  • Edge profile analysis of Joint European Torus (JET) Thomson scattering data : Quantifying the systematic error due to edge localised mode synchronisation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 87:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Joint European Torus (JET) high resolution Thomson scattering (HRTS) system measures radial electron temperature and density profiles. One of the key capabilities of this diagnostic is measuring the steep pressure gradient, termed the pedestal, at the edge of JET plasmas. The pedestal is susceptible to limiting instabilities, such as Edge Localised Modes (ELMs), characterised by a periodic collapse of the steep gradient region. A common method to extract the pedestal width, gradient, and height, used on numerous machines, is by performing a modified hyperbolic tangent (mtanh) fit to overlaid profiles selected from the same region of the ELM cycle. This process of overlaying profiles, termed ELM synchronisation, maximises the number of data points defining the pedestal region for a given phase of the ELM cycle. When fitting to HRTS profiles, it is necessary to incorporate the diagnostic radial instrument function, particularly important when considering the pedestal width. A deconvolved fit is determined by a forward convolution method requiring knowledge of only the instrument function and profiles. The systematic error due to the deconvolution technique incorporated into the JET pedestal fitting tool has been documented by Frassinetti et al. [Rev. Sci. Instrum. 83, 013506 (2012)]. This paper seeks to understand and quantify the systematic error introduced to the pedestal width due to ELM synchronisation. Synthetic profiles, generated with error bars and point-to-point variation characteristic of real HRTS profiles, are used to evaluate the deviation from the underlying pedestal width. We find on JET that the ELM synchronisation systematic error is negligible in comparison to the statistical error when assuming ten overlaid profiles (typical for a pre-ELM fit to HRTS profiles). This confirms that fitting a mtanh to ELM synchronised profiles is a robust and practical technique for extracting the pedestal structure.

  • Raman microscopy investigation of beryllium materials
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; T167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report for the first time on the ability of Raman microscopy to give information on the structure and composition of Be related samples mimicking plasma facing materials that will be found in ITER. For that purpose, we investigate two types of material. First: Be, W, Be1W9, and Be5W5 deposits containing a few percents of D or N, and second: a Mo mirror exposed to plasma in the main JET chamber (in the framework of the first mirror test in JET with ITER-like wall). We performed atomic quantifications using ion beam analysis for the first samples. We also did atomic force microscopy. We found defect induced Raman bands in Be, Be1W9, and Be5W5 deposits. Molybdenum oxide has been identified showing an enhancement due to a resonance effect in the UV domain.

  • Long-term fuel retention in JET ITER-like wall
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; T167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Post-mortem studies with ion beam analysis, thermal desorption, and secondary ion mass spectrometry have been applied for investigating the long-term fuel retention in the JET ITERlike wall components. The retention takes place via implantation and co-deposition, and the highest retention values were found to correlate with the thickness of the deposited impurity layers. From the total amount of retained D fuel over half was detected in the divertor region. The majority of the retained D is on the top surface of the inner divertor, whereas the least retention was measured in the main chamber on the mid-plane of the inner wall limiter. The recessed areas of the inner wall showed significant contribution to the main chamber total retention. Thermal desorption spectroscopy analysis revealed the energetic T from DD reactions being implanted in the divertor. The total T inventory was assessed to be >0.3 mg.

  • Erosion and deposition in the JET divertor during the first ILW campaign
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; T167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Erosion and deposition were studied in the JET divertor during the first JET ITER-like wall campaign 2011 to 2012 using marker tiles. An almost complete poloidal section consisting of tiles 0, 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 was studied. The data from divertor tile surfaces were completed by the analysis of samples from remote divertor areas and from the inner wall cladding. The total mass of material deposited in the divertor decreased by a factor of 4-9 compared to the deposition of carbon during all-carbon JET operation before 2010. Deposits in 2011 to 2012 consist mainly of beryllium with 5-20 at.% of carbon and oxygen, respectively, and small amounts of Ni, Cr, Fe and W. This decrease of material deposition in the divertor is accompanied by a decrease of total deuterium retention inside the JET vessel by a factor of 10 to 20. The detailed erosion/deposition pattern in the divertor with the ITER-like wall configuration shows rigorous changes compared to the pattern with the all-carbon JET configuration.

