  • Designing and Assessing Learning in Venture Creation Programs - Winner of Best Practitioner Development Workshop Award
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Workshop Summary In Venture Creation Programs the venture acts as a ‘learning vessel’, enabling what students need to learn - and more - given a greater or lesser extent of guidance. But how do we ensure that the students are engaging in ‘doing what they need to do’ in order to ‘learn what they need to learn’? In this workshop, participants will benchmark and crowdsource to identify and develop teaching tool prototypes for venture creation programs. Each ‘teaching tool’ consist of a learning objective, a combination of learning activities and an assessment suggestion. The workshop consists of two steps: the first is to capture learning activities from the entire group; then we divide into smaller groups where we develop them further into teaching tools. The teaching tools can later be used by the participants in their home university in order to package integrated venture activities so that the activities become aligned to the learning objectives.

  • Exploring the roles of university spin-offs in business networks
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 59, s. 157-166
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper identifies different university spin-off (USO) roles related to resource interaction among business parties. It does so by mapping how USOs become part of business networks in terms of their roles relative to other parties. The theoretical frame of reference focuses on roles and resource interaction based on an industrial network approach to business markets. The empirical research is based on five cases of USOs representing a variety in terms of technology, degree of newness, sector, and area of application. As a result of the analysis, three different roles are identified: the USO as resource mediator, resource re-combiner and resource renewer. These roles reflect how USOs adapt resources to, or require changes among, business parties' resources. The paper also discusses the main resource interfaces associated with the three roles and related challenges. The paper contributes to previous research through illustrating USOs' roles relative to business parties from a resource interaction point of view, and by pointing to the establishment of new companies in business networks as a way of implementing innovation. Finally, the paper discusses the managerial implications of the research in terms of the USO's need to understand which role to take and how to develop it.

  • Technology Transfer Offices, Incubators, and Intellectual Property Management
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 76th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we present a systematic literature review of the intersection between intellectual property (IP) management, technology transfer offices (TTOs) and incubators (and to some degree also science parks) in order to find out how incubators and/or TTOs support and work with patenting and IP management in startups. IP management is an important issue for the competitiveness of technology based startups and a difficult issue due to the resources needed to obtain, monitor and enforce IP rights. Understanding how the support organizations facilitate this work is therefore of importance for the startups as well as for universities and policy actors seeking to support technology transfer. The identified publications were systematized according to the actor in focus and whether the paper discussed IP as an output or as a strategic focus. The literature review showed that this literature tends to adopt a simplistic view of IP management, not taking all strategies into account. The literature typically narrows the focus down to a simplistic view of trying to increase the patent output of TTOs and incubators, and the related firms and/or universities.

  • The relationship development aspect of production transfer
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - : Pergamon Press. - 1478-4092 .- 1873-6505. ; 22:1, s. 53-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Production transfers are a result of outsourcing and offshoring decisions. Because of the strategic focus of the outsourcing literature, the operational issues of relationship development between sender and receiver and its impact on the transfer progress have not been fully depicted. The purpose of the present paper is to explore relationship development during production transfer. To fulfil this purpose, we studied three different production transfers and derived four propositions for further testing. Our main conclusions included that dependence and power gradually shift between the sender and the receiver and that the relationship between them sets the arena for what types of relationships can be developed between the receiver and the suppliers. Furthermore, short social distances can bridge cultural and technological distances to some extent, because it motivates the actors to bring their relationship into a more developed state. Finally, we noticed that the headquarters’ involvement can work both as an inhibitor as well as a converter.

  • An Evidence-Based Research Agenda for Action-Based Entrepreneurship Education
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A growing research stream is ‘action-based’ entrepreneurship education, where students actively engage in entrepreneurship and learning is primarily student-centered rather than teacher-led. In the present paper, we look to the practice of teaching in order to clarify key challenges and identify a future research agenda for entrepreneurship education. The research design revolves around a global forum for venture creation programs which consists of eleven programs in six different countries in Europe and North America. The method involves written material in order to develop a model and later semi-structured interviews based on the model. The present paper builds on previous developments within research and teaching practice regarding action-based entrepreneurship education and suggests that further research should focus on (1) students’ perspective in developing strategies to handle venture creation and academic work simultaneously, (2) strategies to develop curriculum, deliverables and assessment schemes that acknowledge the diversity among students’ venture creation processes, (3) development of tailor-made quality assurance and impact measures and (4) exploring the role of faculty in terms of their prior experience and involvement for students’ learning. We suggest that a future research agenda focus on these four issues from the teachers’ point of view, the learners’ point of view and the institutional point of view in a systematic way. Thereby, the present paper contributes to the research field of entrepreneurship education by providing an evidence-based research agenda for entrepreneurship education.

  • A literature review of intellectual property management in technology transfer offices: From appropriation to utilization
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Technology in Society. - : Elsevier BV. - 0160-791X. ; 59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a systematic literature review of the intersection between intellectual property (IP) management and technology transfer offices (TTOs) in the context of universities in order to understand how TTOs manage IP. IP management is an important issue, as it both enables and restricts the utilization of research results and impacts the competitiveness of technology-based businesses. The literature review shows that previous studies of IP management in TTOs tend to adopt a simplistic view of IP management, recommending that all valuable inventions should be patented. Moreover, academic research into TTOs and actual TTO practices both appear to focus on improving efficiency and outputs measured in terms of numbers of patents, licenses and spin-offs. We call this established view the appropriation mode of TTOs and question it based on the logics of publicly funded research and modern IP management. In its place, we suggest the utilization mode of TTOs , in which TTOs manage IP from publicly funded research in order to govern innovation processes and enable utilization of research results in a broader sense. Several recommendations are provided for both researchers and practitioners.

  • The network mediation of an incubator : How does it enable or constrain the development of incubator firms' business networks?
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-8501. ; 80, s. 126-138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Incubators are organisations or structures that usually offer five types of services in order to accelerate start-up development: access to physical resources, administrative services, access to financial resources, assistance with start-up procedures and access to networks. The aim of the present paper is to investigate the mediating role of the incubator. More specifically, it examines how the incubator's mediation is related to incubator firms' development of broader business networks. The primary data comprised 34 face-to-face interviews with 19 respondents from an incubator and its incubator firms and with other actors with which the incubator had a relationship. The paper offers three conclusions concerning how the network horizon influences the incubator's capacity to mediate relationships, the necessity for incubator firms to be proactive in order to utilise the mediation activities of the incubator and the influence of public-funding agencies in the development of incubator firms, which is based on their role as third actors in connected business relationships.
