  • Search for invisible Higgs-boson decays in events with vector-boson fusion signatures using 139 fb-1 of proton-proton data recorded by the ATLAS experiment
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : SPRINGER. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A direct search for Higgs bosons produced via vector-boson fusion andsubsequently decaying into invisible particles is reported. The analysis uses 139 fb−1of pp collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLASdetector at the LHC. The observed numbers of events are found to be in agreement withthe background expectation from Standard Model processes. For a scalar Higgs bosonwith a mass of 125 GeV and a Standard Model production cross section, an observed upperlimit of 0.145 is placed on the branching fraction of its decay into invisible particles at 95%confidence level, with an expected limit of 0.103. These results are interpreted in the contextof models where the Higgs boson acts as a portal to dark matter, and limits are set onthe scattering cross section of weakly interacting massive particles and nucleons. Invisibledecays of additional scalar bosons with masses from 50 GeV to 2 TeV are also studied, and the derived upper limits on the cross section times branching fraction decrease withincreasing mass from 1.0 pb for a scalar boson mass of 50 GeV to 0.1 pb at a mass of 2 TeV.

  • Phenotypic responses of zooplankton to variable conditions
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Organisms are continually challenged by multiple threats in the environment, and such threats are seldom constant in either time or space. Therefore, organisms must maintain physiological, behavioural, morphological and life- history adaptations across environments to prevent reductions in fitness. Freshwater ecosystems are particularly variable environments, and so organisms inhabiting lakes and ponds exhibit a range of different adaptations in order to survive and propagate. Despite this, the energetic constraints and potentially divergent responses required towards multiple threats creates the necessity to make trade-offs in their phenotypic repertoire. The outcomes of such phenotypic compromises are often difficult to predict and requires both a mechanistic understanding of the threats and responses involved, as well as insights into the resulting fitness consequences. Although this is relatively well understood with regards to some threats like predation for example, other biotic and abiotic stressors are less well studied. In this thesis I identify phenotypic compromises in behavioural, morphological and life-history traits of zooplankton with regards to variable environments.Behaviour is often considered one of the most labile traits and consequently it may provide a quick and inexpensive response to infrequent or rapidly changing contexts. Using 3D tracking, I focused on swimming behaviour of Daphnia magna in response to social context and found that females avoid males in a way that resembles a predation event. In a separate experiment I investigated how the presence of a high-density food patch altered the response to the abiotic threat ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Here I found that despite the potential fitness consequences of UVR the foraging opportunity reduced the avoidance response that has been classically described in Daphnia.UVR is a substantial threat in aquatic systems with documented physiological, behavioural, morphological and life- history responses. It is also a particularly variable stressor as it is absent during night and varies in intensity over the seasons. Despite its variable nature, studies have typically only addressed the presence or absence and not fluctuating UVR stress. I addressed this gap in the knowledge by tracking the survival, reproduction and behavioural response to both fluctuating and stable exposure of UVR. Simply by varying the scheduling but not the quantity of UVR stress, I identified fitness costs that appeared to be linked to the cost of the behavioural avoidance. In high-latitude environments, where phenotypic plasticity is promoted due to seasonal variability, copepods increase pigmentation in response to increased UVR but only in the absence of fish. I tested whether this response is ubiquitous at lower latitudes that experience less seasonality and have evolved with different predation regimes. Copepods from fishless environments had higher pigmentation than those with visually hunting predators. I also found that plasticity towards UVR removal was minor, but plasticity towards predation was mostly idiosyncratic. This suggests that plasticity does exist for the threats that are most variable and constitutive responses may have evolved towards ever present danger.

  • On the relationship between blend state and dispersibility of adhesive mixtures containing active pharmaceutical ingredients
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Pharmaceutics. - : Elsevier. - 2590-1567. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objectives of this investigation were to study the evolution in blend state of adhesive mixtures containing the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) salbutamol, budesonide and AZD5423 and to study the relationship between blend state and dispersibility of the mixtures, as assessed by the fine particle fraction (FPF). A series of adhesive mixtures of varied fines concentration were prepared for each API using the same type of carrier. Based on visual examination and powder mechanics, blend states were identified and summarized as blend state maps for each API. The dispersibility of the mixtures was studied using a Fast Screening Impactor (FSI) equipped with a ScreenHaler. The evolution in blend state differed between the APIs in terms of the width of the blend states. The structure of the adhesion layer also differed between the APIs, from relatively uniform to a heterogeneous layer with small agglomerates dispersed on the carrier surface. All three APIs expressed a similar type of bended relationship between FPF and fines concentration. However, the initial rate of increase and the fines concentration of the plateau differed between the APIs. The adhesive mixtures of all APIs followed the three main states in terms of structural evolution and the overall shape of the FPF-fines concentration profiles could be explained by the evolution in blend state. It is proposed that the structure of the adhesion layer is an important factor explaining the differences in blend state - blend dispersibility relationships between the APIs.

