  • Continuous Class-E Power Amplifier Modes
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II: Express Briefs. - 1549-7747 .- 1558-3791. ; 59:11, s. 731-735
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this brief, a continuum of novel closed-form solutions is derived for class-E power amplifiers (PAs). It is analytically proven that the class-E zero voltage/zero voltage derivative switching conditions can be satisfied for an arbitrarily selected reactive second harmonic switch impedance (Z 2 S ). The higher order harmonic currents are terminated capacitively. The conventional class-E, class- E/F 2 , and class-EF 2 modes are thus subsets of the continuum. The arbitrary selection of Z 2 S enables robust waveform engineering for performance optimization in specific applications. Furthermore, the theoretical derivation provides important possibilities for wideband class-E PA synthesis. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

  • Contrasting lipid biomarkers in mountain rivers in the Nepal Himalayas : Organic matter characteristics and contribution to the fluvial carbon pool
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Geoscience Frontiers. - Beijing : China University of Geosciences. - 1674-9871. ; 12:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Nepal Himalayas is the source of many glacial and spring-fed river systems crisscrossing the mountainous terrain. There is an increasing recognition of small mountain rivers (SMRs) to have a significant combined export of dissolved and particulate organic carbon to the global carbon flux. We analyzed fluvial sediments from two SMRs and compared the results with two large mountain rivers (LMRs) in Nepal. We investigated the organic matter (OM), its compositional variability, and seasonal export using a suite of lipid biomarkers, namely n-alkanes, n-alkanoic acids, n-alkanols, and sterols. The SMRs indicated a similarity in lipid distribution and were affected by a strong seasonal variability. The LMRs showed a distinct contrast in the distribution of lipids in suspended sediments. Bedload sediments in SMRs were derived from diverse sources with weak terrigenous dominance all-year-round compared to the suspended load. Functional lipids (n-alkanoic acids and n-alkanols) were the major constituents in SMR sediments, indicating better preservation. In contrast, n-alkane concentration dominated over other fractions in suspended sediments retrieved from LMRs. The biomarker trends differentiate SMRs from LMRs with lower transformed/degraded OM in SMRs. A common observation was the strong presence of even carbon compounds in short-chain n-alkanes in SMR bedload sediments and their predominance in suspended sediments in LMRs. Such an unusual trend is attributed to specific biomarker sources from the catchment and ongoing processes in fluvial systems. Topsoil colonized by fungal species under moist acidic conditions and autochthonous bacteria contributes to the organic matter pool in shallow SMRs. In LMRs, the contribution from thermally mature sedimentary hydrocarbons and the diagenetic reduction of nalkanoic acids to n-alkanes are additional contributors to the allochthonous carbon pool. The differences in lipid concentrations, their distribution, seasonality, and the size of rivers suggest differential preservation/degradation of the organic matter pool and their importance in contributing to the carbon budget. • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 78:4, s. 044328-1-044328-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states of the extremely neutron-deficient nucleus At-197 have been studied in an in-beam experiment using the fusion-evaporation reaction Sn-118(Kr-82,p2n)At-197. gamma rays belonging to At-197 feeding the I-pi=(9/2(-)) ground state, as well as gamma rays feeding the 311-keV I-pi=(13/2(+)) isomer, decaying via the emission of gamma rays, and the 52-keV I-pi=(1/2(+)) alpha-decaying isomer have been identified using the recoil-alpha-decay tagging technique. Total Routhian surface calculations predict a near-spherical shape for the (9/2(-)) ground state and oblate shapes with beta(2) around -0.2 for the (1/2(+)) and the (13/2(+)) states. These predictions agree with our experimental findings.

