  • Continued high risk behaviors in HIV infected drug abusers
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Addictive Diseases. - 1055-0887 .- 1545-0848. ; 21:4, s. 67-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To characterize current risk behaviors of HIV drug abusers in the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) era, socio-demographic, medical and behavioral information were obtained and immune measurements determined. High-risk sexual practices were prevalent. Participants diagnosed before 1995 were 6 times more likely to have unprotected sex with HIV+ partners (p = 0.05) and 11 times more likely to use contaminated needles (p = 0.05) than participants with later diagnosis. Consistent condom use was reported by only 7% of the cohort. Many (43%) of the participants reported multiple HIV+ and HIV- concurrent partners. Most (65%), particularly women (OR = 3, p = 0.02), did so for drugs or money. Despite detectable viral loads, 36% reported unprotected anal sex. Antiretroviral-treated men, compared to non-treated, tended to have unprotected anal sex (OR = 2, p = 0.07). The continued high-risk behaviors of HIV drug users, particularly those diagnosed before 1995 and/or on antiretroviral therapy, indicates an urgent need for new public health strategies.

  • New microsecond isomers in Bi-189,Bi-190
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 10:2, s. 129-133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New microsecond isomers in the neutron-deficient isotopes Bi-189g,Bi-190 have been identified after in-flight separation by the velocity filter SHIP. The evaporation residues were identified on the basis of delayed recoil-gamma /X-ray, recoil-gamma /X-ray-alpha and excitation function measurements. The systematics of the [pi 1i(13/2)]13/2(+) excited states in the odd-mass Bi nuclei is discussed.

  • Shape-changing particle decays of Bi-185 and structure of the lightest odd-mass Bi isotopes
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 69:5, s. 054308-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Proton and alpha decay of the proton-rich nuclide Bi-185 has been restudied in more detail in the complete fusion reaction Nb-93(Mo-95, 3n)Bi-185 at the velocity filter SHIP. The observed decay pattern of Bi-185 and of the heavier odd-mass isotopes Bi-187,Bi-189,Bi-191,Bi-193 are interpreted based on potential-energy surface calculations. It is shown that the experimental systematics of the particle decays and of the excited states in these nuclei (where known) can be explained by the prolate-oblate shape co-existence at low excitation energy. The observed state in Bi-185 is proposed to be of prolate nature, which is in contrast with the previously proposed oblate interpretation.

  • The discovery of a prolate-oblate-spherical shape triple of spin 0(+) states in the atomic nucleus Pb-186
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474 .- 1873-1554. ; 682, s. 482C-486C
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two excited J(pi)=0(+) states in Pb-186 populated in the a-decay of Po-190 have been identified through alpha -particle/conversion electron coincidences in an experiment at the velocity filter SHIP. The parent Po-190 nuclei have been produced in the Nd-142(Cr-52,4n)Po-190 complete fusion reaction, alpha -particle energies and branching ratios have been measured and hindrance factors were deduced. The observed states have been interpreted as the band heads of the known prolate and (yet unobserved) oblate rotational bands in Pb-186.

  • Performance-based fracture criterion for evaluation of moisture susceptibility in hot-mix asphalt
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research Record. - 0361-1981 .- 2169-4052. ; :1891, s. 55-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The laboratory testing procedures currently available for testing hot-mix asphalt moisture susceptibility all evaluate the effects of moisture damage in the laboratory by measuring the relative change of a single parameter before and after conditioning (i.e., tensile strength ratio, resilient modulus ratio). The use of a single parameter to evaluate moisture damage must be questioned. Instead, a single unified framework that accounts for changes in key mixture properties is needed to evaluate the effects of moisture damage in mixtures effectively. The use of a new performance-based fracture parameter, the energy ratio (ER), for quantifying the effects of moisture damage on the fracture resistance of mixtures is evaluated here. ER is used to determine the effects of moisture damage on changes in the fracture resistance of six granite mixtures prepared with and without the use of an antistripping additive. The granite aggregate used is a known stripping aggregate. In addition, one limestone mixture with a known high resistance to stripping was used. The results indicate that not only is the ER capable of detecting the effects of moisture damage on the fracture resistance of mixtures, it is also shown to detect the presence of antistripping agents in mixtures. Results indicate that the ER may form the basis of a promising combined performance-based fracture criterion for evaluating the effects of moisture damage in mixtures as well as the overall resistance to fracture.

