  • New μs Isomers in the Neutron-rich 210Hg Nucleus
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 725:4-5, s. 292-296
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutron-rich nuclei in the lead region, beyond N = 126, have been studied at the FRS-RISING setup at GSI, exploiting the fragmentation of a primary uranium beam. Two isomeric states have been identified in Hg-210: the 8(+) isomer expected from the seniority scheme in the vg(9/2) shell and a second one at low spin and low excitation energy. The decay strength of the 8(+) isomer confirms the need of effective three-body forces in the case of neutron-rich lead isotopes. The other unexpected low-lying isomer has been tentatively assigned as a 3(-) state, although this is in contrast with theoretical expectations. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Core-coupled states and split proton-neutron quasiparticle multiplets in Ag122-126
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 87:3, s. 034308-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutron-rich silver isotopes were populated in the fragmentation of a Xe-136 beam and the relativistic fission of U-238. The fragments were mass analyzed with the GSI Fragment Separator and subsequently implanted into a passive stopper. Isomeric transitions were detected by 105 high-purity germanium detectors. Eight isomeric states were observed in Ag122-126 nuclei. The level schemes of Ag-122,Ag-123,Ag-125 were revised and extended with isomeric transitions being observed for the first time. The excited states in the odd-mass silver isotopes are interpreted as core-coupled states. The isomeric states in the even-mass silver isotopes are discussed in the framework of the proton-neutron split multiplets. The results of shell-model calculations, performed for the most neutron-rich silver nuclei are compared to the experimental data.

  • Isomeric Decay Spectroscopy of the 217Bi Isotope
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 90:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structure of the neutron-rich bismuth isotope 217Bi has been studied for the first time. The fragmentation of a primary 238U beam at the FRS-RISING setup at GSI was exploited to perform γ-decay spectroscopy, since μs isomeric states were expected in this nucleus. Gamma rays following the decay of a t1/2=3 μs isomer were observed, allowing one to establish the low-lying structure of 217Bi. The level energies and the reduced electric quadrupole transition probability B(E2) from the isomeric state are compared to large-scale shell-model calculations.

  • New Isomers in the Full Seniority Scheme of Neutron-rich Lead Isotopes: The Role of Effective Three-body Forces
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 109:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The neutron-rich lead isotopes, up to Pb-216, have been studied for the first time, exploiting the fragmentation of a primary uranium beam at the FRS-RISING setup at GSI. The observed isomeric states exhibit electromagnetic transition strengths which deviate from state-of-the-art shell-model calculations. It is shown that their complete description demands the introduction of effective three-body interactions and two-body transition operators in the conventional neutron valence space beyond Pb-208.

  • Isomer spectroscopy of (127)Cd
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 82:3, s. 034323-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The spin and configurational structure of excited states of (127)Cd, the two-proton and three-neutron hole neighbor of (132)Sn, has been studied. An isomeric state with a half-life of 17.5(3) mu s was populated in the fragmentation of a (136)Xe beam on a (9)Be target at a beam energy of 750 MeV/u. Time distributions of the delayed gamma transitions and gamma gamma coincidence relations were exploited to construct a decay scheme. The observed yrast (19/2)(+) isomer is proposed to have dominant configurations of nu(h(11/2)(-3))pi(g(9/2)(-1), p(1/2)(-1)), nu(h(11/2)(-2)d(3/2)(-1))pi(g(9/2)(-2)), and nu(h(11/2)(-2), s(1/2)(-1))pi(g(9/2)(-2)) and to decay by two competing stretched M2 and E3 transitions. Experimental results are compared with the isotone (129)Sn. The new information provides input for the proton-neutron interaction and the evolution of neutron hole energies in nuclei around the doubly magic (132)Sn core.

  • First observation of the decay of a 15(-) seniority v=4 isomer in Sn-128
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 83:4, s. 044328-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Isomeric states in the semimagic Sn128-130 isotopes were populated in the fragmentation of a Xe-136 beam on a Be-9 target at an energy of 750 A.MeV. The decay of an isomeric state in Sn-128 at an excitation energy of 4098 keV has been observed. Its half live has been determined to be T-1/2 = 220(30) ns from the time distributions of the delayed gamma rays emitted in its decay. gamma gamma coincidence relations were analyzed in order to establish the decay pattern of the newly established state toward the known (7(-)) and (10(+)) isomers at excitation energies of 2092 and 2492 keV, respectively. Based on a comparison with results of state-of-the-art shell-model calculations the new isomeric state is proposed to have the nu h(11/2)(-3)d(3/2)(-1) configuration with the four neutron holes in Sn-132 maximally aligned to a total spin of I-pi = 15(-).

