  • Family of Isoreticular Chiral Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on Coordination and Hydrogen Bonds in [M[Co(ethylenediamine)(oxalato)2]2]
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Crystal Growth & Design. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1528-7483 .- 1528-7505. ; 10:4, s. 1971-1978
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • From the parent compound [Ca[Co(ethylenediamine)(oxalato)2]2]n . 4H2O, 1, a series of framework compounds was prepared via the soluble sodium salt and crystal growth with the divalent metal ions Cd2+, Mn2+, and Sr2+, (2-4). These compounds have the same general formula [M[Co(ethylenediamine)(oxalato)2]2]n . xH2O, and they all form the same four- and eight-connected 3D net having scu topology (and are thus isoreticular) with water filled channels of variable size running in one direction of the crystals. However, they crystallize in two different space groups, the chiral P21) (3, 4, and the low temperature form of 1) and the noncentrosymmetric P-4 (1 and 2). The potential voids upon water removal are 18-20% of the unit cell. Preliminary gas sorption measurements at 298 K and 8 bar show substantial CO2 and N2O uptake (12-14% and 15-16% by mass, respectively), while the H2 uptake was 0.18%, a relatively high value considering the low pressure and high temperature.

  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The 19th century was a time when a large number of voluntary associations were being formed both in Sweden and in Europe as a whole. Their ambition was to engage in health care and poor relief issues as well as in the educational system. Furthermore, the general idea was to promote temperance and foster a sense of thrift among the poor and the working class population. While the starting-point of the thesis was the question as to why the voluntary associations founded various charitable activities as well as how the philanthropy was designed, organised and modified throughout the century, the aim has been to elucidate the motive force and incentives for their social reforms. In order to answer the two main questions of the dissertation, the association De Badande Wännerna (the DBW), which engaged in several philanthropic activities in the Swedish province of Gotland as early as the 1810s, has been selected for a case study. In the literature a number of different reasons have been stressed as to why voluntary associations chose to engage in charitable activities. In order to shed light on what factors that underlay their philanthropic work, the process of negotiation regarding the various institutions established by the DBW, as well as the practical layout of the establishments, have been analysed from the perspectives of a theoretical model based on affinity groups. The study has shown that the incentives of philanthropy were complex. Furthermore, the incentives changed concurrently with the expansion of the public poor relief and educational system, which from the middle of the 19th century took over many of the humanitarian efforts hitherto run by the voluntary associations. The result of this development was that the voluntary associations created new spheres of activity. They continued to fulfil important societal functions, but their establishments also fulfilled a more internal desire for pleasure and delights.

  • Folding without charges

    • Surface charges of proteins have in several cases been found to function as structural gatekeepers, which avoid unwanted interactions by negative design, for example, in the control of protein aggregation and binding. The question is then if side-chain charges, due to their desolvation penalties, play a corresponding role in protein folding by avoiding competing, misfolded traps? To find out, we removed all 32 side-chain charges from the 101-residue protein S6 from Thermus thermophilus. The results show that the charge-depleted S6 variant not only retains its native structure and cooperative folding transition, but folds also faster than the wild-type protein. In addition, charge removal unleashes pronounced aggregation on longer timescales. S6 provides thus an example where the bias toward native contacts of a naturally evolved protein sequence is independent of charges, and point at a fundamental difference in the codes for folding and intermolecular interaction: specificity in folding is governed primarily by hydrophobic packing and hydrogen bonding, whereas solubility and binding relies critically on the interplay of side-chain charges.
