- This paper will discuss the future use of the dwelling as a place for cooperative work. It is our opinion that the development of the communication technologies and the architectural design has to be treated in parallel when we discuss new forms of living and work habits. Our analysis is built on a theoretical framework that is reflected through earlier experiences in IT technology in domestic environments as well as field studies of computer-mediated communication. By taking into consideration both architectural and communication technology issues we have developed a framework of how these two areas could fruitfully meet in new design concepts. Some of these concepts are now being used in on-going projects where new forms of communication in domestic environments are studied.

- This document has been created as an aid in the development of strategies for taking Chalmers University of Technology into the 21st century. It is a working document, the purpose of which is to provide input for the design and prioritization of our development activities. In this respect, it has already contributed to our work, both at the school/department levels and at the university as a whole.It is not meant to be a “final report”, but rather to remain a work in process. Each section reflects the strongest impressions made on the person responsible for that section. As a result, some overlap can be found between sections, as it can be essential to review these impressions from different perspectives. The intention has been to cover all subject areas; at the same time retaining the flavor of the individual or group contributions. In 1996, an exchange of experiences and ideas was initiated between the deans of the Schools of Architecture (A), Electrical and Computer Engineering (ED), Chemical Engineering (K) and Technology Management and Economics (I) and the President of Chalmers, concerning the strategic development of Chalmers and its schools. During these meetings, the need for an analysis of current developments in the world was recognized, aiming at improved positions for the individual schools as well as for Chalmers as a whole.In 1997, a trip to the USA was planned, the purpose of which was to harvest ideas and learn from the following prominent American universities: The Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta (“Georgia Tech”, a state university that has climbed up the American ranking lists during the last decade), Motorola University in Schaumburg (a company “university”, an increasingly common phenomenon among major American companies), Northwestern University in Chicago (a private national university that has placed high on the ranking lists for an extended period of time), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.(the oldest university of technology in the USA-private), the University of Massachusetts Lowell (“UMass”- a regional state university that has undergone major transformation) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT- the leading private national university of technology in the United States).The basic idea was for several individuals from each school to be involved (a total of some 22 persons), since the knowledge and experience gained from the trip was to be put into practice. During the autumn of 1997, we therefore divided into four working groups responsible for: 1) development and leadership, 2) cooperation and focus in research and research education, 3) external and internal relations and 4) information technology in education. The different schools were represented in all groups and were assigned to prepare questions within their respective areas of responsibility.We visited the six universities between March 25 and April 5, 1998, and the four working groups were expected to cover the issues they had prepared. Three of the trip’s days were earmarked for exchange of experience and reflection, i.e. the groups described the most interesting or thought-provoking features, suggested which elements might be put to use at Chalmers, and presented these reflections to the other participants.After returning to Sweden, the groups have kept working on their analyses. Using notes from interviews and printed material, the groups have written reports on their observations and what they have learned in the United States. In these analyses, the groups’ learnings are related to the present reality and recommendations for the future at Chalmers. These reports were presented to the Board of Chalmers on June 4 1998, and have now been compiled in this document.

- This report presents an evaluation of the local development work in the housing area Araby in Växjö. Araby is a large-scale housing area with about 4900 inhabitants (1995). The municipal government of Växjö decided in 1996 to begin a local development work in Araby. The evaluation aims to describe the local development work regarding: 1. How the interplay between local, municipality and housing company actors has worked 2. How local initiatives to development has been supported by municipal physical planning 3. How the collabotation within the municipality and between the municipality officials and other actors has worked 4. How civil ascendancy has come to expression and 5. How new forms of physical planning has been used.

- Sedan slutet av 1800-talet har det varit den socialt engagerade samhällsplanerarens uppgift att ordna goda bostäder, fungerande kommunikationer och sunda levnadsförhållanden. Under sjuttio- och åttiotalen fanns en särskild stor tilltro till att man kunde planera bort svåra samhällsproblem som fattigdom och segregation i förorterna och istället skapa gemenskap och jämlikhet mellan människor. Denna bok berättar om varför det inte lyckades. Författarna har under flera år ingående studerat socialt inriktade och ambitiöst planerade lokala försök att förbättra människors välfärd. Det är historier om marknadskrafternas intåg i den svenska politiken och hur siktet vänds från sociala mål till näraliggande ekonomiska. Men det är också berättelser om hur intressekonflikter, okunskap och snabba ideologiska skiften skapar nya problem snabbare än de gamla hinner redas ut. Allvarlig kritik riktas mot dem begränsade förmågan hos kommunala institutioner att värna om människors trygghet