  • First Measurement of Beta Decay Half-lives in Neutron-rich Tl and Bi Isotopes
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 715:4-5, s. 293-297
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutron-rich isotopes around lead, beyond N = 126, have been studied exploiting the fragmentation of an uranium primary beam at the FRS-RISING setup at GSI. For the first time beta-decay half-lives of Bi-219 and Tl-211,Tl-212,Tl-213 isotopes have been derived. The half-lives have been extracted using a numerical simulation developed for experiments in high-background conditions. Comparison with state of the art models used in r-process calculations is given, showing a systematic underestimation of the experimental values, at variance from close-lying nuclei. • Beta Decay of 102Y Produced in Projectile Fission of 238U
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6596 .- 1742-6588. ; 381
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The population of 102Zr following the β decay of 102Y produced in the projectile fission of 238U at the GSI facility in Darmstadt, Germany has been studied. 102Y is known to ß decay into 102Zr via two states, one of high spin and the other low spin. These states preferentially populate different levels in the 102Zr daughter. In this paper the intensities of transitions in 102Zr observed are compared with those from the decay of the low-spin level studied at the TRISTAN facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory and of the high-spin level studied at the JOSEF separator at the Kernforschungsanlage Jülich.

  • β-decay Studies of Neutron-rich Tl, Pb, and Bi Isotopes
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 89:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fragmentation of relativistic uranium projectiles has been exploited at the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung laboratory to investigate the β decay of neutron-rich nuclei just beyond 208Pb. This paper reports on β-delayed γ decays of 211–213Tl, 215Pb, and 215–219Bi de-exciting states in the daughters 211–213Pb, 215Bi, and 215–219Po. The resulting partial level schemes, proposed with the help of systematics and shell-model calculations, are presented. The role of allowed Gamow-Teller and first-forbidden β transitions in this mass region is discussed.

  • Surface treatment of nanoporous silicon with noble metal ions and characterizations
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: APPLIED SURFACE SCIENCE. - : Elsevier Science B.V., Amsterdam.. - 0169-4332. ; 256:13, s. 4231-4240
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A very large surface to volume ratio of nanoporous silicon (PS) produces a high density of surface states, which are responsible for uncontrolled oxidation of the PS surface. Hence it disturbs the stability of the material and also creates difficulties in the formation of a reliable electrical contact. To passivate the surface states of the nanoporous silicon, noble metals (Pd, Ru, and Pt) were dispersed on the PS surface by an electroless chemical method. GIXRD (glancing incidence X-ray diffraction) proved the crystallinity of PS and the presence of noble metals on its surface. While FESEM (field emission scanning electron microscopy) showed the morphology, the EDX (energy dispersive X-ray) line scans and digital X-ray image mapping indicated the formation of the noble metal islands on the PS surface. Dynamic SIMS (secondary ion mass spectroscopy) further confirmed the presence of noble metals and other impurities near the surface of the modified PS. The variation of the surface roughness after the noble metal modification was exhibited by AFM (atomic force microscopy). The formation of a thin oxide layer on the modified PS surface was verified by XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy).

  • ENHANCED 0(g.s.)(+) -> 2(1)(+) E2 TRANSITION STRENGTH IN Sn-112,Sn-114
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica B. - 0587-4254. ; 42:3-4, s. 813-816
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The poorly known B(E2; 0(+) -> 2(+)) values of Sn-112 and Sn-114 have been measured to high precision. Two Coulomb excitation experiments were performed to determine the reduced transition probabilities relative to Sn-116 in order to minimize the systematic errors. The obtained B(E2 up arrow) values of 0.242(8) e(2)b(2) for Sn-112 and 0.232(8) e(2)b(2) for Sn-114 confirm the tendency of large B(E2 up arrow) values for the lighter tin isotopes below the midshell Sn-116 that has been observed recently in various radioactive ion beam experiments.

  • Excited states in the neutron-rich nucleus F-25
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 89:5, s. 054323-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structure of the nucleus F-25(9) was investigated through in-beam. gamma-ray spectroscopy of the fragmentation of Ne-26 and Na-27,Na-28 ion beams. Based on the particle-gamma and particle-gamma gamma coincidence data, a level scheme was constructed and compared with shell model and coupled-cluster calculations. Some of the observed states were interpreted as quasi-single-particle states built on top of the closed-shell nucleus O-24, while the others were described as states arising from coupling of a single proton to the 2(broken vertical bar) core excitation of O-24.

  • Tuning of dielectric properties and magnetism of SrTiO3 by site-specific doping of Mn
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 84:12, s. 125124-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Combining experiments with first-principles calculations, we show that site-specific doping of Mn into SrTiO(3) has a decisive influence on the dielectric properties of these doped systems. We find that phonon contributions to the dielectric constant invariably decrease sharply on doping at any site. However, a sizable, random dipolar contribution only for Mn at the Sr site arises from a strong off-centric displacement of Mn in spite of Mn being in a non-d(0) state; this leads to a large dielectric constant at higher temperatures and gives rise to a relaxor ferroelectric behavior at lower temperatures. We also investigate magnetic properties in detail and critically reevaluate the possibility of a true multiglass state in such systems.