  • Risk factors for the progression to multimorbidity among UK urban working-age adults. A community cohort study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - 1932-6203. ; 18:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ObjectivesThe progression of long-term conditions (LTCs) from zero-to-one (initiation), and from one-to-many (progression)are common trajectories that impact a person’s quality of life including their ability to work. This study aimed to explore the demographic, socioeconomic, psychosocial, and health-related determinants of LTC initiation and progression, with a focus on work participation.MethodsData from 622 working-age adults who had completed two waves (baseline and follow-up) of the South-East London Community Health survey were analysed. Chi square tests and multinomial logistic regression were used to describe the associations between self-reported demographic, socioeconomic, psychosocial, and health-related variables, and the progression of LTCs.ResultsSmall social networks, an increased number of stressful life events, low self-rated health, functional impairment, and increased somatic symptom severity were all associated with both the progression from zero-to-one LTC and from one LTC to multimorbidity (two or more LTCs). Renting accommodation (RRR 1.73 [95% CI 1.03–2.90]), smoking (RRR 1.91 [95% CI 1.16–3.14]) and being overweight (RRR 1.88 [95% CL 1.12–3.16]) were unique risk factors of developing initial LTCs, whereas low income (RRR 2.53 [95% CI 1.11–5.80]), working part-time (RRR 2.82 ([95% CL 1.12–7.10]), being unemployed (RRR 4.83 [95% CI 1.69–13.84]), and making an early work exit (RRR 16.86 [95% CI 3.99–71.30]) all increased the risk of progressing from one LTC to multimorbidity compared to being employed full-time. At follow-up, depression was the most prevalent LTC in the unemployed group whereas musculoskeletal conditions were the most prevalent in those working.ConclusionsThe journey to multimorbidity is complex, with both common and unique risk factors. Non-full-time employment was associated with an increased risk of progression to multimorbidity. Future research should explore the risk and benefit pathways between employment and progression of LTCs. Interventions to prevent progression of LTCs should include mitigation of modifiable risk factors such as social isolation.

  • Avoiding the Target Language with the Help of Google : Managing Language Choices in Gathering Information for EFL Project Work
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: TESOL quarterly (Print). - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0039-8322 .- 1545-7249. ; 48:1, s. 110-135
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The integration of translation tools into the Google search engine has led to a huge increase in the visibility and accessibility of such tools, with potentially far-reaching implications for the English language classroom. Although these translation tools are the focus of this study, using them is in fact only one way in which English language learners can exercise their language preferences, especially when working more autonomously. By acting upon these preferences and opting to read in their first language, learners effectively adopt an avoidance strategy—that of avoiding the target language. This qualitative study highlights several ways in which pupils can and do exercise their language choices in their computer-assisted project work using (Swedish) Google. More specifically, after mapping out the trajectories of pupils' Internet searches and their gathering of resources, conversation analysis is used to zoom in on key moves that are jointly negotiated at the interface with Google, where different language options are made available and even flagged. By making incremental choices that avoid English (or favour Swedish), the visibility of English can diminish radically, if not altogether. The negative implications of avoidance are discussed as well as the practicalities of solutions using Google itself.

  • On control of static synchronous series compensator for SSR mitigation
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on power electronics. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0885-8993 .- 1941-0107. ; 23:2, s. 735-743
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper deals with the analysis and simulation of the static series compensator (SSSC) for subsynchronous resonance (SSR) mitigation. The purpose of the paper is to derive and analyze a novel control strategy for SSSC dedicated for SSR mitigation. Objective of the proposed controller is to increase the network damping only at those frequencies that are critical for the turbine-generator shaft. By using frequency scanning analysis, the effectiveness of the proposed method for mitigation of SSR due to torsional interaction effect is presented and compared with the existing control strategy. Finally, simulation results show the performance of the proposed method in mitigating SSR due to torque amplification effect.

