    • A laboratory for measuring low-level radioactivity has been built at the AlbaNova University Center in Stockholm. Low-level concrete in combination with a 5 cm iron lining provide an average photon fluency rate from terrestrial sources at least a factor of 40 below that in the common laboratories of the Center. The radon activity inside the laboratory has been measured to (3 +/- 2) Bq m(-3). Material considerations are discussed. Construction and performance of the laboratory, as well as the present instrumentation, is described.

    • The reaction pd -> He-3 eta at threshold was used to provide a clean source of eta mesons for decay studies with the WASA detector at CELSIUS. The branching ratio of the decay eta -> pi(+)pi(-)e(+)e(-) is measured to be (4.3 +/- 1.3 +/- 0.4) x 10(-4).

  • Production of the ω meson in the pd -> 3He ω reaction at 1450 MeV and 1360 MeV

    • The production of ω mesons in the pd→3Heω reaction has been studied at two energies near the kinematic threshold, Tp=1450 MeV and Tp=1360 MeV. The differential cross section was measured as a function of the ω c.m. angle at both energies over the whole angular range. Whereas the results at 1360 MeV are consistent with isotropy, strong rises are observed near both the forward and backward directions at 1450 MeV. Calculations made using a two-step model with an intermediate pion fail to reproduce the shapes of the measured angular distributions and also underestimate the total cross sections

  • Properties of the WASA pellet target and a stored intermediate-energy beam

    • Experimental data from the reaction close to threshold have been used to investigate time-dependent properties of the WASA pellet target and the stored beam of 892.8 MeV protons in the CELSIUS accelerator. The detection of 3He ions in solid-state detectors provides an excellent almost background free trigger for η production. Pellet interactions with the surrounding material and with the beam lead to evaporation of deuterium gas into the beam pipe. Approximately 30% of the registered η decay events are due to interactions in deuterium gas outside the pellets. Due to beam–target interaction the beam is transversely heated and appears to acquire a component of a slightly lower energy.

    • A zero-degree spectrometer for tagging η mesons on the CELSIUS/WASA facility is described, and its characteristics are presented. Tagging of η mesons is performed by detecting 3He ions produced by reaction pd → 3Heη close to the production threshold. The low background level (<2%) is in good agreement with the data obtained earlier on the SATURNE accelerator.

    • A search for rare lepton decays of the eta meson was performed using the WASA detector at CELSIUS. Two candidates for double Dalitz decay eta -> e(+)e(-)e(+)e(-) events are reported with a background of 1.3 +/- 0.2 events. This allows to set an upper limit to the branching ratio of 9.7x10(-5) (90% CL). The branching ratio for the decay eta -> e(+)e(-)gamma is determined to (7.8 +/- 0.5(stat)+/- 0.8(syst))x10(-3) in agreement with world average value. An upper limit (90% CL) for the branching ratio for the eta -> e(+)e(-) decay is 2.7x10(-5) and a limit for the sum of the eta ->mu(+)mu(-)mu(+)mu(-) and eta ->pi(+)pi(-)mu(+)mu(-) decays is 3.6x10(-4).

  • Pionic Fusion Study of the 6He Halo

    • The structure of the halo nucleus 6He has been investigated in a pionic fusion experiment at the CELSIUS storage ring facility in Uppsala. The 4He(d, 6He)π+ reaction was studied 0.6 - 5.0 MeV above threshold in the centre-of-mass frame with a deuteron beam incident on a 4He gas target. The 6He ions were detected in a ΔE - E solid-state detector telescope inserted into the CELSIUS ring. The results for the total and differential cross section are presented and compared to results for the analogue reaction producing the 3.56 MeV analogue state in 6Li. A simple model of the reaction gives results consistent with earlier findings of 6He as having a spatial extent considerably exceeding that of the alpha particle. It is also shown that information about the high momentum part of the halo wave function can be extracted from the results of this pionic fusion measurement.

  • Studies of PWO Crystals and Simulations of the p̅p →Λ̅Λ, Λ̅Σ0 Reactions for the PANDA Experiment

