  • Exclusive measurement of two-pion production in the dd -> He-4 pi pi reaction
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474 .- 1873-1554. ; 825:1-2, s. 71-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The results from the first kinematically complete measurement of the dd -> He-4 pi pi reaction are reported. The aim was to investigate a long standing puzzle regarding the origin of the peculiar pi pi-invariant mass distributions appearing in double pion production in light ion collisions, the so-called ABC effect. The measurements were performed at the incident deuteron energies of 712 MeV and 1029 MeV. with the WASA detector assembly at CELSIUS in Uppsala, Sweden. We report the observation of a characteristic enhancement at low pi pi-invariant mass at 712 MeV, the lowest energy yet. At the higher energy, in addition to confirming previous experimental observations, Our results reveal a strong angular dependence of the pions in the overall centre of mass system. The results are qualitatively reproduced by a theoretical model, according to which the ABC effect is described as resulting from a kinematical enhancement in the production of the pion pairs from two parallel and independent NN -> d pi sub-processes. • Production of the omega meson in the pd -> He-3 omega reaction at 1450 MeV and 1360 MeV
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 79:4, s. 044002-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The production of omega mesons in the pd -> He-3 omega reaction has been studied at two energies near the kinematic threshold, T-p = 1450 MeV and T-p = 1360 MeV. The differential cross section was measured as a function of the omega c.m. angle at both energies over the whole angular range. Whereas the results at 1360 MeV are consistent with isotropy, strong rises are observed near both the forward and backward directions at 1450 MeV. Calculations made using a two-step model with an intermediate pion fail to reproduce the shapes of the measured angular distributions and also underestimate the total cross sections.

  • Double-Pionic Fusion of Nuclear Systems and the "ABC" Effect : Approaching a Puzzle by Exclusive and Kinematically Complete Measurements
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 102:5, s. 052301-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ABC effect-a puzzling low-mass enhancement in the pi pi invariant mass spectrum, first observed by Abashian, Booth, and Crowe-is well known from inclusive measurements of two-pion production in nuclear fusion reactions. Here we report on the first exclusive and kinematically complete measurements of the most basic double-pionic fusion reaction pn -> d pi(0)pi(0) at beam energies of 1.03 and 1.35 GeV. The measurements, which have been carried out at CELSIUS-WASA, reveal the ABC effect to be a (pi pi)(I=L=0) channel phenomenon associated with both a resonancelike energy dependence in the integral cross section and the formation of a Delta Delta system in the intermediate state. A corresponding simple s-channel resonance ansatz provides a surprisingly good description of the data.

  • Insomnia is more common among subjects living in damp buildings
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Occup Environ Med. ; 62:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Insomnia is a condition with a high prevalence and a great impact on quality of life. Little is known about the relation between and sleep disturbances and the home environment. AIM: To analyse the association between insomnia and building dampness. METHODS: In a cross-sectional, multicentre, population study, 16 190 subjects (mean age 40 years, 53% women) were studied from Reykjavik in Iceland, Bergen in Norway, Umea, Uppsala, and Goteborg in Sweden, Aarhus in Denmark, and Tartu in Estonia. Symptoms related to insomnia were assessed by questionnaire. RESULTS: Subjects living in houses with reported signs of building dampness (n = 2873) had a higher prevalence of insomnia (29.4 v 23.6%; crude odds ratio 1.35, 95% CI 1.23 to 1.48). The association between insomnia and different indicators of building dampness was strongest for floor dampness: "bubbles or discoloration on plastic floor covering or discoloration of parquet floor" (crude odds ratio 1.96, 95% CI 1.66 to 2.32). The associations remained significant after adjusting for possible confounders such as sex, age, smoking history, housing, body mass index, and respiratory diseases. There was no significant difference between the centres in the association between insomnia and building dampness. CONCLUSION: Insomnia is more common in subjects living in damp buildings. This indicates that avoiding dampness in building constructions and improving ventilation in homes may possibly have a positive effect on the quality of sleep.

  • Polarisation of the omega meson in the pd -> He-3 omega reaction at 1360 and 1450 MeV
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - elsevier : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 668:4, s. 258-262
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The tensor polarisation of omega mesons produced in the pd -> He-3 omega reaction has been studied at two energies near threshold. The 3 He nuclei were detected in coincidence with the pi(0)pi(+)pi(-) or pi(0)gamma decay products of the omega. in contrast to the case of phi-meson production, the omega mesons are found to be unpolarised. This brings into question the applicability of the Okubo-Zweig-lizuka rule when comparing the production of vector mesons in low energy hadronic reactions.

  • Measurement of eta meson decays into lepton-antilepton pairs
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. Particles and fields. - : American Physical Society. - 0556-2821 .- 1089-4918. ; 77:3, s. 032004-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A search for rare lepton decays of the eta meson was performed using the WASA detector at CELSIUS. Two candidates for double Dalitz decay eta -> e(+)e(-)e(+)e(-) events are reported with a background of 1.3 +/- 0.2 events. This allows to set an upper limit to the branching ratio of 9.7x10(-5) (90% CL). The branching ratio for the decay eta -> e(+)e(-)gamma is determined to (7.8 +/- 0.5(stat)+/- 0.8(syst))x10(-3) in agreement with world average value. An upper limit (90% CL) for the branching ratio for the eta -> e(+)e(-) decay is 2.7x10(-5) and a limit for the sum of the eta ->mu(+)mu(-)mu(+)mu(-) and eta ->pi(+)pi(-)mu(+)mu(-) decays is 3.6x10(-4).