  • Individuals with Metabolically Healthy Overweight/Obesity Have Higher Fat Utilization than Metabolically Unhealthy Individuals
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nutrients. - : MDPI AG. - 2072-6643. ; 8:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The mechanisms underlying the change in phenotype from metabolically healthy to metabolically unhealthy obesity are still unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate whether a difference in fasting fat utilization exists between overweight/obese individuals with a favorable cardiovascular risk profile and those with Metabolic Syndrome and Type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, we sought to explore whether there is an association between fasting fat utilization and insulin resistance. In this cross-sectional study, 172 overweight/obese individuals underwent a nutritional assessment. Those with fasting glucose >= 126 mg/dL or antidiabetic treatment were considered to be diabetics. If at least three of the NCEP criteria were present, they had Metabolic Syndrome, while those with less criteria were considered to be healthy overweight/obese. An indirect calorimetry was performed to estimate Respiratory Quotient, an index of nutrient utilization. A lower Respiratory Quotient (i.e., higher fat utilization) was found in healthy overweight/obese individuals than in those with Metabolic Syndrome and Type 2 diabetes (0.85 +/- 0.05; 0.87 +/- 0.06; 0.88 +/- 0.05 respectively, p = 0.04). The univariate and multivariable analysis showed a positive association between the Respiratory Quotient and HOMA-IR (slope in statistic (B) = 0.004; beta = 0.42; p = 0.005; 95% Confidence interval = 0.001-0.006). In this study, we find, for the first time, that the fasting Respiratory Quotient is significantly lower (fat utilization is higher) in individuals who are metabolically healthy overweight/obese than in those with metabolically unhealthy obesity. In addition, we demonstrated the association between fat utilization and HOMA-IR, an insulin resistance index.

  • Rewarding behavior with a sweet food strengthens its valuation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: PLoS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 16:4 April
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweet foods are commonly used as rewards for desirable behavior, specifically among children. This study examines whether such practice may contribute to reinforce the valuation of these foods. Two experiments were conducted, one with children, the other with rats. The first study, conducted with first graders (n = 214), shows that children who receive a food reward for performing a cognitive task subsequently value the food more compared to a control group who received the same food without performing any task. The second study, conducted on rats (n = 64), shows that rewarding with food also translates into higher calorie intake over a 24-hour period. These results suggest that the common practice of rewarding children with calorie-dense sweet foods is a plausible contributing factor to obesity and might therefore be ill advised. © 2021 This is an open access article, free of all copyright, and may be freely reproduced, distributed, transmitted, modified, built upon, or otherwise used by anyone for any lawful purpose. • Analysis and computational study of several integer programming formulations for minimum-energy multicasting in wireless ad hoc networks
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Networks. - : Wiley. - 0028-3045 .- 1097-0037. ; 52:2, s. 57-68
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A multicast session in a wireless ad hoc network concerns routing messages from a source to a set of destination devices. Transmitting messages consumes energy at the source and intermediate devices of the session. Since a battery is the only energy source in many applications of wireless ad hoc networks, energy efficiency is an important performance measure of multicasting. In this paper, we present and analyze integer programming models for the problem of minimizing the total energy required by multicasting. We start from a straightforward multicommodity flow model, which is strengthened by a more efficient representation of transmission power. Further strengthening is accomplished by lifting the capacity constraints of the model. We then present cut-based models for the problem, and prove, from a bounding standpoint, the equivalence in strength between these models and their flow-based counterparts. By expanding the underlying graph, we show that the problem can be transformed into finding a minimum Steiner arborescence. The expanded graph arises also in the separation procedure for solving one of the cut-based models. In addition to a theoretical analysis of the relation between various models, we perform extensive computational experiments to study the numerical strengths of these models and their efficiency in solving the problem. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

