    • Since the origin of surface science noble metal{plus 45 degree rule}elemental semiconductor couples have been considered as "prototypical" systems. After three decades of research their structural and electronic properties remain an intriguing maze despite recent advances made, especially thanks to the development of the near-field microscopies and the extensive use of synchrotron radiation in surface crystallography and in high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy. In the last few years, lead, as a replacement inert metal, has nearly gained the pole position in the display of exotic behaviour. This paper gives a flavour of this mystery story and highlights some puzzling questions. © 1994.

  • The structure of Li3Cu2O4, a compound with formal mixed valence

    • The structure of Li3Cu2O4 was solved from X-ray powder diffraction data and refined from a multiphase specimen using the Rietveld method. The cuprate crystallizes in C2/m with Z=2. The compound has a small homogeneity range. Typical parameters are a= 9.946(5) Angstrom, b= 2.778(2) Angstrom, c= 7.260(5) Angstrom and beta= 119.10(2) degrees. The structure may be described as an ordered intergrowth of slabs of Li2CuO2 and hypothetical LiCuO2 of NaCuO2 type. The formula suggests a copper (II,III) mixture, but there is only one crystallographic copper site

  • Orion project : Acceleration of cluster ions and highly charged biomolecules from 10 MeV to 1 GeV

    • Cluster ions-projectiles have been revealed to be very efficient to drive energy or momentum on a solid surface. The impact of massive cluster is able to produce high energy density on a narrow area. Astonishing non linear effect has been observed [1] in the yield of secondary ions emission desorbed from a surface bombarded by molecular or clusters ions. The ORION project consists in accelerating with the Orsay Tandem, cluster ions and in a further step, charged biomolecules, in order to investigate these processes in a velocity range which correspond to their maximum of efficiency (a few keV per mass unit). This paper presents preliminary attemps and first results in creating C 60 and C 70 molecular ion beams using the Orsay Tandem accelerating structure.
