  • Linking Small-scale Solar Wind Properties with Large-scale Coronal Source Regions through Joint Parker Solar Probe-Metis/Solar Orbiter Observations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : IOP Publishing Ltd. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 935:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The solar wind measured in situ by Parker Solar Probe in the very inner heliosphere is studied in combination with the remote-sensing observation of the coronal source region provided by the METIS coronagraph aboard Solar Orbiter. The coronal outflows observed near the ecliptic by Metis on 2021 January 17 at 16:30 UT, between 3.5 and 6.3 R (circle dot) above the eastern solar limb, can be associated with the streams sampled by PSP at 0.11 and 0.26 au from the Sun, in two time intervals almost 5 days apart. The two plasma flows come from two distinct source regions, characterized by different magnetic field polarity and intensity at the coronal base. It follows that both the global and local properties of the two streams are different. Specifically, the solar wind emanating from the stronger magnetic field region has a lower bulk flux density, as expected, and is in a state of well-developed Alfvenic turbulence, with low intermittency. This is interpreted in terms of slab turbulence in the context of nearly incompressible magnetohydrodynamics. Conversely, the highly intermittent and poorly developed turbulent behavior of the solar wind from the weaker magnetic field region is presumably due to large magnetic deflections most likely attributed to the presence of switchbacks of interchange reconnection origin.

  • A global analysis of climate-relevant aerosol properties retrieved from the network of Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) near-surface observatories
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Measurement Techniques. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1867-1381 .- 1867-8548. ; 13:8, s. 4353-4392
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aerosol particles are essential constituents of the Earth's atmosphere, impacting the earth radiation balance directly by scattering and absorbing solar radiation, and indirectly by acting as cloud condensation nuclei. In contrast to most greenhouse gases, aerosol particles have short atmospheric residence times, resulting in a highly heterogeneous distribution in space and time. There is a clear need to document this variability at regional scale through observations involving, in particular, the in situ near-surface segment of the atmospheric observation system. This paper will provide the widest effort so far to document variability of climate-relevant in situ aerosol properties (namely wavelength dependent particle light scattering and absorption coefficients, particle number concentration and particle number size distribution) from all sites connected to the Global Atmosphere Watch network. High-quality data from almost 90 stations worldwide have been collected and controlled for quality and are reported for a reference year in 2017, providing a very extended and robust view of the variability of these variables worldwide. The range of variability observed worldwide for light scattering and absorption coefficients, single-scattering albedo, and particle number concentration are presented together with preliminary information on their long-term trends and comparison with model simulation for the different stations. The scope of the present paper is also to provide the necessary suite of information, including data provision procedures, quality control and analysis, data policy, and usage of the ground-based aerosol measurement network. It delivers to users of the World Data Centre on Aerosol, the required confidence in data products in the form of a fully characterized value chain, including uncertainty estimation and requirements for contributing to the global climate monitoring system.

  • Exploring the Solar Wind from Its Source on the Corona into the Inner Heliosphere during the First Solar Orbiter-Parker Solar Probe Quadrature
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 2041-8205 .- 2041-8213. ; 920:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This Letter addresses the first Solar Orbiter (SO)-Parker Solar Probe (PSP) quadrature, occurring on 2021 January 18 to investigate the evolution of solar wind from the extended corona to the inner heliosphere. Assuming ballistic propagation, the same plasma volume observed remotely in the corona at altitudes between 3.5 and 6.3 solar radii above the solar limb with the Metis coronagraph on SO can be tracked to PSP, orbiting at 0.1 au, thus allowing the local properties of the solar wind to be linked to the coronal source region from where it originated. Thanks to the close approach of PSP to the Sun and the simultaneous Metis observation of the solar corona, the flow-aligned magnetic field and the bulk kinetic energy flux density can be empirically inferred along the coronal current sheet with an unprecedented accuracy, allowing in particular estimation of the Alfven radius at 8.7 solar radii during the time of this event. This is thus the very first study of the same solar wind plasma as it expands from the sub-Alfvenic solar corona to just above the Alfven surface.

  • Cooperative Intersection Crossing Over 5G
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking. - 1558-2566 .- 1063-6692. ; 29:1, s. 303-317
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IEEE Autonomous driving is a safety critical application of sensing and decision-making technologies. Communication technologies extend the awareness capabilities of vehicles, beyond what is achievable with the on-board systems only. Nonetheless, issues typically related to wireless networking must be taken into account when designing safe and reliable autonomous systems. The aim of this work is to present a control algorithm and a communication paradigm over 5G networks for negotiating traffic junctions in urban areas. The proposed control framework has been shown to converge in a finite time and the supporting communication software has been designed with the objective of minimizing communication delays. At the same time, the underlying network guarantees reliability of the communication. The proposed framework has been successfully deployed and tested, in partnership with Ericsson AB, at the AstaZero proving ground in Goteborg, Sweden. In our experiments, three heterogeneous autonomous vehicles successfully drove through a 4-way intersection of 235 square meters in an urban scenario.

