  • Introducing the CTA concept
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Astroparticle physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0927-6505 .- 1873-2852. ; 43, s. 3-18

    • The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a new observatory for very high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. CTA has ambitions science goals, for which it is necessary to achieve full-sky coverage, to improve the sensitivity by about an order of magnitude, to span about four decades of energy, from a few tens of GeV to above 100 TeV with enhanced angular and energy resolutions over existing VHE gamma-ray observatories. An international collaboration has formed with more than 1000 members from 27 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America. In 2010 the CTA Consortium completed a Design Study and started a three-year Preparatory Phase which leads to production readiness of CTA in 2014. In this paper we introduce the science goals and the concept of CTA, and provide an overview of the project. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • FERMI LARGE AREA TELESCOPE FIRST SOURCE CATALOG
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0067-0049 .- 1538-4365. ; 188:2, s. 405-436
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a catalog of high-energy gamma-ray sources detected by the Large Area Telescope (LAT), the primary science instrument on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi), during the first 11 months of the science phase of the mission, which began on 2008 August 4. The First Fermi-LAT catalog (1FGL) contains 1451 sources detected and characterized in the 100 MeV to 100 GeV range. Source detection was based on the average flux over the 11 month period, and the threshold likelihood Test Statistic is 25, corresponding to a significance of just over 4 sigma. The 1FGL catalog includes source location regions, defined in terms of elliptical fits to the 95% confidence regions and power-law spectral fits as well as flux measurements in five energy bands for each source. In addition, monthly light curves are provided. Using a protocol defined before launch we have tested for several populations of gamma-ray sources among the sources in the catalog. For individual LAT-detected sources we provide firm identifications or plausible associations with sources in other astronomical catalogs. Identifications are based on correlated variability with counterparts at other wavelengths, or on spin or orbital periodicity. For the catalogs and association criteria that we have selected, 630 of the sources are unassociated. Care was taken to characterize the sensitivity of the results to the model of interstellar diffuse gamma-ray emission used to model the bright foreground, with the result that 161 sources at low Galactic latitudes and toward bright local interstellar clouds are flagged as having properties that are strongly dependent on the model or as potentially being due to incorrectly modeled structure in the Galactic diffuse emission.

  • FERMI OBSERVATIONS OF HIGH-ENERGY GAMMA-RAY EMISSION FROM GRB 090217A
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: ASTROPHYS J LETT. - 2041-8205. ; 717:2, s. L127-L132
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Fermi observatory is advancing our knowledge of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) through pioneering observations at high energies, covering more than seven decades in energy with the two on-board detectors, the Large Area Telescope (LAT) and the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM). Here, we report on the observation of the long GRB 090217A which triggered the GBM and has been detected by the LAT with a significance greater than 9 sigma. We present the GBM and LAT observations and on-ground analyses, including the time-resolved spectra and the study of the temporal profile from 8 keV up to similar to 1 GeV. All spectra are well reproduced by a Band model. We compare these observations to the first two LAT-detected, long bursts GRB 080825C and GRB 080916C. These bursts were found to have time-dependent spectra and exhibited a delayed onset of the high-energy emission, which are not observed in the case of GRB 090217A. We discuss some theoretical implications for the high-energy emission of GRBs.

  • DETECTION OF A SPECTRAL BREAK IN THE EXTRA HARD COMPONENT OF GRB 090926A
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 729:2, s. 114-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the observation of the bright, long gamma-ray burst, GRB 090926A, by the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor and Large Area Telescope (LAT) instruments on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. GRB 090926A shares several features with other bright LAT bursts. In particular, it clearly shows a short spike in the light curve that is present in all detectors that see the burst, and this in turn suggests that there is a common region of emission across the entire Fermi energy range. In addition, while a separate high-energy power-law component has already been observed in other gamma-ray bursts, here we report for the first time the detection with good significance of a high-energy spectral break (or cutoff) in this power-law component around 1.4 GeV in the time-integrated spectrum. If the spectral break is caused by opacity to electron-positron pair production within the source, then this observation allows us to compute the bulk Lorentz factor for the outflow, rather than a lower limit.

