  • The contemporary distribution of cations between bleached softwood fibres and the suspension liquid, as a function of -log[H+], ionic strength and temperature
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal. - 0283-2631. ; 16:1, s. 24-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The distribution of combinations of metal ions between a water volume confined to the fully bleached softwood kraft fibre (i.e. the Donnan volume) and the surrounding water volume was studied at 25 degreesC and 90 degreesC. Three metal ion systems were studied Na+- K+- Mg2+- Ca2+, Na+- Cu2+ and Na+- Al3+, as series of batch experiments in the -log[H+] range 2-9, and in all cases the contemporary metal ion distributions could be predicted by the Donnan ion exchange theory. To enable the Donnan modelling at elevated temperature, the acid/base properties of the fully bleached softwood fibre were determined at 70 degreesC and 90 degreesC. These measurements were performed as series of potentiometric titrations at a constant ionic strength of 100 mM Na(Cl). Data were collected between -log[H+] 2 and 6, above which unstable readings were recorded. At both temperatures, one single equilibrium reaction, drop COOH reversible arrow drop COO-+H+, with an intrinsic dissociation constant and a specific capacitance value, was sufficient to model data. Using the van't Hoffs equation, the enthalpy for the acid/base reaction of the Fibre material was estimated to -3kJ . mol(-1). This value is very similar to literature values for monocarboxylic acids

  • Antibody response to dietary and autoantigens in G alpha i2-deficient mice.
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: European journal of gastroenterology & hepatology. - 0954-691X. ; 13:12, s. 1421-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mice with a targeted mutation in the G protein subunit G alpha i2 gene develop a colonic mucosal inflammation, with a highly activated B-cell response. We wanted to investigate whether this increased B-cell activity was directed against dietary antigens and/or various self tissues.

  • Surface precipitation of MgCO3 on MnCO3 in aqueous solution at 90 degrees C
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal. - 0283-2631. ; 16:4, s. 339-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Data presented in this work are used to suggest that after oxygen delignification, Mg(II) and Mn(II) are present in kraft pulps as carbonate solids, where the Mn(II)CO,(s) is coated by a layer of MgCO3(s). This can explain the role of Mg(II) as a redox stabiliser for Mn(II) in situations where hydroxide phases are thermodynamically unstable but where metal carbonates could form. The coating of MnCO3(s) by MgCO3;(s) has been studied with aqueous Mg(II):Mn(II) molar ratios ranging from 1:3 to 31:1 and at a temperature of 90(degrees)C. The formation of the various precipitates has been characterised by means of optical and energy dispersive SEM, x-ray powder diffractometry and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. To ascertain the inertness of the Mg(II)-coated Mn(II) carbonate particles, hydrogen peroxide stability tests were performed. The results showed that particles generated from Mg(II):Mn(II)-solutions of a molar ratio of l or above were significantly less active against the hydrogen peroxide in alkaline solutions. To prove that this mechanism also occurs under mill conditions, it is shown in the article that the corresponding type of particles can be precipitated from an oxygen-stage filtrate, i.e. a solution rich in carbonate ions and dissolved organic material. Potentiometric measurements have been applied with a setup that allows for titration and oxygen-free sampling at temperatures of up to 90degreesC. The free metal concentrations were analysed using the ICP-OES method. These data were used to thermodynamically characterise the solids forming and they gave, in contrast to the corresponding hydroxide system previously studied, no support for the formation of a solid (Mg,Mn-l,)CO3(s) solution.

  • Immune activation in the intestinal mucosa before the onset of colitis in Galphai2-deficient mice.
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian journal of immunology. - 0300-9475. ; 52:1, s. 80-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • G-protein subunit Galphai2-deficient mice spontaneously develop an inflammatory bowel disease that clinically and histopathologically resembles ulcerative colitis in humans. The aim of this study was to determine whether immunological changes precede the development of colitis in Galphai2-deficient mice. Therefore, Galphai2-deficient mice with no clinical or histopathological signs of colitis were compared with Galphai2-deficient mice with established colitis and wild-type animals, concerning immunological parameters. Healthy Galphai2-deficient mice displayed an increased frequency of CD4+ T cells and a decreased frequency of CD19+ B lymphocytes in the intestinal mucosa compared with control mice. The CD4+ population was characterized by a memory phenotype, i.e. increased expression of CD44 and decreased expression of CD45RB and CD62L, as well as increased expression of the mucosal homing receptors integrins alpha4beta7 and alphaEbeta7. Production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, interleukin (IL)-1beta and interferon (IFN)-gamma, were increased in Galphai2-deficient mice before clinical signs of disease were evident. In addition, total immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgA levels in large intestinal secretions were increased significantly compared with wild-type mice, and antibodies specific for the normal intestinal flora in large intestinal secretions were present in Galphai2-deficient mice several weeks before the onset of colitis. In contrast, antibodies against tropomyosin, a putative autoantigen in human ulcerative colitis, were not found in Galphai2-deficient mice before the onset of colitis, although they were present in animals with established disease. In conclusion, activation of the intestinal immune system precedes histopathological and clinical signs of inflammation in Galphai2-deficient mice, suggesting that immune abnormalities play an important role in the induction of colitis.

  • Catalyst preparation through ion-exchange of zeolite Cu-, Ni-, Pd-, CuNi- and CuPd-ZSM-5
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Materials Chemistry and Physics. - 0254-0584 .- 1879-3312. ; 73:2-3, s. 263-267
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ion-exchanged zeolite ZSM-5 is the best known catalyst for direct NOx decomposition and a viable candidate for NOx reduction with methane. The preparation is crucial for the efficiency of the conversion and this paper describes the ion-exchange, with Cu2+, Ni2+ or Pd2+, and the dual exchange, with Cu2+/Ni2+ or Cu2+/Pd2+, under appropriate pH and ion concentrations for maximum dispersion.