  • The Need for Inducing Shear Instability to Obtain Relevant Parameters for HMA Rut-Resistance
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: 2004 JOURNAL OF THE ASSOCIATION OF ASPHALT PAVING TECHNOLOGISTS. - : Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists. ; , s. 23-52
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Instability rutting is a major distress mode in hot mix asphalt pavements, which occurs when the structural properties of the compacted mix cannot resist near surface critical stress conditions caused by traffic loads. The critical stress conditions for rutting instability include high near surface shear stresses and low confinement. On the mixture level, instability rutting is manifested in a rearrangement of the aggregate structure. This paper illustrates that it may be necessary to induce instability in mixtures to determine parameters that are relevant to mixture rut resistance. The Superpave(TM) gyratory compactor with shear measurements and the option of changing the compaction angle during compaction was used in this study. Mixtures were compacted to a density that is consistent with the air voids of field pavements immediately after construction, namely 7 percent (+/- 0.5) percent air voids. The subsequent application of high shear stresses by increasing the gyratory angle from 1.25 degrees to 2.5 degrees results in the rearrangement of the aggregate structure during which parameters can be measured that define clear differences in mixtures. Based on the testing of 31 mixtures with different void structure and aggregate characteristics, three distinctive responses were observed: a) brittle response, b) plastic response, under which once the mixtures loose strength due to rearrangement they never regain another stable rearrangement, and c) optimal response, which is bracketed by the plastic and brittle types of responses. Key parameters were identified that are relevant to the rut-resistance of mixtures. Using these new parameters, a framework for the evaluation of mixture rutting potential is developed. Based on a comparison of predicted rutting potential to APA rut depth measurements, as well as a statistical analysis of results, the validity of the proposed framework is established. The results show that the proposed framework has may have the potential for becoming an index test for evaluating the rutting potential of mixtures. Based on the findings of this paper, the proposed approach for evaluating mixture rut-potential should be studied further and validated for an even larger variety of asphalt mixtures.

  • Ovine periodontitis as a potential model for periodontal studies. Cross-sectional analysis of clinical, microbiological, and serum immunological parameters.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Periodontology. - 0303-6979 .- 1600-051X. ; 30:1, s. 63-72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: : To investigate infection and host immunity patterns in sheep with naturally occurring "broken-mouth" periodontitis.MATERIALS AND METHODS: : Eight periodontally healthy (HS) and eight periodontally diseased ewes (PDS) were selected. Subgingival plaque and sera were collected and examined for evidence of human periodontitis-associated pathogens. Serum IgG titers were measured by ELISA to multiple strains of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Bacteroides forsythus, Dichelobacter nodosus, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Prevotella intermedia, and Fusobacterium nucleatum as well as several purified antigens (cysteine proteases, LPS, K, and fimbriae).RESULTS: : Neither the organism Aa nor antigens to Aa were found in any animal. Most animals were positive for Pg, Bf, and Pi, but DNA probes detected no difference between HS and PDS relative to amounts of pathogens in subgingival plaque. PDS had significantly higher serum IgG titers to all Pg strains, to 50% of Bf strains, to the Pi and Fn strains, and to fimbriae and the two cysteine proteases (p-values ranging from 0.05 to 0.001). Regression analysis demonstrated a significant association between number of teeth lost and serum IgG antibody titers to whole-cell sonicate antigens of P. gingivalis strains (p<0.01) and body weight (p<0.01).CONCLUSIONS: : The presence of pathogens associated with periodontitis was reflected in differences in serum IgG titers between healthy and diseased sheep. This may have influenced animal body weight and might have systemic health and economic consequences. The data suggest that susceptible and non-susceptible sheep can be identified for periodontal research.

  • How hard is fullerene-like CNx? Some observations from the nanoindentation response of a magnetron-sputtered coating
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Philosophical magazine. A. Physics of condensed matter. Defects and mechanical properties. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0141-8610. ; 82:10 SPEC., s. 2133-2147
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thin fullerene-like CNx coatings deposited on hard substrates (e.g. SiC) show very shallow residual impressions when investigated by nanoindentation at displacements less than the coating thickness. The low work of indentation (i.e. the small area enclosed by the loading and unloading curves) of these materials implies a large amount of recovery of indent depth which is often associated with materials of high hardness. However, analysis of the unloading curves by the Oliver-Pharr method generates hardness values which are usually less than that of silicon. Detailed analysis of the loading curve shows three distinct regimes of behaviour corresponding to behaviour controlled by surface roughness, elastic deformation and plasticity. Measurements of Young's modulus from the elastic part of the loading curve, from the Oliver-Pharr method and from elastic wave measurements are all consistently low. This implies that the material behaves like a very hard rubber which undergoes considerable elastic recovery on unloading but does not have a very high resistance to penetration on loading. The very high H/E values for fullerene-like CNx confirms this view.