  • Fermi observations of GRB 090510 : A short-hard gamma-ray burst with an additional, hard power-law component from 10 keV to GeV energies
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 716:2, s. 1178-1190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present detailed observations of the bright short-hard gamma-ray burst GRB 090510 made with the Gammaray Burst Monitor (GBM) and Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi observatory. GRB 090510 is the first burst detected by the LAT that shows strong evidence for a deviation from a Band spectral fitting function during the prompt emission phase. The time-integrated spectrum is fit by the sum of a Band function with E-peak = 3.9 +/- 0.3 MeV, which is the highest yet measured, and a hard power-law component with photon index -1.62 +/- 0.03 that dominates the emission below approximate to 20 keV and above approximate to 100 MeV. The onset of the high-energy spectral component appears to be delayed by similar to 0.1 s with respect to the onset of a component well fit with a single Band function. A faint GBM pulse and a LAT photon are detected 0.5 s before the main pulse. During the prompt phase, the LAT detected a photon with energy 30.5(-2.6)(+5.8) GeV, the highest ever measured from a short GRB. Observation of this photon sets a minimum bulk outflow Lorentz factor, Gamma greater than or similar to 1200, using simple.. opacity arguments for this GRB at redshift z = 0.903 and a variability timescale on the order of tens of ms for the approximate to 100 keV-few MeV flux. Stricter high confidence estimates imply Gamma greater than or similar to 1000 and still require that the outflows powering short GRBs are at least as highly relativistic as those of long-duration GRBs. Implications of the temporal behavior and power-law shape of the additional component on synchrotron/synchrotron self-Compton, external-shock synchrotron, and hadronic models are considered.

  • MAGIC reveals a complex morphology within the unidentified gamma-ray source HESS J1857+026
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 571
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims. HESS J1857+026 is an extended TeV gamma-ray source that was discovered by H. E. S. S. as part of its Galactic plane survey. Given its broadband spectral energy distribution and its spatial coincidence with the young energetic pulsar PSR J1856+0245, the source has been put forward as a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) candidate. MAGIC has performed follow-up observations aimed at mapping the source down to energies approaching 100 GeV in order to better understand its complex morphology. Methods. HESS J1857+026 was observed by MAGIC in 2010, yielding 29 h of good quality stereoscopic data that allowed us to map the source region in two separate ranges of energy. Results. We detected very-high-energy gamma-ray emission from HESS J1857+026 with a significance of 12 sigma above 150 GeV. The differential energy spectrum between 100 GeV and 13 TeV is described well by a power law function dN/dE = N-0(E/1TeV)(-Gamma) with N-0 = (5.37 +/- 0.44(stat) +/- 1.5(sys)) X 10(-12) (TeV-1 cm(-2) s(-1)) and Gamma = 2.16 +/- 0.07(stat) +/- 0.15(sys), which bridges the gap between the GeV emission measured by Fermi-LAT and the multi-TeV emission measured by H.E.S.S.. In addition, we present a detailed analysis of the energy-dependent morphology of this region. We couple these results with archival multiwavelength data and outline evidence in favor of a two-source scenario, whereby one source is associated with a PWN, while the other could be linked with a molecular cloud complex containing an HII region and a possible gas cavity.

