  • Kinetic theory for spin-1/2 particles in ultrastrong magnetic fields
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 102:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When the Zecman energy approaches the characteristic kinetic energy of electrons, Landau quantization becomes important. In the vicinity of magnetars, the Zeeman energy can even be relativistic. We start from the Dirac equation and derive a kinetic equation for electrons, focusing on the phenomenon of Landau quantization in such ultrastrong but constant magnetic fields, neglecting short-scale quantum phenomena. It turns out that the usual relativistic gamma factor of the Vlasov equation is replaced by an energy operator, depending on the spin state, and also containing momentum derivatives. Furthermore, we show that the energy eigenstates in a magnetic field can be computed as eigenfunctions of this operator. The dispersion relation for electrostatic waves in a plasma is computed, and the significance of our results is discussed.

  • Newton-Cartan submanifolds and fluid membranes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 101:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We develop the geometric description of submanifolds in Newton-Cartan spacetime. This provides the necessary starting point for a covariant spacetime formulation of Galilean-invariant hydrodynamics on curved surfaces. We argue that this is the natural geometrical framework to study fluid membranes in thermal equilibrium and their dynamics out of equilibrium. A simple model of fluid membranes that only depends on the surface tension is presented and, extracting the resulting stresses, we show that perturbations away from equilibrium yield the standard result for the dispersion of elastic waves. We also find a generalization of the Canham-Helfrich bending energy for lipid vesicles that takes into account the requirements of thermal equilibrium.

  • Frohlich-coupled qubits interacting with fermionic baths
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 102:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider a quantum system such as a qubit, interacting with a bath of fermions as in the Frohlich polaron model. The interaction Hamiltonian is thus linear in the system variable and quadratic in the fermions. Using the recently developed extension of Feynman-Vernon theory to nonharmonic baths we evaluate quadratic and the quartic terms in the influence action. We find that for this model the quartic term vanish by symmetry arguments. Although the influence of the bath on the system is of the same form as from bosonic harmonic oscillators up to effects to sixth order in the system-bath interaction, the temperature dependence is nevertheless rather different, unless rather contrived models are considered.

  • Corrections to reaction-diffusion dynamics above the upper critical dimension
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 105:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reaction-diffusion models are common in many areas of statistical physics, where they describe the late-time dynamics of chemical reactions. Using a Bose gas representation, which maps the real-time dynamics of the reactants to the imaginary-time evolution of an interacting Bose gas, we consider corrections to the late-time scaling of $k$-particle annihilation processes $k A \to \emptyset$ above the upper critical dimension, where mean-field theory sets the leading order. We establish that the leading corrections are not given by a small renormalization of the reaction rate due to $k$-particle memory effects, but instead set by higher-order correlation functions that capture memory effects of sub-clusters of reactants. Drawing on methods developed for ultracold quantum gases and nuclear physics, we compute these corrections exactly for various annihilation processes with $k>2$.

  • Dynamics of multiple interacting excitatory and inhibitory populations with delays
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 102:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A network consisting of excitatory and inhibitory (EI) neurons is a canonical model for understanding local cortical network activity. In this study, we extended the local circuit model and investigated how its dynamical landscape can be enriched when it interacts with another excitatory (E) population with long transmission delays. Through analysis of a rate model and numerical simulations of a corresponding network of spiking neurons, we studied the transition from stationary to oscillatory states by analyzing the Hopf bifurcation structure in terms of two network parameters: (1) transmission delay between the EI subnetwork and the E population and (2) inhibitory couplings that induced oscillatory activity in the EI subnetwork. We found that the critical coupling strength can strongly modulate as a function of transmission delay, and consequently the stationary state can be interwoven intricately with the oscillatory state. Such a dynamical landscape gave rise to an isolated stationary state surrounded by multiple oscillatory states that generated different frequency modes, and cross-frequency coupling developed naturally at the bifurcation points. We identified the network motifs with short-and long-range inhibitory connections that underlie the emergence of oscillatory states with multiple frequencies. Thus, we provided a mechanistic explanation of how the transmission delay to and from the additional E population altered the dynamical landscape. In summary, our results demonstrated the potential role of long-range connections in shaping the network activity of local cortical circuits.

