  • Combination of measurements of the top-quark pair production cross section from the Tevatron Collider
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 89:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We combine six measurements of the inclusive top-quark pair (t(sic)) production cross section (sigma(t)(sic)) from data collected with the CDF and D0 detectors at the Fermilab Tevatron with proton-antiproton collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of up to 8.8 fb(-1). We obtain a value of sigma tt = 7.60 +/- 0.41 pb for a top-quark mass of m(t) = 172.5 GeV. The contributions to the uncertainty are 0.20 pb from statistical sources, 0.29 pb from systematic sources, and 0.21 pb from the uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The result is in good agreement with the standard model expectation of 7.35(-0.33)(+0.28) pb at next-to-next-to-leading order and next-to-next-to leading logarithms in perturbative QCD.

  • Observation of s-Channel Production of Single Top Quarks at the Tevatron
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 112:23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the first observation of single-top-quark production in the s channel through the combination of the CDF and D0 measurements of the cross section in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The data correspond to total integrated luminosities of up to 9.7 fb(-1) per experiment. The measured cross section is sigma(s) = 1.29(-0.24)(+0.26) pb. The probability of observing a statistical fluctuation of the background to a cross section of the observed size or larger is 1.8 x 10(-10), corresponding to a significance of 6.3 standard deviations for the presence of an s-channel contribution to the production of single-top quarks.

  • Constraints on Models for the Higgs Boson with Exotic Spin and Parity in VH -> Vb(b)over-bar Final States
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 113:16, s. 161802-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present constraints on models containing non-standard-model values for the spin J and parity P of the Higgs boson H in up to 9.7 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. These are the first studies of Higgs boson J(P) with fermions in the final state. In the ZH -> llb (b) over bar, WH -> l nu b (b) over barb, and ZH -> nu nu b (b) over bar final states, we compare the standard model (SM) Higgs boson prediction, J(P) = 0(+), with two alternative hypotheses, J(P) = 0(-) and J(P) = 2(+). We use a likelihood ratio to quantify the degree to which our data are incompatible with non-SM J(P) predictions for a range of possible production rates. Assuming that the production rate in the signal models considered is equal to the SM prediction, we reject the J(P) = 0(-) and J(P) = 2(+) hypotheses at the 97.6% CL and at the 99.0% CL, respectively. The expected exclusion sensitivity for a J(P) = 0(-)(J(P) = 2(+)) state is at the 99.86% (99.94%) CL. Under the hypothesis that our data are the result of a combination of the SM-like Higgs boson and either a J(P) = 0(-) or a J(P) = 2(+) signal, we exclude a J(P) = 0(-) fraction above 0.80 and a JP = 2(+) fraction above 0.67 at the 95% CL. The expected exclusion covers J(P) = 0(-)(J(P) = 2(+)) fractions above 0.54 (0.47).

  • Improved b quark jet identification at the D0 experiment
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 763, s. 290-303
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ability to identify jets which originated from b quarks is an important tool of the physics program of the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron p (p) over bar collider. This paper describes a new algorithm designed to select jets originating from b quarks while suppressing the contamination caused by jets from other quark flavors and gluons. Additionally, a new technique, the SystemN method, for determining the misidentification rate directly from data is presented. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 763, s. 442-475
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The calibration of jet energy measured in the DO detector is presented, based on p (p) over bar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider, jet energies are measured using a sampling calorimeter composed of uranium and liquid argon as the passive and active media, respectively. This paper describes the energy calibration of jets performed with gamma+jet, Z+jet and dilet events, with jet transverse momentum p(T) > 6 GeV and pseudorapidity range vertical bar eta vertical bar < 3.6, The corrections are measured separately for data and simulation, achieving a precision of 1.4-1.8% for jets in the central part of the calorimeter ancl up to 3.5% for the jets with pseudorapidity vertical bar eta vertical bar = 3.0. Specific corrections are extracted to enhance the description of jet energy in simulation and in particular of the effects due to the flavor of the parton originating the jet, correcting biases up to 3-4% in jets with low PT originating from gluons and up to 6-8% in jets from b quarks. • Measurement of Associated Production of Z Bosons with Charm Quark Jets in p(p)over-bar Collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 112:4, s. 042001-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the first measurements of the ratios of cross sections sigma(p (p) over bar -> Z + c jet)/sigma(p (p) over bar -> Z + jet) and sigma(p (p) over bar -> Z + jet)/sigma(p (p) over bar -> Z + b jet) for the associated production of a Z boson with at least one charm or bottom quark jet. Jets have transverse momentum p(T)(jet) > 20 GeV and pseudorapidity vertical bar eta(jet)vertical bar < 2.5. These cross section ratios are measured differentially as a function of jet and Z boson transverse momenta, based on 9.7 fb(-1) of p<(p)over bar> collisions collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at root s = 1.96 TeV. The measurements show significant deviations from perturbative QCD calculations and predictions from various event generators.