  • The role of accounting for managing innovation processes when relationships matter
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IMP Journal. - : Emerald. - 0809-7259. ; 11:1, s. 7-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies how accounting information is used by actors in an innovation process. It investigates how accounting information influences and is influenced by the different actors. The purpose of this paper is to develop a more thorough understanding of the role of accounting in making the choices that form temporary solutions.Design/methodology/approachAn in-depth case study of the development of a standard software release within the telecom industry.FindingsThis study has shown that accounting was a key ingredient when temporary solutions were formed in the innovation processes. Actors used accounting to stabilize the content of the release in the formation of the gate documents and used accounting to destabilize the content between the temporary solutions. It is difficult to evaluate whether the use of accounting improved or harmed the innovation. Further, the study also revealed that the use of accounting influenced and was influenced by previous and prospective future deals. This put new challenges on the use of accounting because it involved negotiation processes that influenced the accounting figures.Practical implicationsThe findings provide insights into the procedures for finding temporary solutions in the innovation process and the role of accounting in these procedures.Originality/valueThis paper contributes by providing a more thorough understanding of the role of accounting regarding the choices that comprise the temporary solutions within the innovation process. In addition, it shows how accounting has a critical role both for settling on and modifying temporary solutions. Hence, the research demonstrated how studies of the role of accounting in innovation processes can contribute to the industrial network approach by giving a more thorough understanding of network dynamics and the process of attaining stability and instability in business networks.

  • Decrease of the atrial fibrillatory rate, increased organization of the atrial rhythm and termination of atrial fibrillation by AZD7009
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electrocardiology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1532-8430 .- 0022-0736. ; 46:1, s. 29-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The atrial fibrillatory rate (APR), on AZD7009 as compared to placebo, was investigated as a potential biomarker for electrophysiological effect in early antiarrhythmic drug development. Methods: Patients with permanent AF received infusions of AZD7009 and placebo in an exploratory two-way, single-blind, randomized cross-over study. The ECG was continuously recorded, and following QRST cancellation the APR, its standard deviation (SD), the exponential decay and the atrial electrogram amplitude were determined as 3-min averages. Results: The mean APR rapidly decreased by 43% from baseline (394 +/- 38 to 225 +/- 61 fibrillations/min, p = 0.0003) on AZD7009, but not on placebo. The SD of the AFR and the exponential decay decreased in parallel. In 2 of 8 patients, termination of AF occurred after the APR had decreased by 58% and 53%, respectively. Conclusions: The APR may potentially serve as a biomarker of electrophysiological effects in early evaluation of rhythm control agents. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

  • A Complementary View for Better Understanding the Term Computational Thinking
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Conference on Computational Thinking Education 2018. - Hong Kong : The Education University of Hong Kong. - 9789887703457 ; , s. 2-7
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The term Computational Thinking is closely related to efforts connected to teach a systematic and well-structured way of problem solving that includes a set of tools and techniques used in Computer Science. While substantial research in this field has shown promising outcomes concerning distinct intervention programs and teaching initiatives, the term Computational Thinking itself requires to be revised in order to get a wider consensus about its meaning and purpose. This paper contributes to the ongoing quest concerning the definition of the term by starting with a fundamental perspective on computational theory and corresponding concepts in order to describe the theoretical building blocks of a systematic view to further elaborate on an approach for teaching and learning about Computational Thinking. Additionally, based on this foundational effort, more advanced concepts are presented and discussed in order to better understand this domain. Finally, the paper identifies and discusses a set of relevant challenges taking a cognitive psychology perspective on Computational Thinking.

  • The Changing Face of Arctic Snow Cover: A Synthesis of Observed and Projected Changes
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Ambio: a Journal of Human Environment. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0044-7447. ; 40, s. 17-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Analysis of in situ and satellite data shows evidence of different regional snow cover responses to the widespread warming and increasing winter precipitation that has characterized the Arctic climate for the past 40-50 years. The largest and most rapid decreases in snow water equivalent (SWE) and snow cover duration (SCD) are observed over maritime regions of the Arctic with the highest precipitation amounts. There is also evidence of marked differences in the response of snow cover between the North American and Eurasian sectors of the Arctic, with the North American sector exhibiting decreases in snow cover and snow depth over the entire period of available in situ observations from around 1950, while widespread decreases in snow cover are not apparent over Eurasia until after around 1980. However, snow depths are increasing in many regions of Eurasia. Warming and more frequent winter thaws are contributing to changes in snow pack structure with important implications for land use and provision of ecosystem services. Projected changes in snow cover from Global Climate Models for the 2050 period indicate increases in maximum SWE of up to 15% over much of the Arctic, with the largest increases (15-30%) over the Siberian sector. In contrast, SCD is projected to decrease by about 10-20% over much of the Arctic, with the smallest decreases over Siberia (<10%) and the largest decreases over Alaska and northern Scandinavia (30-40%) by 2050. These projected changes will have far-reaching consequences for the climate system, human activities, hydrology, and ecology.

