  • Precision electroweak measurements on the Z resonance
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physics Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 427:5-6, s. 257-454
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the final electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the Z resonance by the experiments operating at the electron-positron colliders SLC and LEP. The data consist of 17 million Z decays accumulated by the ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL experiments at LEP, and 600 thousand Z decays by the SLID experiment using a polarised beam at SLC. The measurements include cross-sections, forward-backward asymmetries and polarised asymmetries. The mass and width of the Z boson, m(Z) and Gamma(Z), and its couplings to fermions, for example the p parameter and the effective electroweak mixing angle for leptons, are precisely measured: m(Z) = 91.1875 +/- 0.0021 GeV, Gamma(Z) = 2.4952 +/- 0.0023 GeV, rho(l) = 1.0050 +/- 0.0010, sin(2)theta(eff)(lept) = 0.23153 +/- 0.00016. The number of light neutrino species is determined to be 2.9840 +/- 0.0082, in agreement with the three observed generations of fundamental fermions. The results are compared to the predictions of the Standard Model (SM). At the Z-pole, electroweak radiative corrections beyond the running of the QED and QCD coupling constants are observed with a significance of five standard deviations, and in agreement with the Standard Model. Of the many Z-pole measurements, the forward-backward asymmetry in b-quark production shows the largest difference with respect to its SM expectation, at the level of 2.8 standard deviations. Through radiative corrections evaluated in the framework of the Standard Model, the Z-pole data are also used to predict the mass of the top quark, m(t) = 173(+10)(+13) GeV, and the mass of the W boson, m(W) = 80.363 +/- 0.032 GeV. These indirect constraints are compared to the direct measurements, providing a stringent test of the SM. Using in addition the direct measurements of m(t) and m(W), the mass of the as yet unobserved SM Higgs boson is predicted with a relative uncertainty of about 50% and found to be less than 285 GeV at 95% confidence level. • Hepatic stellate cells express synemin, a protein bridging intermediate filaments to focal adhesions.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Gut. - : BMJ. - 0017-5749. ; 55:9, s. 1276-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In the liver, stellate cells play several important (patho)physiological roles. They express a broad but variable spectrum of intermediate filament (IF) proteins. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression and functions of the intermediate filament protein synemin in hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). METHODS: In isolated and cultured rat HSCs, synemin expression was examined by quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, western blotting, and immunocytochemistry. Protein-protein interaction between synemin and possible binding partners was investigated by co-immunoprecipitation and confocal microscopy. RESULTS: Expression of synemin was significantly downregulated with increased culture time. In 1-day cultured HSCs, synemin associated with other IF proteins (GFAP, desmin, and vimentin), and with the focal adhesion proteins vinculin and talin, but not with alpha-actinin or paxillin. Synemin IF and focal adhesion proteins co-localised in long slender processes, but not in the lamellipodia. In human and rat liver tissue, the presence of synemin was investigated by immunohistochemistry. In normal rat and human livers, synemin immunoreactivity was found in HSCs, smooth muscle cells of hepatic arterioles, and nerve bundles in portal tracts, but not in portal fibroblasts. In CCl4-intoxicated rat livers and in human cirrhotic livers, immunoreactivity for synemin in the parenchymal tissue was decreased. Thus synemin was expressed in quiescent HSCs but not in portal fibroblasts; and synemin expression decreased with HSC activation in vivo during chronic liver damage and with HSC activation in culture. CONCLUSIONS: Synemin forms heteropolymeric filaments with type-III IF proteins and acts as a bridging protein between IFs and a specific type of focal adhesions.

  • Remarkable variability in morphology, hygroscopicity and optical properties of soot aerosols during internal mixing in the atmosphere.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 1091-6490 .- 0027-8424. ; 105, s. 10291-10296
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The atmospheric effects of soot aerosols include interference with radiative transfer, visibility impairment, and alteration of cloud formation and are highly sensitive to the manner by which soot is internally mixed with other aerosol constituents. We present experimental studies to show that soot particles acquire a large mass fraction of sulfuric acid during atmospheric aging, considerably altering their properties. Soot particles exposed to subsaturated sulfuric acid vapor exhibit a marked change in morphology, characterized by a decreased mobility-based diameter but an increased fractal dimension and effective density. These particles experience large hygroscopic size and mass growth at subsaturated conditions (<90% relative humidity) and act efficiently as cloud-condensation nuclei. Coating with sulfuric acid and subsequent hygroscopic growth enhance the optical properties of soot aerosols, increasing scattering by ≈10-fold and absorption by nearly 2-fold at 80% relative humidity relative to fresh particles. In addition, condensation of sulfuric acid is shown to occur at a similar rate on ambient aerosols of various types of a given mobility size, regardless of their chemical compositions and microphysical structures. Representing an important mechanism of atmospheric aging, internal mixing of soot with sulfuric acid has profound implications on visibility, human health, and direct and indirect climate forcing.

  • Broad-angle polarization beam splitter using an ultra-low permittivity material
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 2008 Asia Optical Fiber Communication and Optoelectronic Exposition and Conference, AOE 2008. - 9781557528636
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We design a broad-angle polarization beam splitter consisting of alternating layers of dielectric and ultra-low permittivity material. Within wide range of incident angles, it shows high transmissivity for one polarization while high reflectivity for another.

  • Polarization-independent 2D omni-directional photonic band gaps in a 1D periodic metal-dielectric (anisotropic) structure
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Waves in Random and Complex Media. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1745-5030 .- 1745-5049. ; 19:1, s. 39-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is shown that there is no polarization-independent two-dimensionally (2D) omni-directional photonic band gap (PBG) for any conventional one-dimensional (1D) metal-dielectric (isotropic) structure. Through the study of band diagrams and some asymptotic analysis, a 1D periodic metal-dielectric (anisotropic) structure is proposed to achieve a polarization-independent 2D omni-directional PBG. Theoretical predictions for both the lossless and lossy cases are verified with finite element method (FEM) simulation of a point source in such a structure.