  • Hearing Euler characteristic of graphs
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 101:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Euler characteristic chi = vertical bar V vertical bar - vertical bar E vertical bar and the total length L are the most important topological and geometrical characteristics of a metric graph. Here vertical bar V vertical bar and vertical bar E vertical bar denote the number of vertices and edges of a graph. The Euler characteristic determines the number beta of independent cycles in a graph while the total length determines the asymptotic behavior of the energy eigenvalues via Weyl's law. We show theoretically and confirm experimentally that the Euler characteristic can be determined (heard) from a finite sequence of the lowest eigenenergies lambda(1 ), ..., lambda(N) of a simple quantum graph, without any need to inspect the system visually. In the experiment quantum graphs are simulated by microwave networks. We demonstrate that the sequence of the lowest resonances of microwave networks with beta <= 3 can be directly used in determining whether a network is planar, i.e., can be embedded in the plane. Moreover, we show that the measured Euler characteristic chi can be used as a sensitive revealer of the fully connected graphs.

  • Fluctuation corrections to Lifshitz tails in disordered systems
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 109
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quenched disorder in semiconductors induces localized electronic states at the band edge, which manifest as an exponential tail in the density of states. For large impurity densities, this tail takes a universal Lifshitz form that is characterized by short-ranged potential fluctuations. We provide both analytical expressions and numerical values for the Lifshitz tail of a parabolic conduction band including its exact fluctuation prefactor. Our analysis is based on a replica field integral approach, where the leading exponential scaling of the tail is determined by an instanton profile and fluctuations around the instanton determine the subleading preexponential factor. This factor contains the determinant of a fluctuation operator, and we avoid a full computation of its spectrum by using a Gel'fand-Yaglom formalism, which provides a concise general derivation of fluctuation corrections in disorder problems. We provide a revised result for the disorder band tail in two dimensions.

  • Inferring genetic fitness from genomic data
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 101:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The genetic composition of a naturally developing population is considered as due to mutation, selection, genetic drift, and recombination. Selection is modeled as single-locus terms (additive fitness) and two-loci terms (pairwise epistatic fitness). The problem is posed to infer epistatic fitness from population-wide whole-genome data from a time series of a developing population. We generate such data in silico and show that in the quasilinkage equilibrium phase of Kimura, Neher, and Shraiman, which pertains at high enough recombination rates and low enough mutation rates, epistatic fitness can be quantitatively correctly inferred using inverse Ising-Potts methods.

  • Optical Bloch modeling of femtosecond-laser-induced electron dynamics in dielectrics
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. - 1539-3755. ; 101:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A model based on optical Bloch equations is developed to describe the interaction of femtosecond laser pulses with dielectric solids, accounting for optical-cycle-resolved electron dynamics. It includes the main physical processes at play: photoionization, impact ionization, direct and collisional laser heating, and recombination. By using an electron band structure, this approach also accounts for material optical properties as nonlinear polarization response. Various studies are performed, shedding light on the contribution of various processes to the full electron dynamics depending on laser intensity and wavelength. In particular, the standard influence of the impact ionization process is retrieved.

  • Mapping flows on sparse networks with missing links
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical review. E. - : American Physical Society. - 2470-0045 .- 2470-0053 .- 1539-3755. ; 102:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Unreliable network data can cause community-detection methods to overfit and highlight spurious structures with misleading information about the organization and function of complex systems. Here we show how to detect significant flow-based communities in sparse networks with missing links using the map equation. Since the map equation builds on Shannon entropy estimation, it assumes complete data such that analyzing undersampled networks can lead to overfitting. To overcome this problem, we incorporate a Bayesian approach with assumptions about network uncertainties into the map equation framework. Results in both synthetic and real-world networks show that the Bayesian estimate of the map equation provides a principled approach to revealing significant structures in undersampled networks.
