  • Zeolite Beta Formation from Clear Sols : Silicate Speciation, Particle Formation and Crystallization Monitored by Complementary Analysis Methods
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Chemistry - A European Journal. - : Wiley. - 0947-6539. ; 22:43, s. 15307-15319
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The formation of silicate nanoaggregates (NAs) at the very early stages of precursor sols and zeolite beta crystallization from silicate nanoparticles (NPs) are investigated in detail using a combination of different analysis methods, including liquid-state 29Si, 27Al, 14N, and 1H NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry (MS), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy at cryogenic temperatures (cryo-TEM). Prior to hydrothermal treatment, silicate NAs are observed if the Si/OH ratio in the reaction mixture is greater than 1. Condensation of oligomers within the NAs then generates NPs. Aluminum doped into the synthesis mixtures is located exclusively in the NPs, and is found exclusively in a state that is fourfold connected to silicate, favoring their condensation and aggregation. These results are in agreement with general trends observed for other systems. Silicate NAs are essential intermediates for zeolite formation and are generated by the aggregation of hydrated oligomers, aluminate, and templating cations. Subsequent further intra-nanoaggregate silicate condensation results in the formation of NPs. 1H and 14N liquid NMR as well as diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) experiments provide evidence for weakly restricted rotational and translational mobility of the organic template within NAs as a consequence of specific silicate–template interactions. NAs thus appear as key species in clear sols, and their presence in the precursor sol favors silicate condensation and further crystallization, promoted either by increasing the Si/OH ratio or by heating.

  • Electron microscopy imaging of proteins on gallium phosphide semiconductor nanowires
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nanoscale. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2040-3372 .- 2040-3364. ; 8:7, s. 3936-3943
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have imaged GaP nanowires (NWs) incubated with human laminin, serum albumin (HSA), and blood plasma using both cryo-transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron based X-ray photoemission electron microscopy. This extensive imaging methodology simultaneously reveals structural, chemical and morphological details of individual nanowires and the adsorbed proteins. We found that the proteins bind to NWs, forming coronas with thicknesses close to the proteins' hydrodynamic diameters. We could directly image how laminin is extending from the NWs, maximizing the number of proteins bound to the NWs. NWs incubated with both laminin and HSA show protein coronas with a similar appearance to NWs incubated with laminin alone, indicating that the presence of HSA does not affect the laminin conformation on the NWs. In blood plasma, an intermediate sized corona around the NWs indicates a corona with a mixture of plasma proteins. The ability to directly visualize proteins on nanostructures in situ holds great promise for assessing the conformation and thickness of the protein corona, which is key to understanding and predicting the properties of engineered nanomaterials in a biological environment.

  • A meal concept designed for older adults : small enriched meals including dessert
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Food and Nutrition Research. ; :62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The population of older adults is growing and many are at risk of disease-related malnutrition. This is a serious condition which increases the risk for other diseases and distress, human suffering and puts ahigh load on health care costs. Meal concepts tailored to suit the needs of older adults are required to decreasethe incidence of disease-related malnutrition. Objective: To evaluate sensory perception regarding a concept of small, protein and energy-enriched multicomponentmeals designed according to the nutritional needs of older adults.Design: A meal concept of small main courses with complementary desserts and protein and energy-enrichedproducts was evaluated using triangle tests, hedonic evaluation and focus group discussion. Enriched saucesand meals were compared to corresponding commercial products regarding appearance, taste, consistency andoverall acceptance. Results: The concept of a small main course with a complementary dessert was generally perceived as positiveby the target group. The acceptance scores for the enriched meals were generally lower than for the commercialmeals, mainly owing to the packaging of the enriched meals which required covering the food in sauce.Enriched sauces contained approximately 90% more protein than the commercial sauces. However, proteinenrichment affected the sensory properties of the sauces and they were perceived as thicker, creamier and lessflavour-intensive.Conclusions: A concept based on small, protein and energy-enriched meals supplemented with a dessert wasconsidered suitable for increasing the energy and protein intakes of older adults provided that the method ofenrichment ensures attractive sensorial properties.

  • Protein and energy enriched muffins designed for nutritional needs of older adults
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nutrition & Food Sceince. - 2474-767X. ; 2:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Disease related malnutrition is a common problem among older adults which results in human suffering and high health care costs. One way to counteract this condition is to offer appetizing and nutritious food products adapted to the needs of older adults. However, macronutrient enrichment of food products is not straight forward as it affects flavour and texture properties. In this study, muffins were fortified with rape seed oil and whey powder to reach increased fat and/or protein content and the nutritional value, sensory properties and physical parameters were investigated. The results showed that ingredients could be added to significantly increase the energy and protein density, but enrichment affected on appearance and other sensory properties. Extra fat made the muffins flat and moist with a smooth and fatty mouth feel, while whey powder addition resulted in high/pointy muffins with shiny appearance, hard texture and altered flavours. For co-addition of fat and protein the effects of added protein dominated. The specific role of muffin/cake batter compounds, and their transformation during the baking process, needs to be further investigated. Hence, more research is needed in order to offer older adult appealing foods with high energy and nutrient density.

