  • Multi-leptons with high transverse momentum at HERA
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1029-8479. ; :10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Events with at least two high transverse momentum leptons (electrons or muons) are studied using the H1 and ZEUS detectors at HERA with an integrated luminosity of 0.94 fb(-1). The observed numbers of events are in general agreement with the Standard Model predictions. Seven di- and tri-lepton events are observed in e(+)p collision data with a scalar sum of the lepton transverse momenta above 100 GeV while 1.94 +/- 0.17 events are expected. Such events are not observed in e(-)p collisions for which 1.19 +/- 0.12 are predicted. Total visible and differential di-electron and di-muon photoproduction cross sections are extracted in a restricted phase space dominated by photon-photon collisions.

  • Skill and uncertainty of a regional air quality model ensemble
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 1352-2310. ; 43:31, s. 4822-4832
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently several regional air quality projects were carried out to support the negotiation under the Clean Air For Europe (CAFE) programme by predicting the impact of emission control policies with an ensemble of models. Within these projects, CITYDELTA and EURODELTA, the fate of air quality at the scale of European cities or that of the European continent was studied using several models. In this article we focus on the results of EURODELTA. The predictive skill of the ensemble of models is described for ozone, nitrogen dioxide and secondary inorganic compounds, and the uncertainty in air quality modelling is examined through the model ensemble spread of concentrations. For ozone daily maxima the ensemble spread origin differs from one region to another. In the neighbourhood of cities or in mountainous areas the spread of predicted values does not span the range of observed data, due to poorly resolved emissions or complex-terrain meteorology. By contrast in Atlantic and North Sea coastal areas the spread of predicted values is found to be larger than the observations. This is attributed to large differences in the boundary conditions used in the different models. For NO2 daily averages the ensemble spread is generally too small compared with observations. This is because models miss highest values occurring in stagnant meteorology in stable boundary layers near cities. For secondary particulate matter compounds the simulated concentration spread is more balanced, observations falling nearly equiprobably within the ensemble, and the spread originates both from meteorology and aerosol chemistry and thermodynamics. © 2008.

  • An Intensive Hubble Space Telescope Survey for z>1 Type Ia Supernovae by Targeting Galaxy Clusters
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Astronomical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-6256 .- 1538-3881. ; 138, s. 1271-1283
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a new survey strategy to discover and study high-redshift Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). By targeting massive galaxy clusters at 0.9 < z < 1.5, we obtain a twofold improvement in the efficiency of finding SNe compared to an HST field survey and a factor of 3 improvement in the total yield of SN detections in relatively dust-free red-sequence galaxies. In total, sixteen SNe were discovered at z>0.95, nine of which were in galaxy clusters. This strategy provides an SN sample that can be used to decouple the effects of host-galaxy extinction and intrinsic color in high-redshift SNe, thereby reducing one of the largest systematic uncertainties in SN cosmology. Based on observations made with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope and obtained from the data archive at the Space Telescope Institute. STScI is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. under the NASA contract NAS 5-26555. The observations are associated with program 10496.

  • Etching of Graphene Devices with a Helium Ion Beam
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: ACS Nano. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1936-0851 .- 1936-086X. ; 3:9, s. 2674-2676
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the etching of graphene devices with a helium ion beam, including in situ electrical measurement during lithography. The etching process can be used to nanostructure and electrically isolate different regions In a graphene device, as demonstrated by etching a channel in a suspended graphene device with etched gaps down to about 10 nm. Graphene devices on silicon dioxide (02) substrates etch with lower He ion doses and are found to have a residual conductivity after etching, which we attribute to contamination by hydrocarbons.

  • Influence of donor/recipient sex matching on outcome of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for aplastic anemia
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Transplantation. - : Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health). - 1534-6080 .- 0041-1337. ; 82:2, s. 218-226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. Increased risk of transplant related mortality in male recipients of female hematopoietic stem cell grafts and in vitro reactivity of lymphocytes against H-Y encoded gene products in females with rejected male grafts have been documented. An increased rejection of male grafts in female recipients is not reported for solid organ or stem cell transplants and the role of H-Y as transplantation antigen has been controversial. Methods. Data from 1481 patients with a hematopoietic stem cell transplant for aplastic anemia reported from 154 centers in 28 countries were analyzed. Outcome was compared between patients with donors of the same or opposite Sex. Results. Survival at 5 years was significantly better in patients with donors from the same sex: 68% vs. 60% (P=0.001). Male patients with female donors had a decreased survival (relative risk of death 1.52, P < 0.001) and an increased risk of severe graft-versus-host disease (relative risk 1.33, P=0.03) compared to recipients of sex-matched grafts. Female patients with male donors had a decreased survival (relative risk of death 1.44, P=0.01) and an increased risk of rejection (relative risk 2.20, P=0.01) compared to recipients of sex-matched grafts. In a subgroup analysis, the negative effects of donor/recipient sex-mismatching appeared confined to patients receiving conditioning regimens not containing antithymocyte globulin. Conclusions. These data confirm H-Y as a clinically relevant transplantation antigen, in both the graft-versus-host and the host-versus-graft direction. Wherever possible, donor-recipient sex-matching should be integrated into donor selection algorithms.
