  • QPO as the Rosetta Stone for understanding black hole accretion
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Astronomische Nachrichten. - : Wiley. - 0004-6337 .- 1521-3994. ; 326:9, s. 782-786
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) seen in the X-ray fluxes of individual neutron stars and black hole sources are one of most intriguing phenomena in today's astrophysics. The QPO nature is visibly determined by super-strong Einstein's gravity. I argue here that it also profoundly depends on the MRI turbulence in accretion flows. Understanding the QPO physics may therefore guide accretion theory out of its present state of confusion. Readers will find here an up-to-date, comprehensible account of what is known, and what is not, about the QPO physics.

  • The correlations and anticorrelations in QPO data
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Astronomische Nachrichten. - : Wiley. - 0004-6337 .- 1521-3994. ; 326:9, s. 864-866
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Double peak kHz QPO frequencies in neutron star sources varies in time by a factor of hundreds Hz while in microquasar sources the frequencies are fixed and located at the line ν2 - ν1 in the frequency-frequency plot. The crucial question in the theory of twin HFQPOs is whether or not those observed in neutron-star systems are essentially different from those observed in black holes. In black hole systems the twin HFQPOs are known to be in a 3:2 ratio for each source. At first sight, this seems not to be the case for neutron stars. For each individual neutron star, the upper and lower kHz QPO frequencies, ν2 and ν1, are linearly correlated, ν2 = ν1 + B, with the slope A < 1.5, i.e., the frequencies definitely are not in a 1.5 ratio. In this contribution we show that when considered jointly on a frequency-frequency plot, the data for the twin kHz QPO frequencies in several (as opposed to one) neutron stars uniquely pick out a certain preferred frequency ratio that is equal to 1.5 for the six sources examined so far.

  • Status of the physics of substellar objects project
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Astronomical Notes - Astronomische Nachrichten. - : Wiley. - 0004-6337. ; 326:10, s. 920-924
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A full understanding of the properties of substellar objects is one of the major challenges facing astrophysics. Since their discovery in 1995, hundreds of brown dwarfs and extrasolar planets have been discovered. While these discoveries have enabled important comparisons with theory, observational progress has been much more rapid than the theoretical understanding of cool atmospheres. The reliable determination of mass, abundances, gravities and temperatures is not yet possible. The key problem is that substellar objects emit their observable radiation in the infrared region of the spectrum where our knowledge of atomic, molecular and line broadening data is poor. Here we report on the status of our PoSSO (Physics of SubStellar Objects) project. In order to understand brown dwarfs and extrasolar planets increasing more like those in our solar system, we are studying a wide range of processes. Here we give an update on the project and sketch an outline of atoms, molecules and processes requiring study.

  • Turbulent stresses as a function of shear rate in a local disk model
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Astronomical Notes - Astronomische Nachrichten. - : Wiley. - 0004-6337 .- 1521-3994. ; 330:1, s. 92-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • WC Present local numerical models of accretion disk turbulence driven by the magnetorotational instability with varying shear rate. The resulting turbulent stresses are compared with predictions of a closure model in which triple correlations are modelled in terms of quadratic correlations. This local model uses live nondimensional parameters to describe the properties of the flow. We attempt to determine these Closure parameters for our simulations and find that the model does produce qualitatively correct behaviour. In addition, we present results concerning the shear rate dependency of the magnetic to kinetic energy ratio. We find both the turbulent stress ratio and the total stress to be strongly dependent on the shear rate.

  • Future investigations of GPS and CSS radio sources with LOFAR
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Astronomische Nachrichten. - : Wiley. - 0004-6337 .- 1521-3994. ; 330:2-3, s. 297-300
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the next few years, the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) will open up one of the last astronomically unexplored wavelength regimes. While the LOFAR core is currently being erected in the Netherlands, its outer stations will cover a large part of Europe, resulting in an unprecedented angular resolution at > meter wavelengths. Next to many other exciting scientific endeavours, LOFAR will be the first instrument to probe the low frequency spectra of Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) and Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) radio sources. It will give new insights into their absorption processes, and probe associated extended emission (possibly linked to earlier epochs of activity) in these enigmatic class of young active galactic nuclei. Furthermore, LOFAR will be sensitive to possibly the most distant GPS and CSS sources, of which their spectral turnovers have redshifted down to the lowest observable radio frequencies.

  • Correcting second-order contamination in low-resolution spectra
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Astronomical Notes - Astronomische Nachrichten. - : Wiley. - 0004-6337 .- 1521-3994. ; 328:9, s. 948-952
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An empirical method for correcting low-resolution astronomical spectra for second-order contamination is presented. The method was developed for correcting spectra obtained with grism#4 of the ALFOSC spectrograph at the Nordic Optical Telescope and the performance is demonstrated on spectra of two nearby bright Type la supernovae.

  • Shear-driven magnetic buoyancy oscillations
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Astronomische Nachrichten. - : Wiley. - 0004-6337 .- 1521-3994. ; 330:8, s. 797-806
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of uniform horizontal shear on a stably stratified layer of gas is studied. The system is initially destabilized by a magnetically buoyant flux tube pointing in the cross-stream direction. The shear amplifies the initial field to Lundquist numbers of about 200-400, but then its value drops to about 100-300, depending on the value of the sub-adiabatic gradient. The larger values correspond to cases where the stratification is strongly stable and nearly isothermal. At the end of the runs the magnetic field is nearly axisymmetric, i.e. uniform in the streamwise direction. In view of Cowling's theorem the sustainment of the field remains a puzzle and may be due to subtle numerical effects that have not yet been identified in detail. In the final state the strength of the magnetic field decreases with height in such a way that the field is expected to be unstable. Low amplitude oscillations are seen in the vertical velocity even at late times, suggesting that they might be persistent.