  • Gender clashes and faux pas : The political diaries of Ulla Lindström, Swedish minister in 1954-66
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European journal of life writing. - Amsterdam : VU University Amsterdam. - 2211-243X. ; 5, s. 24-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, as in many other countries, women’s political representation was a contested issue long before 1922, when the first five women entered the Swedish Parliament among 375 male MPs. In general, the few women in top political positions have met resistance both from male colleagues and in the mass media. Biographies and memoirs of political women in different countries from the 1950s until today show a similar pattern: political scandals are more devastating for women than for men; and for women the question of doing gender “right” is often crucial.1 The mass media’s tendency to stereotype female politicians is also immensely influential.2 In this paper the special discourse developed in the Swedish press regarding Ulla Lindström, the only female minister between 1954 and 1966, is scrutinized. The concepts of ‘doing gender’ and ‘gender clash’ are used to analyse how women politicians are constructed as ‘not right’, and to show how women politicians are stereotyped in the press. The question is whether and how the political persona created in the national press corresponded with the political persona created by Ulla Lindström in her political diaries, written during her time as a cabinet minister. These diaries created a sensation when they were published in two books, in 1969 and 1970, partly because they were published such a short time after Lindström’s resignation, partly because the diaries were based on shorthand notes and revealed the internal discussions among members of the government in a way that was unique at that time, both in Sweden and Europe.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gunnel Karlsson, »Gender clashes, clangers and faux pax. Notes on the construction of cabinet minister Ulla Lindström’s political persona«The political diaries of Ulla Lindström caused a great sensation when published in 1966, three years after her resignation as minister without portfolio. She was the only female minister in the Swedish government from 1954 to 1966 and, according to the press, her career had been characterized by faux pas or, as one reviewer of her diaries wrote: »(t)he silly Ulla […] of the botches, bodges, and gaffes«. He added that he himself had helped to put her down »with both malice and recklessness«. Surprised, he found her recently published political diaries impressing, written by an intelligent and humorous politician. He was, however, not the only journalist putting Ulla Lindström down. A particular discourse or way of describing her political persona was developed in the Swedish press during her ministerial career. She started as the good-looking »pin-up girl« of the Parliament and ended up as the »shrew« of the party, the faux pas queen who was too talkative and thus in need of a muzzle. She was constructed as deviant, both as a woman and as a politician. In her political diaries Ulla Lindström herself compared the way in which she and her male colleagues were portrayed in the press. She created her own political persona and tried to show that the political persona created by the press was a false persona, built on prejudices against women and misogyny. In my paper I will compare Lindström’s own political persona with the one created in the press.

  • Modified lipoproteins in periodontitis : a link to cardiovascular disease?
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Bioscience Reports. - : Portland Press. - 0144-8463 .- 1573-4935. ; 39:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a strong association between periodontal disease and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disorders. A key event in the development of atherosclerosis is accumulation of modified lipoproteins within the arterial wall. We hypothesize that patients with periodontitis have an altered lipoprotein profile towards an atherogenic form. Therefore, this study aims at identifying modifications of plasma lipoproteins in periodontitis. Lipoproteins from ten female patients with periodontitis and gender- and age-matched healthy controls were isolated by density-gradient-ultracentrifugation. Proteins were separated by two-dimensional gel-electrophoresis and identified by map-matching or by nano-liquid chromatography followed by mass spectrometry. ApoA-I methionine oxidation, Oxyblot, total antioxidant capacity and a multiplex of 71 inflammation-related plasma proteins were assessed.Reduced levels of apoJ, phospholipid transfer protein, apoF, complement C3, paraoxonase 3 and increased levels of alpha-1-antichymotrypsin, apoA-II, apoC-III were found in HDL from the patients. In LDL/VLDL, the levels of apoL-1 and platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase as well as apo-B fragments were increased. Methionine oxidation of apoA-I was increased in HDL and showed a relationship with periodontal parameters. Alpha-1 antitrypsin and alpha-2-HS glycoprotein were oxidised in LDL/VLDL and antioxidant capacity was increased in the patient group. 17 inflammation-related proteins were important for group separation with the highest discriminating proteins identified as IL-21, Fractalkine, IL-17F, IL-7, IL-1RA and IL-2.Patients with periodontitis have an altered plasma lipoprotein profile, defined by altered protein levels as well as posttranslational and other structural modifications towards an atherogenic form, which supports a role of modified plasma lipoproteins as central in the link between periodontal and cardiovascular disease (CVD).

