  • Precision electroweak measurements on the Z resonance
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physics Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 427:5-6, s. 257-454
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the final electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the Z resonance by the experiments operating at the electron-positron colliders SLC and LEP. The data consist of 17 million Z decays accumulated by the ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL experiments at LEP, and 600 thousand Z decays by the SLID experiment using a polarised beam at SLC. The measurements include cross-sections, forward-backward asymmetries and polarised asymmetries. The mass and width of the Z boson, m(Z) and Gamma(Z), and its couplings to fermions, for example the p parameter and the effective electroweak mixing angle for leptons, are precisely measured: m(Z) = 91.1875 +/- 0.0021 GeV, Gamma(Z) = 2.4952 +/- 0.0023 GeV, rho(l) = 1.0050 +/- 0.0010, sin(2)theta(eff)(lept) = 0.23153 +/- 0.00016. The number of light neutrino species is determined to be 2.9840 +/- 0.0082, in agreement with the three observed generations of fundamental fermions. The results are compared to the predictions of the Standard Model (SM). At the Z-pole, electroweak radiative corrections beyond the running of the QED and QCD coupling constants are observed with a significance of five standard deviations, and in agreement with the Standard Model. Of the many Z-pole measurements, the forward-backward asymmetry in b-quark production shows the largest difference with respect to its SM expectation, at the level of 2.8 standard deviations. Through radiative corrections evaluated in the framework of the Standard Model, the Z-pole data are also used to predict the mass of the top quark, m(t) = 173(+10)(+13) GeV, and the mass of the W boson, m(W) = 80.363 +/- 0.032 GeV. These indirect constraints are compared to the direct measurements, providing a stringent test of the SM. Using in addition the direct measurements of m(t) and m(W), the mass of the as yet unobserved SM Higgs boson is predicted with a relative uncertainty of about 50% and found to be less than 285 GeV at 95% confidence level. • Multiwavelength Monitoring of the Enigmatic Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 PMN J0948+0022 in 2009 March-July
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 707:1, s. 727-737
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Following the recent discovery of γ rays from the radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy PMN J0948+0022 (z = 0.5846), we started a multiwavelength campaign from radio to γ rays, which was carried out between the end of 2009 March and the beginning of July. The source displayed activity at all the observed wavelengths: a general decreasing trend from optical to γ-ray frequencies was followed by an increase of radio emission after less than two months from the peak of the γ-ray emission. The largest flux change, about a factor of about 4, occurred in the X-ray band. The smallest was at ultraviolet and near-infrared frequencies, where the rate of the detected photons dropped by a factor 1.6-1.9. At optical wavelengths, where the sampling rate was the highest, it was possible to observe day scale variability, with flux variations up to a factor of about 3. The behavior of PMN J0948+0022 observed in this campaign and the calculated power carried out by its jet in the form of protons, electrons, radiation, and magnetic field are quite similar to that of blazars, specifically of flat-spectrum radio quasars. These results confirm the idea that radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies host relativistic jets with power similar to that of average blazars.

  • Modulated High-Energy Gamma-Ray Emission from the Microquasar Cygnus X-3
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 326:5959, s. 1512-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Microquasars are accreting black holes or neutron stars in binary systems with associated relativistic jets. Despite their frequent outburst activity, they have never been unambiguously detected emitting high-energy gamma rays. The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) has detected a variable high-energy source coinciding with the position of the x-ray binary and microquasar Cygnus X-3. Its identification with Cygnus X-3 is secured by the detection of its orbital period in gamma rays, as well as the correlation of the LAT flux with radio emission from the relativistic jets of Cygnus X-3. The gamma-ray emission probably originates from within the binary system, opening new areas in which to study the formation of relativistic jets.

  • FERMI/LARGE AREA TELESCOPE DISCOVERY OF GAMMA-RAY EMISSION FROM A RELATIVISTIC JET IN THE NARROW-LINE QUASAR PMN J0948+0022
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 699:2, s. 976-984
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the discovery by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope of high-energy. gamma-ray emission from the peculiar quasar PMN J0948+0022 (z = 0.5846). The optical spectrum of this object exhibits rather narrow H beta (FWHM(H beta) similar to 1500 km s(-1)), weak forbidden lines, and is therefore classified as a narrow-line type I quasar. This class of objects is thought to have relatively small black hole mass and to accrete at a high Eddington ratio. The radio loudness and variability of the compact radio core indicate the presence of a relativistic jet. Quasi-simultaneous radio/optical/X-ray and gamma-ray observations are presented. Both radio and gamma-ray emissions (observed over five months) are strongly variable. The simultaneous optical and X-ray data from Swift show a blue continuum attributed to the accretion disk and a hard X-ray spectrum attributed to the jet. The resulting broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) and, in particular, the gamma-ray spectrum measured by Fermi are similar to those of more powerful Flat-Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs). A comparison of the radio and gamma-ray characteristics of PMN J0948+0022 with the other blazars detected by LAT shows that this source has a relatively low radio and gamma-ray power with respect to other FSRQs. The physical parameters obtained from modeling the SED also fall at the low power end of the FSRQ parameter region discussed in Celotti & Ghisellini. We suggest that the similarity of the SED of PMN J0948+0022 to that of more massive and more powerful quasars can be understood in a scenario in which the SED properties depend on the Eddington ratio rather than on the absolute power.