  • Calcium ion exchange in crystalline gelsolin
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Molecular Biology. - England : Academic Press. - 0022-2836 .- 1089-8638. ; 357:3, s. 773-782
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gelsolin is a calcium and pH-sensitive modulator of actin filament length. Here, we use X-ray crystallography to examine the extraction and exchange of calcium ions from their binding sites in different crystalline forms of the activated N and C-terminal halves of gelsolin, G1-G3 and G4-G6, respectively. We demonstrate that the combination of calcium and low pH activating conditions do not induce conformational changes in G4-G6 beyond those elicited by calcium alone. EGTA is able to remove calcium ions bound to the type I and type II metal ion-binding sites in G4-G6. Constrained by crystal contacts and stabilized by interdomain interaction surfaces, the gross structure of calcium-depleted G4-G6 remains that of the activated form. However, high-resolution details of changes in the ion-binding sites may represent the initial steps toward restoration of the arrangement of domains found in the calcium-free inactive form of gelsolin in solution. Furthermore, bathing crystals with the trivalent calcium ion mimic, Tb3+, results in anomalous scattering data that permit unequivocal localization of terbium ions in each of the proposed type I and type II ion-binding sites of both halves of gelsolin. In contrast to predictions based on solution studies, we find that no calcium ion is immune to exchange.

  • Bone Age Progression during the First Year of Growth Hormone Therapy in Pre-Pubertal Children with Idiopathic Growth Hormone Deficiency, Turner Syndrome or Idiopathic Short Stature, and in Short Children Born Small for Gestational Age: Analysis of Data from KIGS (Pfizer International Growth Database)
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Horm Res. ; 63:1, s. 40-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background/Aims: The beneficial effects of growth hormone (GH) therapy on statural growth in children are well established, but the effects on skeletal maturation are less clear. The progression of bone age (BA) was therefore studied during the first year of GH treatment in pre-pubertal children with idiopathic GH deficiency (GHD), Turner syndrome (TS) or idiopathic short stature (ISS), and in short pre-pubertal children born small for gestational age (SGA). Methods: Cross-sectional data on 2,209 short children with idiopathic GHD, 694 with TS, 569 with ISS and 153 with SGA were analysed. Longitudinal data were also analysed from 308 children with idiopathic GHD, 99 with TS, 57 with ISS and 29 with SGA. All patients included in the study were enrolled in KIGS (Pfizer International Growth Database) and were being treated with recombinant human GH (Genotropin((R))). BA was assessed using the Greulich and Pyle method at baseline and after 1 year of GH therapy. Results: In all groups of patients the mean progression of BA was 1 year during the year of GH therapy, although there was considerable individual variation. Progression of BA was not correlated with chronological age, BA, height SD score (SDS) or body mass index SDS at the onset of GH therapy. There was also no consistent effect of the GH dose on BA progression. Conclusion: Progression of BA appears to be normal in patients receiving GH in these diagnostic groups, at least over the first year of treatment in pre-puberty. Copyright (c) 2005 S. • Epitope Analysis of GAD65 Binding in both Cord Blood and at the Time of Clinical Diagnosis of Childhood Type 1 Diabetes.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Hormone and Metabolic Research. - : Georg Thieme Verlag KG. - 1439-4286 .- 0018-5043. ; 39:11, s. 790-796
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The GAD65 epitope immunoglobulin binding pattern in cord blood of children (n=37), who later developed type 1 diabetes at 3.2-14.9 years of age, was analyzed. First, the binding at diagnosis was compared with that in the cord blood serum. The next comparison was between the cord blood serum and the mothers' serum taken at delivery. Basal GAD65 binding levels were determined in Protein A Sepharose-based radio-binding assays with S-35-labeled human and rat GAD65, rat GAD67 and GAD65/67 fusion proteins representing N-terminal (N), middle (M) and C-terminal (C) epitopes. In the first comparison, 28/37 children had GAD65 binding above 2.44 relative units (RU) (upper three quartiles), representing a marked increase from birth in the binding to human GAD65 (p < 0.0001), rat GAD65 (p < 0.0001), N- (p = 0.04), M- (p < 0.0001), C- (p=0.001), and M + C-epitopes (p < 0.0001), but not to rat GAD67. At birth, 9/37 had GAD65 binding above 1.56 RU (upper quartile) demonstrating that their binding of human S-35-GAD65 was higher in cord blood than in the mother (p=0.008). Higher cord blood binding was also observed for the N- (p=0.02) terminal epitope but not for rat GAD65, rat GAD67, and the remaining epitopes. These data suggest that differences in the epitope GAD65 binding between mother and child at birth are limited. In contrast, the epitope pattern at diagnosis differed from that at birth, supporting the view that disease-associated epitopes develop between birth and diagnosis.