  • Angular Momentum Population in the Projectile Fragmentation of 238U at 750 MeV/nucleon
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 69:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A systematic study of the population probabilities of nanosecond and microsecond isomers produced following the projectile fragmentation of U-238 at 750 MeV/nucleon has been undertaken at the SIS/FRS facility at GSI. Approximately 15 isomeric states in neutron-deficient nuclei around A similar to 190 were identified and the corresponding. isomeric ratios determined. The results are compared with a model based on the statistical abrasion-ablation description of relativistic fragmentation and simple assumptions concerning gamma cascades in the final nucleus (sharp cutoff). This model represents an upper limit for the population of isomeric states in relativistic projectile fragmentation. When the decay properties of the states above the isomer are taken into account, as opposed to the sharp cutoff approximation, a good agreement between the experimental and calculated angular momentum population is obtained.

  • Periodontitis vaccine decreases local prostaglandin E2 levels in a primate model.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Infection and Immunity. - 0019-9567 .- 1098-5522. ; 72:2, s. 1166-1168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interleukin-1beta, tumor necrosis factor alpha, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and Porphyromonas gingivalis-specific immunoglobulin G levels in gingival crevicular fluid were measured in primates immunized with a P. gingivalis vaccine followed by ligature-induced periodontitis. Only PGE2 levels were dramatically suppressed (P < 0.0001) in immunized animals versus controls. A significant correlation (P < 0.027) was also found between PGE2 levels and decreased bone loss scores. This study presents the first evidence of a potential mechanism involved in periodontitis vaccine-induced suppression of bone loss in a nonhuman primate model and offers insight into the role of PGE2 in periodontal destruction.

  • Quality of life measures in the Miami HIV-1 infected drug abusers cohort : Relationship to gender and disease status
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of Substance Abuse. - : Elsevier. - 0899-3289 .- 1873-6491. ; 11:4, s. 395-404
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: This study examined activity, daily living, health, support, and outlook in HIV+ drug users. Methods: Using the physician-administered Spitzer Index, the study assessed 75 HIV-1 seropositive men (n = 51) and women (n = 24) enrolled in the Miami HIV-1 Infected Drug Abusers Study (MIDAS). Results: Total composite scores were significantly lower in the HIV-1 infected women than the men (p = .03). Significant gender differences were observed in activity assessment, independent of disease status, with women six times as likely to have lower activity scores (p = .0038). Most women (45%) in this category were homeless or marginally housed, compared to II percent of the men. Additionally, women with low activity scores had less social support than women with high activity scares. Cocaine use was significantly related to reports of normal activity, and varied across genders; more men used cocaine than women (p = .03). Conylared to non-AIDS participants, AIDS patients were more likely to have lower scores in health (p = .009) and poorer outlook (p = .03). Implications: These findings reveal specific deficits in areas of psychosocial capacity particularly in HIV-1 infected women who abuse drugs, that may need to be strengthened in order to enhance function and adherence to treatment, as well as well-being.

  • Serum IgG to heat shock proteins and Porphyromonas gingivalis antigens in diabetic patients with periodontitis.
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Periodontology. - 0303-6979 .- 1600-051X. ; 29:6, s. 551-562
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Past studies have reported a correlation between the presence and severity of periodontitis and serum antibody titers to species-specific antigens of Porphyromonas gingivalis or to cross-reactive antigens, such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and heat shock proteins (HSP), shared between P. gingivalis and other bacteria. Our recent study of periodontal treatment outcome in insulin-dependent (type 1) diabetes mellitus patients with severe periodontitis (IDDMI/periodontitis) resulted in two key findings: 1. serum glutamic acid decarboxylase autoantibody (GAD65 Ab) levels were significantly associated with periodontal pocket depth change (PDC) and 2. serum IgG titers to P. gingivalis cells were positively associated with GAD65 Ab level in seropositive (GAD65 Ab +) patients. We have therefore hypothesized that profiles of serum autoantibody levels and IgG titers, to P. gingivalis-specific antigens may be useful in assessing risk for refractory periodontitis in such patients.AIM: To determine whether PDC resulting from non-surgical periodontal treatment can be predicted using profiles of baseline IgG titers to P. gingivalis-specific antigens, human HSP, and GAD65.METHODS: PDC was assessed two months after non-surgical periodontal treatment of 7 GAD65 Ab + and 11 GAD65 AbIDDM/periodontitis patients. Pretreatment titers to GAD65, recombinant human heat shock proteins (HSP90, HSP70, and HSP60), and various P. gingivalis antigens were measured using radioligand precipitation or enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA) assays and compared to the same measurements for 154 recent-onset IDDM patients and 46 non-diabetic controls.RESULTS: Median titers (ELISA units) to HSP90 and HSP70 were significantly higher than non-diabetic controls for GAD65 Ab + (p degrees = 0.002) and GAD65 Ab- (p = 0.034) IDDM/periodontitis patients, respectively. Multivariate regression analysis indicated significant partial correlation of PDC with log-transformed titers to HSP90 (r = - 0.62, p = 0.008), HSP70 (r = + 0.62, p = 0.009), GAD65 (r = - 0.60, p = 0.01) and P. gingivalis LPS (r = - 0.5 1, p = 0.04). Furthermore, hierarchical clustering of baseline profiles of log-transformed HSP90, HSP70, and GAD65 Ab titers sorted patients into two distinct clusters with significantly different median PDC (1.45 min, n = 10 vs. 0.65 min, n = 8; p = 0.016, Mann-Whitney).CONCLUSION: Pretreatment profiles of serum antibody titers to HSP90, HSP70, GAD65, and P. gingivalis LPS may be useful for predicting which patients with IDDM/periodontitis will have a poor response to non-surgical periodontal therapy.