  • The genome of the model beetle and pest Tribolium castaneum.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nature. - 1476-4687. ; 452:7190, s. 949-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tribolium castaneum is a representative of earth’s most numerous eukaryotic order, a powerful model organism for the study of generalized insect development, and also an important pest of stored agricultural products. We describe its genome sequence here. This omnivorous beetle has evolved an ability to interact with a diverse chemical environment as evidenced by large expansions in odorant and gustatory receptors, as well as p450 and other detoxification enzymes. Developmental patterns in Tribolium are more representative of other arthropods than those found in Drosophila, a fact represented in gene content and function. For one, Tribolium has retained more ancestral genes involved in cell-cell communication than Drosophila, and some are expressed in the growth zone crucial for axial elongation in short germ development. Systemic RNAi in T. castaneum appears to use mechanisms distinct from those found in C. elegans, but nevertheless offers similar power for the elucidation of gene function and identification of targets for selective insect control.

  • Rapid method for sensitive screening of oligosaccharide epitopes in the lipooligosaccharide from Campylobacter jejuni strains isolated from Guillain-Barre syndrome and Miller Fisher syndrome patients
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Microbiology. - 0095-1137 .- 1098-660X. ; 46:10, s. 3429-3436
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Campylobacter jejuni lipooligosaccharide (LOS) can trigger Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) due to its similarity to human gangliosides. Rapid and accurate structural elucidation of the LOS glycan of a strain isolated from a GBS patient could help physicians determine the spectrum of anti-ganglioside antibodies likely to be found and therefore provide valuable assistance in establishing an appropriate course of treatment. The ability of implemented mass spectrometry-based approaches in a clinical setting has been limited by the laborious and time-consuming nature of the protocols, typically 3 to 4 days, used to prepare LOS. In order to improve the analytical throughput, microwave-assisted enzymatic digestion was investigated. In this study, the bacterial cells were suspended in 50 mu l of 20 mM ammonium acetate buffer containing DNase and RNase and treated by direct microwave irradiation for 3 min. Then, proteinase K was added and the samples were again microwaved. The intact LOS samples were analyzed using electrophoresis-assisted open-tubular liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The reliability of the rapid, high-throughput technique was demonstrated through analysis of LOS glycans from 73 C. jejuni strains. The structure was elucidated using material from a single colony. The total time for sample preparation and MS analysis is less than 60 min.

  • Tacking in the wind tunnel
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 19th Chesapeake Sailing Yacht Symposium, CSYS. ; , s. 161-175
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years a number of Dynamic Velocity Prediction Programs (DVPPs), which allow studying the behaviour of a yacht while tacking, have been developed. The aerodynamic models used in DVPPs usually suffer from a lack of available data on the behaviour of the sail forces at very low apparent wind angles where the sails are flogging. In this paper measured aerodynamic force and moment coefficients for apparent wind angles between 0° and 30° are presented. Tests were carried out in the University of Auckland's Twisted Flow Wind Tunnel in a quasi-steady manner for stepwise changes of the apparent wind angle. Test results for different tacking scenarios (genoa flogging or backed) are presented and discussed and it is found that a backed headsail does not necessarily produce more drag than a flogging headsail but increases the beneficial yawing moment significantly. The quasi-steady approach used in the wind tunnel tests does not account for unsteady effects like the aerodynamic inertia in roll due to the "added mass" of the sails. In the second part of paper the added mass moment of inertia of a mainsail is estimated by "strip theory" and found to be significant. Using expressions from the literature the order of magnitude of three-dimensional effects neglected in strip theory is then assessed. To further quantify the added inertia experiments with a mainsail model were carried out. Results from those tests are presented at the end of the paper and indicate that the added inertia is about 76 % of what strip theory predicts.