  • Non-Coding RNA as Biomarkers for Type 2 Diabetes Development and Clinical Management
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in endocrinology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-2392. ; 12, s. 630032-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Diabetes, a metabolic disease characterized by high blood glucose and other complications, has undefined causes and multiple risk factors, including inappropriate diet, unhealthy lifestyles, and genetic predisposition. The two most distinguished types of diabetes are type 1 and type 2 diabetes, resulting from the autoimmune impairment of insulin-generating pancreatic β cells and insulin insensitivity, respectively. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), a cohort of RNAs with little transcriptional value, have been found to exert substantial importance in epigenetic and posttranscriptional modulation of gene expression such as messenger RNA (mRNA) silencing. This review mainly focuses on the pathology of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and ncRNAs as potential biomarkers in T2D development and clinical management. We consolidate the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and current treatments of T2D, and present the existing evidence on changes in multiple types of ncRNAs in response to various pathological changes and dysfunctions in different stages of T2D.

  • GPUMD: A package for constructing accurate machine-learned potentials and performing highly efficient atomistic simulations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 1089-7690 .- 0021-9606. ; 157:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present our latest advancements of machine-learned potentials (MLPs) based on the neuroevolution potential (NEP) framework introduced in Fan et al. [Phys. Rev. B 104, 104309 (2021)] and their implementation in the open-source package gpumd. We increase the accuracy of NEP models both by improving the radial functions in the atomic-environment descriptor using a linear combination of Chebyshev basis functions and by extending the angular descriptor with some four-body and five-body contributions as in the atomic cluster expansion approach. We also detail our efficient implementation of the NEP approach in graphics processing units as well as our workflow for the construction of NEP models and demonstrate their application in large-scale atomistic simulations. By comparing to state-of-the-art MLPs, we show that the NEP approach not only achieves above-average accuracy but also is far more computationally efficient. These results demonstrate that the gpumd package is a promising tool for solving challenging problems requiring highly accurate, large-scale atomistic simulations. To enable the construction of MLPs using a minimal training set, we propose an active-learning scheme based on the latent space of a pre-trained NEP model. Finally, we introduce three separate Python packages, viz., gpyumd, calorine, and pynep, that enable the integration of gpumd into Python workflows.

  • Changes in Plant Rhizosphere Microbial Communities under Different Vegetation Restoration Patterns in Karst and Non-karst Ecosystems
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 9:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding how patterns of recovery and geological conditions affect microbial communities is important for determining the stability of karst ecosystems. Here, we investigated the diversity and composition of microorganisms in karst and non-karst environments under natural restoration and artificial rehabilitation conditions. The results showed no significant differences in soil microbial diversity, but the microbial communities associated with geological conditions and tree species differed significantly. Variation partitioning analysis (VPA) showed that a total of 77.3% of the variation in bacteria and a total of 69.3% of the variation in fungi could be explained by vegetation type and geological background. There were significant differences in six bacterial classes (Actinobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, Ktedonobacteria, TK10, Gammaproteobacteria, and Anaerolineae) and nine fungal classes (Eurotiomycetes, Agaricomycetes, unclassified _p_Ascomycota, Sordariomycetes, Tremellomycetes, norank_k_Fungi, Pezizomycetes, Leotiomycetes and Archaeorhizomycetes) among the soils collected from six plots. A Spearman correlation heatmap showed that the microbial community was affected by the major soil properties. Principal coordinates analysis indicated that the microbial community of Pinus yunnanensis in the artificial forest, which was established for the protection of the environment was most similar to that in the natural secondary forest in the karst ecosystem. These findings further our understanding of microbial responses to vegetation restoration and geological conditions.

  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Analog Integrated Circuits and Signal Processing. - Hingham, MA, USA : Kluwer Academic Publishers. - 0925-1030 .- 1573-1979. ; 32:3, s. 201-210
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Oversampling sigma-delta digital-to-analog converters are crucial building blocks for telecommunication applications. To reduce power consumption, lower oversampling ratios are preferred thus high-order digital sigma-delta modulators are needed to meet the dynamic performance requirements. This paper presents an oversampling DAC with 1.104 MHz signal bandwidth for DMT-ADSL application and focuses on the design issues of the high-order one-bit multiple feedback modulators (such as the stability problem, good inband SNDR performance, limit cycles, etc.). A new approach to obtain and optimize the stable feedback coefficients has been presented. From our analysis results it is found that the extra feedback coefficients and scaling coefficients in the modulator have non-negligible impact on the behavior of the limit cycles, and design guide for selecting the scaling coefficients is provided. Finally a 5th-order modulator with an oversampling ratio of 32 and 14-bit input has been implemented in a 0.6 mum 3.3 V CMOS process and integrated into the whole DAC chip.