  • Fine structure in the alpha decay of Po-188,Po-192
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 68:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The alpha decay of Po-188,Po-192 has been reexamined in order to probe the 0(+) states in the daughter nuclei Pb-184,Pb-188 that can be associated with coexisting spherical, oblate, and/or prolate configurations. Improved values were measured for the excitation energy and the feeding alpha -decay intensity of the 0(2)(+) state in Pb-184,Pb-188 and conflicting results on the 0(3)(+) state in Pb-188 were clarified. All known cases of fine structure in the alpha decay of the even-even Po nuclei are reviewed. The reduced alpha-decay width systematics combined with potential-energy-surface calculations confirm the onset of deformation in the ground state of the polonium nuclei around the neutron midshell. An isomeric state with a half-life of 580(100)ns has been identified in Po-192 .

  • Development and Evaluation of the ES-2 Dummy
  • 2001
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Over the last year, the European Enhanced Vehicle-safety Committee Working Group 12 has assessed and reviewed the performance of the enhanced anthropomorphic test device for lateral impacts, EUROSID-2 (ES-2). The objectives for this work have been the following: - To verify whether the proposed design is addressing the shortcomings of the regulatory test device EUROSID-1 as identified previously by EEVC and NHTSA- To make sure that the original EUROSID-1 biofidelity and performance in normal test conditions is preserved. - To reach a well-balanced conclusion, the working group has undertaken a test program to assess the most important requirements for the ES-2 dummy, biofidelity, sensitivity, repeatability, handling, durability, certification and full-scale performance in comparison with EUROSID-1.In addition, but no less important, the working group has reviewed and explored the findings of full-scale tests conducted at several member organisations within ACEA. ACEA has reported the most important findings in September 2000. Subsequently, WG 12 has further investigated the issues raised in this report. On the basis of this work, the working group has concluded the following with regards to the ES-2 specifications and performance:The ES-2 prototype as tested is superior to current test device EUROSID-1 and, hence, a more appropriate test device for regulatory testing. The important shortcomings of the EUROSID-1 have been satisfactorily addressed with ES-2, whilst biofidelity is maintained, in some areas even somewhat improved. It should be noted, however, that the assessment of thorax biofidelity was based on deflection and force-time data only, and does not incorporate an assessment of V*C. It is recommended to adopt the hardware design without further modification and to use the new proposed certification procedures, with the exception of the high velocity pelvis test.Overall test results in full-scale tests have shown that some critical dummy measurement values for ES-2 have increased compared to EUROSID-1, in particular rib deflection, 17%, and V*C, 23%1 on average. Other values on the other hand have brought down such as the pubic force (10%) due to improved leg interaction. Contrary to the full-scale results, the ES-2 gave equal or lower values for all critical measurements in the biofidelity tests. For the large majority of vehicles tested, the different results would not affect pass or fail with respect to current regulatory limits. It should be noted, however, that, maintaining the rating levels in consumer testing, ES-2 results would lead motoring consumers to believe the protection offered in side impact has decreased while in fact the safety performance of these vehicles has not changed.A force transducer has been developed to measure the force applied to the back plate. It is recommended to use the force transducer in full vehicle assessment. Finally, the working group believes the ES-2 dummy forms a solid basis for interim harmonisation and will further support activities to help realise this objective.
