  • Biodiversity of Freshwater Diatom Communities during 1000 Years of Metal Mining, Land Use, and Climate Change in Central Sweden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Technology. - Washtington : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 46:16, s. 9097-9105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We subjected a unique set of high-quality paleoecological data to statistical modeling to examine if the biological richness and evenness of freshwater diatom communities in the Falun area, a historical copper (Cu) mining region in central Sweden, was negatively influenced by 1000 years of metal exposure. Contrary to ecotoxicological predictions, we found no negative relation between biodiversity and the sedimentary concentrations of eight metals. Strikingly, our analysis listed metals (Co, Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb) or the fractional land cover of cultivated crops, meadow, and herbs indicating land disturbance as potentially promoting biodiversity. However, correlation between metal-and land-cover trends prevented concluding which of these two covariate types positively affected biodiversity. Because historical aqueous metal concentrations-inferred from solid-water partitioning-approached experimental toxicity thresholds for freshwater algae, positive effects of metal mining on biodiversity are unlikely. Instead, the positive relationship between biodiversity and historical land-cover change can be explained by the increasing proportion of opportunistic species when anthropogenic disturbance intensifies. Our analysis illustrates that focusing on the direct toxic effects of metals alone may yield inaccurate environmental assessments on time scales relevant for biodiversity conservation.

  • The Status of the Case-Law from the European Court of Human Rights in the National Legal Practice – a Question of the Local Legal Culture? : East-Scandinavian Comparisons
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Teisės apžvalga / Law review. - Lithuania : Vytautas Magnus University. - 2029-4239. ; 18:2, s. 46-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Too often it has been taken for granted that East-Scandinavian countries, Finland and Sweden share similar societies, similar culture and even legal mentality. Very often there is a shared or similar jurisprudence, sometimes even identical single legal rules in Finland and Sweden due to the historical background, deep co-operation of Nordic legislators especially before the EU-memberships and because Finland has often copied the Swedish legislation. However, the interpretations and therefore the way of legal thinking varies between Finland and Sweden, in the other words, the legal culture in the neighboring countries are not identical. Swedish legislative culture is much more dialogic compared with the Finnish one. The Finnish way to “run things” instead of to discuss and reflect is the main difference between the Finnish and Swedish cultures of realizing things. This might be one reason to the current difference that ECHR and case law based on it, is lively discussed by academics in Finland and easily followed by courts too, whereas this common law –based way of interpretation (the contents of the convention is developed by case-law and not amending the text) is not that familiar way to make legal changes in Sweden. Formally, the convention is valid and binding in both countries and that history is much longer in Sweden since 1959 whereas - mainly thanks to political reasons – Finland could join in the convention in the beginning of 90´s but the factual effects at least into the Finnish procedural law has been really enormous and very fundamental whereas in Sweden the ECHR and its article 6 are not the main factors in the procedural law.In this article, the status of the case-law from the European court of human rights is compared with East-Scandinavian countries.

  • Echocardiography in aortic diseases : EAE recommendations for clinical practice
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Echocardiography. - : Oxford Journals. - 1525-2167 .- 1532-2114. ; 11:8, s. 645-658
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Echocardiography plays an important role in the diagnosis and follow-up of aortic diseases. Evaluation of the aorta is a routine part of the standard echocardiographic examination. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) permits adequate assessment of several aortic segments, particularly the aortic root and proximal ascending aorta. Transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) overcomes the limitations of TTE in thoracic aorta assessment. TTE and TOE should be used in a complementary manner. Echocardiography is useful for assessing aortic size, biophysical properties, and atherosclerotic involvement of the thoracic aorta. Although TOE is the technique of choice in the diagnosis of aortic dissection, TTE may be used as the initial modality in the emergency setting. Intimal flap in proximal ascending aorta, pericardial effusion/tamponade, and left ventricular function can be easily visualized by TTE. However, a negative TTE does not rule out aortic dissection and other imaging techniques must be considered. TOE should define entry tear location, mechanisms and severity of aortic regurgitation, and true lumen compression. In addition, echocardiography is essential in selecting and monitoring surgical and endovascular treatment and in detecting possible complications. Although other imaging techniques such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance have a greater field of view and may yield complementary information, echocardiography is portable, rapid, accurate, and cost-effective in the diagnosis and follow-up of most aortic diseases.

  • Implementing cell contractility in filament-based cytoskeletal models
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Cytoskeleton. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1949-3584. ; 73:2, s. 93-106
  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Cells are known to respond over time to mechanical stimuli, even actively generating force at longer times. In this paper, a microstructural filament-based cytoskeletal network model is extended to incorporate this active response, and a computational study to assess the influence on relaxation behaviour was performed. The incorporation of an active response was achieved by including a strain energy function of contractile activity from the cross-linked actin filaments. A four-state chemical model and strain energy function was adopted, and generalisation to three dimensions and the macroscopic deformation field was performed by integration over the unit sphere. Computational results in MATLAB and ABAQUS/Explicit indicated an active cellular response over various time-scales, dependent on contractile parameters. Important features such as force generation and increasing cell stiffness due to prestress are qualitatively predicted. The work in this paper can easily be extended to encompass other filament-based cytoskeletal models as well.

