Patterns of incorporations of lexemes in language contact: language typology or sociolinguistics

Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
- Claims have been made that pairs of languages in contact tend to favor either borrowing or code-switching and this preference can in part be predicted based on a typological comparison of the languages involved. In this paper language contact data from different bilingual communities are presented: two in Sweden and one in Central Africa. The three communities represent three quite different typological relationships with each other. Our study shows that the typological comparison does not take us that far in explaining the patterns of morphological integration. Rather we believe that the historical and current sociolinguistic situation of language contact must play a more major explanatory role.