  • The Coronavirus Anxiety Scale : Cross-National Measurement Invariance and Convergent Validity Evidence
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Psychological Assessment. - 1040-3590 .- 1939-134X. ; 36:1, s. 14-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS) is a widely used measure that captures somatic symptoms of coronavirus-related anxiety. In a large-scale collaboration spanning 60 countries (Ntotal = 21,513), we examined the CAS's measurement invariance and assessed the convergent validity of CAS scores in relation to the fear of COVID-19 (FCV-19S) and the satisfaction with life (SWLS-3) scales. We utilized both conventional exact invariance tests and alignment procedures, with results revealing that the single-factor model fit the data well in almost all countries. Partial scalar invariance was supported in a subset of 56 countries. To ensure the robustness of results, given the unbalanced samples, we employed resampling techniques both with and without replacement and found the results were more stable in larger samples. The alignment procedure demonstrated a high degree of measurement invariance with 9% of the parameters exhibiting noninvariance. We also conducted simulations of alignment using the parameters estimated in the current model. Findings demonstrated reliability of the means but indicated challenges in estimating the latent variances. Strong positive correlations between CAS and FCV-19S estimated with all three different approaches were found in most countries. Correlations of CAS and SWLS-3 were weak and negative but significantly differed from zero in several countries. Overall, the study provided support for the measurement invariance of the CAS and offered evidence of its convergent validity while also highlighting issues with variance estimation.

  • Practical guidance for CD management involving treatment of botulinum toxin: a consensus statement
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Neurology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1432-1459 .- 0340-5354. ; 262:10, s. 2201-2213

    • Cervical dystonia is a neurological movement disorder causing abnormal posture of the head. It may be accompanied by involuntary movements which are sometimes tremulous. The condition has marked effects on patients' self-image, and adversely affects quality of life, social relationships and employment. Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) is the treatment of choice for CD and its efficacy and safety have been extensively studied in clinical trials. However, current guidelines do not provide enough practical information for physicians who wish to use this valuable treatment in a real-life setting. In addition, patients and physicians may have different perceptions of what successful treatment outcomes should be. Consequently, an international group of expert neurologists, experienced in BoNT treatment, met to review the literature and pool their extensive clinical experience to give practical guidance about treatment of CD with BoNT. Eight topic headings were considered: the place of BoNT within CD treatment options; patient perspectives and desires for treatment; assessment and goal setting; starting treatment with BoNT-A; follow-up sessions; management of side effects; management of non-response; switching between different BoNT products. One rapporteur took responsibility for summarising the current literature for each topic, while the consensus statements were developed by the entire expert group. These statements are presented here along with a discussion of the background information.

  • Insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor polymorphism rs2229765 and circulating interleukin-6 level affect male longevity in a population-based prospective study (Treviso Longeva--TRELONG).
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The Aging Male. - 1368-5538. ; 14:4, s. 257-264
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) signaling modulation has been associated with increased lifespan in model organisms, while high levels of circulating interleukin-6 (IL-6) are a marker of disability and mortality. In the prospective, population-based "Treviso Longeva"--TRELONG Study from Italy (n = 668, age range 70-105.5 years at baseline, followed for seven years) we investigated the effects of survival on the IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R) gene polymorphism rs2229765, the IL-6 gene promoter polymorphism rs1800795, and plasma concentrations of IGF-1 and IL-6, alone or in combination. We found a sex-dependent effect for the IGF-1R rs2229765 polymorphism, as male carriers of the homozygous A/A genotype survived longer, while the IL-6 rs1800795 genotype did not influence overall or sex-specific longevity. Higher IL-6 levels were more detrimental for survival among males than females, while IGF-1 had no dose-response effect. These findings sustain the hypothesis that sex-specific longevity relies on detectable differences in genetic and biochemical parameters between males and females.