  • Unsteady aerodynamic phenomena associated with sailing upwind in waves
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 3rd High Performance Yacht Design Conference 2008, HPYD 2008. - 9781622769124 ; , s. 148-157
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Velocity Prediction Programs (VPPs) based on a steady-state equilibrium between aero- and hydrodynamic forces continue to be important tools when assessing the performance of yachts during the design process. Over the last decade a number of Dynamic Velocity Prediction Programs (DVPPs), which also allow study of the dynamic characteristics of the boat, have been developed. Most DVPPs are based on numerically solving the equations of motion of the yacht according to Newton's second law with the aerodynamic forces being calculated from quasi-steady theory. This paper discusses whether this assumption of quasi-steady aerodynamics can be justified and also analyses the error introduced by such a quasi-steady analysis. Unsteady potential flow theory is used to predict the pressure distribution on an aerofoil-like, two-dimensional "slice" of a mainsail carrying out harmonic oscillations both perpendicular to, and along the direction of the incident flow. Such types of motion occur when a yacht pitches or rolls in waves. Theoretical pressure distributions are compared to wind tunnel measurements on an oscillating, rigid mainsail model of 3.2 metre span and 0.447 metre chord length. Experiments were carried out at reduced frequencies ranging from k = 0 to k = 0.8, as the mainsail of an International America's Cup Class yacht sailing upwind in waves typically encounters reduced frequencies in this range. It is found that predictions based on unsteady theory match the measured pressure distributions much better then quasi-steady predictions. This leads to the conclusion that, if the performance of the yacht is to be predicted on a time-scale shorter then the pitching period, this can be achieved best with an unsteady aerodynamic model. In the paper no attempt is made to investigate the influence of the flexibility of the sails, sail interaction, three-dimensional effects or phenomena related to dynamic stall.

  • Stable Isotope Analysis of the Middle Helladic Population from two cemeteries at Asine : Barbouna and the East Cemetery
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Mediterranean Archaeology and Archaeometry. - Rhodes : The University of the Aegean. - 1108-9628. ; 9:2, s. 1-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we report the results of the stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses of humans from two Middle Bronze Age cemeteries at Asine, Greece: Barbouna (n=6) and the East Cemetery (n=13). In general, the dietary pattern of adults and juveniles shows a heavy reliance on mainly terrestrial foods; C3 plants and a varying amount of animal protein (meat, milk or dairy products). The high nitrogen values of some individuals from the East cemetery indicate a substantial consumption of animal protein, although the carbon values show that no detectable amounts of marine foods, or C4 plants such as millet had been consumed. High nitrogen values as well as the high slaughter age of domestic animals, as found in previous studies point towards a significant utilization of milk and dairy products at Asine. A low increase of nitrogen values in subadults younger than one years of age from Barbouna compared to females at the East cemetery indicates that these children may have been fed breast milk as well as supplementary foods. Therefore, despite the poor preservation and uneven sample size, the Asine isotopic data give us information on diet during the MH period, as well as variation between the members of the community.

  • Characterization of mutations in complement factor I (CFI) associated with hemolytic uremic syndrome
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Molecular Immunology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1872-9142 .- 0161-5890. ; 45:1, s. 95-105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent studies have identified mutations in the complement regulatory gene factor I (CFI) that predispose to atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS). CFI is a two-chain serine protease in which the light chain carries the catalytic domain while the heavy chain's function is unclear. It downregulates the alternative and classical complement pathways by cleaving the alpha' chains of C3b and C4b in the presence of cofactor proteins (known as cofactor activity). Many CFI mutations in aHUS result in low CFI levels with a consequent quantitative defect in complement regulation. In others, the mutant protein is present in normal amounts but the presumed functional deficiency has not yet been defined. In this report we examine the nature of the functional defect in aHUS-associated CFI mutations. The I322T, D501N and D506V mutations reside in the serine protease domain of CFI and result in secreted proteins that lack C3b and C4b cofactor activity. The delTTCAC (1446-1450) mutant leads to a protein that is not secreted. The R299W mutant lies in a region of the CFI heavy chain of no known function. Our assessments demonstrate decreased C3b and C4b cofactor activity, providing evidence that this region is important for cofactor activity. In two other heavy chain mutants and one probable polymorphic variant, no functional deficiency was identified. These defective mutant proteins will result in an inability to appropriately control the complement cascade at sites of endothelial cell injury. The excessive complement activation for a given degree of damage may result in generation of a procoagulant state and aHUS.

  • Optimisation of span-wise lift distributions for upwind sails
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 3rd High Performance Yacht Design Conference 2008, HPYD 2008. - 9781622769124 ; , s. 101-110
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wind tunnel experiments using a Real-Time Velocity Prediction Programme to investigate the optimal trim of a VO70 model under various simulated true wind speeds are reported. The results illustrate that the decision made depend upon the particular apparent wind direction and true wind speed. It is suggested that these can be sub-divided into three broad bands: low wind speeds where the total drag is minimised and the trim that provides the maximum thrust coefficient is chosen, moderate wind speeds where the heel angle has a strong effect and the optimum choice includes a reduction in lift coefficient and centre of effort height and strong winds where the heel angle and hence heeling moment is limited to the maximum acceptable value and the optimum loading distribution is strongly constrained by this limit. Extended Lifting Line Theory is used to further investigate the detailed loading distribution on an AC90 mainsail. The result illustrate the way in which the optimal distribution changes with varying conditions.