  • Past changes in the vertical distribution of ozone - Part 1: Measurement techniques, uncertainties and availability
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Measurement Techniques. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1867-1381 .- 1867-8548. ; 7:5, s. 1395-1427
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Peak stratospheric chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) and other ozone depleting substance (ODS) concentrations were reached in the mid- to late 1990s. Detection and attribution of the expected recovery of the stratospheric ozone layer in an atmosphere with reduced ODSs as well as efforts to understand the evolution of stratospheric ozone in the presence of increasing greenhouse gases are key current research topics. These require a critical examination of the ozone changes with an accurate knowledge of the spatial (geographical and vertical) and temporal ozone response. For such an examination, it is vital that the quality of the measurements used be as high as possible and measurement uncertainties well quantified. In preparation for the 2014 United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)/World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion, the SPARC/IO3C/IGACO-O3/NDACC (SI2N) Initiative was designed to study and document changes in the global ozone profile distribution. This requires assessing long-term ozone profile data sets in regards to measurement stability and uncertainty characteristics. The ultimate goal is to establish suitability for estimating long-term ozone trends to contribute to ozone recovery studies. Some of the data sets have been improved as part of this initiative with updated versions now available. This summary presents an overview of stratospheric ozone profile measurement data sets (ground and satellite based) available for ozone recovery studies. Here we document measurement techniques, spatial and temporal coverage, vertical resolution, native units and measurement uncertainties. In addition, the latest data versions are briefly described (including data version updates as well as detailing multiple retrievals when available for a given satellite instrument). Archive location information for each data set is also given.

  • Recommendations for standardization and phenotype definitions in genetic studies of osteoarthritis: the TREAT-OA consortium
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Osteoarthritis and Cartilage. - : Elsevier BV. - 1063-4584. ; 19:3, s. 254-264
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To address the need for standardization of osteoarthritis (OA) phenotypes by examining the effect of heterogeneity among symptomatic (SOA) and radiographic osteoarthritis (ROA) phenotypes. Methods: Descriptions of OA phenotypes of the 28 studies involved in the TREAT-OA consortium were collected. We investigated whether different OA definitions result in different association results by creating various hip OA definitions in one large population based cohort (the Rotterdam Study I (RSI)) and testing those for association with gender, age and body mass index using one-way ANOVA. For ROA, we standardized the hip-, knee- and hand ROA definitions and calculated prevalence's of ROA before and after standardization in nine cohort studies. This procedure could only be performed in cohort studies and standardization of SOA definitions was not feasible at this moment. Results: In this consortium, all studies with SOA phenotypes (knee, hip and hand) used a different definition and/or assessment of OA status. For knee-, hip- and hand ROA five, four and seven different definitions were used, respectively. Different hip ROA definitions do lead to different association results. For example, we showed in the RSI that hip OA defined as "at least definite joint space narrowing (JSN) and one definite osteophyte" was not associated with gender (P=0.22), but defined as "at least one definite osteophyte" was significantly associated with gender (P=3 x 10(-9)). Therefore, a standardization process was undertaken for ROA definitions. Before standardization a wide range of ROA prevalence's was observed in the nine cohorts studied. After standardization the range in prevalence of knee- and hip ROA was small. Conclusion: Phenotype definitions influence the prevalence of OA and association with clinical variables. ROA phenotypes within the TREAT-OA consortium were standardized to reduce heterogeneity and improve power in future genetics studies. (C) 2010 Osteoarthritis Research Society International. • Meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies confirms a susceptibility locus for knee osteoarthritis on chromosome 7q22
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases. - : BMJ. - 1468-2060 .- 0003-4967. ; 70:2, s. 349-355
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent form of arthritis and accounts for substantial morbidity and disability, particularly in older people. It is characterised by changes in joint structure, including degeneration of the articular cartilage, and its aetiology is multifactorial with a strong postulated genetic component. Methods A meta-analysis was performed of four genome-wide association (GWA) studies of 2371 cases of knee OA and 35 909 controls in Caucasian populations. Replication of the top hits was attempted with data from 10 additional replication datasets. Results With a cumulative sample size of 6709 cases and 44 439 controls, one genome-wide significant locus was identified on chromosome 7q22 for knee OA (rs4730250, p = 9.2 x 10(-9)), thereby confirming its role as a susceptibility locus for OA. Conclusion The associated signal is located within a large (500 kb) linkage disequilibrium block that contains six genes: PRKAR2B (protein kinase, cAMP-dependent, regulatory, type II, beta), HPB1 (HMG-box transcription factor 1), COG5 (component of oligomeric golgi complex 5), GPR22 (G protein-coupled receptor 22), DUS4L (dihydrouridine synthase 4-like) and BCAP29 (B cell receptor-associated protein 29). Gene expression analyses of the (six) genes in primary cells derived from different joint tissues confirmed expression of all the genes in the joint environment.