  • Near-Room-Temperature Colossal Magnetodielectricity and Multiglass Properties in Partially Disordered La2NiMnO6
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 108:12, s. 127201-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report magnetic, dielectric, and magnetodielectric responses of the pure monoclinic bulk phase of partially disordered La2NiMnO6, exhibiting a spectrum of unusual properties and establish that this compound is an intrinsically multiglass system with a large magnetodielectric coupling (8%-20%) over a wide range of temperatures (150-300 K). Specifically, our results establish a unique way to obtain colossal magnetodielectricity, independent of any striction effects, by engineering the asymmetric hopping contribution to the dielectric constant via the tuning of the relative-spin orientations between neighboring magnetic ions in a transition-metal oxide system. We discuss the role of antisite (Ni-Mn) disorder in emergence of these unusual properties.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Understanding the Geological and Medical Interface of Arsenic, As 2012 - 4th International Congress: Arsenic in the Environment. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 9780415637633 ; , s. 505-507
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates the Arsenic (As) concentration in different types of brown rice grain and assesses As exposure and non-cancer health risk from rice consumption. Daily Intake (DI rice) and Hazard Quotient (HQ) from rice were calculated for the people who are consuming these type of rice. Daily intake value of As from rice was compared with previous WHO recommended Provisional Tolerable Daily Intake value (PTDI) of 2.1 ÎŒg/day/kg bw to understand which kind of rice may pose potential health risk. Hazard quotient (HQ) was determined to understand the potential non-cancer health risk of the people who are consuming these rice. This study indicates that for SB brown rice consumer in 29% cases DI rice exceeds the previous PTDI value and 100% cases HQ value exceeds 1.

  • Efficient Ablation of Genes in Human Hematopoietic Stem and Effector Cells using CRISPR/Cas9.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Cell Stem Cell. - : Elsevier BV. - 1934-5909. ; 15:5, s. 643-652
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Genome editing via CRISPR/Cas9 has rapidly become the tool of choice by virtue of its efficacy and ease of use. However, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing in clinically relevant human somatic cells remains untested. Here, we report CRISPR/Cas9 targeting of two clinically relevant genes, B2M and CCR5, in primary human CD4(+) T cells and CD34(+) hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs). Use of single RNA guides led to highly efficient mutagenesis in HSPCs but not in T cells. A dual guide approach improved gene deletion efficacy in both cell types. HSPCs that had undergone genome editing with CRISPR/Cas9 retained multilineage potential. We examined predicted on- and off-target mutations via target capture sequencing in HSPCs and observed low levels of off-target mutagenesis at only one site. These results demonstrate that CRISPR/Cas9 can efficiently ablate genes in HSPCs with minimal off-target mutagenesis, which could have broad applicability for hematopoietic cell-based therapy.

  • Role of human DNA glycosylase Nei-like 2 (NEIL2) and single strand break repair protein polynucleotide kinase 3'-phosphatase in maintenance of mitochondrial genome.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The Journal of biological chemistry. - 1083-351X. ; 287:4, s. 2819-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The repair of reactive oxygen species-induced base lesions and single strand breaks (SSBs) in the nuclear genome via the base excision (BER) and SSB repair (SSBR) pathways, respectively, is well characterize, and important for maintaining genomic integrity. However, the role of mitochondrial (mt) BER and SSBR proteins in mt genome maintenance is not completely clear. Here we show the presence of the oxidized base-specific DNA glycosylase Nei-like 2 (NEIL2) and the DNA end-processing enzyme polynucleotide kinase 3'-phosphatase (PNKP) in purified human mitochondrial extracts (MEs). Confocal microscopy revealed co-localization of PNKP and NEIL2 with the mitochondrion-specific protein cytochrome c oxidase subunit 2 (MT-CO2). Further, chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis showed association of NEIL2 and PNKP with the mitochondrial genes MT-CO2 and MT-CO3 (cytochrome c oxidase subunit 3); importantly, both enzymes also associated with the mitochondrion-specific DNA polymerase γ. In cell association of NEIL2 and PNKP with polymerase γ was further confirmed by proximity ligation assays. PNKP-depleted ME showed a significant decrease in both BER and SSBR activities, and PNKP was found to be the major 3'-phosphatase in human ME. Furthermore, individual depletion of NEIL2 and PNKP in human HEK293 cells caused increased levels of oxidized bases and SSBs in the mt genome, respectively. Taken together, these studies demonstrate the critical role of NEIL2 and PNKP in maintenance of the mammalian mitochondrial genome.