  • Applying Bayesian hierarchical modelling to assess the speed of goal side selection in a soccer related penalty shot task
  • 2023
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditionally, psychophysical data is modelled by fitting individual curves to each participant’s data and then by statistical analysis of the extracted parameters. A now viable alternative to this traditional two-stage approach is Bayesian hierarchical modelling (BHM). BHM allows for modelling all of the data and all of the parameters in one-step rather than two. Here, BHM is used to analyse the speed of participants’ binary goal side selections in a soccer related penalty shot task. Participants viewed realistic images of a soccer goal and goalkeeper, and chose which side of the goal to best score. Analogous to the visual line bisection task, we (Pereira & Patching, 2021, Perceptual and Motor Skills, 128, 2279-2303) systematically repositioned the goalkeeper from left to right along the goal line and, to simulate changes in the viewing position of the kicker, lateral position of the goalmouth in each image. Scaling response times in terms of signed response speed shows a close linear correspondence with log odds ratios (logit) of left goal side selection. Overall, participants tended to choose the left- over right-goal side, but both the speed and direction of this tendency depended on the goalkeeper’s position and lateral position of the goalmouth relative to participants’ body midline. Current analysis of signed response speed shows a similar pattern of results as binary response probability complementing our earlier analysis of binary goal side selection in the present penalty shot task.

  • Anxiety, Sleep Problems, and Vigorous Physical Activity : Bidirectional Associations from Early Adolescence to Early Adulthood in Swedish Adolescents
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Youth and Adolescence. - 0047-2891 .- 1573-6601. ; 53:6, s. 1355-1369
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Anxiety symptoms and sleep problems typically emerge during adolescence and are frequently intertwined. However, there is a dearth of knowledge concerning their reciprocal influence and whether physical activity might play a protective role in this relationship. The present study aims at filling this gap exploring also the moderating role of sex. 915 13-year-old Swedish adolescents (56% girls) answered a survey conducted four times: at ages 13 (T1), 16 (T2), 19 (T3), and 22 (T4). A random intercept cross-lagged panel model was used. At within-levels, sleep problems and anxiety symptoms had a bidirectional positive association in middle adolescence. Vigorous physical activity and anxiety symptoms showed a reciprocal negative association from middle adolescence. Vigorous physical activity and sleep problems were reciprocally associated only in late adolescence. Associations were the same for girls and boys. This study demonstrated that the relations between anxiety symptoms, sleep problems, and vigorous physical activity cannot be understood without adopting a developmental perspective and that middle adolescence is a crucial period to plan interventions to reduce anxiety symptoms and sleep problems.

  • Energy efficiency as a wicked problem
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI AG. - 2071-1050. ; 11:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Together with increased shares of renewable energy supply, improved energy efficiency is the foremost means of mitigating climate change. However, the energy efficiency potential is far from being realized, which is commonly explained by the existence of various barriers to energy efficiency. Initially mentioned by Churchman, the term wicked problems became established in the 1970s, meaning a kind of problem that has a resistance to resolution because of incomplete, contradictory, or changing requirements. In the academic literature, wicked problems have later served as a critical model in the understanding of various challenges related to society, such as for example climate change mitigation. This aim of this paper is to analyze how the perspective of wicked problems can contribute to an enhanced understanding of improved energy efficiency. The paper draws examples from the manufacturing sector. Results indicate that standalone technology improvements as well as energy management and energy policy programs giving emphasis to standalone technology improvements may not represent a stronger form of a wicked problem as such. Rather, it seems to be the actual decision-making process involving values among the decision makers as well as the level of needed knowledge involved in decision-making that give rise to the wickedness. The analysis shows that wicked problems arise in socio-technical settings involving several components such as technology, systems, institutions, and people, which make post-normal science a needed approach.