  • In-transit distribution strategy : solution for European factory competitiveness?
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Industrial management & data systems. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0263-5577 .- 1758-5783. ; 111:1-2, s. 20-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – Research work describes in-transit distribution strategy by determining and analyzing key principles of it as well as by illustrating its application in practice. Emphasis on in-transit distribution strategy is to turn transportation pipeline as a mobile inventory holding place, and actively dispatching goods to a destination, where there is a predicted demand before any customer orders are actually received. The use of this strategy is supported by current trade flows: emerging market trade has increased considerably, but simultaneously Swedish export prices, for example, have significantly decreased. The paper aims to address this issue.Design/methodology/approach – In-transit strategy is examined through a multiple case study from industrial companies having main factory operations in Sweden as well as using a system dynamics simulation model, and Monte Carlo analysis. These are supported by the second hand data of trade flows between Sweden, and India and China.Findings – In order to be successful with in-transit strategy, the case studies show that excellent planning, working closely with customers, first-class market knowledge, and an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system that is able to support the process sufficiently are required. Other highlighted requirements of this strategy are low variation in demand, and predictable distribution lead-time. Simulation study of one hypothetical product group verified case study findings, but the authors find it interesting that manufacturing output variance especially is very sensitive regarding to the overall results. If variation increases, then in-transit strategy is not able to deliver for customers with the necessary accuracy. Also increasing average customer demand, and longer transportation delays lead to undesired outcomes (e.g. too much inventory or out of stock situations).Research limitations/implications – The case study and second hand analysis is limited to one country, and further evidence is needed from other European, and possibly North American companies, to verify these findings.Originality/value – There has been a rather limited amount of research works completed from the use of in-transit strategy, even if increased trade activity and lower price of exported items is that of the old west in their exports to emerging markets, and continues to be so in the future (was even strong to China during credit crunch year 2009). Our research is seminal in terms of a developed system dynamics simulation model.

  • On the optimization of the fluidized bed particulate coating process
  • 1998
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Different aspects that influence the fluidked bedparticulate coating process have been investigated. An easy touse procedure for creating temperature and humidity profilesfor the gas inside the bed was developed. The procedureinvolves measuring a limited number of points inside the bedand using these points generate more data points used for thecreation of the profiles. The profiles revealed that differentparts of the bed have a different involvement in the coatingprocess. Apart from showing the hydrodynamic conditions insidethe bed, the profiles can be used to optimize the size of thebed, to map the net migration of particles and to set thespraying rate limits. The three-domain representation of the bed was used to modelthe coating process. The model showed that large beds and theexistence of stagnant region within the bed widen the toatingdistribution. Increasing the rate of transfer to the sprayingdomain or increasing the overall mixing of the bed Will havethe opposite effect of narrowing the coating distribution. Theunequal transfer between domains can be used to manipulate thetoating distribution. The combination of bed ske, differentrates of transfer between domains, size of spraying domain andthe rate of spraying can be used to obtain particles that arecoated to a particular distribution. The mechanism and kinetics of growth in a top sprayingprocess were determined by coating two poly-distributed seedparticles with a cellulose under different operatingconditions. The resulting particle distribution reveals thatnot all particles in the bed are equally coated. For the topspraying process, smaller particles Capture more toating thanlarger particles. A narrowing of the seed distribution wasfound to increase the chance of toating the large particles. The results also confirmed that particles are coated only aftervisiting the spraying region, which is small compared to therest of the bed. A growth model developed using theexperimental results introduces a segregation factor whichrepresent the probability of different particle sizes beingcoated. For the top spraying coating of lactose particle with acellulose, the segregation factor was found to be anexponential decaying function of the particle weight. Keywords:granulation, coating, surface layering, segregation, coating uniformity, temperature protile, humidityprofile, growth kinetics, particle coating.

  • The reliability and predictive validity of the Guidelines for Stalking Assessment and Management (SAM)
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Psychological Assessment. - : American Psychological Association (APA). - 1040-3590 .- 1939-134X. ; 30:11, s. 1409-1420
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study assessed the reliability and validity of the Guidelines for Stalking Assessment and Management (SAM), a structured professional judgment measure for assessing stalking risks. The SAM was completed retrospectively from file review for 146 adult stalkers (90.4% male) referred to a community-based forensic mental health service. Interrater reliability (IRR) was initially poor, but developing a strict definition of stalking currency and rescoring the SAM led to improvement. Based on the updated scoring, IRR was moderate for judgments about whether stalking was ongoing at the time of assessment, and fair to moderate for summary risk judgments. Both case prioritization (area under the curve [AUC] = .69) and risk for continued stalking (AUC = .76) ratings discriminated between groups, with high-risk stalkers 5-9 times as likely as low-risk stalkers to reoffend by stalking their original victims. Lifetime SAM total scores (AUC = .70) also featured moderate to good discrimination. Follow-up analyses suggested that this was driven mainly by the recent presence of risk markers and the nature of any ongoing stalking situation rather than historical or individual factors. Findings support the use of the SAM to structure risk judgments made by those with experience in assessing stalking. Current results also imply that IRR might be improved by introducing (a) a fixed definition of stalking currency and (b) usage guidelines for specific contexts.