  • Criterion for dendrite fragmentation of steel under imposition of linear traveling EMS
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 2010 International Conference on Advances in Materials and Manufacturing Processes, ICAMMP 2010. - 9780878492015 ; , s. 84-91
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the fragmentation theory of T. Campanella et al, the local remelting of dendrite arms is induced by the solute-rich fluid flow. Based on this theory, the effects of linear EMS intensity and solute content on CET of steel are investigated. The conclusions are as follows: The criterion for dendrite fragmentation under linear EMS is derived based on dendrite fragmentation theory by T. Campanella et al. And the criterion is verified with steel experiments. It is valid for steel under the Linear EMS. Investigation is carried out on relation between critical volume fraction of solid and solute content at the time of dendrite fragmentation (CET occurrence). It is concluded that critical volume fraction of solid is small with low EMS intensity and it decreases with the increase of solute content (C, Mn). The reason is that it causes that flow in the mushy zone becomes small which leads to CET occurrence difficult.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Dongbei Daxue Xuebao/Journal of Northeastern University. - 1005-3026. ; 31:12, s. 1717-1720+1732
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To investigate the effect of travelling electromagnetic field on dendrite fragmentation in solidification process, the 0.22 wt%~0.34 wt%C steel was tested for its solidifying behavior in travelling electromagnetic field. Observing the solidification structures of casting blanks under different magnetic flux density, the distributions of secondary dendrite arm spacing were investigated and the functional relationship between secondary dendrite arm spacing and cooling rate in solidification was discussed, as well as the effect of travelling electromagnetic field on the columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) position. The solidification rate and solid fraction when CET occurs were calculated. The critical conditions for dendrite fragmentation in travelling electromagnetic field is derived and verified by the testing results of low carbon steel. Thus, the relationship between the average velocity of the liquid-phase and the critical solid volume fraction when CET occurs was obtained.

  • The recent state of the climate : Driving components of cloud-type variability
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research. - 0148-0227 .- 2156-2202. ; 116:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To reduce the Earth's radiation budget uncertainty related to cloud types' changes, and better understand the climate constraints resulting from long-term clouds' variability, frequent and finer (than actually existing) observations are necessary. This is one of the aims of future satellite programs such as the Global Change Observation Mission-Climate (GCOM-C) satellite, to be launched by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). To facilitate the transition from past to future observations, the actual state of climate variables (e.g., cloud types) needs to be evaluated. This evaluation is attempted in the present work with the analysis of long-term cloud types' distribution and amounts. The data set used for this study is 25 years (1982-2006) of global daytime cloud properties observed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration- Advanced Very-High-Resolution Radiometer (NOAA-AVHRR) satellites sensors. Though various calibrations have been applied on NOAA-AVHRR data, the effects of the orbit drift experienced by these satellites need to be corrected. A signal processing decomposition method allowing the filtering of the cloud types' amount trend affected by the orbit drift is used to perform the necessary corrections. The results obtained show a quantifiable improvement of the cloud amount estimation and trends of the individual NOAA satellites initial observations, at the global and regional scales. The corrected global cloud amount shows a slight decrease in its linear trend. The driving factors of this trend are the decrease in mid and low clouds overwhelming the increase in high clouds (+0.04% cloud amount/yr). A comparison with other cloud climatology studies such as the International Cloud Satellite Climatology Project (ISCCP) data set shows that the global cloud decrease noticed in NOAA-AVHRR's data is smaller. And, contrary to the NOAA-AVHRR's data, the driving force of the ISCCP linear trend is a sharp decrease in low clouds (-0.20% cloud amount/yr).