  • Measurement of differential tt production cross sections in pp collisions
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 90:9, s. 092006-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The production of top quark-antiquark pair events in pp collisions at root s= 1.96 TeV is studied as a function of the transverse momentum and absolute value of the rapidity of the top quarks as well as of the invariant mass of the tt pair. We select events containing an isolated lepton, a large imbalance in transverse momentum, and four or more jets with at least one jet identified as originating from a b quark. The data sample corresponds to 9.7 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity recorded with the D0 detector during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Observed differential cross sections are consistent with standard model predictions.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 737, s. 357-365
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the first measurements of the differential cross section d sigma/dp(T)(gamma) for the production of an isolated photon in association with at least two b-quark jets. The measurements consider photons with rapidities vertical bar y(gamma)vertical bar < 1.0 and transverse momenta 30 < p(T)(gamma) < 200 GeV. The b-quark jets are required to have p(T)(jet) > 15 GeVand vertical bar y(jet)vertical bar < 1.5. The ratio of differential production cross sections for gamma + 2 b-jets to gamma + b-jet as a function of p(T)(gamma) is also presented. The results are based on the proton-antiproton collision data at root s = 1.96 TeV collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The measured cross sections and their ratios are compared to the next- to- leading order perturbative QCD calculations as well as predictions based on the k(T)- factorization approach and those from the sherpa and pythia Monte Carlo event generators.

  • Measurement of the Direct CP-violating Charge Asymmetry in D-s(+/-) -> Phi pi(+/-) Decays
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 112:11, s. 111804-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a measurement of the direct CP-violating charge asymmetry in D-s(+) -> phi pi(+/-) decays where the phi meson decays to K+ K-, using the full Run II data set with an integrated luminosity of 10.4 fb(-1) of proton- antiproton collisions collected using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The normalized difference A(CP) in the yield of D-s(+) and D-s(-) mesons in these decays is measured by fitting the difference between their reconstructed invariant mass distributions. This results in an asymmetry of A(CP) = [-0.38 +/- 0.27]%, which is the most precise measurement of this quantity to date. The result is consistent with the standard model prediction of zero CP asymmetry in this decay.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 90:11, s. 111102-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We measure the direct CP-violating parameter A(CP) for the decay of the charged charm meson, D+ -> K-pi(+)pi(+)(and charge conjugate), using the full 10.4 fb(-1) sample of p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We extract the raw reconstructed charge asymmetry by fitting the invariant mass distributions for the sum and difference of charge-specific samples. This quantity is then corrected for detector-related asymmetries using data-driven methods and for possible physics asymmetries (from B. D processes) using input from Monte Carlo simulation. We measure A(CP) =[-0.16 +/- 0.15(stat) +/- 0.09(syst)] %, which is consistent with zero, as expected from the standard model prediction of CP conservation, and is the most precise measurement of this quantity to date.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 90:5, s. 051101-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a measurement of the electric charge of top quarks using t (t) over bar events produced in p (p) over bar collisions at the Tevatron. The analysis is based on fully reconstructed t (t) over bar pairs in lepton + jets final states. Using data corresponding to 5.3 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity, we exclude the hypothesis that the top quark has a charge of Q = -4/3e at a significance greater than 5 standard deviations. We also place an upper limit of 0.46 on the fraction of such quarks that can be present in an admixture with the standard model top quarks (Q = +2/3e) at a 95% confidence level.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 90:7, s. 072001-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present measurements of the forward-backward asymmetry in the angular distribution of leptons from decays of top quarks and antiquarks produced in proton-antiproton collisions. We consider the final state containing a lepton and at least three jets. The entire sample of data collected by the D0 experiment during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, corresponding to 9.7 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity, is used. The asymmetry measured for reconstructed leptons is A(FB)(l) = (2.9 +/- 2.1(stat.)(-1.7)(+1.5) (syst.))%. When corrected for efficiency and resolution effects within the lepton rapidity coverage of vertical bar y(l)vertical bar < 1.5, the asymmetry is found to be A(FB)(l) = (4.2 +/- 2.3(stat.)(-2.0)(+1.7) (syst.))%. We examine the dependence of A(FB)(l) on the transverse momentum and rapidity of the lepton. Combination with the asymmetry measured in the final states containing two leptons yields A(FB)(l) = (4.2 +/- 2.0(stat.) +/- 1.4(syst.))%. The results are in agreement with predictions from the next-to-leading-order QCD generator MC@NLO, which predicts an asymmetry of A(FB)(l) = 2.0% for vertical bar y(l)vertical bar < 1.5.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry in top quark-antiquark production using the full Tevatron Run II data set collected by the D0 experiment at Fermilab. The measurement is performed in lepton + jets final states using a new kinematic fitting algorithm for events with four or more jets and a new partial reconstruction algorithm for events with only three jets. Corrected for detector acceptance and resolution effects, the asymmetry is evaluated to be A(FB) = (10.6 +/- 3.0)%. Results are consistent with the standard model predictions which range from 5.0% to 8.8%. We also present the dependence of the asymmetry on the invariant mass of the top quark-antiquark system and the difference in rapidities of the top quark and antiquark.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 89:1, s. 012005-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We give a detailed description of the measurement of the W boson mass, M-W, performed on an integrated luminosity of 4.3 fb(-1), which is based on similar techniques as used for our previous measurement done on an independent data set of 1 fb(-1) of data. The data were collected using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. This data set yields 1.68 x 10(6) W -> ev candidate events. We measure the mass using the transverse mass, electron transverse momentum, and missing transverse energy distributions. The M-W measurements using the transverse mass and the electron transverse momentum distributions are the most precise of these three and are combined to give M-W 80.367 +/- 0.013 (stat) +/- 0.022(syst) GeV = 80: 367 +/- 0.026 GeV. When combined with our earlier measurement on 1 fb(-1) of data, we obtain M-W = 80.375 +/- 0.023 GeV.