  • A generalized Abel inversion method for gamma-ray imaging of thermonuclear plasmas
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 1748-0221. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A method to determine the gamma-ray emissivity profile from measurements along a few multiple collimated lines of sight in thermonuclear plasmas is presented. The algorithm is based on a generalisation of the known Abel inversion and takes into account the non circular shape of the plasma flux surfaces and the limited number of data points available. The method is applied to synthetic experimental measurements originating from parabolic and non parabolic JET gamma-ray emissivity profiles, where the aim is to compare the results of the inversion with the original, known input parameters. We find that profile parameters, such as the peak value, width and centre of the emissivity, are determined with an accuracy between 1 and 20% for parabolic and 2 to 25% for non parabolic profiles, respectively, which compare to an error at the 10% level for the input data. The results presented in this paper are primarily of relevance for the reconstruction of emissivity profiles from radiation measurements in tokamaks, but the method can also be applied to measurements along a sparse set of collimated lines of sight in general applications, provided that the surfaces at constant emissivity are known to have rotational simmetry.

  • Gamma-ray spectroscopy at MHz counting rates with a compact LaBr3 detector and silicon photomultipliers for fusion plasma applications
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 87:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gamma-ray spectroscopy measurements at MHz counting rates have been carried out, for the first time, with a compact spectrometer based on a LaBr3 scintillator and silicon photomultipliers. The instrument, which is also insensitive to magnetic fields, has been developed in view of the upgrade of the gamma-ray camera diagnostic for a particle measurements in deuterium-tritium plasmas of the Joint European Torus. Spectra were measured up to 2.9 MHz with a projected energy resolution of 3%-4% in the 3-5 MeV range, of interest for fast ion physics studies in fusion plasmas. The results reported here pave the way to first time measurements of the confined a particle profile in high power plasmas of the next deuterium-tritium campaign at the Joint European Torus.

  • Nitrogen retention mechanisms in tokamaks with beryllium and tungsten plasma-facing surfaces
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; T167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Global gas balance experiments at ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) and JET have shown that a considerable fraction of nitrogen injected for radiative cooling is not recovered as N-2 upon regeneration of the liquid helium cryo pump. The most probable loss channels are ion implantation into plasma-facing materials, co-deposition and ammonia formation. These three mechanisms are investigated in laboratory and tokamak experiments and by numerical simulations. Laboratory experiments have shown that implantation of nitrogen ions into beryllium and tungsten leads to the formation of surface nitrides, which may decompose under thermal loads. On beryllium the presence of nitrogen at the surface has been seen to reduce the sputtering yield. On tungsten surfaces it has been observed that the presence of nitrogen can increase hydrogen retention. The global nitrogen retention in AUG by implantation into the tungsten surfaces saturates. At JET the steady state nitrogen retention is increased by co-deposition with beryllium. The tokamak experiments are interpreted in detail by simulations of the global migration with WallDYN. Mass spectrometry of the exhaust gas of AUG and JET has revealed the conversion of nitrogen to ammonia at percent-levels. Conclusions are drawn on the potential implications of nitrogen seeding on the operation of a reactor in a deuterium-tritium mix.

  • Characterization of a diamond detector to be used as neutron yield monitor during the in-vessel calibration of JET neutron detectors in preparation of the DT experiment
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Fusion engineering and design. - : Elsevier. - 0920-3796 .- 1873-7196. ; 106, s. 93-98
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new Deuterium-Tritium (DT) campaign is planned at JET. An accurate calibration for the 14 MeV neutron yield monitors is necessary. In order to perform the calibration a 14 MeV Neutron Generator with suitable intensity (similar to 10(8) n/s) will be used. Due to the intensity change during the Neutron Generator lifetime it would be necessary to monitor continuously the neutron emission intensity during the calibration using a compact detector attached to it. A high quality diamond detector has been chosen as one of the monitors. This detector has been fully characterized at the 14 MeV Frascati Neutron Generator facility. The characterization procedure and the resulting 14 MeV neutron response of the detector are described in this paper together with the obtained uncertainties.

