    • The role of reactive oxygen species (ROSs) and effect of solution matrix have been investigated for the degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE). Zeolite-supported nano iron (Z-nZVI) was synthesized as an activator to catalyze sodium percarbonate (SPC) with or without hydroxylamine, i.e. as reducing agent (RA). The probe tests confirmed the generation of OH center dot and O-2(-center dot) in the Z-nZVI activated SPC system in absence of the RA, while the presence of RA significantly increased the generation of OH center dot and O-2(-center dot) radicals. Scavenger tests demonstrated that OH center dot was the main ROS responsible for TCE degradation, whereas O-2(-center dot) also participated in TCE degradation. From the solution matrix perspective, the experimental results confirmed significant scavenging effects of Cl- (1.0, 10.0, and 100 mmol L-1) and HCO3- (1.0 and 10.0 mmol L-1), whereas the scavenging effects were fairly impeded at 100 mmol L-1 concentration of HCO3-. On the other hand, a considerable decline in scavenging effect was observed in the presence of RA in tested Cl and HCO3- concentration ranges. In addition, negligible scavenging effects of NO3- and SO42- anions were found in all tested concentrations. The effect of initial solution pH on catalytic activity indicated a significant increase in the TCE degradation in the presence of RA even at higher pH value of 9. The results indicated that the Z-nZVI activated SPC system in presence of RA can effectively degrade chlorinated organic solvents, but it is important to consider the intensive existence of anions in groundwater.

  • Identification and validation of volatile organic compounds in bile for differential diagnosis of perihilar cholangiocarcinoma

    • Early and differential diagnosis of perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (PHCCA) is highly challenging. This study aimed to evaluate whether volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in bile samples could be emerging diagnostic biomarkers for PHCCA. We collected 200 bile samples from patients with PHCCA and benign biliary diseases (BBD), including a 140-patient training cohort and an 60-patient test cohort. Gas chromatography-ion mobility spec-trometry (GC-IMS) was used for VOCs detection. The predictive models were constructed using machine learning algorithms. Our analysis detected 19 VOC substances using GC-IMS in the bile samples and resulted in the identification of three new VOCs, 2-methoxyfuran, propyl isovalerate, and diethyl malonate that were found in bile. Unsupervised hierarchical clustering analysis supported that VOCs detected in the bile could distinguish PHCCA from BBD. Twelve VOCs defined according to 32 signal peaks had significant statistical significance between BBD and PHCCA, including four up-regulated VOCs in PHCCA, such as 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, propyl iso-valerate, cyclohexanone, and acetophenone, while the rest eight VOCs were down-regulated. ROC curve analysis revealed that machine learning models based on VOCs could help diagnosing PHCCA. Among them, SVM pro-vided the highest AUC of 0.966, with a sensitivity and specificity of 93.1% and 100%, respectively. The diag-nostic model based on different VOC spectra could be a feasible method for the differential diagnosis of PHCCA.

The analytical model has also been developed to estimate the system performance under different transmission scenarios.

    • Equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN) occurs due to the interplay between laser phase noise and electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) module. It degrades significantly the performance of uncompensated long-haul coherent optical fiber communication systems. In this work, a general expression accounting for EEPN is presented based on Gaussian noise model to evaluate the performance of multi-channel optical communication systems using EDC and digital nonlinearity compensation (NLC). The nonlinear interaction between the signal and the EEPN is analyzed. Numerical simulations are carried out in nonlinear Nyquist-spaced wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) coherent transmission systems. Significant performance degradation due to EEPN in the cases of EDC and NLC are observed, with and without the consideration of transceiver (TRx) noise. The validation of the analytical approach has been done via split-step Fourier simulations. The maximum transmission distance and the laser linewidth tolerance are also estimated to provide important insights into the impact of EEPN.

  • Single-Digit Nanobubble Sensing via Nanopore Technology

    • Nanobubbles play an important role in diverse fields, including engineering, medicine, and agriculture. Understanding the characteristics of individual nanobubbles is essential for comprehending fluid dynamics behaviors and advancing nanoscale science across various fields. Here, we report a strategy based on nanopore sensors for characterizing single-digit nanobubbles. We investigated the sizes and diffusion coefficients of nanobubbles at different voltages. Additionally, the finite element simulation and molecular dynamics simulation were introduced to account for counterion concentration variation around nanobubbles in the nanopore. In particular, the differences in stability and surface charge density of nanobubbles under various solution environments have been studied by the ion-stabilized model and the DLVO theory. Additionally, a straightforward method to mitigate nanobubble generation in the bulk for reducing current noise in nanopore sensing was suggested. The results hold significant implications for enhancing the understanding of individual nanobubble characterizations, especially in the nanofluid field.

    • Heparanase promotes tumorigenesis, angiogenesis, and metastasis. Here, we conducted a study based on systematic review and the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) data that examined heparanase expression in clinical samples to determine its prognostic value. According to the meta-analysis and TCGA data, we found that heparanase expression was up-regulated in most breast cancer specimens, and elevated heparanase expression was associated with increased lymph node metastasis, larger tumor size, higher histological grade, and poor survival. These results suggest that targeting heparanase might improve treatments for breast cancer patients.

    • Although significant improvements have been achieved for organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs), the top-performing devices still show power conversion efficiencies far behind those of commercialized solar cells. One of the main reasons is the large driving force required for separating electron-hole pairs. Here, we demonstrate an efficiency of 14.7% in the single-junction OPV by using a new polymer donor PTO2 and a nonfullerene acceptor IT-4F. The device possesses an efficient charge generation at a low driving force. Ultrafast transient absorption measurements probe the formation of loosely bound charge pairs with extended lifetime that impedes the recombination of charge carriers in the blend. The theoretical studies reveal that the molecular electrostatic potential (ESP) between PTO2 and IT-4F is large, and the induced intermolecular electric field may assist the charge generation. The results suggest OPVs have the potential for further improvement by judicious modulation of ESP.