  • Improved quantification of small hearts for gated myocardial perfusion imaging
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1619-7070 .- 1619-7089. ; 40:8, s. 1163-1170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In patients with a small heart, defined as an end-systolic volume (ESV) of a parts per thousand currency sign20 mL calculated using the Quantitative Gated SPECT (QGS) program, underestimation of ESV and overestimation of ejection fraction (EF) using gated myocardial perfusion imaging are considered errors caused by inappropriate delineation of the left ventricle (LV). The aim of this study was to develop a new method for delineation of the LV and to evaluate it in studies using a digital phantom, normal subjects and patients. The active shape-based method for LV delineation, EXINI heart (ExH), was adjusted to more accurately process small hearts. In small hearts, due to the partial volume effect and the short distance to the opposite ventricular wall, the endocardial and the epicardial surfaces are shifted in the epicardial direction depending on the midventricular volume. The adjusted method was evaluated using digital XCAT phantoms with Monte Carlo simulation (8 virtual patients), a Japanese multicentre normal database (69 patients) and consecutive Japanese patients (116 patients). The LV volumes, EF and diastolic parameters derived from ExH and QGS were compared. The digital phantom studies showed a mean ESV of 87 % +/- 9 % of the true volume calculated using ExH and 22 % +/- 18 % calculated using QGS. In the normal database, QGS gave higher EFs in women than in men (71.4 +/- 6.0 % vs. 67.2 +/- 6.0 %, p = 0.0058), but ExH gave comparable EFs (70.7 +/- 4.9 % and 71.4 +/- 5 % in men and women, respectively, p = ns). QGS gave higher EFs in subjects with a small heart than in those with a normal-sized heart (74.5 +/- 5.1 % vs. 66.1 +/- 4.9 %), but ExH gave comparable values (70.0 +/- 5.9 % vs. 71.6 +/- 4.2 %, respectively, p = ns). In consecutive patients, the average EFs with QGS in patients with ESV > 20 mL, 11-20 mL and a parts per thousand currency sign10 mL were 57.9 %, 71.9 % and 83.2 %, but with ExH the differences among these groups were smaller (65.2 %, 67.8 % and 71.5 %, respectively). The volume-dependent edge correction algorithm was able to effectively reduce the effects on ESV and EF of a small heart. The uniform normal values might be applicable to both men and women and to both small and normal-sized hearts.

  • DIRECT CONFIRMATION OF THE ASYMMETRY OF THE CAS A SUPERNOVA WITH LIGHT ECHOES
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 732:1, s. 3-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the first detection of asymmetry in a supernova (SN) photosphere based on SN light echo (LE) spectra of Cas A from the different perspectives of dust concentrations on its LE ellipsoid. New LEs are reported based on difference images, and optical spectra of these LEs are analyzed and compared. After properly accounting for the effects of finite dust-filament extent and inclination, we find one field where the He I lambda 5876 and Ha features are blueshifted by an additional similar to 4000 km s(-1) relative to other spectra and to the spectra of the Type IIb SN 1993J. That same direction does not show any shift relative to other Cas A LE spectra in the Ca II near-infrared triplet feature. We compare the perspectives of the Cas A LE dust concentrations with recent three-dimensional modeling of the SN remnant (SNR) and note that the location having the blueshifted He I and Ha features is roughly in the direction of an Fe-rich outflow and in the opposite direction of the motion of the compact object at the center of the SNR. We conclude that Cas A was an intrinsically asymmetric SN. Future LE spectroscopy of this object, and of other historical SNe, will provide additional insight into the connection of the explosion mechanism to SN then to SNR, as well as give crucial observational evidence regarding how stars explode.