  • Response function of single crystal synthetic diamond detectors to 1-4 MeV neutrons for spectroscopy of D plasmas
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 87:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A Single-crystal Diamond (SD) detector prototype was installed at Joint European Torus (JET) in 2013 and the achieved results have shown its spectroscopic capability of measuring 2.5 MeV neutrons from deuterium plasmas. This paper presents measurements of the SD response function to monoenergetic neutrons, which is a key point for the development of a neutron spectrometer based on SDs and compares them with Monte Carlo simulations. The analysis procedure allows for a good reconstruction of the experimental results. The good pulse height energy resolution (equivalent FWHM of 80 keV at 2.5 MeV), gain stability, insensitivity to magnetic field, and compact size make SDs attractive as compact neutron spectrometers of high flux deuterium plasmas, such as for instance those needed for the ITER neutron camera.

  • Investigation on the erosion/deposition processes in the ITER-like wall divertor at JET using glow discharge optical emission spectrometry technique
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; T167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a complementary method to Rutherford back scattering (RBS), glow discharge optical emission spectrometry (GDOES) was used to investigate the depth profiles of W, Mo, Be, O and C concentrations into marker coatings (CFC/Mo/W/Mo/W) and the substrate of divertor tiles up to a depth of about 100 μm. A number of 10 samples cored from particular areas of the divertor tiles were analyzed. The results presented in this paper are valid only for those areas and they cannot be extrapolated to the entire tile. Significant deposition of Be was measured on Tile 3 (near to the top), Tile 6 (at about 40 mm from the innermost edge) and especially on Tile 0 (HFGC). Preliminary experiments seem to indicate a penetration of Be through the pores and imperfections of CFC material up to a depth of 100 μm in some cases. No erosion and a thin layer of Be (<1 μm) was detected on Tiles 4, 7 and 8. On Tile 1 no erosion was found at about 1/3 from bottom.

  • Fast-ion energy resolution by one-step reaction gamma-ray spectrometry
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 56:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The spectral broadening of gamma-rays from fusion plasmas can be measured in high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry (GRS). We derive weight functions that determine the observable velocity space and quantify the velocity-space sensitivity of one-step reaction high-resolution GRS measurements in magnetized fusion plasmas. The weight functions suggest that GRS resolves the energies of fast ions directly without the need for tomographic inversion for selected one-step reactions at moderate plasma temperatures. The D(p,gamma)He-3 reaction allows the best direct fast-ion energy resolution. We illustrate our general formalism using reactions with and without intrinsic broadening of the gamma-rays for the GRS diagnostic at JET.

  • Comparative gyrokinetic analysis of JET baseline H-mode core plasmas with carbon wall and ITER-like wall
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0741-3335 .- 1361-6587. ; 58:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Following the change of plasma facing components at JET from a carbon wall (CW) to a metal ITER-like wall (ILW) a deterioration of global confinement has been observed for H-mode baseline experiments. The deterioration has been correlated with a degradation of pedestal confinement with lower electron temperatures at the top of the edge barrier region. In order to investigate the change in core confinement, heat transport due to Ion Temperature Gradient (ITG)/Trapped Electron Mode (TEM) turbulence is investigated using the gyrokinetic code GENE. Two pairs of CW and ILW discharges that are matched according to several global parameters are simulated at mid radius. The simulations included effects of collisions, finite beta, realistic geometries, and impurities. A sensitivity study is performed with respect to the key dimensionless parameters in the matched pairs. The combined effect of the relative change in these parameters is that the ITG mode is destabilized in the ILW discharges compared to the CW discharges. This is also reflected in nonlinear simulations where the ILW discharges show higher normalized ion and electron heat fluxes and larger stiffness. The ion energy confinement time within rho = 0.5 is found to be comparable while the electron confinement time is shorter for the ILW discharges. The core confinement in the ILW discharges is expected to improve if the edge pedestal is recovered since that would favourably change the key plasma parameters that now serve to destabilize them.

  • Comparison of dust transport modelling codes in a tokamak plasma
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physics of Plasmas. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 1070-664X .- 1089-7674. ; 23:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the installation on the Joint European Torus of the ITER-like Wall (ILW), intense radiation spikes have been observed, especially in the discharges following a disruption, and have been associated with possible sudden injection of tungsten (W) impurities consequent to full ablation of W dust particles. The problem of dust production, mobilization, and interaction both with the plasma and the vessel tiles is therefore of great concern and requires the setting up of dedicated and validated numerical modeling tools. Among these, a useful role is played by the dust trajectory calculators, which can present in a relatively clear way the qualitative and quantitative description of the mobilization and fate of selected bunches of dust grains.