  • The role of echocardiography in sports cardiology : An expert opinion statement of the Italian Society of Sports Cardiology (SIC sport)
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cardiology. - 0167-5273. ; 410
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is routinely required during pre-participation screening in the presence of symptoms, family history of sudden cardiac death or cardiomyopathies <40-year-old, murmurs, abnormal ECG findings or in the follow-up of athletes with a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD). TTE is a cost-effective first-line imaging modality to evaluate the cardiac remodeling due to long-term, intense training, previously known as the athlete's heart, and to rule out the presence of conditions at risk of sudden cardiac death, including cardiomyopathies, coronary artery anomalies, congenital, aortic and heart valve diseases. Moreover, TTE is useful for distinguishing physiological cardiac adaptations during intense exercise from pathological behavior due to an underlying CVD. In this expert opinion statement endorsed by the Italian Society of Sports Cardiology, we discussed common clinical scenarios where a TTE is required and conditions falling in the grey zone between the athlete's heart and underlying cardiomyopathies or other CVD. In addition, we propose a minimum dataset that should be included in the report for the most common indications of TTE in sports cardiology clinical practice.

  • The Gaia-ESO Survey : Carbon Abundance in the Galactic Thin and Thick Disks
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 888:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on carbon, which is one of the most abundant elements in the universe and is of high importance in the field of nucleosynthesis and galactic and stellar evolution. The origin of carbon and the relative importance of massive and low- to intermediate-mass stars in producing it is still a matter of debate. We aim at better understanding the origin of carbon by studying the trends of [C/H], [C/Fe], and [C/Mg] versus [Fe/H] and [Mg/H] for 2133 FGK dwarf stars from the fifth Gaia-ESO Survey internal data release (GES iDR5). The availability of accurate parallaxes and proper motions from Gaia DR2 and radial velocities from GES iDR5 allows us to compute Galactic velocities, orbits, absolute magnitudes, and, for 1751 stars, Bayesian-derived ages. Three different selection methodologies have been adopted to discriminate between thin- and thick-disk stars. In all the cases, the two stellar groups show different [C/H], [C/Fe], and [C/Mg] and span different age intervals, with the thick-disk stars being, on average, older than the thin-disk ones. The behaviors of [C/H], [C/Fe], and [C/Mg] versus [Fe/H], [Mg/H], and age all suggest that C is primarily produced in massive stars. The increase of [C/Mg] for young thin-disk stars indicates a contribution from low-mass stars or the increased C production from massive stars at high metallicities due to the enhanced mass loss. The analysis of the orbital parameters R-med and supports an "inside-out" and "upside-down" formation scenario for the disks of the Milky Way.

  • The Gaia-ESO Survey : Oxygen Abundance in the Galactic Thin and Thick Disks*
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Astronomical Journal. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0004-6256 .- 1538-3881. ; 161:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyze the oxygen abundances of a stellar sample representative of the two major Galactic populations: the thin and thick disks. The aim is to investigate the differences between members of the Galactic disks and contribute to the understanding of the origin of oxygen chemical enrichment in the Galaxy. The analysis is based on the [O i] = 6300.30 A oxygen line in high-resolution spectra (R similar to 52,500) obtained from the Gaia-ESO public spectroscopic Survey (GES). By comparing the observed spectra with a theoretical data set computed in LTE with the SPECTRUM synthesis and ATLAS12 codes, we derive the oxygen abundances of 516 FGK dwarfs for which we have previously measured carbon abundances. Based on kinematic, chemical, and dynamical considerations, we identify 20 thin and 365 thick disk members. We study the potential trends of both subsamples in terms of their chemistry ([O/H], [O/Fe], [O/Mg], and [C/O] versus [Fe/H] and [Mg/H]), age, and position in the Galaxy. The main results are that (a) [O/H] and [O/Fe] ratios versus [Fe/H] show systematic differences between thin and thick disk stars with an enhanced O abundance of thick disk stars with respect to thin disk members and a monotonic decrement of [O/Fe] with increasing metallicity, even at metal-rich regime; (b) there is a smooth correlation of [O/Mg] with age in both populations, suggesting that this abundance ratio can be a good proxy of stellar ages within the Milky Way; and (c) thin disk members with [Fe/H] 0 display a [C/O] ratio smaller than the solar value, suggesting a possibly outward migration of the Sun from lower Galactocentric radii.

