Influence of springy impact interface and curved drill rods on energy transfer in percussive rock drilling

- The influence of springy impact interface and of curved drill rods on energy transfer in percussive rock drilling was studied. Analytical models for pneumatic and hydraulic rock drills were introduced, in which the springy piston-rod impact interface was taken into account. A nonlinear model for the springy impact interface was also implemented in a computer simulation program for percussive rock drilling systems. Laboratory tests were performed and the experimental results were compared with the results by three theoretical models. The agreement between theoretical and experimental incident stress waves was found to be satisfactory. The factors affecting the rock drilling efficiency were analysed. For the hydraulic rock drills investigated, it was found that a springy impact interface slightly decreases the drilling efficiency. For pneumatic rock drills, however, the analysis showed that an appropriate springy impact interface might increase the drilling efficiency significantly. The reflection and transmission of harmonic stress waves at a constant curvature bend of an ilifinite uniform bar was analysed theoretically. The energy fluxes of the reflected and transmitted extensional and flexural waves were obtained for an incident wave which may be either extensional or flexural. Results are shown in polar radiation diagrams for an incident extensional wave. It was found that for bends of small angles, the radius of curvature has little effect on the transmission of extensional stress waves and a significant amount of extensional wave energy is transmitted through the bends. Furthermore, the efficiency of percussive rock drilling with a bent drill rod was investigated using a combined approach of FFT and matrix method. In percussive rock drilling with slightly bent rods (bend angle up to 100), it was found that the efficiency is practically the same as with straight rods. It was also found that the efficiency can remain high even if the rod is significantly bent (bend angle up to 30°).

- Part of the launch of issue 14 of PARSE journal, "Krabstadt Education Center: Conflated Places" this conversation addresses a range of topics, such as conflicts, toolboxes, being stuck, and access to education by making a link between the "KEC"universe (Jeuno JEKim) and the EU-funded collective research and study programme "Teaching to Transgress Toolbox", collaboratively undertaken by three European art schools between 2019-22. (EvaWeinmayr). In contrast, Krabstadt Education Center (KEC) is based in Krabstadt, afictional town in the Arctic where the Nordic Countries have sent their unwanted people and problems. Recently, Krabstadt has absorbed an influx of unemployed artists with PhDs, burned-out artist-teachers/teacher-artists, andinstitutionally stuck creatures. The dialogue tries to come to terms with the histories, the visions and the daily challenges of the two educational experiments.

- Fueled by an increasing demand for computational power and high data-rate low-latency on-board communication, the automotive electrical and electronic architectures are evolving from distributed to consolidated domain and centralised architectures. Future electrical and electronic automotive architectures are envisioned to leverage heterogeneous computing platforms, where several different processing units will be embedded within electronic control units. These powerful control units are expected to be connected by high-bandwidth and low-latency on-board backbone networks. This paper draws on the industrial collaboration with the Swedish automotive industry for tackling the challenges associated to the model-based development of predictable embedded software for contemporary and evolving automotive E/E architectures.

Laser-driven proton acceleration from ultrathin foils with nanoholes

- Structured solid targets are widely investigated to increase the energy absorption of high-power laser pulses so as to achieve efficient ion acceleration. Here we report the first experimental study of the maximum energy of proton beams accelerated from sub-micrometric foils perforated with holes of nanometric size. By showing the lack of energy enhancement in comparison to standard flat foils, our results suggest that the high contrast routinely achieved with a double plasma mirror does not prevent damaging of the nanostructures prior to the main interaction. Particle-in-cell simulations support that even a short scale length plasma, formed in the last hundreds of femtoseconds before the peak of an ultrashort laser pulse, fills the holes and hinders enhanced electron heating. Our findings reinforce the need for improved laser contrast, as well as for accurate control and diagnostics of on-target plasma formation.

- Recent deep learning-based light field disparity estimation algorithms require millions of parameters, which demand high computational cost and limit the model deployment. In this paper, an investigation is carried out to analyze the effect of depthwise separable convolution and ghost modules on state-of-the-art EPINET architecture for disparity estimation. Based on this investigation, four convolutional blocks are proposed to make the EPINET architecture a fast and light-weight network for disparity estimation. The experimental results exhibit that the proposed convolutional blocks have significantly reduced the computational cost of EPINET architecture by up to a factor of 3.89, while achieving comparable disparity maps on HCI Benchmark dataset.

- Recent magnetic-resonance work on Y-Z suggests that this species exhibits considerable motional flexibility in its functional site and that its phenol oxygen is not involved in a well-ordered hydrogen-bond interaction (Tang et al., submitted; Tommos et al., in press). Both of these observations are inconsistent with a simple electron-transfer function for this radical in photosynthetic water oxidation. By considering the roles of catalytically active amino acid radicals in other enzymes and recent data on the water-oxidation process in Photosystem II, we rationalize these observations by suggesting that Y-Z functions to abstract hydrogen atoms from aquo- and hydroxy-bound manganese ions in the (Mn)(4) cluster on each S-state transition. The hydrogen-atom abstraction process may occur either by sequential or concerted kinetic pathways. Within this model, the (Mn)(4)/Y-Z center forms a single catalytic center that comprises the Oxygen Evolving Complex in Photosystem II.