  • Societal cost of subcutaneous and intravenous trastuzumab for HER2-positive breast cancer – An observational study prospectively recording resource utilization in a Swedish healthcare setting
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Breast. - : Elsevier BV. - 0960-9776. ; 29, s. 140-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction Trastuzumab is part of the standard treatment for HER2-positive breast cancer. The aim of this study was to estimate the societal value of trastuzumab administered through subcutaneous (SC) injection compared to intravenous (IV) infusion. Methods Female patients with HER2-positive breast cancer receiving SC or IV trastuzumab were consecutively enrolled from five Swedish oncology clinics from 2013 to 2015. Data on time and resource utilization was collected prospectively using patient and nurse questionnaires. Societal costs were calculated by multiplying the resource use by its corresponding unit price, including direct medical costs (pharmaceuticals, materials, nurse time, etc.), direct non-medical costs (transportation) and indirect costs (production loss, lost leisure time). Costs were reported separately for patients receiving trastuzumab for the first time and non-first time (“subsequent treatment”). Results In total, 101 IV and 94 SC patients were included in the study. The societal costs were lower with SC administration. For subsequent treatments the cost difference was €117 (IV €2099; SC €1983), partly explained by a higher time consumption both for nurses (14 min) and patients (23 min) with IV administration. Four IV and 16 SC patients received trastuzumab for the first time and were analysed separately, resulting in a difference in societal costs of €897 per treatment. A majority of patients preferred SC to IV administration. Conclusion SC administration resulted in both less direct medical costs and indirect costs, and was consequently less costly than IV administration from a societal perspective in a Swedish setting.

  • Pathophysiology behind prolonged whiplash associated disorders : study protocol for an experimental study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders. - : BMC. - 1471-2474. ; 20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundThere is insufficient knowledge of pathophysiological parameters to understand the mechanism behind prolonged whiplash associated disorders (WAD), and it is not known whether or not changes can be restored by rehabilitation. The aims of the projects are to investigate imaging and molecular biomarkers, cervical kinaesthesia, postural sway and the association with pain, disability and other outcomes in individuals with longstanding WAD, before and after a neck-specific exercise intervention. Another aim is to compare individuals with WAD with healthy controls.MethodsParticipants are a sub-group (n=30) of individuals recruited from an ongoing randomized controlled study (RCT). Measurements in this experimental prospective study will be carried out at baseline (before intervention) and at a three month follow-up (end of physiotherapy intervention), and will include muscle structure and inflammation using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), brain structure and function related to pain using functional MRI (fMRI), muscle function using ultrasonography, biomarkers using samples of blood and saliva, cervical kinaesthesia using the butterfly test and static balance test using an iPhone app. Association with other measures (self-reported and clinical measures) obtained in the RCT (e.g. background data, pain, disability, satisfaction with care, work ability, quality of life) may be investigated. Healthy volunteers matched for age and gender will be recruited as controls (n=30).DiscussionThe study results may contribute to the development of improved diagnostics and improved rehabilitation methods for WAD.Trial registrationClinicaltrial.gov Protocol ID: NCT03664934, initial release 09/11/2018.

  • The Chamber Tombs of San Giovenale and the Funerary Landscapes of South Etruria
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study is the first comprehensive examination of the Etruscan chamber tombs at San Giovenale. By compiling all the published data and conducting a field survey, 290 tombs have now been documented at the site. Of these, 224 have never before been published. The primary purpose of the study is to examine three aspects of the chamber tombs: their architecture, the traces of activities connected with them, and their relationship with the landscape.By comparing the architecture of these 290 tombs to those found at other sites in south Etruria, rough dates can be assigned to them. The earliest securely dated tombs belong to the 7th century BC and the latest to the 4th century BC. The tombs provide evidence that San Giovenale was not abandoned around 500 BC, as some scholars have claimed. The architecture also provides insight into how the tombs were used. Modifications made to the tombs reveal that they were revisited and modified for new uses over several generations, which is confirmed by the already-published pottery. Ramps and stairs leading up to the top of the tombs suggest that activities took place not only inside the chamber but also outside. An analysis of the location of the tombs demonstrates that the earliest ones were positioned on topographically privileged spots such as the edges of plateaus and the tops of hillocks. From the 6th century BC onward, they are also found further down the slopes of the ravines. From as early as the 7th century BC, many different locations at the site were used for burials concurrently. Moreover, the largest tombs are not found grouped together at one location, but rather are scattered among the necropoleis. This spatial organization is likely the result of different families or groups of families each using their own location to bury their dead.