  • Bandwidth-Aware Page Placement in NUMA
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: 2020 IEEE International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium (IPDPS). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). ; , s. 546-556
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Page placement is a critical problem for memory-intensive applications running on a shared-memory multiprocessor with a non-uniform memory access (NUMA) architecture. State-of-the-art page placement mechanisms interleave pages evenly across NUMA nodes. However, this approach fails to maximize memory throughput in modern NUMA systems, characterized by asymmetric bandwidths and latencies, and sensitive to memory contention and interconnect congestion phenomena. We propose BWAP, a novel page placement mechanism based on asymmetric weighted page interleaving. BWAP combines an analytical performance model of the target NUMA system with on-line iterative tuning of page distribution for a given memory-intensive application. Our experimental evaluation with representative memory-intensive workloads shows that BWAP performs up to 66% better than state-of-the-art techniques. These gains are particularly relevant when multiple co-located applications run in disjoint partitions of a large NUMA machine or when applications do not scale up to the total number of cores.

  • Fabrication, Characterization and Performance of Low Power Gas Sensors Based on (GaxIn1-x)(2)O-3 Nanowires
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sensors. - : MDPI. - 1424-8220. ; 21:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Active research in nanostructured materials aims to explore new paths for improving electronic device characteristics. In the field of gas sensors, those based on metal oxide single nanowires exhibit excellent sensitivity and can operate at extremely low power consumption, making them a highly promising candidate for a novel generation of portable devices. The mix of two different metal oxides on the same nanowire can further broaden the response of this kind of gas sensor, thus widening the range of detectable gases, without compromising the properties related to the active region miniaturization. In this paper, a first study on the synthesis, characterization and gas sensing performance of (GaxIn1-x)(2)O-3 nanowires (NWs) is reported. Carbothermal metal-assisted chemical vapor deposition was carried out with different mixtures of Ga2O3, In2O3 and graphite powders. Structural characterization of the NWs revealed that they have a crystalline structure close to that of In2O3 nanowires, with a small amount of Ga incorporation, which highly depends on the mass ratio between the two precursors. Dedicated gas nanosensors based on single NWs were fabricated and tested for both ethanol and nitrogen dioxide, demonstrating an improved performance compared to similar devices based on pure In2O3 or Ga2O3 NWs.

  • The discovery space of ELT-ANDES. Stars and stellar populations
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Experimental Astronomy. - 0922-6435. ; 57:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph (ANDES) is the optical and near-infrared high-resolution echelle spectrograph envisioned for the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). We present a selection of science cases, supported by new calculations and simulations, where ANDES could enable major advances in the fields of stars and stellar populations. We focus on three key areas, including the physics of stellar atmospheres, structure, and evolution; stars of the Milky Way, Local Group, and beyond; and the star-planet connection. The key features of ANDES are its wide wavelength coverage at high spectral resolution and its access to the large collecting area of the ELT. These features position ANDES to address the most compelling questions and potentially transformative advances in stellar astrophysics of the decades ahead, including questions which cannot be anticipated today.

  • Augmenting Transactional Memory with the Future Abstraction
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The advent of multicore systems spurred great interest in Transactional Memory (TM). TM is a parallel programming paradigm that coordinates concurrent threads by incorporating transactions into programming languages. TM shifts the burden of coordinating and synchronizing concurrent threads from programmers to the compiler, run-time environment, or even hardware.Unfortunately, though, current state-of-the-art TM implementations lack support for a powerful and intuitive abstraction that is widely used in modern parallel programming environments (e.g., C++, Java and JavaScript), namely "futures". The future abstraction is widely used due to its ability to express in a natural way opportunities for parallelism as well as logical dependencies among parallel tasks. Yet, perhaps surprisingly, the problem of how to support the future abstraction in a TM implementation has not been studied in the literature, although futures represent a natural and convenient means to enable intra-transaction parallelism in long-running transactions. This dissertation aims at filling precisely this relevant gap in the literature by investigating how to reconcile the TM and the future abstractions. This limitation is tackled by introducing a novel abstraction, called transactional futures,i.e., transactions that execute wrapped within futures and that are spawned and evaluated by other transactions or transactional futures. The semantics of transactional futures describes the allowed behaviors with regards to properties such as atomicity and isolation. Multiple semantics are defined, and the trade-offs between ease of use and efficiency are explored for each. Based on these semantics, this dissertation presents two novel TM implementations. The efficiency of the proposed transactional futures abstraction is evaluated in a real system using the TM implementations. Finally, this dissertation addresses the problem of self-tuning the parallelism degree in TM systems that support intra-transaction parallelism. This goal is achieved by presenting an online learning system that combines model-driven (Sequential Based Bayesian Optimization) and local searches techniques, as well as adaptive performance monitoring techniques.
