and answers provided by our project.