  • Ingår i: Developmental Cell. - : Elsevier BV. - 1534-5807 .- 1878-1551. ; 21:6, s. 1144-1155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plant cells are connected through plasmodesmata (PD), membrane-lined channels that allow symplastic movement of molecules between cells. However, little is known about the role of PD-mediated signaling during plant morphogenesis. Here, we describe an Arabidopsis gene, CALS3/GSL12. Gain-of-function mutations in CALS3 result in increased accumulation of callose (beta-1,3-glucan) at the PD, a decrease in PD aperture, defects in root development, and reduced intercellular trafficking. Enhancement of CALS3 expression during phloem development suppressed loss-of-function mutations in the phloem abundant callose synthase, CALS7 indicating that CALS3 is a bona fide callose synthase. CALS3 alleles allowed us to spatially and temporally control the PD aperture between plant tissues. Using this tool, we are able to show that movement of the transcription factor SHORT-ROOT and microRNA1 65 between the stele and the endodermis is PD dependent. Taken together, we conclude that regulated callose biosynthesis at PD is essential for cell signaling.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: MCWASP XIII. ; , s. 012063-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A multiphase microsegregation model for the solidification of multicomponent alloys that experience a peritectic transformation is developed. It is based on a volume averaging method. Coupling is achieved among the conservation equations for total mass, solute mass and energy. The diffusion in extradendritic and several interdendritic liquid and solid phases, the growth kinetics of the dendritic and peritectic solidifying microstructures, as well as the velocities of the solid/liquid and solid/solid phase interfaces are considered in the model. The model is applied to the dendritic and peritectic solidification of a Fe-C-Cr alloy. Equilibrium between phases at the interface is taken into account and computed using a thermodynamic software. The occurrence of several recalescences due to the growth of the microstructure and the peritectic transformation are predicted and the solidification behaviors near recalescence are evaluated. By adjusting the parameters, the lever rule (LR), Gulliver-Scheil (GS) and partial equilibrium (PE) approximations are retrieved.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: MCWASP XIII. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). ; , s. 012093-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A coupled Cellular Automaton-Finite Volume (CA-FV) model is developed for the prediction of macrosegregation and solidification microstructure of an Al-Si binary alloy under unidirectional solidification. The enthalpy, concentration and velocities are calculated at FV scale following macroscopic fluid flow, heat and solute transfer equations. The temperature and solid fraction are updated at CA scale from both the energy balance and the nucleation, grain growth under fluid flow and entrapment procedure with the help of microsegregation approximation. The variables at FV and CA sites exchange information through topological relations. The recalescence and the inter- and intra-granular segregation during solidification are predicted. The effects of thermal/solutal buoyancy and the grain structure on molten natural convection and the segregation pattern are also analyzed. Verification of the model has been done using the previous experimental solidification morphologies by other researchers.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: MCWASP XIII. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). ; , s. 012061-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The solidification path and precipitation of carbides in the Fe-C-V-Cr-Mo-W high speed steel system are predicted with the help of thermodynamic equilibrium calculations. The Partial Equilibrium (PE) approximation is favoured. According to experimental data for high speed steel samples, the precipitating solidification sequence of carbides, including nature, composition and amount are discussed as a function of the nominal composition of C and V. The results show that the solidification path can be reasonably predicted by the Partial Equilibrium approximation for cooling rate lower than 10 K min -1. The experimental results suffer from the sensitivity limitation of the characterization methods used when the phase fraction becomes too small.

    • A coupled cellular automaton-finite volume (CA-FV) model for macroscopic fluid flow, heat transfer, solute transport and microscopic nucleation and grain growth procedure was developed and applied in an Al-Si binary alloy solidification process. The model reflects the dendrite growth kinetics in the presence of fluid flow, the nucleation and growth in CA scale due to the increase of undercooling, and the feedback of solid fraction and temperature to FV nodes due to the nucleation and growth. The coupled CA-FV model can predict the recalescence and the intergranular segregation during alloy solidification process, which shows great advantages compared with the results by FV model and CA-FV model without fluid flow. The effects of fluid flow on the solute distribution and the solidification morphologies, as well as the influence of ingot size on the solidification structures, were discussed with the CA-FV model.