  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 737, s. 281-294
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an overview of the muon reconstruction and identification methods employed by the DO collaboration to analyze the Run II (2001-2011) p (p) over bar data of the Fermilab Tevatron collider at root s = 1.96 TeV. We discuss the performance of these methods, how it is measured using DO data, and how it is properly modeled by the DO simulation program. In its pseudorapidity acceptance, vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2, the muon system identifies high-p(T) muons (p(T) greater than or similar to 10 GeV) with efficiencies ranging from 72% to 89%. Muons tracks are reconstructed in the DO central tracking system with efficiencies ranging from 85% to 92% and with a typical relative momentum resolution of 10% for p(T) = 40 GeV. Isolation criteria reject multijet background with efficiencies of 87-99%.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the observation of doubly produced J/psi mesons with the D0 detector at Fermilab in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV. The production cross section for both singly and doubly produced J/psi mesons is measured using a sample with an integrated luminosity of 8.1 fb(-1). For the first time, the double J/psi production cross section is separated into contributions due to single and double parton scatterings. Using these measurements, we determine the effective cross section seff, a parameter characterizing an effective spatial area of the parton-parton interactions and related to the parton spatial density inside the nucleon.

  • Study of CP-violating charge asymmetries of single muons and like-sign dimuons in p(p)over-bar collisions
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 89:1, s. 012002-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We measure the inclusive single muon charge asymmetry and the like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry in p (p) over bar collisions using the full data set of 10.4 fb(-1) collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The standard model predictions of the charge asymmetries induced by CP violation are small in magnitude compared to the current experimental precision, so nonzero measurements could indicate new sources of CP violation. The measurements differ from the standard model predictions of CP violation in these asymmetries with a significance of 3.6 standard deviations. These results are interpreted in a framework of B meson mixing within the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa formalism to measure the relative width difference Delta Gamma(d)/Gamma(d) between the mass eigenstates of the B-0 meson system and the semileptonic charge asymmetries a(sl)(d) and a(sl)(s) of B-0 and B-s(0) mesons, respectively.
