  • Inclusive V-0 production cross sections from 920 GeV fixed target proton-nucleus collisions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 29:2, s. 181-190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inclusive differential cross sections dsigma(pA)/dx(F) and dsigma(pA)/dp(t)(2) for the production of K-S(0), Lambda, and (&ULambda;) over bar particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C, Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to roots = 41.6 GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential cross sections dsigma(pA)(K-S(0))/dsigma(pA)(Lambda) and dsigma(pA)((&ULambda;) over bar)/dsigma(pA) (Lambda) are measured to be 6.2 +/- 0.5 and 0.66 +/- 0.07, respectively, for x(F) approximate to -0.06. No significant dependence upon the target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions da,Ald t also show no significant dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total cross sections sigma(pA) on the atomic mass A of the target material is discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon sigma(pN) are compared with results obtained at other energies.

  • Measurement of the b(b)over-bar production cross section in 920 GeV fixed-target proton-nucleus collisions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 26:3, s. 345-355
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the HERA-B detector, the b (b) over bar production cross section has been measured in 920 GeV proton collisions on carbon and titanium targets. The b (b) over bar production was tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J/psi by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J/psi --> l(+)l(-) decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction. Both e(+)e(-) and mu(+)mu(-) channels have been reconstructed and the combined analysis yields the cross section sigma(b (b) over bar) = 32(-12)(+14)(stat) (+6)(-7)(sys) nb/nucleon.

  • Evolutionary rate and genetic drift of hepatitis C virus are not correlated with the host immune response : Studies of infected donor-recipient clusters
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of Virology. - 0022-538X .- 1098-5514. ; 74:6, s. 2541-2549
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Six donor-recipient clusters of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected individuals were studied. For five clusters the period of infection of the donor could be estimated, and for all six clusters the time of infection of the recipients from the donor via blood transfusion was also precisely known. Detailed phylogenetic analyses were carried out to investigate the genomic evolution of the viral quasispecies within infected individuals in each cluster. The molecular clock analysis showed that HCV quasispecies within a patient are evolving at the same rate and that donors that have been infected for longer time tend to have a lower evolutionary rate. Phylogenetic analysis based on the split decomposition method revealed different evolutionary patterns in different donor-recipient clusters. Reactivity of antibody against the first hypervariable region (HVR1) of HCV in donor and recipient sera was evaluated and correlated to the calculated evolutionary rate. Results indicate that anti-HVR1 reactivity was related more to the overall level of humoral immune response of the host than to the HVR1 sequence itself, suggesting that the particular sequence of the HVR1 peptides is not the determinant of reactivity. Moreover, no correlation was found between the evolutionary rate or the heterogeneity of the viral quasispecies in the patients and the strength of the immune response to HVR1 epitopes, Rather, the results seem to imply that genetic drift is less dependent on immune pressure than on the rate of evolution and that the genetic drift of HCV is independent of the host immune pressure.

  • A simple method for synthesis of organotin species to investigate extraction procedures in sediments by isotope dilution-gas chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry : Part 2. Phenyltin species
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry. - London : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 0267-9477 .- 1364-5544. ; 19:3, s. 368-372
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A rapid method for the synthesis of phenyltin species based on the phenylation of tin iodide was developed and a standard of 124Sn, enriched monophenyltin (MPhT), diphenyltin (DPhT) and triphenyltin (TPhT) was produced. Isotope enriched species were added to and equilibrated with the certified reference material BCR 646 to evaluate different extraction procedures currently in use for the determination of organic tin species in sediments. Samples were measured by gas chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (GC-ICP-MS) with species specific isotope dilution (SSID) calibration. For TPhT measurement results agreed with the certified values for extraction methods using tropolone in diethyl ether alone or in the presence of NaCl and HCl as well as with 50% HBr. However, with 50% HBr, concentrations obtained for DPhT and MPhT were above the upper limit (2) of the certification. The stability of phenyltin species was studied by comparing their signal magnitudes in spike solutions generated directly after derivatisation with those obtained after applying the extraction–derivatisation procedures. Degradation of phenyltin species was matrix dependent and appeared for most of the extraction methods investigated. For water standards and BCR 646, extraction with methanol combined with dichloromethane or methanol combined with acetic acid gave no degradation when applied with less than 20 min ultrasonication. Extraction efficiencies for these two methods were however low for the BCR 646 matrix, in particular for DPhT and MPhT.

  • First evidence for smooth band termination in valence space in the mass 130 region : Spectroscopy of 127La
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813. ; 61:2, s. 213031-213035
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High spin states in 127La have been studied using the 32S(100Mo,p4n) reaction at a beam energy of 155 MeV. Gamma rays were detected using the EUROBALL III spectrometer. One of the side bands in 127La is observed to be populated to a spin of 83/2+. These data are compared with cranked Nilsson-Strutinski calculations which suggest that the structure is a smoothly terminating band, in valence space, based upon a π[(g7/2d5/2)5(h11/2)2]⊗ ν[(g7/2d5/2)12(h11/2)6(d3/2s1/2)2] configuration, which can carry a maximum spin of 47.5ℏ. This is the first identification of such a structure in this mass region.

  • High-spin structures and band termination effects in Cd-104
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899. ; 28:6, s. 1415-1431
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in the neutron-deficient isotope Cd-104 were populated using the Cr-50(Ni-58,4p)Cd-104 reaction at a beam energy of 250 MeV The level scheme has been extended using triple gamma-ray coincidences to a spin of 29h and an excitation energy of 18.2 MeV. Several collective structures involving the excitation of h(11/2) neutrons have been observed to spins approaching 30h. The high-spin structure has been compared to the results of cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations.

  • Techniques for estimating uncertainty propagation in probabilistic design of multilevel systems
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: A collection of technical papers. - Reston, Va. : American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, AIAA. - 1563477165 ; , s. 1893-1902
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In probabilistic design of multilevel systems, the challenge is to estimate uncertainty propagation since outputs of subsystems at lower levels constitute inputs of subsystems at higher levels. Three uncertainty propagation estimation techniques are compared in this paper in terms of numerical efficiency and accuracy: root sum square (linearization), distribution-based moment approximation, and Taguchi-based integration. When applied to simulation-based, multilevel system design optimization under uncertainty, it is investigated which type of applications each method is best suitable for. The probabilistic formulation of the analytical target cascading methodology is used to solve the multilevel problem. A hierarchical bi-level engine design problem is employed to investigate unique features of the presented techniques for uncertainty propagation. This study aims at helping potential users to identify appropriate techniques for their applications. Copyright © 2004 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.