Råslätt. Igår-idag-imorgon. En retrospektiv studie i ett storskaligt miljonprogramsområde

- En solig aprildag 1973 besökte jag för första gången förortsområdet Råslätt i Jönköping. Besöken har därefter varit otaliga liksom kontakterna med olika grupper av Råslättsbor och Råslättsverksamma. I närmare åtta år efter detta, mitt första besök, hade jag en kontinuerlig och fortlöpande kontakt, dels genom mitt avhandlingsarbete, dels som projektsekreterare i Bostadssociala delegationens för-söksverksamhet i området, dels genom ett utredningsuppdrag för fritidsförvaltningen i Jönköpings kommun. Därefter gick det 7 år innan jag en gråmulen septemberdag 1988 ånyå besökte Råslätt. Det var vid det tillfället, som idén väcktes att vända åter för att i en retrospektiv studie beskriva och analysera det arbetsätt som utvecklats på lokal områdesnivå och som de, som jag sammanträffade med, uppfat-tade som så positivt för utvecklingen i området. Av olika skäl skulle det dock dröja ytterligare drygt fyra år innan idén från 1988 kunde omsättas i ett konkret forskningsarbete. Under de senaste två åren har så Råslätts utveckling ånyå upptagit mitt intresse. Resultatet av detta arbete finns redovisat i denna rapport, där Råslätts historia är tecksnad alltsedan de första besluten fattades att exploatera Råslätts Gård för bostadsbebyggelse. Men den nu föreliggande rapporten visar också att 80-talets positiva utvecklingsspiral har brutits. Hos mig som forskare väcker det frågor kring välfärdsuppbyggnad och bostadssociala kvaliteter, om strukturellt betingad arbetslöshet och etnisk segregering. Även i fortsättningen kommer därför Råslätt att vara en följeslagare i mitt forskningsarbete. Jag kommer ånya att intervjua de som bor och de som arbetar i området och som alltid välvilligt ställt sin tid till mitt förfogande. Ett varmt tack till Er alla, som hjälpt mig att genomföra mitt forskningsarbete!

Till stadsbornas nytta och förlustande : Den offentliga parken i Sverige under 1800-talet

- The aim of this dissertation is to study the public parks in Sweden during the nineteenth century. It focuses on three general factors – decision process, design, and function – and is to a great extent based on previously unstudied material including town councils' minutes, drawings, and other contemporary sources. The dissertation considers a selection of the approximately one hundred public parks laid out in Sweden during the period.From the beginning of the century the middle classes endeavoured to create meeting places and social customs of their own, and public parks had a role to play in their efforts. There, families could spend their leisure time together, meeting acquaintances and amusing themselves. The park was also an aesthetic element in the townscape. The study shows that the first public parks appeared in the 1820s, and that they were established several decades earlier than is generally acknowledged. During the decades following 1860, a large number of new parks were made. From now on, moral considerations began being put forward as grounds for creating public parks. They were promoted as more suitable social settings than the streets, squares, and pubs – for the middle classes as well as for the workers. In the 1890s, new parks were made whose design and function differed distinctly from their predecessors. They were planned for active use to a much greater extent, with features such as games and sport, and all surfaces open to the public. The study also shows that town councils from the beginning of the century were involved in creating the parks, and generally assumed full economic responsibility.Concerning the design, the parks changed during the century. From the initial decades, the essential design assumption was that parks would be perceived as art rather than nature. It should be obvious that the trees, bushes, and flowers did not grow natural on the spot, an impression emphasised by their varied colours, shapes, and ways of growing. Exotic plants were used extensively. From around 1870 the attempt to imitate nature as closely as possible, often using an existing natural area as a starting point and employing indigenous plants, gradually became common.Previous studies have often pointed to the public parks' role in improving the hygiene in the towns, locating them within an overall town planning perspective. However, the study shows that the belief that they might also improve the moral and general living conditions of urban dwellers has been an even more important factor. The park was envisaged as a place of education and general cultivation, but also as a place for amusement, which was reflected in the bandstands, monuments, and playgrounds, etc. Though the parks were often smaller than their counterparts abroad, Sweden was in step with the rest of Europe.