  • Evolution in boron-based GEM detectors for diffraction measurements : From planar to 3D converters
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Measurement science and technology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-0233 .- 1361-6501. ; 27:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The so-called '3He-crisis' has motivated the neutron detector community to undertake an intense R&D programme in order to develop technologies alternative to standard 3He tubes and suitable for neutron detection systems in future spallation sources such as the European spallation source (ESS). Boron-based GEM (gas electron multiplier) detectors are a promising '3He-free' technology for thermal neutron detection in neutron scattering experiments. In this paper the evolution of boron-based GEM detectors from planar to 3D converters with an application in diffraction measurements is presented. The use of 3D converters coupled with GEMs allows for an optimization of the detector performances. Three different detectors were used for diffraction measurements on the INES instrument at the ISIS spallation source. The performances of the GEM-detectors are compared with those of conventional 3He tubes installed on the INES instrument. The conceptual detector with the 3D converter used in this paper reached a count rate per unit area of about 25% relative to the currently installed 3He tube. Its timing resolution is similar and the signal-to-background ratio (S/B) is 2 times lower.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • C-, Ku- and Ka-band communications and broadcast satellites use so-called dual-gridded reflector antennas for linear polarisation to provide independent reflector surfaces and/or independent feeds for the two orthogonal polarisations. This paper describes initial work to extend this concept to circular polarisation. First we set up preliminary specifications and identify several antenna concepts based upon planar transmission sheet polarisers. Next we identify a number of polarisers of which the most promising is the meander-line, the L+C strip-grids and the parallel-plate polariser. Finally we review the conclusions of the analyses and preliminary designs of the sheet polarisers - on the antenna level as part of a reflector antenna system, on the polariser level, and on the sheet level inside the polariser.

  • Investigation of Late-Cycle Soot Oxidation Using Laser Extinction and In-Cylinder Gas Sampling at Varying Inlet Oxygen Concentrations in Diesel Engines
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Fuel. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-7153 .- 0016-2361. ; 193, s. 308-314
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study focuses on the relative importance of O2 and OH as oxidizers of soot during the late cycle in diesel engines, where the soot oxidation is characterized in an optically accessible engine using laser extinction measurements. These are combined with in cylinder gas sampling data from a single cylinder engine fitted with a fast gas sampling valve. Both measurements confirm that the in-cylinder soot oxidation slows down when the inlet concentration of O2 is reduced. A 38% decrease in intake O2 concentration reduces the soot oxidation rate by 83%, a non-linearity suggesting that O2 in itself is not the main soot oxidizing species. Chemical kinetics simulations of OH concentrations in the oxidation zone and estimates of the OH soot oxidation rates point towards OH being the dominant oxidizer.

  • Cytokines promote Wnt signaling and inflammation and impair the normal differentiation and lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: J Biol Chem. - 0021-9258. ; 281:14, s. 9507-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Obesity with enlarged fat cells is associated with high local concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) in the adipose tissue. We examined the effects of this inflammatory state on 3T3-L1 preadipocyte development and differentiation to mature adipose cells. Both IL-6 and TNFalpha impaired the normal differentiation pattern and lipid accumulation. However, IL-6 allowed a normal early induction of differentiation with inhibition of Wnt10b and Pref-1, whereas expression of CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein alpha, in contrast to peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma, was markedly reduced. TNFalpha also allowed a normal early induction of differentiation, whereas the terminal differentiation to adipose cells was completely prevented. However, both cytokines induced an inflammatory phenotype of the cells but with different profiles. Remarkably, both IL-6 and TNFalpha maintained and augmented the canonical Wnt signaling associated with low axin and high low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein (LRD), Dishevelled, and beta-catenin levels. TNFalpha, but not IL-6, activated Wnt10b expression, whereas IL-6 increased the apparent phosphorylation of Dishevelled. Thus, both IL-6 and TNFalpha prevent the normal development of preadipocytes to fully differentiated adipose cells and, instead, promote an inflammatory phenotype of the adipocytes. These results provide an explanation as to why obesity and diabetes are associated with both local and systemic inflammation, insulin resistance, and ectopic lipid accumulation.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Electrochemical Society. - 0013-4651 .- 1945-7111. ; 160:4, s. D173-D177
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Copper indium diselenide (CuInSe2) films have been prepared by pulse electrodeposition technique on Molybdenum substrate followed by post-deposition annealing at 550°C. Optimization of pulse parameters by varying the pulse duration (duty cycle) in order to achieve high quality films has been reported. Appropriate manipulation of pulse parameters has resulted in a novel flake-like crystallite morphology and better control over the composition of individual elements. The CIS thin films were comprehensively characterized using SEM-EDS, FIB, XRD and UV-DRS to study their morphology, phase constitution, etc. and PEC (photoelectrochemistry) measurements were also carried out to ascertain the photoelectrochemical performance of the CIS absorber layer. The bandgap of the CIS films was determined to be 1.02 eV. The flake like crystallite morphology observed in CIS thin films under the optimized processing conditions was found to yield enhanced cathodic photoresponse under solar simulated light with a photocurrent density of 20 μA/cm2 (observed at a potential of -0.6 V vs. SCE). The films exhibited a photoresponse typical of a p-type semiconductor. © 2013 The Electrochemical Society.