Advancing citizenship through language arts education : Conceptions of rhetoric in Scandinavian national curricula

- Scandinavian countries have a long tradition of widespread public schooling linked to civic education. In the most recent curriculum reforms, concepts from rhetoric appear in various forms in language arts subject curricula from primary to upper-secondary school. In this article, we examine how current Scandinavian curricula reflect rhetoric and rhetorical education through content analysis based on David Fleming’s update of the classical triad in rhetorical education. We examine explicit and implicit references to rhetorical art, practice, and inquiry to gain insight into how rhetoric is reflected and conceptualized in national curricula, thereby providing a nuanced outlook for future research on the rhetorical turn of education. The analysis shows that the curricula for language arts subjects in all Scandinavian countries include several key components of contemporary rhetorical education, and in Swedish and Norwegian curricula, rhetoric is also explicitly linked to the development of democratic citizenship. However, references to rhetoric in curricula documents are sometimes implicit, and the explicit references that are present might give the impression that rhetoric should be taught only as a technical skill devoid of context or as critical text analysis.

Invariance of Topological Indices Under Hilbert Space Truncation

- We show that the topological index of a wave function, computed in the space of twisted boundary phases, is preserved under Hilbert space truncation, provided the truncated state remains normalizable. If truncation affects the boundary condition of the resulting state, the invariant index may acquire a different physical interpretation. If the index is symmetry protected, the truncation should preserve the protecting symmetry. We discuss implications of this invariance using paradigmatic integer and fractional Chern insulators, Z(2) topological insulators, and spin-1 Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki and Heisenberg chains, as well as its relation with the notion of bulk entanglement. As a possible application, we propose a partial quantum tomography scheme trom which the topological index of a generic multicomponent wave function can be extracted by measuring only a small subset of wave function components, equivalent to the measurement of a bulk entanglement topological index.

- Background: Low heart rate recovery (HRR) at exercise test and the metabolic syndrome (MetS) are both predictors of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. We studied in 75-year-old women and men, representative of the general population, the relationship between (1) HRR and the MetS, (2) HRR and the individual components of the MetS, and (3) HRR and insulin sensitivity. Methods: A cross-sectional study of randomly selected 75-year-olds from a general population was performed (191 women and 194 men). The MetS was defined according to the National Cholesterol Education Program criteria. Heart rate was measured as beats per minute immediately after exercise and at 4 minutes into recovery. Results: Heart rate recovery (median and interquartile range, beat/min) was 48 (37-58) for women and 49 (38-58) for men. Thirty-seven percent of the women and 25% of the men had the MetS. Heart rate recovery was 52 (42-61) for women with the MetS and 42 (31-49) for those without. The corresponding values for men was 50 (39-61) and 47 (35-54); the difference between individuals with and without the MetS was significant for women (P < .001) but not for men (P = .084). The following significant correlation coefficients between HRR and MetS components were found: for women, waist circumference (-0.43, P < .001), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (0.37, P < .001), insulin sensitivity (-0.37, P < .001), fasting plasma glucose (-0.30, P < .001), and triglycerides (-0.24, P = .001); for men, triglycerides (-0.20, P = .005). The sex disparity in the strength of correlation reached statistical significance for insulin sensitivity (P < .001) and waist circumference (P = .042). Conclusion: Among 75-year-olds, the MetS and related components are more strongly correlated to HRR in women than in men.

- Previous research, although limited, suggests that both hypoxia and bed rest influence psychological responses by exaggerating negative psychological responses and attenuating positive emotions. The present study investigated the effect of a 21-day prolonged exposure to normobaric hypoxia and bed rest on affective responses and fatigue. Eleven healthy participants underwent three 21-day interventions using a cross-over design: (1) normobaric hypoxic ambulatory confinement (HAMB), (2) normobaric hypoxic bed rest (HBR) and (3) normoxic bed rest (NBR). Affective and fatigue responses were investigated using the Activation Deactivation Adjective Check List, and the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory, which were completed before (Pre), during (Day 7, Day 14, and Day 21) and after (Post) the interventions. The most negative psychological profile appeared during the HBR intervention. Specifically, tiredness, tension, general and physical fatigue significantly increased on days 7, 14, and 21, as well as at Post. After the HBR intervention, general and physical fatigue remained higher compared to Pre values. Additionally, a deterioration of psychological responses was also noted following HAMB and NBR. In particular, both hypoxia and BR per se induced subjective fatigue and negative affective responses. BR seems to exert a moderate negative effect on the sensation of fatigue, whereas exercise attenuates the negative effects of hypoxia as noted during the HAMB condition. In conclusion, our data suggest that the addition of hypoxia to bed rest-induced inactivity significantly worsens affective responses and feeling of fatigue.