    • The thesis comprises investigations of two topics related to the PANDA experiment. The first part is dedicated to energy resolution and light yield uniformity studies of PWO crystals for the electromagnetic calorimeter. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to simulation studies of the p̅p→Λ̅Λ and the p̅p→Λ̅Σ0 channels. Photon response measurements with one 3×3 crystals matrix of rectangular crystals and one 5×5 matrix with tapered crystals have been performed at the MAX-Lab synchrotron facility in Lund, Sweden. Photon energies in the range of 13-84 MeV were used. GEANT4 simulations were performed in order to find the most suitable method for adding the energy contributions and for calibration purposes. The widths, σ, of the resulting experimental summed energy peaks were fitted using the Novosibirsk distribution. The results show that the electromagnetic shower at 84 MeV is completely contained in the 5×5 matrix. The widths (σ) for the summed energy peaks were determined.Studies of the uniformity of the light yield were performed for crystals of three different shapes and different wrapping materials. The light yield as a function of distance between the point of energy depositions and the PM tube, was shown to be closely related to the crystal shape and the wrapping material. The p̅p→Λ̅Λ channel was studies at beam momenta of 1.64 GeV/c, 4 GeV/c and 15 GeV/c, while p̅p→Λ̅Σ0 was studied at 4 GeV/c. In the simulations, both phase space differential cross-sections and experimental differential cross-sections from PS185 were used as input. The purpose of the simulations was to show that the reaction channels can be reconstructed in the detector. Special interest was paid to the polarisation and spin correlations of the hyperons. The result is that there is acceptance of cosθ angular range over the full momentum range of the HESR for both channels. Using isotropic differential cross-sections, the polarisation for Λ̅ and Σ0 as well as spin correlations between Λ̅Λ and Λ̅Σ0 can be well reconstructed. Using the differential cross-sections from PS185, the particles are more likely to go forwards in their respective directions in the CM-system, thus making reconstruction over the full angular range more difficult at high beam momenta.

  • In-beam study of 106Te and 107Te using the recoil decay tagging technique

    • Atomic nuclei are complex many-body systems and exhibit an interplay between single-particle and collective degrees of freedom. In order to describe and predict the “behavior” of nucleons inside the nuclei a variety of theoretical models have been created, each applicable to their own domain of nuclear phenomena. Experimental information is needed in order to test and improve the various theoretical models with the ultimate goal of creating unified theory of nuclear structure. In-beam γ-ray spectroscopy is one way of probing the inner structure of nuclei and it is the subject of this thesis, which describes the first identification of excited states in the extremely neutron deficient nuclei 106Te and 107Te. The experiments were performed at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, using the recoil-decay tagging technique. Prompt γ rays emitted following fusion evaporation reactions were detected by the Jurogam detector array and the selection of the γ rays of interest was based on the recoil identification provided by the RITU gas-filled recoil separator and the GREAT focal plane spectrometer. The production cross sections were estimated to be 25nb and 1μb for 106Te and 107Te, respectively. In case of the nucleus 106Te, several γ rays have been observed. A vibrational-like yrast band has been suggested. For 107Te a number of γ rays have been assigned and a tentative partial level scheme has been suggested. The experimental data have been compared to shell model calculations.

  • Exclusive measurement of two-pion production in the dd -> He-4 pi pi reaction

    • The results from the first kinematically complete measurement of the dd -> He-4 pi pi reaction are reported. The aim was to investigate a long standing puzzle regarding the origin of the peculiar pi pi-invariant mass distributions appearing in double pion production in light ion collisions, the so-called ABC effect. The measurements were performed at the incident deuteron energies of 712 MeV and 1029 MeV. with the WASA detector assembly at CELSIUS in Uppsala, Sweden. We report the observation of a characteristic enhancement at low pi pi-invariant mass at 712 MeV, the lowest energy yet. At the higher energy, in addition to confirming previous experimental observations, Our results reveal a strong angular dependence of the pions in the overall centre of mass system. The results are qualitatively reproduced by a theoretical model, according to which the ABC effect is described as resulting from a kinematical enhancement in the production of the pion pairs from two parallel and independent NN -> d pi sub-processes.   • Performance of HPGe detectors in high magnetic fields

    • A new generation of high-resolution hypernuclear gamma-spectroscopy experiments with high-purity germanium detectors (HPGe) are presently designed at the FINUDA spectrometer at DA Phi NE, the Frascati phi-factory, and at (P) over bar ANDA, the (p) over barp hadron spectrometer at the future FAIR facility. Both, the FINUDA and (P) over bar ANDA spectrometers are built around the target region covering a large solid angle. To maximise the detection efficiency the HPGe detectors have to be located near the target, and therefore they have to be operated in strong magnetic fields (B approximate to I T). The performance of HPGe detectors in such an environment has not been well investigated so far. In the present work VEGA and EUROBALL Cluster HPGe detectors were tested in the field provided by the ALADiN magnet at GSI. No significant degradation of the energy resolution was found, and a change in the rise time distribution of the pulses from preamplifiers was observed. A correlation between rise time and pulse height was observed and is used to correct the measured energy, recovering the energy resolution almost completely. Moreover, no problems in the electronics due to the magnetic field were observed.

  • The pp -> d pi(+)pi(0) reaction – a case of Delta Delta excitation without ABC effect

    • The ABC effect, a low-mass enhancement in the invariant ππ mass, is observed in double-pionic fusion reactions leading to a bound nuclear system in the final state. From previous measurements there have been indications that this phenomenon is resctricted to the σ channel of the ππ system. With exclusive measurements of the pp → dπ+π0 reaction at Tp = 1.1 GeV we demonstrate that, indeed, the ABC effect does not occur in the vector-isovector ππ channel (ρ channel) despite the fact that the ΔΔ excitation is oberved to be the dominant reaction process. We also show that this reaction is well described by a t-channel ΔΔ excitation with the subsequent decay into the vector-isovector ππ channel given by the ρ channel operator
